Exhaust #256: The Pro Motocross Preview

Yeah! The great outdoors are here with the 2024 AMA Pro Motocross Championship, and Jason Weigandt, Jason Thomas and Steve Matthes argue and debate the hot topics from both classes in our annual Pro Motocross preview shows. We've clipped the audio from our videos to present these shows in podcast form. So listen in your car, while you're mowing the lawn, or while you're working out. You know JT would need this during one of his three workouts each day.  The Racer X Exhaust podcast is brought to you by Yoshimura, On Track School, and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #255: Nathan Ramsey

Nate Ramsey, one of the all-time winningest 125/250F supercross racers, has carved out a great post-racing career, now as team manager of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna. Jason Weigandt rang up Nate Dogg to get the inside story on RJ Hamsphire's 250SX West Region title, and how stressful the day felt at Salt Lake City, as well as Hampshire's race strategy. Did you know finishing second in the heat race was actually an advantage? They also talk about old bikes, and how the 2022 new-generation platform that Hampshire vocally criticized has now morphed into a great race bike. Could Zach Osborne's 2017-2018 250F Championship bikes compete? What about Nate's old (legendary) Honda CRF450R? Yeah, bikes have come a long way. Weigandt chats with Ramsey about it all. Exhaust #254: The Ex Team Manager, Part 2 (Suzuki's Mike Webb)

Mike Webb tells more behind-the-scenes stories from working with Ryan Dungey and James Stewart with Team Suzuki. Plus, how it all shut down. Mike Webb lived the dream life, moving to the top of the racing food chain, as Suzuki team manager for the off-road squad and then transitioning into the top of the motocross and supercross team. From tons of GNCC championships to working with Ryan Dungey and James Stewart, Mike saw it all. However, it's not always as glorious as it seems, as Mike's time in the supercross paddock came after Roger De Coster and Ian Harrison left for KTM, and Suzuki's support budget was starting to wane. Mike inherited Ryan Dungey and the 450SX and 450MX titles, but Dungey wanted to leave with Roger, immediately. His Suzuki contract forced him to stay. Then Mike and company faced hard luck trying to defend the titles with Dungey, which left a mark. Mike eventually rebuilt with none other than James Stewart. Years later, Suzuki would shut Mike's factory program down, not once, but twice. There are some deep, deep stories from behind the scenes in this interview you won't want to miss. This is part 2 of our two-part podcast with Webb. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #252: Cooper Webb

Jason Weigandt and Jason Thomas got some time this week to talk to Cooper Webb and quiz him on how he approached the final stretch of the season and got the points lead back to a tie with four races to go. Also, he reveals what he's learned about Jett Lawrence's riding style, why things work so well for him with Monster Energy/Yamaha Star Racing, and why he always had such a tough time keeping the weight off -- he has Hashimoto's disease, which impacts the thyroid. With a lot of research and hard work, and his own special brand of grit, Webb has set up an amazing final four races in Monster Energy AMA Supercross. Here's how. Exhaust #251: The Cianciarulo Career

There was so much anticipation for Adam Cianciarulo's pro career when it began a little over a decade ago, and now we can look back at it in full because he's announced his retirement. Jason Weigandt has a few thoughts from Adam to share (via the SMX Insider show's exclusive interview) and then Weigandt adds his own thoughts. Hardly anyone had expectations to live up to like Adam did, because he was entering the ranks right on the heels of a 15-year run of Kawasaki Team Green prospects going straight to the top immediately, through Ricky Carmichael, James Stewart, and Ryan Villopoto. Thus, the microscope was on Adam right from the start to see if he could be the next one, and for a brief moment, he delivered by winning supercross races immediately. Unfortunately, injuries then kicked in, leaving everyone wondering what might have been. Adam surely wondered this more than anyone, but was also able to gain perspective from it all. He might not have won all the races he would have won if he was healthy, but he might have emerged from the process as a better person. That's why his legacy is now not as one of the winningest riders ever, but one of the most liked.    The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #250: Carson Brown's Secret

Should dirt bikes get faster or slower? Better might not be better. Carson Brown has top-five supercross speed but prefers to rip on old bikes, minis, two-strokes and more. He knows slower and simpler is definitely more fun, and ultimately, probably better. Even if it's worse! While today's bikes posses an amazing blend of power and traction and undoubtably better than old stuff from an engineering standpoint, that capability means more speed, bigger jumps and more cost. Brown has legit speed, and was a top-five threat in 250SX West Region as recently as as 2022. But his real specialty is pit bikes, two-strokes and more, as evidenced by his unbelievable Instagram account where he rips modern-sized obstacles with modern style on bikes that were never intended for such. It's unreal to watch! As part of the famous BBR (Brown Brothers Racing) family that has become iconic in pit bike performance, Carson has ridden more bikes than most. He's having a really good time. What has he learned about mins, two-strokes and more? He's learned that they can be more fun than the big, new stuff. What's more, racing them could be better, too. Is this a message we should be hearing? Jason Weigandt chats with Carson in the latest edition of the Racer X Exhaust Podcast. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #249: Coty Schock's Remarkable Journey

Jason Weigandt calls up Muc-Off/FXR/ClubMX Yamaha's Coty Schock to of course ask about his miraculous collarbone recovery in one week, but also to get his back story. Coty was absolutely, positively not on the motocross radar when he was younger, but he's gone from barely making the fast 40 night show qualification in supercross to on the verge of a podium. A lot has happened a long the way. Here's Coty's story. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand. Check out the Merch Madness sale and save up to 50%!

Exhaust #248: Randy Hawkins on Off-Road's Resurgence

Randy Hawkins is a member of the AMA Hall of Fame partially for his success as a racer, with seven AMA National Enduro Championships, and also for helping carry the load for American off-road racing in general. This is Randy's 28th season running the Am-Pro Yamaha off-road squad, which is Yamaha's factory program in the Progressive Grand National Cross Country Series and basically anywhere Yamaha races in the woods. Randy has seen the ups and downs for factory off-road racing, from "getting fired" by Team Suzuki as a racer, to setting up a fledgling Yamaha program in the early days, to developing four-strokes for off-road, and riding out the economic storm of the Great Recession. These days off-road is back in a huge way, from bike sales, to race entries, to factory budgets, and even the types of machines the manufacturers are now producing. Randy, one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, had a chat with Jason Weigandt to explain how things started, and how it's going. Exhaust #247: The Hustler

Former WMX Racer Sara Price fought, battled, and clawed her way to a driving career, and nearly won Dakar in her first attempt. She was once a WMX racer with support from Kawasaki Team Green, but when her moto career, and the factory support for WMX racing, went away, she had to find a new way to stay competitive. She set her sights on off-road racing in trucks, but the process of succeeding on four wheels is far different from motocross. Sara joins Jason Weigandt to explain truck and car racing, which is based heavily on burning up the phones and emails to try to get financial support. It's a lot of hearing no, all in hopes of one big yes that can get you into a seat. After great success in Baja racing, Sara's goal has always been to tackle the famous Dakar Rally, which she finally got to do this year. And she battled for her win in her first attempt! Further, her boyfriend Ricky Brabec won the race in the motorcycle division. Sara's also an accomplished stunt driver and rider, and even appeared in a Toyota Super Bowl commercial on Sunday. There's a lot to talk about here. Check it out.   The Racer X Exhaust podcast is hosted by Jason Weigandt and presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #246: Prado, Ducati, and More with Adam Wheeler

Acclaimed international journalist Adam Wheeler took a quick trip to California to check in on Monster Energy AMA Supercross, so Jason Weigandt and Jason Thomas found some time to ask him what his thinks about topics he's covered for a long time: Jorge Prado, Ducati and the Lawrence brothers. Enjoy a good conversation with one of the best journalists in motorcycle racing today. The Racer X Exhaust pod is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X brand.

