132: Leveraging Athlete Brain to Live a High-Performing Lifestyle

“Athlete Brain” is a term I coined around 9 years ago that describes that inner-drive to do more, push harder. It’s a great trait to have. It’s better when we leverage it to work for us, not against us. Athlete brain is what drives us in sports and fitness, but it can be utilized and applied to any aspect of our lives. It most recently has be applicable to me as I’ve trained hard for BJJ Worlds, undergoing a weight cut and vigorous training schedule. But it also has applied to my business, mom life, and every aspect of my life where I want to be a high performer. As coaches, athletes need people who get them see them - especially those who experience athlete brain during seasons of pregnancy and postpartum. The waitlist is open! 129: Having a Truly Neutral Approach to My Body for the First Time In My Life

The pendulum swing of health and fitness is real - but what if we found the messy middle? I’m currently prepping for Jiu Jitsu Worlds and it has required me to be aware of my data as I need to make my weight class. And, for the first time in my life, I’m neutral about it. I’m not obsessing over the scale or toxic about tracking my macros. It’s freeing and so nice to be in a place where I can be completely neutral about it. This is the first time in my life I have been able to do this. This conversation is an extremely nuanced one and I hope as I continue dripping out content on this topic that it can develop and expand more and more. It’s okay to have your goals or not have goals. It’s okay to want to fuel for performance or be in a season of doing just enough to get by. I get that and I see you. The goal is to find the middle ground where we can be neutral about whatever we choose to do with our bodies. Need flexible yet effective workouts? 128: A Second Chance with Chance

Get ready, because this is going to be an emotional one… The decision to have a second baby seemed like an overwhelming decision after the traumatic and extremely hard experience I had with my first birth and postpartum. But, through time, I felt ready and found what I had control over and was able to turn it into a beautiful, empowering experience.   I dive into what taking control with my second birth looked like by having an elective, gentle cesarean (the first time this happened for my hospital) and how everything was so different the second time around - the birth experience and postpartum was different, Chance was different, and I was a different person.   Every day I am so grateful we took the chance to have Chance - it was truly a second chance in every way.   Pregnant? 127: Well-Rounded Training for When You're Done Having Babies

Today, I have Heather join me as we talk about what our life and fitness is like post-babies and what we think a well-rounded fitness program for women should look like for a lifetime of athleticism. We strongly believe that athleticism does not end when motherhood begins, OR after we’re done having our babies, and especially so as we age. We don’t buy into age being a factor that stops us, but rather an opportunity to continue doing our fitness as long as possible (like my mom, Sharon). The Practice Brave Fitness Program is designed to give you the well-rounded fitness that you want and need for a full, strong life. It’s a program created based on how we live. Maybe you have a background in dance and CrossFit like Heather and are feeling lost as to what to do next - The Practice Brave Fitness program bridges that gap and gives you the sustainable, reliable programming you want and need. We also chat about how cool to have our kids be involved in our fitness and see it be a normal part of life. They get to see us become stronger and work hard - and they need to see us doing it. We are in it for the long game. That means we learn how to start over again and again as life gets lifey. 126: What Your Programming Should Look Like for Pursuing a Lifetime of Athleticism

Recently, I had a complaint about my Pregnant Athlete Training Program that the workouts repeated and that it lacked variation. That’s the point - we test and retest and same basic movements over time to make progress and gain strength. Programming for a lifetime of athleticism isn’t about randomized, all high-intensity workouts. Those can be sprinkled in, but what we’re looking for is supporting your lifestyle, goals, and overall health. Sometimes that can get boring. It’s doing the same stuff over and over (and over) again. Commit to it being a little boring sometimes. Treat your workouts like you’re training for something and you’ll begin to make progress. Pregnant? My training program for pregnancy is here: briannabattles.com/pregnant-athlete Postpartum? My 8-week postpartum athlete training program is here: https://www.briannabattles.com/8weeks     MORE ABOUT THE SHOW: The Practice Brave podcast brings you the relatable, trustworthy and transparent health & fitness information you're looking for when it comes to coaching, being coached and transitioning through the variables of motherhood and womanhood. You will learn from athletes and experts in the women's health and coaching/performance realm as they share their knowledge and experience on all things Pregnancy & Postpartum Athleticism. Whether you're a newly pregnant athlete or postpartum athlete, knowing how to adjust your workouts, mental approach and coaching can be confusing. Each week we'll be tackling questions around adjusting your workouts and mindset, diastasis recti, pelvic health, mental health, identity, and beyond. 122: Strategic Moderation and Having a Sustainable Approach to Nutrition with Kristi Vaccaro

