The Shmuz on the Parsha: Vayishlach
Yaakov walked with Hashem. He achieved an enviable closeness with Ha Kodesh Baruch Hu, understanding that He is present and involved in every aspect of creation. How can we integrate this truth into our own lives? How can we speak to Hashem and really feel that He’s listening, that He’s real and right here with us? In this hands-on shmuz, Rabbi Shafier presents us with an irresistible idea on how we can reach incredible heights in our own avodas Hashem. He also gives us three actionable suggestions on how to improve the quality of our davening and provides plenty of chizuk to get us started.

The Shmuz on the Parsha- Vayeitzei
We learn in this week’s parsha that Yaakov Avinu was saved from Lavan’s murderous intentions in the merit of his hard work. Not because of his unfathomable yiras shamayim, not because of his avodas Hashem, not because he was the son of Yitzchak and the grandson of Avraham. Hard work. Something we can all relate to. Something that occupies many, many hours of our time throughout our lives. Why does Hashem see work as such a zechus? Why weren’t we created with our needs easily met, allowing us to focus purely on mitzvos and limud haTorah? In the Merit of Work unravels how the everyday challenges of the workplace are no accident. Those late paychecks, irritating colleagues and da

The Shmuz on the Parsha: Toldos
If you don’t appreciate it, you may as well not have it. Isn’t that a disturbing thought? Of course, appreciation is at the core of kibud av v’eim, a mitzvah that Eisav HaRasha excelled in. Think about it. By the age of fifteen, Eisav had already killed a man, lived with a married woman, denied the Torah and renounced mitzvos, techias hameisim and olam haba. Devoid of morality, it seems puzzling that he was so careful to honor his father Yitzchak.
In this week’s Shmuz on the Parsha, Rabbi Shafier takes a deeper look as to why kibud av was so instinctual to even a lowlife like Eisav. Ready to gain a golden ticket to happiness and meaning? Listen now

The Shmuz on the Parsha: Chayei Sora
In this week’s Shmuz on the Parsha, Rabbi Shafier delves into the ultimate tafkid of Sara Imeinu. In spite of her incredible accomplishments, we learn that Sara Imeinu’s role was primarily to become the mother of Am Yisroel through Yitzchak Avinu. Let that sink in. It wasn’t until she was ninety years old that she started fulfilling her purpose in this world.
For our own lives, this delivers some powerful lessons- the futility of comparing ourselves with others, the fallacy of judging those around us and the freedom to accept the stage of life that Hashem has placed us in. Seize this opportunity to learn something about the Parsha this week- it contains powerful life lessons

Why We Want Moshiach
Our life right now is not normal. A long time ago we forgot what life is supposed to be like. We forgot about what living a life of clarity means. Imagine, for a moment, a world without confusion, without doubt. We may not feel this acutely, but Hashem does. He feels our pain and is longing for our return. If you feel that the sorrow of Tisha B’Av is difficult to relate to, take the time now to ponder what we’re living without and just how broken our world is. This Shmuz will bring home the relevance of this moment of reflection and mourning, and show us in practical application what we can do to bring Hashem into our lives once more.

The world that we live in isn’t the way it’s supposed to be. Tisha B’Av gives us that moment of reflection, the opportunity to consider what we are missing and how we can begin to rectify what has been lost. Like children born into darkness, we can’t even comprehend what life should look like, how we are meant to enjoy this world and use it as a tool to become closer to Hashem. This Tisha B’Av take the time to reset your perspective. Realize what we are missing, and mourn.

When we fully internalize that whatever we experience, Hashem experiences as well, we gain a glimpse into His love for us and His belief in us. Those that stood at Har Sinai saw with complete clarity their unlimited ability to achieve, to grow, to accomplish. We have the same power within us. By tapping into the messages of Shav

Shiurim on shmiras haloshon aren’t popular. Like exercise or keeping healthy, most think ‘yep. I know this. Shouldn’t do it. Not sure I need to listen to a whole shiur about it...’ Unfortunately, the parameters of lashon hara are not what you think. Just like eating treif or being mechalel Shabbos, it is one hundred percent forbidden. And it’s easy to see why-we all have stuff in our history that we wouldn’t want ‘out there’. It makes sense that talking about even true events could cause serious damage to another Jew.
But there’s more: it’s actually relatively easy to stop talking lashon hara. You see, lashon hara isn’t driven by passion, by desire. It’s mostly due to a lack of awareness. By becomin