Exhaust #244: Post Race Press Conference San Francisco

After a wild mud race at round 2 of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, hear from podium riders Chase Sexton, Eli Tomac, and Ken Roczen (450), and Jordon Smith, Levi Kitchen, and Garrett Marchbanks (250) in the post-race press conference, hosted by Dan Hubbard. Sexton and Tomac were happy to go 1-2 in these conditions, but they were just as happy with the improvements they felt they made during the week, and they think they would have been much better in the dry, also.   The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand, and hosted by Jason Weigandt.

Exhaust #243: Justin Cooper

Justin Cooper isn't one to draw attention to himself, so he's actually okay coming into his first full 450 season under the radar. There's less pressure that way, especially considering Cooper Webb and Eli Tomac are his teammates, and the standards for those guys are very high. But JCoop knows how to ride, he's been up front for his entire 250 career, and Anaheim proved he could be good on a 450, also. When Ken Roczen and Malcolm Stewart got collected and went down early, Cooper got claimed as well. He got up in 20th, and then rallied all the way back to eighth against a stacked field. He even passed Tomac, who was struggling. Maybe JCoop should be getting more attention. Jason Weigandt ringed him up to give him some. Exhaust #241: Pre Season Rider Check In

After a week chatting up riders out in California, Jason Weigandt tries to cut through the clutter. There’s an annual pre-season tradition of every rider feeling faster, fitter and stronger for the new year, but that actually won’t be the case for everyone once the racing season begins. Weege tries to cram in as many scoops and angles as he can in this podcast, summing up conversations with nearly every top racer, including Eli Tomac, Chase Sexton, Jett and Hunter Lawrence, Jason Anderson, Justin Barcia, Malcolm Stewart, Dylan Ferrandis, Christian Craig, Adam Cianciarulo, Justin Cooper, Levi Kitchen, Seth Hammaker, Max Vohland, Austin Forkner, Jalek Swoll, Colt Nichols, Benny Bloss and more. Exhaust #240: Phoenix Honda’s David Eller

Phoenix Racing has been a championship player in a variety of racing series, including dominance in AMA Arenacross and AMA Pro ATV Motocross, and also operates Honda’s factory GNCC team. It has only been a side player in AMA Supercross and AMA Pro Motocross, however, until now. By adding Dylan Ferrandis to the team for the full 2024 season indoors and out, they've got a chance at podiums and race wins. How did this deal come about and how is the team preparing for this step? Jason Weigandt chats with Eller and Phoenix team manager Heath Harrison about the move.   The Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura, Leatt, and Steel City Men’s Clinic.

Exhaust #239: Dylan Ferrandis

Dylan Ferrandis’ 2023 season was filled with frustration, as more injuries mounted in Monster Energy Supercross, and he could not gel with his bike in Pro Motocross. The Frenchman was even considering retirement at one point because he was no longer having fun on the motorcycle. This is a rider who wears his emotions on his sleeve and always tells you how he feels. What he really wanted to try was a Honda, but it wasn’t easy to find a spot to race one. Enter David Eller of Phoenix Honda and Rick “Ziggy” Zielfelder of Factory Connection, with support for Dylan in 2024. Jason Weigandt chatted with Dylan, who is always brutally honest, about the frustration of supercross, his ’23 troubles, and his hopes for the future.     The Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura, Leatt, and Steel City Men’s Clinic.

Exhaust #238: Brandon Hartranft

After a huge crash one year ago changed his life, The Brick is looking for purpose. Now he's teaming with Cooper Webb for a new online training program.   The news was grim back in March when Jason Weigandt called Brandon Hartranft for an update. In the 2023 pre-season, Hartranft's engine cut out in a rhythm lane, and he went down hard. He was lucky to escape without getting paralyzed, but the road back to normal life was still extremely painful and frustrating. From major concussion problems to nerve damage and fused bones in his back, life has been tough for Brandon. Plus, his racing days are likely over, which is a stark reality for any athlete to confront.    Cooper Webb has been a key friend to Brandon throughout this process, and now they've teamed up for a new training program, called Alphamotocrossdynamics, which provides online training and coaching. Brandon has moved to Florida, which also allows him to work hands-on with riders in the area, as well. Jason Weigandt checks in with Hartranft this time to see how he's doing physically and mentally, and also how Alphamotocrossdynamics works.   The Racer X Exhaust podcast is sponsored by Yoshimura, Leatt, and Steel City Men's Clinic.

Exhaust #237: Off-Road Training with Cody Webb

Endurocross and Trials Champion Cody Webb has launched a new online training and coaching program to help climb those mountains.   Jason Weigandt checks in with AMA Endurocross, Hard Enduro, and Trials Champion Cody Webb. Endurocross has kicked off for 2023, and Webb is looking to regain the title. Cody talks about his transition from KTM to Sherco and the journey to get that bike and brand to the top, as well as his own struggles with injuries. Plus, he's launched a new online training program for hard enduro type riding. Want to learn to climb some mountains, or just not be "that guy" on your next trail ride with buddies? Cody can help. Exhaust #236: MXoN with Roczen, Team USA and France

Jason Weigandt jumps into the discussion on the FIM Monster Energy Motocross of Nations, breaking down how the race was won by Team France (which has now won seven times in the last 10 years), as well as the performance of Team USA, Ken Roczen and more. This podcast also contains post-race audio from the Team USA trio of RJ Hampshire, Aaron Plessinger, and Christian Craig, as well as Roczen and Team France’s Romain Febvre, Maxime Renaux and Tom Vialle.   If Team USA doesn’t win, it usually creates heartbreak from U.S. racing fans, but spirits were different this time because expectations for the Craig/Plessinger/Hampshire trio were not as high as for last year’s Cooper/Tomac/Sexton squad. But would just getting the likes of Sexton and Tomac back on the team in 2024 automatically solve the problem? Weigandt wonders aloud if the 2022 RedBud win is really a sign that Team USA is back, or if the struggles from 2012-2021 might still remain. Also, he discusses the recent love for Ken Roczen, and if Team Australia will be able to get one of these Chamberlain Trophies during the window of the Lawrence brothers. Much to discuss, and here it is.   The Racer X Exhaust Podcast is hosted by Jason Weigandt and sponsored by Yoshimura, Leatt, and Steel City Men's Clinic. Also, be sure to visit RacerXBrand.com and check out our apparel.

Exhaust #235: How SMX Came to Be

Now that fans, teams, and riders are truly experiencing the SMX playoffs firsthand, Jason Weigandt circles back to the story of how this all started, with a quick meeting between Feld Motor Sports and MX Sports Pro Racing at Daytona of 2020, then COVID soon after, then cooperation on a much higher level. Weigandt runs through how the two series worked together to form one uniform television package for the first time, where the idea of a unified championship with both series working together came from, how the race teams finally felt a sense of cooperation, and how the FIM ended up no longer involved in American racing (which led the FIM to take bids for a new promotional partner for a new supercross championship, which we now know as WSX. Believe it or not, the seeds of SMX led to WSX being created, which is the opposite of what you probably think). This is a rare look way inside the inner workings of racing behind the scenes.    The Racer X Exhaust Podcast is presented by Yoshimura, Leatt and the Steel City Men's Clinic.

