Abortion: Mission Impossible

The media may have you believe that the recent Supreme Court decision on Mifepristone was a win for reproductive rights. In reality, it merely upheld the current status quo – a drastic departure from the standard once set by Roe. And an onslaught of challenges, aimed at making abortion impossible, if not illegal, are on the horizon. Joining us to explore this regression we have Melissa Murray, NYU Law Professor and co-host of the Strict Scrutiny Podcast, and Jessica Valenti, founder of AbortionEveryDay.com and author of the forthcoming book, Abortion: Our Bodies, Their Lies, and the Truths We Use to Win. Together, they discuss how our distorted democracy brought us to this moment, unpack the backward slide of abortion rights in America, and offer tips on what we can do to counter this trend.  Follow The Weekly Show with Jon Stewart on social media for more:    > YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@weeklyshowpodcast > Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/weeklyshowpodcast > TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@weeklyshowpodcast  > X: https://x.com/weeklyshowpod Host/Executive Producer – Jon Stewart Executive Producer – James Dixon Executive Producer – Chris McShane Executive Producer – Caity Gray Lead Producer – Lauren Walker Producer – Brittany Mehmedovic Video Editor & Engineer – Rob Vitolo Audio Editor & Engineer – Nicole Boyce Researcher – Catherine Nouhan Music by Hansdle Hsu — This podcast is brought to you by: ZipRecruiter Try it for free at this exclusive web address: ziprecruiter.com/ZipWeekly   NetSuite For more info, head to netsuite.com/Weekly --- Learn more about your ad choices. The Military Industrial Complexity

On the 80th anniversary of D-Day, we reflect on how the US military saved democracy from fascism. This week, as the Senate marks up next year’s defense spending bill, Jon sits down with Bill Hartung of the Quincy Institute and Roxana Tiron of Bloomberg to investigate whether our arsenal is still bolstering democracy, both abroad and at home. From the active conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza to our rivalry with China, we explore the efficacy of U.S. strategy. Plus, we dive deep into the ballooning defense budget and discuss Jon’s attempts to shine a light on it all.  And you can also check out the tax tool shared with us by a resourceful listener here: https://us.abalancingact.com/2023-federal-taxpayer-receipt Follow The Weekly Show with Jon Stewart on social media for more:    > YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@weeklyshowpodcast > Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/weeklyshowpodcast > TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@weeklyshowpodcast  > X: https://x.com/weeklyshowpod CREDITS Host/Executive Producer – Jon Stewart Executive Producer - James Dixon Executive Producer – Chris McShane Executive Producer – Caity Gray Lead Producer – Lauren Walker Producer – Brittany Mehmedovic Video Editor & Engineer - Rob Vitolo Audio Editor& Engineer Nicole Boyce Researcher - Catherine Nouhan Music by Hansdle Hsu — This podcast is brought to you by: ZipRecruiter Try it for free at this exclusive web address: ziprecruiter.com/ZipWeekly   NetSuite For more info, head to netsuite.com/Weekly Learn more about your ad choices. Democracy Under Threat: The Soft Hum of Corruption

Despite what cable news may have you believe, Donald Trump is not the sole threat to our democracy. This week, we’re peeling back the rhetoric and taking a look at where the vulnerabilities in our institutions lie. In conversation with Jane Mayer, Chief Washington Correspondent for The New Yorker magazine and Noah Bookbinder, President of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, Jon explores the roots of our democratic dysfunction. From ever-multiplying dark money to shark tanking ideas for tax transparency, this episode has it all. Plus, hear from producers of the pod and get a taste for what you can expect in episodes to come! Fact Check: Jane Mayer mentions that Jon said the FEC is about as useless as male nipples. It was, in fact, Jordan Klepper who said this.  Follow The Weekly Show with Jon Stewart on social media for more:    > YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@weeklyshowpodcast > Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/weeklyshowpodcast > TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@weeklyshowpodcast  > X: https://x.com/weeklyshowpod Host/Executive Producer – Jon Stewart Executive Producer - James Dixon Executive Producer – Chris McShane Executive Producer – Caity Gray Lead Producer – Lauren Walker Producer – Brittany Mehmedovic Video/Audio Editor & Engineer - Rob Vitolo Researcher - Catherine Nouhan Music by Hansdale Hsu