Today I’m joined by Kristi Vaccaro, P&PA Coach and owner of FIT LV Fitness & Nutrition Coaching, chatting about going from obsessive and extreme to balanced and sustainable with our nutrition and overcoming diet culture in the process. We’ve seen the pendulum swing from never track anything and do whatever you want to extreme and meticulous tracking with no wiggle room. Kristi helps to find the strategic middle ground so your nutrition is serving you, not taking away from your life. Kristi has been helping coach me as I’ve entered into the competition space for BJJ (a weight-based sport) and has helped me do it in a healthy, sustainable way, after years of not really needing or wanting to track or weigh. We all have different seasons of tracking more or less, but each have their place in the lifetime of athleticism we’re pursuing. Finding the middle ground is key. 121: My Mom’s Inspiring Story That Will Make You Want to Start Lifting Weights: Athleticism Through Grandmother-hood / Happy 65th Birthday, Sharon!

Happy 65th birthday to my amazing mom, Sharon! She is an inspiration to many and today she shares her story of finding fitness later in life (we’re talking 50s) after overcoming a challenging past of living in survival mode and working all the time to support me and my sister. Lifting weights was not the norm for my mom’s generation and is only now becoming more of a mainstream activity. Sharon proves that athleticism does not have an expiration date and that you can start at any age to get strong and lift heavy. She just went viral for a video of her deadlifting 200lbs for 5… no big deal. We talk about how important and needed it is to be strong through not only motherhood, but grandmotherhood and as we age. She’s living her best life doing CrossFit, biking, hiking, skiing, Pickleball, and more. 120: Competing as a Mom and How Not to be Toxic About it, BJJ Competition Recap, and How to Deal When You Lose with Miranda Granger

I recently competed in a large BJJ competition in Long Beach, CA and I lost. In this episode, I’ve been able to reflect on entering this season of competing, the efforts I made to get there, and how I did it with the least amount of toxicity as possible. Miranda and I get each other on a deep level when it comes to this stuff and she shares her insights and perspectives on her time as a professional MMA fighter. We’ve come to the conclusion that it’s important to find ways to accomplish our goals without being toxic about it and finding the appropriate balance in our lives. And, that your competitive side doesn’t die - even if it isn’t a priority for a season during motherhood. We also discuss what it’s like to lose and how to deal with it. Grateful for the friendship Miranda and I share as she supported me through my competition weekend (and then shared a ton of sushi with me after). 119: How Do I Know When I Am Ready to Compete Again?

In this weeks episode I share about seasons in motherhood, and how to navigate actual readiness to return to competition. I'm on the other side of early motherhood... I don't have toddlers and babies anymore, and my life as an athlete now looks so much different than it did when my kids were younger. I'm in a season where my life, body and brain support competition and higher levels of performance output. I'll be competing next week, and thought this was a good point of reflection and perspective for whatever season you're in! Enjoyed this episode? 118: Athlete Brain vs Athletic Maturity: Navigating Returning To Fitness After A Set Back

Recently, I injured my knee in a freak accident at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and it’s having me reflect on overcoming athlete brain and my development of athletic maturity. Even knowing “all the things”, I still struggle with my version of athlete brain needing to slow down. There are always going to be setbacks that affect our fitness whether it’s injury, big life transitions, pregnancy, postpartum, etc. It’s inevitable. What matters is how we approach the setbacks and how we build back and create a solid foundation for ourselves moving forward. Working within our limitations and knowing that we have options is key. Address symptoms, work with your current threshold, and continually increase your ceiling. There’s always something we can do and we don’t have to completely eliminate activity. Ultimately, things just take time. Enjoyed this episode? 104: How to Make Friends as an Adult