Exhaust #233: The Fast Transition

Hard to believe this season started as a celebration of Eli Tomac's greatness and the new age limits for winners in the sport, and has ended with a whole new generation rushing to the top of the charts. Eli and his peers will be back, but it has very quickly become the dawn of Jett and Hunter Lawrence and Chase Sexton at the top, plus Haiden Deegan making immediate noise in his first pro season. It's the dynamic of these personalities, all with a never-give-up spirit, that will make the next years of battles quite interesting to watch. And hey, eventually Tomac will be back!   Jason Weigandt riffs on the sudden transition and just how amazing Jett's perfect season really was. Plus, audio from Jett, Hunter, Chase and Aaron Plessinger via the post-race press conference.   The Racer X Exhaust Podcast is hosted by Jason Weigandt and sponsored by Yoshimura, Leatt, Steel City Men's Clinic, and the WD-40 brand. Also, be sure to visit RacerXBrand.com and check out our all-new summer line of apparel.

Exhaust #232: All Things with Zach Osborne

Jason Weigandt checks in on the current GNCC racer for an update on the woods, and his thoughts on motocross, riding styles, and more.   Zach Osborne's attempt to become a contender in the Grand National Cross Country series has not gone to plan, with a pair of injuries essentially ruining the first half of his first season with Am-Pro Yamaha. He's finally healthy, though, and ready for the series to resume in mid-September. For now, Zach's over in England racing the Vets Motocross des Nations on a YZ250 two-stroke. So we asked him about that and racing in the woods, then began chatting about current motocross: Zach thinks Eli Tomac actually started the new trend in riding that Jett Lawrence has now taken to an almost artful form, and Zach himself is still learning and trying to improve his game by incorporating those techniques. Zacho chats all things dirt bikes with Jason Weigandt in this episode of the Racer X Exhaust Podcast.

Exhaust #231: Ryno Style (With Ryan Hughes)

In an extended version of the interview Racer X Online posted last week, Jason Weigandt catches up with Ryan Hughes to talk about his new relationship with Austin Forkner, how it started, and how it's going. It all flows into Hughes' determined pursuit to refine the way people ride a motorcycle, in hopes that they'll be smoother, safer and more efficient. By the way, that's the exact opposite of the way Hughes rode in his pro days. Back then, he was all about pushing harder, harder and harder. Ryno might seem stubborn, but he's learned the hard way to change his ways, and now he's preaching to others. Let's see how it goes with Forkner!

Exhaust #230: What Happened at Loretta's

Confused by the mishmash of classes at the Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn's Ranch? Don't worry, that's common. Amateur racing features so many classes it's hard to know who really performed well. Jason Weigandt breaks down the reason the classes exist at Loretta's, and who actually did well in each division. Who should you get to know soon, and who is coming up after that? Weigandt, who was there announcing all the motos, helps explain an entire week in about 30 minutes. Also, you can find out the methods to the track crew's madness when the rain came. Whatever they did, it worked, because somehow they crammed all the motos in on Saturday, even when all hope looked lost.   The Racer X Exhaust Podcast is hosted by Jason Weigandt and sponsored by Yoshimura, Leatt, Steel City Men's Clinic, and the WD-40 brand. Also, be sure to visit RacerXBrand.com and check out our all-new line of apparel.

Exhaust #229: The Masterpool Situation

You can mark it on your calendar. Each summer, usually around RedBud, Ty Masterpool starts hauling butt and reminding everyone that he has serious talent. Then comes the cries from fans to put Ty on a factory motorcycle. Yet, it's 2023 and Ty, who sits sixth in 450MX points despite not even racing the 450 class at the opening round, is yet again a privateer, under the HBI Racing tent.   There are many misunderstandings and rumors about the Masterpool plan. Some think Ty and his family don't want to race or succeed in supercross. Some think they don't want Ty to race at all. Some think they don't want to work with a factory team.   Ty is not a rider of many words, but he is making it clear he would love a factory bike and loves supercross. To dive in deeper, Jason Weigandt rang up Ty's father, Jerry, formerly an Olympic Champion coach in Alpine racing (and Ty's mom, Tarah, is one of the pioneers, and a great champion, in snowboarding). But Jerry wants everyone to know this isn't abou t mom and dad. It's about Ty, who wants to race, and the family will support him as far as they possibly can. They would love to see him on a factory team, though!   The Racer X Exhaust Podcast is hosted by Jason Weigandt and sponsored by Yoshimura, Leatt, Steel City Men's Clinic, and the WD-40 brand. Also, be sure to visit RacerXBrand.com and check out our all-new spring line of apparel.

Exhaust #228: Privateer Plan (With Grant Harlan)

A year ago, Grant Harlan was struggling to even make 250 mains in Monster Energy Supercross. In 2023, he made 13 450 mains! That got him into the lucrative top 20 in points, and he's doing even better in Pro Motocross, where he sits 10th in points. Yes, lots of factory riders are out, but at Thunder Valley, Harlan was pressuring Adam Cianciarulo and Cooper Webb late in the second moto! This all bodes well as the first-ever SuperMotocross World Championship looms, which will pay big money to all the riders who qualify. Harlan currently sits 13th in combined AMA Supercross and AMA Motocross points, so he's looking at an automatic bid into the SMX playoffs (top 20 in points are guaranteed entry). As an example, 13th in points at the end of SMX pays $34,000, plus every week the riders in the races will make a couple grand, so Harlan could easily pocket $40-$50k if he keeps this up. That's not all! Harlan is also racing FIM World Supercross, starting this weekend. More races, more mo ney!   Jason Weigandt called up the rider who grew up in Hawaii to get more info on his season, and what's to come.    The Racer X Exhaust Podcast is hosted by Jason Weigandt and sponsored by Yoshimura, Leatt, On Track School, Steel City Men's Clinic, and the WD-40 brand. Also, be sure to visit RacerXBrand.com and check out our all-new spring line of apparel.

Exhaust #227: How Do The SMX Playoffs Work?

Playoffs? Indeed. After the traditional Monster Energy AMA Supercross and AMA Pro Motocross Championships wrap up, the top 30 riders in combined supercross and motocross points are eligible to race three more races in September, with $5.5 million on the line. How will it work? Who gets in? Does the regular season still matter? Jason Weigandt tries to break it down in the most simple form in this podcast.   The Racer X Exhaust Podcast is hosted by Jason Weigandt and sponsored by Yoshimura, Leatt, Steel City Men's Clinic and the WD-40 brand. Also, be sure to visit RacerXBrand.com and check out our all-new spring line of apparel.

Exhaust #225: Nice Guy First (With Chase Sexton)

Jason Weigandt gets an update from the Monster Energy 450 Supercross Champion.   Chase Sexton could or even should be turning into a diva now that he's been a championship contender and race winner consistently in the 450 class, but instead, he seems to become more open, more accommodating and more friendly with each race win. Jason Weigandt chatted with him late last week for an update on Pro Motocross testing and prep, how his championship weekend went in Monster Energy Supercross, and why he's still humble (hint: midwest roots, says Chase).    The Racer X Exhaust Podcast is hosted by Jason Weigandt and sponsored by Yoshimura, Leatt, On Track School and the WD-40 brand. Also, be sure to visit RacerXBrand.com and check out our summer line of apparel.

