The minor flaw that ruins relationships: How to protect your most treasured connections
Have you ever heard the three rules of criticism?
Don’t do it
Don’t do it
Don’t do it
Ok, everyone knows how it feels to be criticized. Everyone agrees that it’s damaging to our most precious relationships. Some people have lived under the shadow of criticism their whole life, and have the arduous task of trying to rebuild their self-esteem and confidence. So if it’s so incredibly obvious as to why we shouldn’t do it- why do we? In this week’s Shmuz Live, I’ll be deconstructing the science behind the scorn, and give some real-life, practical advice on how to overcome this destructive habit.

It's Time to Get Holy
Is the path to spirituality sitting cross-legged on a windy mountaintop, miserably chewing on stale bread and gagging on sips of murky water?
Nope. Not by us.
Hashem has blessed us with a world full of delicious gashmius, and it’s there for your enjoyment.
Mmm.
But there’s one crucial caveat that can’t be ignored. You need to know how to use pleasure without turning it into a gigantic, yellow-fanged monster that will dominate your thoughts and actions every waking moment of your life.
And if that sounds scary, that’s because it is.
In this Shmuz, you will learn how to get the monster in your mind under control. You’ll discover how to use the pleasures of this world to draw closer to Hashem. And you’ll finally understand how to deal with your wealthy brother-in-law’s geshmake kiddushim, without losing sight of who you are.
Sounds good? Listen now.

Session One: The Descent into Slavery
We know that contemplating the events of Yetzias Mitzrayim is central to our avodas Hashem. Recognizing that this house has a Master, and internalizing our knowledge that Hashem exists, is the very purpose of our life in this world. It is therefore our holy obligation to learn as much as we can about Pesach and gain a detailed understanding of the events that transpired.
In the first session of Living Through the Makos, Rabbi Shafier explains how Klal Yisroel went from being a privileged nation in Egypt to tortured slaves. He discusses the rise of anti-Semitism amongst the Mitzri, and how their hatred of others ultimately led to their hatred of themselves. Packed with valuable life-lessons, this series is guaranteed to give you the ultimate in Pesach preparation and elevate your Sedarim like never before.

Shmuz On The Parsha - Tazria
Shiurim on shmiras haloshon aren’t popular. Like exercise or keeping healthy, most think 'yep. I know this. Shouldn’t do it. Not sure I need to listen to a whole shiur about it...' Unfortunately, the parameters of lashon hara are not what you think. Just like eating treif or being mechalel Shabbos, it is one hundred percent forbidden. And it’s easy to see why- we all have stuff in our history that we wouldn’t want ‘out there’.
But there’s more: it’s relatively easy to stop talking lashon hara. You see, lashon hara is mostly due to a lack of awareness. And so by becoming more attentive to what the Torah demands of you, you can start amassing a serious amount of s’char for yourself. Ready to start building a beautiful olam haba? Watch now.

The Shmuz on the Parsha: Shemos
Emunah and Bitachon: Do You Understand the Difference?
Do you believe in Hashem, but sometimes feel that He’s out to get you? Then you have emunah, but lack bitachon. You see, it’s not enough to simply recognize that Hashem runs the world. As frum Jews, we are also meant to internalize that Hashem is directly involved in our own lives and knows what is best for us.
Too many of our problems in bitachon stem from the fact that we think we know better than G-d. Too often we assume we know the bigger picture, and feel abandoned by our Creator. In this Shmuz, Rabbi Shafier shares some practical ideas on how to make Hashem real. Pick a method that speaks to you, and transform your life into one of genuine trust and menuchas hanefesh.

The Shmuz on the Parsha: Vayigash
In this week’s parsha we learn of Yosef’s impeccable honesty, going above his obligation as viceroy and personally overseeing each and every sale during the years of famine. Although his behavior went above and beyond, as Torah Jews we can certainly use Yosef’s yashrus as an inspiration for our own business dealings. In this shmuz, Rabbi Shafier discusses some common pitfalls that can occur when in the workplace or handling money, and has a sobering message for those that think they could never be guilty of gezel.

The Shmuz on the Parsha: Vayishlach
Yaakov walked with Hashem. He achieved an enviable closeness with Ha Kodesh Baruch Hu, understanding that He is present and involved in every aspect of creation. How can we integrate this truth into our own lives? How can we speak to Hashem and really feel that He’s listening, that He’s real and right here with us? In this hands-on shmuz, Rabbi Shafier presents us with an irresistible idea on how we can reach incredible heights in our own avodas Hashem. He also gives us three actionable suggestions on how to improve the quality of our davening and provides plenty of chizuk to get us started.