Rethinking Crime and Punishment With San Francisco’s Mayor

San Francisco has become a go-to example for the narrative that cities are overrun with rampant crime and people experiencing homelessness. But the reality is far more complicated. On this week’s podcast, San Francisco Mayor London Breed joins us to talk about her approach to making the city safer for everyone, the need for compassionate alternatives to policing, and what we could actually do to break the cycles of entrenched poverty and incarceration. Also, writers Kris Acimovic and Jay Jurden stop by to discuss the suspense of the never-ending Trump Indictment Watch. Season 2 is now streaming on Apple TV+.If you or someone you know needs support, go to apple.com/heretohelp for resources.CREDITSHosted by: Jon Stewart Featuring, in order of appearance: Kris Acimovic, Jay Jurden, London Breed Executive Produced by Jon Stewart, Brinda Adhikari, James Dixon, Chris McShane, and Richard Plepler.Lead Producer: Sophie EricksonProducers: Zach Goldbaum, Caity Gray Assoc. Liar, Liar, Network on Fire: The Legal Case Against Fox News

Thanks to the Dominion Voting Systems v. Fox News filing, we now know what we’ve always believed is true: Fox News will do or say anything to retain their power, even if it means lying—over and over and over again—to their viewers. The question is: Will they finally be held accountable this time? We’re joined by RonNell Andersen Jones, professor of law at the University of Utah, for a lively discussion about defamation law (really!) and the possibility that Fox News might actually have to face the music. Writers Jay Jurden and Robby Slowik are also here to talk about the larger media implications of this case and what it has in common with The White Lotus.Season 2 is now streaming on Apple TV+.CREDITS

The Ohio Train Disaster: A Tale of Corporate Greed and Civil War-Era Brakes

A freight train derailed in Ohio and released a mushroom cloud of toxic chemicals—so why has the media buried this story? This week, we’re breaking down the shocking but predictable conditions that led to this accident, how rail companies have chosen profits over safety, and what regulatory changes should be made to avoid a mess like this again. Our guests are Julia Rock, reporter at The Lever; Matt Weaver, Ohio legislative director for BMWED-IBT and member of the Railroad Workers United ISC; and Julie Grant, managing editor and senior reporter for The Allegheny Front. We’re also joined by writers Alexa Lofus and Henrik Blix, who share their thoughts on alien encounters and America’s new policy of shooting random things out of the sky.Season 2 is now streaming on Apple TV+.CREDITSHosted by: Jon StewartFeaturing, in order of appearance: Alexa Loftus, Henrik Blix, Matt Weaver, Julia Rock, and Julie GrantExecutive Produced by Jon Stewart, Brinda Adhikari, James Dixon, Chris McShane, and Richard Plepler. Lead Producer: Sophie EricksonProducers: Zach Goldbaum, Caity GrayAssoc. U.S.-China Tensions: Threat Inflation and Balloon Deflation

When a Chinese spy balloon was spotted above the U.S. last week, Americans reacted the only way they know how—by shooting it out of the sky with a missile. But why do we keep insisting that China is our sworn enemy? We’re talking with Jessica Chen Weiss, the Michael J. Zak Professor for China and Asia-Pacific Studies at Cornell and Senior Fellow at the Asia Society Policy Institute’s Center for China Analysis, and John Glaser, adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute and host of Cato’s Power Problems podcast. We discuss America’s reflexive urge to escalate even the smallest threat, why our geopolitical position is actually way more secure than we’re led to believe, and whether we might figure out a way to share the world stage with China. Writers Tocarra Mallard and Robby Slowik also join us to talk about why the State of the Union is always so overdramatic. Season 2 is now streaming on Apple TV+.CREDITS