Exhaust #224: Privateers' Other Income (With Weigandt and Chase Marquier)

Did you know a ton of the privateer heroes in Monster Energy Supercross are also certified by the United States Motorcycle Coaching Association? John Short, Lane Shaw, Chase Marquier, Austin Cozaad, Mason Kerr, Bubba Pauli, Brandon Scharer, AJ Catanzaro and Hunter Yoder all help coach during the week and the off-season, which pays their bills but also helps bring new riders into the game with the right technique. You'd be surprised how many beginners are learning from pros. Jason Weigandt chats with Chase Marquier about his privateer season and also his coaching at home, then rings up coach Wade Moody, who is helping build the next generation of riders in the Maryland area, even getting a few of the "concrete" riders from Baltimore's urban environment onto the dirt, and onto the track at Budds Creek!   Motorcyclecoaching.org is the place to find a coach. You'd be surprised how much this program is helping the sport, both for new riders, and for pros.   The Racer X Exhaust Podcast is hosted by Jason Weigandt and sponsored by Yoshimura, Leatt, On Track School and the WD-40 brand.

Exhaust #221: Jordon Smith

Jordon Smith won his first career 250SX race in Detroit in 2017, and hoped the 2023 edition would bring him similar fortune, but nothing went right on the night for him, and he ultimately didn't even qualify for the main event. Jordon made multiple errors on his own and puts his failure to qualify squarely on himself—but he was also involved in some aggressive racing with his teammate Haiden Deegan in the heat race. That battle ended with Jordon on the ground, and that has led to plenty of talk and opinions this week, but it's only fair to let Jordon tell his side of the story. Jason Weigandt rang him up on a Thursday to hear how it went on Saturday, and how his week has gone since. After taking a few days to reflect on his big win in Indianapolis, Ken Roczen chats with Jason Weigandt about how he and his Progressive/Ecstar HEP Suzuki team made it to the center of the podium, and his mental and physical state at this stage of the season. Weigandt also adds some analysis based on another interview with Roczen's team manager, Larry Brooks. Plus we get Roczen's thoughts from immediately after the race and the post-race press conference. It's already been an exciting season for Monster Energy AMA Supercross, but Roczen's win infuses just that much more drama. Exhaust #219: Ben Kelley's Comeback

After a nail-biting GNCC Championship fight with Stu Baylor in 2021, Ben Kelley looked unstoppable in 2022, winning the first six races in a row. Then? Exhaust #218: Title Defense

Jordan Ashburn's long game plan--consistency above all else--paid off in last year's Grand National Cross Country Series, as the friendly Tennessee native stayed clean while most of his competitors dropped points due to injuries. Consistency has always been Asburn's hallmark, and it paid off by winning last year's GNCC title for Magna 1 Motorsports, which is not even a factory team. Now that two rounds of the 2023 GNCC season are in the books, Jason Weigandt rings up Ashburn to hear about winning last year and defending now. Plus, his forays into other events like the Tennessee Knock Out and Travis Pastrana's Terrainferno. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura, Leatt, WD-40 Brand, and On Track School.

Exhaust #217: Moto Education

A lot of people want to grow this sport, but a lot of obstacles stand in the way. Getting on a motorcycle can be intimidating, plus it requires a lot of sacrifices on time and budget. In order to grow or sustain, we need innovatie ideas. Tyler Livesay, a former pro racer, started the MXFactory, first as a traditional riding school, but eventually branching into instructional videos on YouTube, including many that serve the oft-ignored beginner rider to the sport. Plenty of trainers and coaches want to flex and talk supercross, but Livesay has a program that literally gets people who have never ridden onto dirt bikes and teaches them how to be safe and have fun. There's more advanced stuff, too, but the sport needs new entrants, too. Jason Weigandt talks with Tyler and hears about his unique background in racing, too. Weigandt also rings up friend of the show Andrea Leib of OnTrack School. None other than Ricky Carmichael will actually be graduating from high school this weekend, a good 25 years after racing got in the way!  The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura, Leatt, WD-40 Brand, and On Track School.

Exhaust #216: The Tao of Tomac

Eli Tomac is enjoying the career renaissance his predecessors at the top didn't get. Instead of retiring on top, or retiring when he lost his titles, Eli kept going, reinventing himself with Yamaha and coming back stronger than ever. Fans now see Tomac as the living legend that he is, instead of only realizing what you've got when it's gone. He's also personally enjoying the races more than ever, and rapidly climbing the record books. What leads to this kind of longevity? Jason Weigandt, who has watched most of Tomac's pro races in person and has interviewed him countless times, weighs in. The conclusion is that Eli's career has always been about the long game—and even the occasional “weirdo races,” where he doesn't win, fit a pattern to stay safe, stay in the game, and come out all the better for it. He's reaping massive benefits now, as are his fans. Is he an all-timer? Well, as a racer, yes. But bigger than that, Weigandt wonders out loud: have Eli and his father and trainer, John Tomac, carved out the best career arc in the history of the sport? That is likely the case. Also, Eli himself speaks via this recent interview with Weigandt and Steve Matthes. Enjoy. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura, Leatt, WD-40 Brand, and On Track School.

Jason Weigandt, Steve Matthes, Jason Thomas, and Kris Keefer dig in deep for our annual Monster Energy Racer X Supercross Season Preview Shows, and we've provided the audio-only version here for those who don't want to spent two hours watching on YouTube. The boys talk 450s and 250s here, from top riders to privateers to Matthes' annual rant on 250 riders not declaring coasts (BUT the 250 teams actually did declare since we recorded these shows!). The biggest fights? Is Chase Sexton now at the top tier of the group and ahead of a previous champion like Cooper Webb in the preseason favorites list? Matthes and Weigandt fight on that one, and then Matthes and JT argue about the 2023 Yamaha YZ450F and how that might impact Eli Tomac and more. Oh, and Ken Roczen on a Suzuki! Exhaust #208: Meet Team Triumph

Triumph's heritage in street and road motorcycles is paving the way for an entry into motocross and supercross, with new bikes and a new team for 2024. The brand announced the key players in the race team last week, and Jason Weigandt went to Angel Stadium to talk to them, including Ricky Carmichael, who sees himself as a general manager in picking talent, team principal Bobby Hewitt, and team manager Stephen “Scuba” Westfall, AMA Hall of Fame inductee Dave Arnold as lead chassis engineer, and Dudley Cramond joins as lead powertrain engineer. Jeremy Appleton, the global racing manager, joins Weigandt as well. Exhaust #207: Cameron McAdoo Never Settles

Cameron McAdoo wants it bad. He might want it too much! His process of improvement means he has to keep the drive and desire that brought him from unknown to factory rider and race winner, but also refine his riding to avoid mistakes. He was looking good last year while fighting for the 250SX East crown until a crash on press day, when he wasn't even pushing, cost him big. He hopes to do better this year. If you want to hear about mixing the drive, ambition, and emotion of wanting to win in the worst way, and what goes on in the mind of a young racer, listen in on this conversation with McAdoo and Jason Weigandt. Exhaust #206: Meet Caden Braswell

Caden Braswell took the industry by storm at the Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships over the summer, when he won the 250 Pro Sport division and took second in Open Pro Sport, finishing on the podium in five of six motos. He did it the hard way, too, overcoming some big names in his consistent charges from the middle of the pack to the front. Loretta's longer, rougher motos (they increased to 25 minutes this year) helped showcase his skills and strength—the kind of stuff that matters more at the pro level compared to the sprint speed that defines a lot of amateur racing.  Then there's the personality! Caden has a unique, deep outlook on life and doesn't sound like the typical racer. Jason Weigandt gets down to it in this interview with Braswell. They talk about his new deal with Phoenix Honda, racing the Mini O's to get his supercross points, and even some AMA Arenacross, all in prep for supercross in 2023. Exhaust #205: Why JGRMX Mattered

The sudden passing of Coy Gibbs on Sunday morning has given the entire motocross industry a chance to reflect on the legacy of Coy and the team he founded, JGRMX, which raced from 2008–2020. When the team was first announced in the summer of 2007, it seemed primed to dominate, with the Gibbs family's sterling reputation in both the NFL and NASCAR, as well as the resources it could pour into the team. Well, the revolution Coy Gibbs planned actually did come to the sport, as his Eastern-based team concept is now commonplace with other successful teams in the industry. JGRMX itself, however, won a few races but never the expected titles. This leads to two questions: Why did it not win more? And why does the legacy of this team, and its owner, feel much stronger than their results would indicate? Anyone who knew Coy and his team personally could tell you. This was an experience unlike any other. Jason Weigandt dives in with this episode of the Racer X Exhaust podcast. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Leatt.