The Shmuz on the Parsha- Vayeitzei
We learn in this week’s parsha that Yaakov Avinu was saved from Lavan’s murderous intentions in the merit of his hard work. Not because of his unfathomable yiras shamayim, not because of his avodas Hashem, not because he was the son of Yitzchak and the grandson of Avraham. Hard work. Something we can all relate to. Something that occupies many, many hours of our time throughout our lives. Why does Hashem see work as such a zechus? Why weren’t we created with our needs easily met, allowing us to focus purely on mitzvos and limud haTorah? In the Merit of Work unravels how the everyday challenges of the workplace are no accident. Those late paychecks, irritating colleagues and daily grind are all designed to test us, strengthen us and move us forward in our ruchnius. This week, discover how your workplace can become the perfect place for spiritual prosperity and growth. Your nine to five will never be the same again.

The Shmuz on the Parsha: Toldos
If you don’t appreciate it, you may as well not have it. Isn’t that a disturbing thought? Of course, appreciation is at the core of kibud av v’eim, a mitzvah that Eisav HaRasha excelled in. Think about it. By the age of fifteen, Eisav had already killed a man, lived with a married woman, denied the Torah and renounced mitzvos, techias hameisim and olam haba. Devoid of morality, it seems puzzling that he was so careful to honor his father Yitzchak.
In this week’s Shmuz on the Parsha, Rabbi Shafier takes a deeper look as to why kibud av was so instinctual to even a lowlife like Eisav. Ready to gain a golden ticket to happiness and meaning? Listen now

The Shmuz on the Parsha: Chayei Sora
In this week’s Shmuz on the Parsha, Rabbi Shafier delves into the ultimate tafkid of Sara Imeinu. In spite of her incredible accomplishments, we learn that Sara Imeinu’s role was primarily to become the mother of Am Yisroel through Yitzchak Avinu. Let that sink in. It wasn’t until she was ninety years old that she started fulfilling her purpose in this world.
For our own lives, this delivers some powerful lessons- the futility of comparing ourselves with others, the fallacy of judging those around us and the freedom to accept the stage of life that Hashem has placed us in. Seize this opportunity to learn something about the Parsha this week- it contains powerful life lessons that we all need reminding of.

Akeidas Yitzchak.
An event that continues to shape the Jewish People, giving us endless zechuyos and molding our collective character for all time. He got up early in the morning to kill his child.
The answers to these questions give us the direction we need in our own challenges. In The Shmuz on the Parsha, Rabbi Shafier offer a practical, three point survival guide that you can use to step up to any difficulty. Why We Want Moshiach
Our life right now is not normal. A long time ago we forgot what life is supposed to be like. We forgot about what living a life of clarity means. Imagine, for a moment, a world without confusion, without doubt. We may not feel this acutely, but Hashem does. He feels our pain and is longing for our return. If you feel that the sorrow of Tisha B’Av is difficult to relate to, take the time now to ponder what we’re living without and just how broken our world is. This Shmuz will bring home the relevance of this moment of reflection and mourning, and show us in practical application what we can do to bring Hashem into our lives once more.

The world that we live in isn’t the way it’s supposed to be. Tisha B’Av gives us that moment of reflection, the opportunity to consider what we are missing and how we can begin to rectify what has been lost. Like children born into darkness, we can’t even comprehend what life should look like, how we are meant to enjoy this world and use it as a tool to become closer to Hashem. This Tisha B’Av take the time to reset your perspective. Realize what we are missing, and mourn.

Naso: I Never Do Anything Wrong
How fragile is your ego?
Do you know someone who will never admit to being wrong? They will stubbornly refuse to acknowledge the facts and stick to their story as if their very lives depend on it. Unfortunately, this quirk is not just limited to hardened criminals and pathological narcissists. Within all of us is the overwhelming desire to protect our ego and soothe our sense of self.
It’s very unpleasant to admit you could be wrong. Unpleasant and humbling. Ultimately, your very purpose on this planet is to work on your middos and become the very best version of yourself. And that version includes being truthful. It includes courageously learning humility. And it includes developing the psychological fortitude to be ok with being wrong. Ready to face up to who you really are? Listen now.

In the third* class of the series, Rabbi Shafier empowers us to recognize our inherent closeness to the Ribbono Shel Olam. When we fully internalize that whatever we experience, Hashem experiences as well, we gain a glimpse into His love for us and His belief in us. Those that stood at Har Sinai saw with complete clarity their unlimited ability to achieve, to grow, to accomplish. We have the same power within us. By tapping into the messages of Shavuos, we too can learn how to unleash our potential and can continue the year with a renewed sense of energy and purpose. *Go to TheShmuz.com for the second class

Parshas Tazria- Mindless Chatter
Shiurim on shmiras haloshon aren’t popular. Like exercise or keeping healthy, most think ‘yep. I know this. Shouldn’t do it. Not sure I need to listen to a whole shiur about it...’ Unfortunately, the parameters of lashon hara are not what you think. Just like eating treif or being mechalel Shabbos, it is one hundred percent forbidden. And it’s easy to see why-we all have stuff in our history that we wouldn’t want ‘out there’. It makes sense that talking about even true events could cause serious damage to another Jew.
But there’s more: it’s actually relatively easy to stop talking lashon hara. You see, lashon hara isn’t driven by passion, by desire. It’s mostly due to a lack of awareness. By becoming more attentive of what the Torah demands of us, we can start amassing a serious amount of se’char for ourselves. All it takes is for us to become more mindful and aware of what we’re saying.