Excessive Use of Force: Diagnosing Our Over-Policing Problem

The media may have moved on from its wall-to-wall coverage of the killing of Tyre Nichols, but the nation is still hurting. This week, we’re discussing how incorrectly diagnosing the problem of police brutality has led to a system that hurts everyone. We’re joined by Heather McGhee, author and chair of the racial justice organization Color of Change, and Phillip Atiba Goff, Ph.D. Chair and Carl I. Hovland Professor of African American Studies and Professor of Psychology at Yale University. Dr. Goff is also the cofounder and CEO at Center For Policing Equity. They share their thoughts on why armed cops shouldn’t be doing minor traffic stops, how the system changes a cop from the inside out, and how investing in human infrastructure is our best solution to the ongoing problem of police brutality. Also, writers Rob Christensen and Kasaun Wilson weigh in on the sensationalization of the body cam footage and their own run-ins with the law. Season 2 is now streaming on Apple TV+. CREDITS

The Problem Isn’t Biden or Trump. It’s How America Keeps Secrets.

The media is chasing the classified documents fiasco like it’s spy vs. spy, Trump vs. Biden. But on this week’s episode, we’re breaking down the absurdity of a national security system that makes it so darn easy to hoard classified documents. We’re joined by Matthew Connelly, professor of history at Columbia and author of The Declassification Engine: What History Reveals About America’s Top Secrets. He gives us the inside scoop on how unwieldy our system for keeping state secrets has become, who it’s really designed to protect, and how we might revamp it so that it can actually, you know, keep a secret. Plus, writers Jay Jurden and Robby Slowik run through the documents the FBI found at Pence’s house—and why they’re going to make Mother very angry. Season 2 is now streaming on Apple TV+.CREDITS

The Far Right Is Going Global: Anne Applebaum on the Decline of Democracy

Brazil’s insurrection is just the latest in a series of attacks on democracy around the world. So we’re talking to Anne Applebaum, a staff writer at The Atlantic and author of the book Twilight of Democracy, about why autocracy is making a comeback and how to stop it. We dive into democracy’s roots as an unstable form of government, the role of global elites on both sides, and why fascism is really just a money-laundering scheme. Plus, writers Henrik Blix and Maria Randazzo weigh in on George Santos’ litany of stupid lies and why you can always tell a future dictator by the absurdity of his facial hair. Season 2 is now streaming on Apple TV+.CREDITS

Poland (director of Mayo Clinic’s Vaccine Research Group), Dr. Saad Omer (director of the Yale Institute for Global Health), and Zeynep Tufekci (professor at Columbia University), who bring something that’s often lacking from these conversations: nuance. We talk through why many non-crazy people are hesitant to get vaccinated, how our public health institutions have failed to communicate effectively with the masses, and why it should be perfectly okay to ask questions about the risks and benefits of any vaccine. Why the FTX Crypto Scam Is a Tale As Old As Time

“Whatever fun name you wanna put on it, it’s the same damn thing we’ve seen over and over again.” David Dayen, executive editor of The American Prospect, joins us to discuss the spectacular rise and fall of crypto exchange FTX and its disgraced leader, Sam Bankman-Fried. We dive into the ways its collapse mirrors the worst failures of more mainstream markets, how SBF was able to use effective altruism as cover for garden-variety political influence, and why it’s a mess that the House Agriculture Committee ended up regulating exchanges like FTX. Rep. Katie Porter Can Explain Anything: Inflation, GO!