Exhaust #204: Forward March (w/ Shane McElrath)

Two years ago, Shane McElrath was battling Chase Sexton for a 250SX Regional Championship. Today, Sexton is a bright shining star in the sport with multiple 450 wins and championship potential of the highest order. McElrath, meanwhile, has been battling just to get a ride, anywhere. He missed most of the '21 season with a back injury, riding for SmarTop/Bullfrog Spas MotoConcepts Honda. Then he ended up on four different teams in 2022, including one that folded, two fill-in rides, and then a a shot at building a team with Rick Ware Racing for the new World Supercross Championship. It was thrown together quickly, but Shane emerged with the SX2 Championship. Now, finally, he thinks he has some stability for the future, and a chance to show what he can do. Exhaust #203: Worst and Best (w/ Colt Nichols)

Colt Nichols might have experienced more highs and lows than anyone in the game right now. Coming off last year's 250SX East Supercross Championship, he never even scored a point in 2022, crashing out of his Anaheim 1 heat race while running in 250SX West. The injuries were bad, and Colt never made it back to a race. Then came more pain: an injury clause meant he wasn't getting paid, then he asked to get out of his Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing contract early so he could get a head start with a new 450 team. Then that team closed. Then he tried to rush together an effort to race FIM World Supercross. He was running out of time and that wasn't working as he had hoped. Then, when it seemed like everything was going wrong, something went right: after parting with Ken Roczen, Honda had a 450 opening in supercross. Just like that, Nichols got a supercross deal with a highly coveted factory squad. Now he's betting on himself for 2023, looking to make an impact in his rookie 450 season. Jason Weigandt rings up Colt to learn the details, including the injury timeline, pay, home sales, training, prep, and so much more. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Leatt.

Exhaust #201: Team USA's Inside Organizer (w/ Christina Denney)

The struggle at RedBud in 2018 for Team USA laid the flaws bare for all to see: winning the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations now takes more than just three fast riders. Other nations, such as France, have stepped up the organization of their program, and the Americans would have to do better. There were signs of that for 2019 in Assen, but hopes there were washed away, almost literally. Team USA didn't compete in 2020 and 2021. This year the team promised a renewed effort, and it delivered, both with improved team unity and spirit but also in the darned result. The team won! Christina Denney, whom you might remember as the team manager of Rock River Yamaha for many years, has taken on a key role within the team, and along with many others has transformed Team USA's operations.  Says Roger De Coster himself: "On our team, everyone worked very hard, but I think the hardest-working person besides our riders was Christina. I want to thank her for the crazy amount of work she put in." What did Denney do? What other key roles are there within the team? How does it help? Here's the inside story on Team USA's new structure.  The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Leatt.

Exhaust #199: FIM WSX Year One (with Adam Bailey)

Following the 2021 season, Feld Motorsports did not renew its sanctioning agreement with the FIM in Monster Energy Supercross. For 2022, the Monster Energy Supercross Championship would go back to exclusive sanctioning through the AMA, and the FIM announced it would look for new partners to keep an FIM World Supercross Championship going. The new partners came in the form of a group called SX Global, which included AUS-X Open principals Adam Bailey and Ryan Sanderson, as well as Tony Cochran, a key figure in the growth of Australia's V8 Supercar auto racing series. Plus, they announced the capital investment of an Abu Dhabi–based company. The group is calling the 2022 events a "pilot season," and it appears it will consist of just two races, one in Wales and one in Australia. Jason Weigandt chatted with Adam Bailey on Thursday morning to hear about the challenges and process of getting the first season going, and what the group hopes to accomplish in the future.  Note: Ken Roczen will be participating in the two FIM World Supercross Championship races, but his announcement that he is now a free agent and will not be back with Honda HRC in the U.S. in 2023 came after this interview with Bailey took place. The Friday night Staging Area show featured James Stewart as a guest host alongside Jason Weigandt and Jason Thomas, and then Eli Tomac showed he felt no pressure for the final race by stopping by for a chat. James was impressed Eli even came over! Then Scouting Moto Combine winner Noah Viney came by with his coach for the day, Chad Reed, which meant Chad and James were on the show together! As if that's not enough, Hunter and Jett Lawrence came by to close the show. Stew and the Lawrences catch the fever! Oh, and then there was the matter of the actual race, which was won by Tomac, who claimed his fourth 450 MX title in dramatic winner-take-all fashion. Weigandt drops in a post-race interview with Eli here to get the once-again champion's take on the day. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura, Leatt, and AOMC.

Exhaust #197: Last Showdown (w/ Jeff Emig)

Jason Weigandt calls Jeff Emig in this podcast to get the emotion behind final-round showdowns. Fro came out on top the last time the AMA National Championship in the premier class was this close at the finale. In 1996, Emig held a two-point lead on Jeremy McGrath coming into the final round of the AMA National Motocross Championship, meaning a 1-1 score for either rider would decide the title. It has taken over 25 years to get this scenario again, as Eli Tomac and Chase Sexton are now separated by just one point, so winning both motos guarantees the title.  In '96, Emig came through with the 1-1 at Steel City to win the title. Jason Weigandt called Emig this week to hear the story of living the most important week of your life—and you'll get even more pumped up when you hear Emig riff on the focus, the emotion, and the determination needed to win in this environment. In fact, Emig says this type of pressure is the thing he misses most about racing. Weigandt also drops in press conference quotes from Sexton and Tomac, to detect if they're thinking the same way Emig did back then. Exhaust #196: Finally Working Together (w/ Roger De Coster & Bruce Stjernstrom)

News broke a few weeks ago of the new level of cooperation between Feld Motorsports (producers of Monster Energy Supercross) and MX Sports Pro Racing (producers of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross) and the resulting SuperMotocross World Championship, a set of three races that will run at the end of next season. The whole plan is to bring both series—and these three new races at the end of the year—under one arrangement for a TV/media deal, marketing, and more, plus better collaboration on rulebooks, drug testing, scheduling, and more. They will both crown their existing champions, then add this new title at the end of the season as well. You could listen to officials from Feld Motorsports and MX Sports tell you how awesome this will be, but of course they think it's great. Jason Weigandt talked to two of the most unfiltered voices in the sport, KTM Groups North American Director of Motorsports Roger De Coster and Kawasaki Racing's Bruce Stjernstrom, to get their take. What you'll learn is this is about much more than a three-race playoff. This is the industry working together for the first time. Growth, hopefully, can follow. Exhaust #195: The Deegan Deal