Shmuz on the Parsha: Vayikra
The word ‘vayikra’ is written in a sefer Torah with a small aleph. Our mesorah tells us that Moshe Rabbeinu was uncomfortable with the Torah recording that Hashem called out to him, and begged Hashem to alter the wording of the posuk. When Hashem refused, Moshe Rabbeinu wrote ‘vayikra’ with a small aleph instead. The Baal HaTurim comments that this is a sign of Moshe’s incredible level of humility, yet it begs the obvious question: a humble man listens to his Creator and obeys His commands. Against this backdrop, Rabbi Shafier guides us through the often misunderstood middah of anavah, and discusses what it means for our own sense of self and emotional wellbeing. We are all gifted with incredible talents and abilities-how can we utilize our inherent potential whilst still remaining grounded in humility and gratitude?<span style='color: rgb

Parshas Vayakhel: Men are from Mars
In this week’s parsha, we come to the making of the kiyor, fashioned from the mirrors of the Jewish women. Moshe Rabbeinu was initially reluctant to accept this offering, wary that something that was used for female beautification would be inappropriate in the Mishkan. Hashem replies that these mirrors are actually the most beloved. Why did Moshe think Hashem wouldn’t want the mirrors? What does this week’s parsha teach us about the role of female beauty? Listen now to discover the role of attraction in marriage, some fundamental differences between men and women and how to achieve pure love with your spouse.

In today’s society, you are relentlessly bombarded with two fallacies: One, that money equals happiness and two, that your sense of self should be defined by your net worth. The Torah rejects both of these ideas. Yet we see from this week’s parsha that attraction to money is something inherent in the briah. In this uncomfortably relevant Shmuz, Rabbi Shafier encourages you to take a long hard look at how you judge yourself and others- are your attitudes towards money in line with Torah hashkafa? Or are you constantly pursuing the next best thing, hoping that it will give you the elusive satisfaction for which we all crave?

Megillas Esther Session Three: Esther’s Big Deal Request
Esther stands at the threshold of the throne room, prepared to forfeit her life in this world and the next. Instead, she is assisted by three melachim, achieves ruach hakodesh and is the catalyst for Klal Yisroel’s eventual salvation. Aside from the obvious message that Hashem can always flip things around in an instant, there are many other life lessons to be learnt. Firstly, Esther’s people skills are exemplary. Want to ask for a raise? Just follow Esther’s three point plan on how to submit a request. Need chizuk in following daas Torah? Use Esther as an example. And if we want a clear warning on how not to behave we need look no further than Haman. His relentless drive for kavod shows us how if a person doesn’t control his middos, he’s destined to be utterly miserable in this world. It’s all here. Genuine, Torah-true hashkafa and timeless messages laid open

In this shmuz, Rabbi Shafier discusses some common pitfalls that can occur when in the workplace or handling money, and has a sobering message for those that think they could never be guilty of gezel.

We witness his rise from the depths of depravity to the heights of spirituality in the course of a few hours. Through the story of his life, we see what a man accomplished in but a day – and we are brought to a new appreciation of the great potential of human beings.

If Hashem Loves Me, Why Am I So Broke?
I say every morning ‘sheasah li kol tzarci’- Hashem, You have provided me with all of my needs. Three times a day I remind myself that You open Your hand and satisfy every living thing with its desire. I know You want me to be happy, to enjoy Your world, to keep mitzvos and do Your will...so if that’s the case, WHY AM I SO BROKE?

Shmuz #273 Don't Trust Your Brain
We tend to think that our brain is our best friend- we rely on our thoughts to tell us right from wrong, good from bad and truth from lies. So what happened with Korach? How could he be driven to stage such a catastrophic rebellion? The answer is that your brain is a handmaiden to your ego. It’s not always your friend. Listen to this Shmuz to protect yourself against making crazy decisions and gain a deeper insight into who you are.