This week we’re talking to Rep. Katie Porter, the Democratic congresswoman from California’s 47th district, who wields her whiteboard like a weapon. She explains (in plain English!) what we’ve got wrong about inflation and why Congress isn’t jumping at the chance to fix it. She updates us on the midterm elections, breaks down the hypocrisy of Republican rhetoric on crime, and blows our minds about why political ads never show members of Congress doing actual work. Plus, we’ve got writers Jay Jurden and Alexa Loftus here talking about Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover. The Fumes of an Empire: UK Chaos and the U.S. Midterms

The midterms are two weeks out and chaos just keeps building. The UK is cycling through prime ministers faster than James Bonds as their economic crisis continues. Meanwhile, election deniers in the U.S. are whipping themselves into a frenzy. Jon is joined by British journalist Gabriel Gatehouse to break down what’s happening in the UK, plus what his QAnon and election-conspiracy reporting might tell us about our democracy’s post-election fate—if this election ever ends. Writers Tocarra Mallard and Robby Slowik are also here talking Ye and Adidas, antisemitism, and the conspiracy earworms that have infected us all.Stream our newest episode, “Midterms: This Is What Democracy Looks Like?,” starting October 28 on Apple TV+.CREDITSHosted by: Jon StewartFeaturing, in order of appearance: Robby Slowik, Tocarra Mallard, Gabriel GatehouseExecutive Produced by Jon Stewart, Brinda Adhikari, James Dixon, Chris McShane, and Richard Plepler. Lead Producer: Sophie EricksonProducers: Zach Goldbaum, Caity GrayAssoc. Why Does Fighting Inflation Have to Hurt So Much?

Jon is joined by Steve Hanke, a professor of applied economics at Johns Hopkins University, for a chat about why we find ourselves in this current inflation disaster and how we might get out of it. They get into whether the Fed is blowing it, the role of money supply, and whether anyone is looking out for the little guy in all of this monetary maneuvering. They don’t always agree, but Jon manages to score a passing grade from the professor! SEC Chair Gary Gensler Answers Your Questions

SEC Chair Gary Gensler is back! Jon throws him some of the thousands of audience questions we got, and they dive into the issue of whether the SEC is doing enough to ensure market transparency, why there’s not more accountability for the market’s biggest players, and what the limits on SEC power mean in a practical sense. Plus, we set a record for most acronyms in a single episode–PFOF, DRS, PSA, UBS! You name it, we got it. Below are definitions for some of the terminology used in this episode. Our website has a more in-depth explanation, and you can watch Jon’s first interview with Gary Gensler on our Apple TV+ “Stock Market” episode. http://apple.co/JonStewartEpisode5theproblem.link/StocksEpisodeDisgorgement: An SEC penalty that compels the return of any “ill-gotten gains,” meaning they were made in violation of U.S. securities laws.Dark pools: Private exchanges for trading securities that are not accessible by the investing public. And, yes, they are actually called dark pools. Market makers: Also known as “wholesalers,” these are firms who help investors buy and sell securities using the pool of shares they own. They’re basically a middleman with access to highly important information, who is seeing the game one thousand times faster than you. Payment for order flow (PFOF): When brokerages route the buy and sell orders of retail investors to big market makers instead of sending it directly to the stock market. This deal helps brokerages make hundreds of millions of dollars every year. Short-selling: Short-selling is when an investor borrows securities (usually from a broker who either has the security in their inventory or is also borrowing the security from elsewhere) and sells it on the open market with the plan to buy the security back later at a lower price. After buying back the shares, the investor returns the borrowed shares (plus interest) to the original broker and profits off of the difference. The Securities and Exchange Commission: Commonly known as the SEC, this is the government agency that oversees securities exchanges, brokers, investment advisors, and mutual funds. They’re in charge of creating fair dealings, ensuring the disclosure of important market information, and preventing fraud. CREDITSHosted by: Jon Stewart Featuring, in order of appearance: Gary Gensler Executive Produced by Jon Stewart, Brinda Adhikari, James Dixon, Chris McShane, and Richard Plepler.Lead Producer: Sophie EricksonProducers: Zach Goldbaum, Caity Gray Assoc. Rep. Elissa Slotkin on Governing in an Era of Extremes

Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI-08) joins Jon to describe the frustrating circumstances that led to her fiery speech on the House floor last week, when several Republicans tried blocking a bill for veterans before ultimately voting for it. Later, they explore why being from a competitive district like hers is different than a safe district—and the governing challenges of working with an opposing party that won’t compromise. Staff writers Jay Jurden and Kasaun Wilson are also here to break down Herschel Walker’s abortion scandal and explain why none of his hypocrisies have derailed his campaign so far.CREDITSHosted by: Jon StewartFeaturing, in order of appearance: Jay Jurden, Kasaun Wilson, Elissa SlotkinExecutive Produced by Jon Stewart, Brinda Adhikari, James Dixon, Chris McShane, and Richard Plepler. Lead Producer: Sophie EricksonProducers: Zach Goldbaum, Caity Gray, and Robby SlowikAssoc. The #MahsaAmini Protest and Iran’s Fight for Freedom

This week we’re talking about the #MahsaAmini protests in Iran with Rana Rahimpour, an Iranian-British journalist with BBC Persian. Jon is also joined by staff writer Alexa Loftus and our Iranian supervising producer Reza Riazi. It’s a fascinating discussion about why this uprising is different from anything that’s come before, what comes next for the people of Iran, and what the U.S. can do to help. (The bad news is it involves Elon Musk.) They dig into how Bill Barr tried to have Berman fired, why nailing down powerful guys like Trump is so hard, and whether better guardrails could protect our democracy. Jon Talks Climate Change: It Gets Heated

We don’t want to send the message that criticizing us on Twitter is a ticket to the podcast...but that’s what climate reporter Kendra Pierre-Louis did, and now here she is. Jon Talks Stocks and Ukraine

We’re back on Apple TV+ with brand-new episode “The Problem With Stocks,” and we’re celebrating on the podcast the only way we know how—by interviewing former SEC commissioner Rob Jackson. (We’re bad at celebrating.) We get his thoughts on why the market isn’t held accountable and is less regulated than casinos. Robby Slowik and Rob Christensen join Jon to give their thoughts on the Russian invasion of Ukraine and how Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy went from comedian to courageous leader. Not to mention their recommendations for the cleanest restrooms in New York City.Words in this episode you may not know but should know:Arbitrage is exploiting a price difference of the same asset. It’s like buying avocados at the supermarket for $1 each and selling them at the hipster farmers market for double.Dark pools are private exchanges for trading securities that are not accessible by the investing public.Options trading is buying and selling of options, which are essentially contracts that give you the right to buy or sell a stock at a certain price by a certain date. It’s basically betting on a stock price going up or down. So if you purchase an option instead of buying a stock, it means that you are buying the option to buy a stock if it hits a certain price. This can lead to issues, because if your bet fails, you’ve lost all that you’ve invested. Whereas if you bought actual stocks, regardless of the price, you still own that asset.Payment for order flow (PFOF) is when brokerages such as Robinhood route the buy and sell orders of retail investors to big market makers such as Citadel and Virtu instead of sending it directly to the stock market. This deal helps brokerages make hundreds of millions of dollars every year.Retail investors are individual, nonprofessional investors who are buying assets with their own money.Securities are any tradable financial asset: stock share (equities), bonds, investment funds, pensions, etc.The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) oversees securities exchanges, brokers, investment advisors, and mutual funds to create fair dealings, disclose important market information, and prevent fraud.Bildungsroman isn’t relevant to our episode, but do you remember that from English class? When economist and Fed exec Thomas Hoenig told Jon on this podcast that printing money was a bad idea, economists Stephanie Kelton and Rohan Grey took to the internet to start an Economist Battle (it’s more fun than it sounds). Now they’re here to tell Jon about a new approach to economics called Modern Monetary Theory, and why printing money maybe isn’t so bad after all. But first, Jon discusses trespassing bears and the current situation in Ukraine with staff members Tocarra Mallard, Alexa Loftus, and Deniz Cam.CREDITSHosted by: Jon StewartFeaturing, in order of appearance: Alexa Loftus Tocarra Mallard, Deniz Cam, Stephanie Kelton, Rohan Grey, Rob ChristensenExecutive Produced by Jon Stewart, Brinda Adhikari, James Dixon, Chris McShane, and Richard Plepler.Lead Producer: Sophie EricksonProducers: Caity Gray, Robby SlowikAssoc.