Check out our Insight Story posted on Wednesday for an attempt to wrap up the hours and hours of interviews with folks involved in Brennan Schofield's attempt to claim (purchase) Haiden Deegan's bike at Loretta's, which is legal under AMA amateur rules. If you'd rather have an audio version, Jason Weigandt tries to wrap it all up here in this latest Exhaust Podcast. What happened and when? Some of the info is now out there, although for certain few will ever believe we have the true story of who is to blame and why Schofield didn't end up getting a bike that was rightfully his. Exhaust #193: Da Rippahs (w/ Henry, Dowd & Decotis)

On Friday before the Southwick National, New England fan favorites Doug Henry, John Dowd, and Jimmy Decotis stopped by the Monster Energy Stage to share some memories and talk about what they're doing today. For Dowd and Henry, the story is simple: the legends are now part of the Southwick track crew! Jimmy D, meanwhile, stepped away from racing two years ago and had been quiet since, but now he's back on the bike and working with young riders in the area. He's also planning to race Southwick for fun next year!  The real kicker? The humble stories of Dowd and Henry. Did you know Doug came to Southwick as a fan, just watching on the fence, and then six years later he was the 125 National Motocross Champion? That's crazy, but for Doug Henry, it's normal. Exhaust #187: American Road Racing Tries a Comeback (w/ Rob Buydos)

Jason Weigandt riffs on lessons learned from American road racing for motorcycles and how that can apply to motocross and supercross. Weigandt has been getting deeper inside the road racing scene in both MotoAmerica and MotoGP, and the story of rises, falls, and rises is both intriguing and carries some parallels. Part of the comeback story in the U.S. is the attempt to find other, more popular street bikes and take them to the racetrack, because sales of traditional sport bikes have dropped way, way off from 20 years ago. To that end, two racing series—MotoAmerica’s King of the Baggers and Rob Buydos’ Bagger Racing League—try to stoke the flames by getting the American V-Twin crowd (Harley people) onto the track. In the meantime, Dorna’s MotoGP Series is pushing MotoAmerica hard to create more U.S. talent, and some of those riders are starting to make their way to Europe now. Weigandt takes you through the ins and outs and then talks to Buydos for more on the Bagger Racing League. Exhaust #176: What If School Is In the Way of Racing?

It's a thing we know about but few discuss: pursuing a career as a professional racer requires a lot of riding and training at a young age. This puts parents and racers in a tough spot. Stay in regular school and ride and train less? Or go for the racing dream and figure out a way to continue with education? Andrea Leib faced the same conundrum when her son Michael started to break through in the amateur ranks. To cope, she started On Track School, which provides a virtual private education so riders don't choose the Homeschool = No School route, but instead actually learn and get a real degree. Now many of today and yesterday's top amateur riders are getting their education through On Track. Jason Weigandt talks to her about the process in this Exhaust Podcast, presented by Yoshimura, Leatt, and, yes, On Track School.

Exhaust #170: The Craziest Season (w/Jason Thomas and Kellen Brauer)

Two riders tied for the points lead heading into the final moto, a third rider within mathematical striking distance, plus the retirement of an all-time legend of the series, racing in his home country. There might not ever be a finale to a racing series quite like this year’s Monster Energy FIM Motocross World Championship, and two Racer X staffers, Jason Thomas and Kellen Brauer, got to experience the atmosphere in person. You think the Italian fans got rowdy? Yeah, just a bit. In this edition of the Racer X Exhaust Podcast, Jason Weigandt chats with Thomas and Brauer to hear and feel what it was like to be there. Plus, copious bench racing about Jeffrey Herlings, Romain Febvre, Tim Gajser, Tony Cairoli, and more, and talk about GP salaries and tracks. Exhaust #169: AJ Catanzaro Makes Money as a Privateer

When AJ Catanzaro was 17 and just trying to break into the sport as a professional, he knew the road would be difficult. So he went a different way. By focusing on teaching and riding schools, then a YouTube channel, and now an interactive app, Catanzaro has stayed ahead of the curve to carve out his own business plan. How impressive is it? You know Jett Lawrence is being pulled in a million directions with plenty of offers, but something about the Catanzaro program made him feel this one was worth his time and effort. Jett has teamed with AJ, and their MotoAcademy.com app will allow them to watch your videos and analyze your style. It's a way to help retain all the new riders the sport has gained through the pandemic. Catanzaro thinks it will be a game changer. Jason Weigandt chats with The Cat in this episode of the Racer X Exhaust Podcast, learning how he started the business, how he makes money, and how he thinks this app will change the game for him and for others. And with those lessons, Catanzaro believes more privateers can learn new ways to make a living—it just takes hard work and outside-the-box thinking. Exhaust #166: Winning and Retiring (w/ Becca Sheets)

The off-season allows Jason Weigandt to find the good stories you haven't heard, including Becca Sheets' rise to the top of the Grand National Cross Country Series' WXC division. Raised as a motocross racer, Sheets' eventual move to the woods resulted in three titles, including a hard-fought 2021 battle with fellow Yamaha rider Rachel Archer. Sheets held on despite brutal conditions at the Yamaha Ironman GNCC finale. Her bike even drowned out during the race, but she wrung out the air filter, got it running, and earned enough points to defend her crown. Now she will step away from the stresses of racing, announcing this season will be her last. Her story from motocross to the ISDE and GNCC is a good one. Weigandt also checks in with up-and-coming GNCC ATV racer Hunter Hart, who earned second in this year's standings to GNCC National Champion Walker Fowler. Hart explains how ATV riders find their own sponsors and deals to earn a living as racers. He even got a discount card from Outback Steakhouse! Exhaust #163: Anatomy of Rivalry with Bauman and Mees

Things happen when you're fighting for a championship. Jared Mees was once the top man in Progressive American Flat Track and Briar Bauman was just a young gun with big dreams. Bauman trained and worked with Mees, learned, and eventually became the new series champion. Bauman has won the last two titles and looked strong for a third, but Mees never gave up, even after a knee injury earlier this season. A late surge by Mees on his favored mile-long tracks has vaulted him to a slim points lead heading into this Friday's season finale at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The points are close enough to where whoever wins the race wins the title. Of course, such tight competition means Bauman and Mees are no longer friends like they used to be—it's just part of human nature. Jason Weigandt chats with both in this podcast, and you'll learn how rivalries develop and how they can actually heal back up once the showdowns are complete. Bauman has always wanted to maintain his social, outgoing demeanor, but it's getting harder with the pressure to be champion. Mees, meanwhile, has been in this exact position before, and he knows things can go full circle in more ways than just on a flat track. Exhaust #160: Podcast Italiano (w/ Tony Cairoli)

Jason Weigandt took a tour of Italy, but not the Olive Garden kind, when KTM sent him to Rome to cover Tony Cairoli's retirement announcement. It was a grand event, held far from a racetrack in the center of the one of the most historic cities in the world. Why such a big deal? Cairoli deserves it, and KTM wants to keep its alumni riders happy into retirement. Weigandt dives into some of the stories surrounding Cairoli's future and then chats with the legendary nine-time World Champion, as well as MXGP journalists Adam Wheeler and Lewis Phillips. Then some perspective from walking around the city! The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura, Cardo Systems, and On X Maps.