Tisha B'Av: 2000 Years Later, Where Are We?
For almost 2,000 years, the Jewish people have been driven from land to land across the globe. Exiled from our home with the destruction of the Bais Hamikdash, we have been forced from continent to continent and country to country – tortured, oppressed, and banished. For a short while, we find haven in one country, only to be kicked out again and chased to the next place in a never-ending series of tragedies. This reality brings many questions:
Why is the Jewish people so oppressed?W

Tisha B'Av: What We Lost
On Tisha B’Av, we are expected to mourn many things: the devastation that happened to our people long ago; the almost two thousand years of expulsions, bloodshed, and torture that we have suffered through since then; and finally, the influence on our mindset and lifestyle picked up by living in exile all of these years.
While it takes work to actually feel the pain, the issues aren’t that distant, and most of us can relate to them.
There is, however, another aspect of the tragedy that is more difficult to relate to: the loss of the Bais Hamikdash itself and our inability t

Our understanding of Hashem is often based on a limited interpretation of human nature. Can Hashem get angry with me? Is He punitive, lacking rachmonos? In contrast, a humble man is free to enjoy this world. He can appreciate simple pleasures, get along with people and maintain happy, fulfilling relationships. Ok, so you know which one you want to be. How do you get there?

Becoming a Whole Person: Session 4
Session 4: Life Brings Humility
In previous classes, we learned how the cornerstone to all middos is humility. In Life Brings Humility, Rabbi Shafier builds upon this fundamental principle by exploring the devastating influence of arrogance. We all agree that arrogance is ugly, but our mesorah goes further: arrogance will inevitably lead a person to forget Hashem. Afterall, when we’re so sure of our own competence and independence, we don’t need a Master. We are in this world to serve Hashem, but when we are consumed by gaaveh, our avoda is ruined, because our intentions define every action. Arrogance will make us h

Our ego, left unchecked, will run rampant with delusions of grandeur. It’s so soothing to genuinely believe that I am better than others, I am successful, important, incredibly talented and more than that- the way I am now will last forever. In this candid shiur, Rabbi Shafier picks apart the anatomy of arrogance, showing us where our thinking becomes illogical and driven by our need to feel good about ourselves. Does that mean we should negate our abilities and squash our victories? Absolutely not. But as Torah Jews striving to live an authentic life, we have a responsibility to get real about ourselves and start acknowledging that our talents are gifts from Hashem, given to us to fulfill our role in this world.

Vayeishiv - Living Like a Rock
In this week’s parsha, Rashi explains how the lives of tzadikim, beloved to Hashem, are described in detail in the Torah. This is in contrast to reshaim like Eisav whose lives are not dwelled upon. Rashi compares the reshaim to ‘rocks’, something that is discarded when searching for a gem in the sand. The implication is that a life of evil is as worthless as a rock.
What is the value of a human life? Although the chemical composition of man is worth little more than $980, in the Torah’s eyes, a life is invaluable. But are we living our best life? How we can we ensure we’re not ‘living like a rock’, going through the motions of life but not adding anything of lasting value? Our potential in

Parshas Toldos- Appreciation
By the age of fifteen, Eisav had already killed a man, lived with a married woman, denied the Torah and renounced mitzvos, techias hameisim and olam haba. Devoid of morality, it seems puzzling that he was so careful to honor his father Yitzchak. In this captivating Shmuz, Rabbi Shafier tackles the subject of appreciation, analysing why kibud av was so instinctive to Eisav, how we can get better at it in our own lives and why genuine hakaras hatov is our ticket to a happy and meaningful life.

Parshas Chayei Sara- Actors on the Stage of Life
In Actors on the Stage of Life Rabbi Shafier delves into the ultimate tafkid of Sara Imeinu. Despite her incredible accomplishments, we can learn from the Chumash that her role was primarily to become the mother of Am Yisroel through Yitzchak Avinu. For our own lives, this delivers some powerful lessons-the futility of comparing ourselves with others, the fallacy of judging those around us and the freedom to accept the stage of life that Hashem has placed us in.

Parshas Lech Lecha- A Diamond With A Flaw
Out of the ten trials of Avraham Avinu, his descent to Mitzrayim is described by the Ramban as a ‘great, unintentional sin’. In fact, throughout the Torah, we see many instances of the Avos and Imahos challenged and even criticized by our Mesorah.
What are we to learn from these so-called ‘mistakes’? Why do we value failings more than those that lived completely righteous lives? In contradiction to popular thinking, Rabbi Shafier urges us to face our own faults head on, and shows us how to improve and grow whilst keeping our sense of self intact. It’s an essential shmuz for anyone confused by guilt, unsure of their value or looking to become a better person.

