Lu Siera, at the age of 19, took her career to Europe to model and join model agencies in Paris, Italy, Germany and Japan. Lu is presently a part of Elite Model Management in New York.  Pierre Balmain was the first French designer to hire Sierra. Other designers such as Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent and Patrick Kelly began to request Sierra. Soon after, she began to work for Krizia, Fendi, Karl Lagerfield, Giorgia Armani and became known as the "Bob Mackie Model." Soon Bill Blass, Escada, Randolph Duke and Oscar de laRenta used her on the runway.  In 2008, Donald Trump hired Lu Sierra to choreograph the runway portion of the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants. As a teen and young adult we are surrounded by people telling us what to do, setting boundaries, creating standards and delivering prompts we respond to. Our teachers lead us in school, our parents lead us at home, there's an RA with rules for the dorms, Coach who sets up the drills for practice and the Pageant Director that tells us where to be and when all week. One of the common misconceptions of winning a pageant is the idea that when you win a pageant, you'll be swept away into some fairytale land where you get a business manager, PR specialist and full glam team. The reason people believe this is because this is what happens in some pageants - namely Miss USA or Miss America. But, for most pageant winners, this is not the case. One of the greatest skills that pageant women learn is to convey memorized material in a way that feels new every time. It's a secret of actors, speakers, and media professionals. And it's a vital skill to win a pageant. Usually, when a woman attempts to memorize a speech, it generally loses emotional qualities that make it feel real, relatable, and engaging. One of my greatest pet-peeves, and that of every judge and pageant director and audience member... is a boring, monotone on stage introduction or answer to an on-stage question. It's painful to listen to, makes you pity the poor girl, and gets hideously low scores. I've heard so many well-written introductions that get wasted away with no emotion. In this episode, I'll teach you how to differentiate your platform from all other contestants by creating a unique stance of what you believe. If you go through the steps I outline in this episode, not only will you be able to write an essay that is totally unique and descriptive, but you'll also be able to explain how it's different from others to the media, your judges, and sponsors. It's fun to imagine how you can make an impact on the world by standing for what you believe. Procrastination is defined as the avoidance of doing a task, which needs to be done, usually by doing more pleasurable or less urgent tasks thus putting off important tasks to a later time. Procrastination is caused by several things including pure laziness or low self-esteem, overwhelm, lack of clear direction, or an undefined vision of the end result. Most people (90%) are average in life and in pageants. In today’s episode I want to share with you a key to success. It’s simple, but it is not easy. It’s called Action. Taking action is the number one thing that separates the good from the excellent – all the people with amazing ideas from those with amazing results. Taking actions means using the knowledge that you’re gaining from teachers, coaches, books, life wisdom…even this podcast…and allowing it to flow through your strengths and your skills and take action to help others. People who don’t take action, aren’t releasing their knowledge into the world. Imagine a running creek of water that is constantly refreshed, taking in new information and sharing it on down the road. If nothing is flowing through you, you’re either a swampland or a flood. If you aren’t gaining anything new to pass along, you’re swampy. If you are only gaining new information and not taking action to let it flow through your, you’re flooding. Before my client commits to a pageant, I always recommend that she talk with former titleholders to best understand her experience from her perspective. With multiple perspectives, you get a stronger view of whether or not this pageant would be a good fit for you. I did this the first time I competed in a state pageant and I learned a TON – nothing that scared me away from the pageant, but every piece of insight and advice set me up for success in my competition. Your farewell speech is sort of your final impression. Many pageants invite the contestants to prepare a brief opening statement or a closing statement that is presented during your interview, as an on-stage introduction, or in your on-stage question portion. This is an incredibly important part of your competition and you have to know how to prepare for it so you can start and end strong. Orientation is a sea of judgment. It’s exciting and equally nerve-wracking. All the would-be titleholders showing up with their best foot forward to prove themselves as the winner. In this episode, we’re talking about the word “Grace” which is frequently used to describe pageant women as they glide across the stage or move like a ballet dancer. “She’s so graceful.” Socially, when someone ‘gives someone grace’ they essentially are looking past their flaws. Grace is giving someone something wonderful that they do not deserve. What does this have to do with pageantry? A TON! If you can cultivate grace and learn to express it on stage and in your interview, you’ll be seen as love, truth, and hope. You’ve heard this a million times, “She’s got it!” “There’s just something about her…” “Wow – She’s just wow.” It’s the ‘It Factor’; the attractive quality that someone exudes which makes you want to be near them, befriend them, or perhaps choose them for the title or a promotion. You know it when you see it. So…what is ‘it’?!  It’s Charisma! Charisma is a unique combination of characteristics, which allow an individual to standout in a crowd, appeal to an audience, and grab the attention of judges and others. It’s no secret that charisma has the power to persuade. If you’ve ever seen a James Bond movie, you know what I’m talking about. Charisma is something that anyone can exude at all times. Meaning, it has nothing to do with looks, education, skills, etc. It is really more of an attitude. In your pageant interview, the judges are expecting you to be prepared to communicate your best self during your interview. That means, whether it’s 2 minutes or 20 minutes, the responsibility is on you. Therefore, you have to be in control of the values you want to communicate, the stories you want to share, and how you will make an impact as the new titleholder.  I’ll teach you the top three things you should communicate during your interview. Just because you enter a pageant, doesn’t mean you have to want to win…yes, seriously. Pageant contestants sometimes get caught up in the need to win without truly considering what they really want. Here, I’ll teach you a 4-step exercise to help you determine your ultimate goal. You’ll be surprised to see some of the reasons that woman compete to not win their pageant. Teresa Scanlan, former Miss America 2011, is a good example of someone who won her first local, state, and national title and may have missed out on a longer pageant career if that was her goal. We can’t say for sure what her ultimate goal was, though I don’t know too many people who would bulk at a national title opportunity like that! This exercise is also helpful for every pageant you enter because it can bring up some hidden fears that you may have that you aren’t even aware of. These fears and insecurities can keep you from winning the title – unless you surface them now.      © Alycia Darby