Special Episode: When We Were Kings (w/ We Went Fast)

Forty years ago, a quartet of young Americans traveled to Europe and turned the World Motocross community on its head. Danny LaPorte, Chuck Sun, Donnie Hansen, and Johnny O’Mara won the Trophée des Nations (250) on September 6, 1981 in Lommel, Belgium, and then the Motocross des Nations (500) a week later in West Germany. This is a special collaboration between Racer X Illustrated and We Went Fast. “When We Were Kings” ran in the September/October 1998 issue of Racer X magazine—yes, 1998, when Racer X was in its first year as a full-color glossy and only printing six times a year. “When We Were Kings” is the story behind how the team was formed and how they pulled off the most stunning upset in motocross history. Here’s a brief synopsis if you’re not already familiar: In 1981, for the third year in a row, the AMA wasn’t even going to send a team. Then a magazine editor named Dick Miller stepped in to take over the organizing efforts and whipped up interest. The man literally held bake sale–style events to raise money. Winning one of the events would have been massive. Winning both was shocking. Be sure leave a review and rating and share this show with a friend.

Exhaust #153: The Window (with Ryan Dungey)

In just a short time, Ryan Dungey hit both sides. He was once the young buck trying to battle dominators like Chad Reed and James Stewart. A few years later, he was trying to hold off the likes of Ken Roczen and Eli Tomac. The window is short, and Dungey looked through it from both sides. He talks to Jason Weigandt about that in this podcast, and they also discuss the transition from supercross to motocross. Ryan clinched the Monster Energy Supercross 450SX title unexpectedly as a rookie in 2010, and the emotional stress created by that led to one of the worst races of his career at the 2010 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross opener at Hangtown. Exhaust# 152: Sustaining the Boom (w/ Christy LaCurelle)

We got a gift. The global pandemic of 2020 was terrible on many levels but led to a boom for outdoor activities, including, especially, the dirt bike industry. Even better, much of the gains are with new riders. How can industry sustain this growth and keep people on bikes for generations? Luckily, the United States Motorcycle Coaching Association has built a process to make the sport safer and smarter for new riders. Just in time for this surge in popularity, the USMCA is ready to help new (and returning) riders. But why is coaching so important? Just look around! Nearly every other sport, from stick and ball to skiing, offers easy access to coaching and lessons. When a sport is no longer limited to what Mom and Dad already know, good things happen. Jason Weigandt talks to Christy LaCurelle of the USMCA to learn why good coaching leads to better beginnings for riders, and why the USMCA is a vital part of the future of the sport. Just like coaching is with every other sport out there! The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura, MX-Tech, and JustLive.com.

Zach also talks about Cooper Webb’s ability to ramp it up late in the races and his feelings about ClubMX’s growth. Zach bought the original piece of land that started the place, but this was his first time back on the property in seven years. During that time, Zach and his old track have come a long way. Topics include Reed growing up as a McGrath fan, only to take him out at the Bercy Supercross, and Reed having Carmichael posters in his room growing up, only to battle him for wins and titles. McGrath describes taking a young Carmichael under his wing in California, then later trying to hold him off for supremacy. Deegan describes battling Travis Pastrana at the X Games and the reaction to the double backflip, and Brayton describes turning pro and getting lapped by Carmichael! Exhaust #138: The Bonus Program (with Shane McElrath)

Shane McElrath took a huge risk by leaving his old Troy Lee Designs KTM squad for Monster Energy/Star Racing Yamaha. It was 250SX Championship or bust in 2020, and, well, it must have been bust, because he finished second. But was it? Shane says he's happy to have taken a risk and learned lessons even in defeat, even though he pointed out of the 250 class and found himself without a factory 450 ride. He felt even better after he tried the SmarTop/Bullfrog Spas/MotoConcepts Honda, a bike so good that he said he really couldn't walk away from it, even if it meant signing a supercross-only contract. McElrath also hits on his own place in the sport: never the overwhelming favorite, but always a contender to win races and land on the podium. Where does he fit in? It's a question even he has wrestled with. In this podcast, Shane talks to Jason Weigandt to reveal the journey to his new ride, how the bonus-heavy structure will work, and his own position in the sport. Exhaust #137: Returning Star (with Jeremy Martin)

If not the biggest news of the off-season, it's at least the most surprising: Jeremy Martin has returned to Monster Energy/Star Racing Yamaha, the team he rode for from 2012 to 2016. The previous ending of that relationship was not good, but Jeremy needed a new home after GEICO Honda closed, and he knows the Star YZ250F is a great bike. Exhaust #136: The Hunter Lawrence Interview (with Hunter Lawrence)

This story is far too familiar for Hunter Lawrence: he's once again mending from an injury, this time a shoulder dislocation dating back to the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross opener. There's some good news, though, as Hunter and his brother Jett have factory Honda HRC 250 rides for 2021. Hunter feels he has plenty of time to make the gate for the Monster Energy 250SX West opener on February 20 in Glendale, and he's eager to finally put the injuries behind him and rack up some results. Jason Weigandt rings up the funny Australian for the latest on his 2021 deal. The Racer X Exhaust Podcast is presented by Yoshimura.

Exhaust #135: The Jett Lawrence Interview (with Jett Lawrence)

Even when word got out that the GEICO Honda team might have to close up shop, everyone knew Honda would find a place for Jett Lawrence. The 17-year-old Australian is the hottest prospect in the sport after a rookie pro season that saw him nearly win his third supercross race, then cap the year with a Lucas Oil Pro Motocross overall win at Fox Raceway. Plus, his off-track persona gives him popularity beyond his results. This week, Jett's Honda HRC factory 250F ride was announced as official, as was his new deal with Red Bull, which led to a cool video where he rides a half-width supercross track. Jason Weigandt rang up Jettson for a conversation about his new ride, his 2020 season, and the strange small-world story of training with Ken Roczen's dad back in the day. The retired side of Ryan Villopoto is much different than his public persona in his racing days, and the fans love it. Jason Weigandt called Villopoto this morning to talk pit-bike racing, the friends who help him find these events to do, and then just generally chat with one of the most unfiltered voices in the sport today. Exhaust #133: Privateer Life Ain't Bad (with Alex Ray)

Alex Ray's pathway through the sport is beyond unorthodox, as he went from not even a top-ten B rider from Tennessee to getting dropped off in California to learn supercross. Next thing you know he has a pro license and is going through the whoops with his eyes closed! Today, A-Ray is a consistent 450SX main-eventer and one of the funniest riders in the pits, riding for the SGB Maxxis Babbitt's Kawasaki team. Through A-Ray you'll learn one of the most underappreciated parts of this sport: privateers might not make the big bucks, but they have more fun at the races than anyone. Alex chats with Jason Weigandt and explains his remarkable rise (with huge help from Davi Millsaps, for example) in this podcast. The Racer X Exhaust Podcast is presented by Yoshimura.

With so many private teams struggling, many wondered if Forrest Butler’s Rocky Mountain ATV/MC-WPS-KTM team would survive the year. Indeed, the team remains, with Joey Savatgy replacing Blake Baggett for 2021. Weigandt talks to Butler and Savatgy about the year that was and the year that's upcoming. Exhaust #130: The Cianciarulo Season

Adam Cianciarulo is always a thoughtful and articulate interview, but he's finally bringing those popular skills to the center as a genuine title contender in the 450 Class. His rookie big-bike season included a second-half flurry that put the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship in reach, but, win or lose, he was just happy to avoid the many hazards are hurdles of the premier class and make gains throughout the year. In this podcast, culled from several interviews with Jason Weigandt and Cianciarulo over the final rounds of the season, you'll hear Adam's take on learning and growing, rediscovering the addiction to winning without getting too frustrated if he loses, as well as ancillary thoughts on why 250 riders don't win as soon as they turn pro anymore, and other topics. As a student of the game, Adam knows the sport well. Here's his take on racing in 2020. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura.