Shmuz on the Parsha: Vayikra
The word ‘vayikra’ is written in a sefer Torah with a small aleph. Our mesorah tells us that Moshe Rabbeinu was uncomfortable with the Torah recording that Hashem called out to him, and begged Hashem to alter the wording of the posuk. When Hashem refused, Moshe Rabbeinu wrote ‘vayikra’ with a small aleph instead. The Baal HaTurim comments that this is a sign of Moshe’s incredible level of humility, yet it begs the obvious question: a humble man listens to his Creator and obeys His commands. Against this backdrop, Rabbi Shafier guides us through the often misunderstood middah of anavah, and discusses what it means for our own sense of self and emotional wellbeing. We are all gifted with incredible talents and abilities-how can we utilize our inherent potential whilst still remaining grounded in humility and gratitude?*This is the link to watch*:https://bit.ly/3pMjcnO

In this week’s parsha, we come to the making of the kiyor, fashioned from the mirrors of the Jewish women. Moshe Rabbeinu was initially reluctant to accept this offering, wary that something that was used for female beautification would be inappropriate in the Mishkan. Hashem replies that these mirrors are actually the most beloved. Why did Moshe think Hashem wouldn’t want the mirrors? What does this week’s parsha teach us about the role of female beauty? In today’s society, you are relentlessly bombarded with two fallacies: One, that money equals happiness and two, that your sense of self should be defined by your net worth. In this uncomfortably relevant Shmuz, Rabbi Shafier encourages you to take a long hard look at how you judge yourself and others- are your attitudes towards money in line with Torah hashkafa? Or are you constantly pursuing the next best thing, hoping that it will give you the elusive satisfaction for which we all crave?

Megillas Esther Session Three: Esther’s Big Deal Request
Esther stands at the threshold of the throne room, prepared to forfeit her life in this world and the next. Instead, she is assisted by three melachim, achieves ruach hakodesh and is the catalyst for Klal Yisroel’s eventual salvation. Aside from the obvious message that Hashem can always flip things around in an instant, there are many other life lessons to be learnt. Firstly, Esther’s people skills are exemplary. Want to ask for a raise? Just follow Esther’s three point plan on how to submit a request. Need chizuk in following daas Torah? Use Esther as an example. And if we want a clear warning on how not to behave we need look no further than Haman. His relentless drive for kavod shows us how if a person doesn’t control his middos, he’s destined to be utterly miserable in this world. It’s all here. Genuine, Torah-true hashkafa and timeless messages laid open for you this Purim.

The Shmuz on the Parsha: Parshas Terumah- How Much Histadlus Should I Do?
This week's parsha is about the creation of the menorah. The menorah was destined to be made through miracles. So why did Hashem give Moshe instructions on how to make it? What was the purpose of Moshe's effort?
Knowing the balance between bitachon and hishtadlus is something we all struggle with. Health, shidduchim, parnassah...how much effort should I do? What if too much histadlus is driving me crazy? Wouldn't a real baal bitachon leave it all to Hashem?
In this clarifying shiur, Rabbi Shafier exposes some crucial misconceptions. If you're wondering how to balance your life according to the Torah, this Shmuz is for you. You'll learn how to set goals, make money and pay those bills- without losing sight of the ratzon Hashem.

He refused to delay a national taanis, and instead called for Klal Yisroel to fast from the first day of Pesach, forgoing the zechus and mitzvas aseh of achilas matzah. What was Mordechai’s cheshbon? And what does his reasoning teach us for our own lives? In the second class on Megillas Esther, learn why Mordechai’s rebuke is so on point. Grasp the posukim like never before, gain a heightened awareness of the Megillah and prepare to go into Purim with an elevated sense of joy and gratitude.