# 235 One Small Step for a Man
It was July of 1969, when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon, took his first steps, and announced, “It’s a small step for a man, a giant leap for mankind.”
With those words he entered history as the man who walked on the moon.
Yet how much of the credit goes to him? Buzz Aldrin stepped down but a few moments later, and no one remembers him. But even more, it took thousands of men, hundreds of year to develop the science and technology to put a man into space. So how much is him and how much is he but a cog in the wheel?

#249 What Happened to my Bitachon?
Bitachon can’t be learned from a book. We can learn the theory, get a grip on the fundamentals of our hashkafa and think we know that we trust in Hashem. But until we are really tested, we have no idea whether our bitachon is real or not. Being naturally optimistic or anxious isn’t an indication of where we’re holding in bitachon-that’s nothing more than a reflection of our personality. To acquire genuine bitachon is a growth process, an emotional reality that goes beyond an intellectual understanding. In this candid shmuz, Rabbi Shafier explains ‘what happened to my bitachon’ when we find ourselves in a difficult situation and suddenly discover that we don’t have so much menuchas hanefesh afterall. How can we make what we learn a real part of our emotional reality? Listen to this shmuz and get the tools to see Hashem in your life and bring theory into reality.

This Tisha B’Av, take the time to reset your perspective. Realize what we are missing, and mourn.

It wasn’t easy toimagine what a dangerous, frightening, unpredictable world meant.
Is it still hard? I don’t think so. Even thesceptics agree with the Chofetz Chaimztl, who said before Moshiach comes, it will feel like the world is spinningfaster and faster and faster.
When will it stop?

Ok, everyone knows how it feels to be criticized. Everyone agrees that it’s damaging to our most precious relationships. Some people have lived under the shadow of criticism their whole life, and have the arduous task of trying to rebuild their self-esteem and confidence. So if it’s so incredibly obvious as to why we shouldn’t do it- why do we? Parshas Pinchas: How To Restore Balance, Focus and Meaning to Your Life
In this week’s Parsha, Pinchas is given the bris shalom after defending the honor of Hashem. Four hundred years ago, The Seforno explained that as a result of this gift, Pinchas was granted longevity. By living ‘at peace with himself’ Pinchas was able to live a longer, healthier life.
Would you like to live more at peace with yourself? Be less stressed, more grounded? It’s hard to know where to start.

As always, the lessons of the Parsha offer us all a startling perspective. Want to hear more on how you can make lasting changes to improve your life, get healthy and enjoy yo

The Shmuz Live 47- Bilam and the Unbridled Love of HASHEM
The episode of Bilaam and the donkey is often viewed as something comical. Bilaam’s donkey won’t move, Bilaam gets angry and the two of them have a conversation about it. A man arguing with his donkey isn’t exactly an everyday occurrence-why doesn’t he stop and acknowledge the outright miracle that he’s experiencing? And whilst this may be a humorous part of the parsha, if you fail to see beyond the pshat you’d be missing an incredible life lesson.
You see, it often happens that we go through stuff, and don’t see the reason. In fact, we might even get upset, annoyed or even angry at Hashem when things don’t turn out the way we want them to. So what’s a better way to cope with the curve balls of life? In this straight-talking shmuz, I’ll be giving clear direction on how to maximize moments of frustration into opportunities for everlasting growth.

The Shmuz Live 46 Emunah and Bitachon
Understanding and Integrating the Difference Between Emunah and Bitachon
Do you believe in Hashem, but sometimes feel that He’s out to get you? Then you have emunah, but lack bitachon. You see, it’s not enough to simply recognize that Hashem runs the world. As frum Jews, we are also meant to internalize that Hashem is directly involved in our own lives and knows what is best for us. Too many of our problems in bitachon stem from the fact that we think we know better than G-d. Too often we assume we know the bigger picture, and feel abandoned by our Creator. In this week’s Shmuz Live, Rabbi Shafier will be sharing some practical ideas on how to make Hashem real. Pick a method that speaks to you, and transform your life into one of genuine trust and menuchas hanefesh.