Exhaust #129: Dylan Ferrandis

Dylan Ferrandis is actually one of the most open and honest riders on the AMA circuit, but many fans don't know that because it's hard to understand him! Jason Weigandt helps articulate the points that Ferrandis makes in this interview, adding his interpretation to sound bites after an interview with the current 250 Class series leader. Ferrandis explains his approach to the final races, bike changes that helped with his starts but slowed him on the track, and how he was actually mad at himself for that Christian Craig incident earlier in the season. Also, he explains that winning last year's Monster Energy Supercross Championship in 250SX West might have made him too complacent when Lucas Oil Pro Motocross began for 2019, which he now considers the greatest lesson of his racing career—and a mistake he won't make again. Plus: while racing over the weekend at WW Ranch, he had visions of trying to battle Jeffrey Herlings, which Ferrandis had to do in his MX2 days in the GPs. Ferrandis explains much about the emotions of racing at the top level. It's worth understanding! The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura.

Exhaust #128: Digging Out (w/ Savatgy, Cooper & Shimoda)

Joey Savatgy has run up front before: "I just look at the guys that are up there now, and I've beat those guys before. I might not beat them every time, but I've run with them and won races and lost races. I don't think it's impossible." The struggle is real in his comeback from injury—and a team and bike switch—and he gives a sobering but honest update on his progress. Also, Justin Cooper talks about his struggles this year finding his old podium form, and rookie Jo Shimoda explains how he has to set realistic goals in a field of 250 veterans. When he got run into by a Rockstar Energy Husqvarna, those were his thoughts—until he found out it was actually Zach Osborne running into him, to which Adam said, “I saw the 16, and we’ve run into each other so many times, I almost just laugh it off at this point. I didn’t have the pace he had, so I did my best not to be too emotional and get crazy mad try to do something stupid.” It was an enjoyable Monday-night Zoom press conference after a wild round two of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross. Exhaust #122: The Birth and Rebirth of MX SportsCenter

In 2005, there was no chance this would work. No cell-phone signal will ever reach Loretta Lynn Ranch, high-speed internet and YouTube essentially didn’t exist—and yet there was an idea to create a daily video highlight show from the AMA Amateur Nationals. A 19-year-old video kid named Wes Williams lied and said he could pull it off, which led to all-nighters for him and hosts Jason Weigandt and Kevin Kelly. Now, 15 years later, they hook up to talk about that first year, how MX SportsCenter led to Vurb Moto and the creation of the motocross video world we know today, and reviving the shows for 2020. Malcolm Stewart is a lovable character in the pits, but that likability has shrouded his competitiveness. Malcolm quietly put together a strong 2020 season in Monster Energy Supercross, taking seventh in points and ending the year with a series of top-five results and a heat win. But his Bullfrog Spas/SmarTop/MotoConcepts Honda team doesn't race in the summer. What's he do now? Would he race outdoors if he could? Malcolm is looking for the next level, and he reveals much to Jason Weigandt in this podcast. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura.

Zach Osborne has been a dog on a leash—he loves to race everything, and especially off-road—but the focus on motocross and supercross has kept him away. Now things have taken a strange turn. Zach’s the winner of the final round of Monster Energy Supercross for 2020, but with Lucas Oil Pro Motocross on pause, he’s going to race Grand National Cross Country instead. Exhaust #119: The Nationals (with Davey Coombs)

Lucas Oil Pro Motocross is again on hold, with the planned-for July 18 start to the season now pushed into August. A global pandemic might be the most complex problem ever to work around, but we all want to go racing, so this announcement certainly hasn't made fans happy. Jason Weigandt rang up Davey Coombs, who—full disclosure, is his boss at Racer X and also is part of the family that runs the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship—to learn more details as to why the nationals had to delay again. The takeaway? There are a few major reasons: teams have begun to express fears over travel from state to state at the moment; watching COVID rates rise has made predicting the future decisions of multiple state governments very difficult; and the races need fans to operate, because the economic model for Pro Motocross is much different than that of Monster Energy Supercross (it's more similar to many other smaller racing series that can't operate without fans). Also, the series does not want to start until it knows it can put together an entire series. Racing once and then stopping and waiting is not the plan that MX Sports want to use. Hopefully they can string together more races in a row by pushing back, and then an actual championship schedule can grow clear. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura.

Exhaust #118: Shane's Side (w/ Shane McElrath)

Shane McElrath came into the final round of Monster Energy Supercross needing to win the race and hoping Chase Sexton would finish off the podium—that's what it would take for him to win the 2020 250SX East Region Championship. He tried quite a few things at the Utah finale to help his odds, and the Monster Energy/Star Racing Yamaha rider addresses them in this interview with Jason Weigandt. From the starting-gate picks to mid-race slowdowns to the post-race protest of Sexton's fuel, McElrath takes it all on here—and says he has no regrets. When the dust (somewhat literally) settled on Sunday's Monster Energy Supercross finale in Salt Lake City, Monster Energy Kawasaki's Eli Tomac, GEICO Honda's Chase Sexton, and Monster Energy/Star Racing Yamaha's Dylan Ferrandis were holding #1 plates. It wasn't an easy road, and Sexton and Ferrandis had to silence some detractors—and Tomac had to erase the demons of past 450SX seasons. After the race, Tomac and Ferrandis met with the media to answer questions. Sexton was scheduled to arrive but apparently was too busy celebrating! NBC Sports' Daniel Blair hosted the press conference, but Racer X's Jason Weigandt, Mitch Kendra, and Aaron Hansel were in attendance. The Racer X Exhaust Podcast is presented by Yoshimura.

Exhaust #100: How to Go Racing Again (with Tim Cotter and Roy Janson)

Now nearly two months into this shutdown of racing—and nearly everything else—patience is wearing thin. The Race Leadership Team, which consists of the organizers of Pro Motocross, GNCC, Loretta Lynn's MX, and ATVMX, has been keeping the industry updated on race dates since March, but there's a next step: how can they get racetracks and series open again? Exhaust #95: The Consummate Racer and the Shutdown (with Jared Mees)

Both a championship racer and promoter of one of the top events on the American Flat Track calendar, Indian Motorcycle's Jared Mees is one of the best riders to talk to during the shutdown. He's one of the most analytical and hardworking riders in any paddock, so how does he cope? Jason Weigandt digs in, learning Mees' take on the current state as both a racer and a promoter, and also even more about his own personality. "My own family knows, me on race day, don't even bother him," he says. "It's bad. I don't want people to take this the wrong way, but at the races I'm like, 'Man, I don't have time for anybody. I'm here to win, to put points on the board, and to represent my sponsors.' I work too hard during the week and too hard at the races, and there's nobody standing in my way to mess my focus up. Dude, I don't care if I lose friends at the racetrack! I don't care! It's about winning." The Racer X Exhaust Podcast is presented by Yoshimura.

Exhaust #92: Gamers' Delight

We know. If Racer X went heavy on video games a month ago, a lot of fans would wonder what the heck was going on. But with real racing shut down for at least a few months, virtual versions of the real thing have become the only thing. NASCAR and Fox Sports have gone heavy, announcing Sundays will be filled with real drivers racing on TV but using video game simulations. Can that work in supercross and motocross? Not quite, but we can try to work the edges. In this edition of the Racer X Exhaust Podcast, Jason Weigandt and our online content editor, Kellen Brauer—perhaps the world's foremost expert in motocross gaming—discuss the evolution of dirt bikes in the virtual and digital world. What are today's games like? How close are they to the real thing? Will serious gamers ever get the 2.0 versions of their favorite old games? These topics are now more important than ever! The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura.