The Shmuz on the Parsha: Yisro: Cognitive Restructuring
Live your truth. Love is love. You do you. You’re worth it. Just do it.
These are some of the phrases common in today’s culture. The problem is, they are completely at odds with Torah hashkafa.
Lo sachmod beis rayecha.
Lo sachmod aishes rayecha.
Do not desire your friend’s house. Do not desire your friend’s wife. In fact, don’t desire anything that belongs to him. So says the aseres hadibros in this week’s parsha. But why not? Society cries. ‘How can I deny my feelings? Why should I oppress my love for this person? Why shouldn’t I have the house I want, the car I want? Afterall, I can split the payments, put it on the credit card…’This week's Shmuz on the Parsha invites you to embrace a complete paradigm shift. The Torah tells us we can and must control our thinking, our emotions and our actions. We are held accountable to a high standard. How can we train our brain to become more elevated, more holy and simply nicer people? Catch this week’s shmuz and prepare to become a better version… of yourself.

Feeling Judged
So many issues are decided on Rosh Hashanah: who will live; who will die; who will be healthy; who will be sick; who will be successful; who won’t. . .
Since we accept and understand this, one would assume that we would be deeply moved by the davening on Rosh Hashanah. Logically, we should spend the day in reverence and awe. Yet that seems to be very far from what actually happens. Why is it so difficult for us to feel the reality of being judged, and what can we do about it?
This Shmuz deals with understanding some of the basic issues that are decided on Rosh Hashanah, and gives us practical advice on how to use it to the utmost.

How to Prepare for Rosh Hashanah
“Dip the apple in the honey, have a good sweet new year.”
We teach our children that touching song, and that is what we all wish for: a good sweet year with bracha and hatzlacha in all that we do.
But that often isn’t the case. If we look back on previous years we see many things that were sweet, but also things that weren’t. Some parts of our lives are downright bitter and we wish they’d never occurred. This Shmuz is a highly focused, mature look at the issues decided on the Day of Judgment and tells us what we can do to change the decree.

If Hashem Loves Me, Why Am I So Broke?
I say every morning ‘sheasah li kol tzarci’- Hashem, You have provided me with all of my needs. Three times a day I remind myself that You open Your hand and satisfy every living thing with its desire. In this week’s Shmuz on the Parsha, take a closer look at this apparent contradiction. Listen now and learn how to:

Start really enjoying the good things in life
Handle every nisayon like a baal bitachon and get more resilient to life’s challenges .

Shmuz #273 Don't Trust Your Brain
We tend to think that our brain is our best friend- we rely on our thoughts to tell us right from wrong, good from bad and truth from lies. So what happened with Korach? Tisha B'Av What Are You Waiting For?
8/7/2022 • 1 hour, 36 seconds
Tisha B'Av: 2000 Years Later, Where Are We?
For almost 2,000 years, the Jewish people have been driven from land to land across the globe. Exiled from our home with the destruction of the Bais Hamikdash, we have been forced from continent to continent and country to country – tortured, oppressed, and banished. For a short while, we find haven in one country, only to be kicked out again and chased to the next place in a never-ending series of tragedies. This reality brings many questions:
Why is the Jewish people so oppressed? Why is it that the other nations stand up to destroy us in every generation? Why is it that the one universal law of history is that everyone hates the Jew?
But, there are even bigger questions to be asked, and those are about ourselves:What have we learned from this long and bitter exile?Have we become wiser?Have we become better?Do we understand the message of galus?
This Shmuz puts two millennia of Jewish history into perspective and deals with the major questions of our belief system.

Tisha B'Av: What We Lost
On Tisha B’Av, we are expected to mourn many things: the devastation that happened to our people long ago; the almost two thousand years of expulsions, bloodshed, and torture that we have suffered through since then; and finally, the influence on our mindset and lifestyle picked up by living in exile all of these years.
While it takes work to actually feel the pain, the issues aren’t that distant, and most of us can relate to them.
There is, however, another aspect of the tragedy that is more difficult to relate to: the loss of the Bais Hamikdash itself and our inability to do the avodah (temple service).
The problem is that performing the avodah is something that we have never experienced. How can we recognize what it is? How can we realize what we are lacking? And how can we possibly mourn its loss?
This Shmuz brings us closer to relating to what the Bais Hamikdash was and what it was like to experience being inside it.

Our understanding of Hashem is often based on a limited interpretation of human nature. Can Hashem get angry with me? Is He punitive, lacking rachmonos? Session 5: Arrogance and Anger
We are all familiar with the characteristics of the arrogant man. He’s argumentative, obnoxious, judgemental and small minded. In this class, Rabbi Shafier explains another hallmark of someone who is haughty- their deep unhappiness and dissatisfaction with life. You see, a baal gaiveh constantly has sunburn on his ego- he is forever seeing himself as slighted, dishonored disrespected.
In contrast, a humble man is free to enjoy this world. He can appreciate simple pleasures, get along with people and maintain happy, fulfilling relationships. Ok, so you know which one you want to be. How do you get there?
Whilst removing arrogance from our hearts may be a lifetime job, in this essential shiur, Rabbi Shafier explains where to start. Listen now to get the motivation to attain genuine humility and live a life of meaning and satisfaction.