On this week’s episode, I brought on 4 friends I have made since moving to Idaho about a year ago from Southern California. We discuss practical ways we’ve gotten out of our comfort zone and embraced opportunities that would help facilitate friendships. Friendship can be uncomfortable and sensitive for many adults, especially when you’ve experienced grief, change, and distance. We discuss elements of female friendship that we’ve each experienced, and how we are trying to show up now in order to cultivate the relationships we desire. 102: The Lie We Tell Ourselves (and have been told by others) About What Our Bodies Can Do

How often have you been told, or believed that you “can’t do  ____ because of ___,” when it comes to exercise? For example, “I can’t run because of my knees,” or “I can’t deadlift because it hurts my back.” We are often quick to take pain or discomfort with exercise and eliminate it completely. We have created absolutes. While sometimes indicated, oftentimes, there’s an opportunity to adjust mechanics before eliminating the movement altogether. The thing about athleticism is we have OPTIONS, not limitations. Yet, we often see an emphasis on the limitations in the medical, practitioner, and fitness communities. There are many variables we can adjust that provide options to still do the activity, to our own unique capacity. In this episode, I provide examples and shifts to our approach as athletes and coaches to help explore our options when it comes to exercise and unique needs. Join the team! 96: New Research "A Timeline for Returning to Performance Postpartum"

🎉 We have published research in The International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy (IJSPT). Historically, there is not a lot of research on female athletes. The research for pregnancy and postpartum exercise is often shortsighted, to say the least. This “population” of pregnant and postpartum athletes is still considered new. We 👏 are 👏 changing 👏 that. The work we are doing in *real life* is getting reflected in the research, which is a critical step forward, and only the beginning of bringing this to more journals, and stages and continually changing the messaging/info that exists in the medical, practitioner, and fitness industries. Shoutout to my fellow authors: @stirrupstositups @elizabethwendel @drsuzmd Katie Early Misty Seidenberg This is the work my business, @pregnant.postpartum.athlete, pursues and why it’s critical we certify coaches, and provide athletes with updated program design + resources for pregnancy and postpartum. Episode 81: Navigating Exercise and Pregnancy as a CrossFit Athlete with Desiree Poppens

This is probably one of the most special episodes I’ve had, and one that every single pregnant athlete can benefit from listening to. I interviewed my sister, from the hospital while she was in early labor. I swear she was OK with us in order to help pass the time. Her water unexpectedly broke at 37 weeks exactly, surprising us all! We talked about her training through pregnancy, especially because so much of it was shared on my platforms. We discussed the different symptoms she had, what we did about them, and her overall approach to navigating this chapter as a CrossFit athlete and soon to be mom. Her baby was born about 12 hours later.   Enjoyed this episode? Episode 79: POP and Hysterectomies with Dr. Jocelyn Fitzgerald a Urogynecology & Pelvic Reconstructive Surgeon

This is a practical, deeply informative episode with Dr. Fitzgerald on a variety of women’s health symptoms and experiences, specifically pelvic organ prolapse and hysterectomies, which are two very misunderstood and under represented circumstances that many women can experience in the lifetime. I often say I wish more of these things were “common knowledge,” and this is one step toward having a better understanding of pelvic health-related considerations. I learned a ton in this episode, and you will too. Enjoyed this episode? I’d love it if you would share a screenshot in your Instagram story and tag me @brianna.battles. Episode 77: What Few People Tell You About Motherhood

Pregnancy, postpartum, and motherhood in general are significant transformational seasons, where the changes happen fast and extremely noticeably. There is a shift, or loss of what was, with a significant gain of what is becoming. It’s amazing, and it’s hard. It’s exciting and it’s ok to miss what used to be. It’s BOTH. It’s ok to have complicated feelings over BOTH the gratitude and the complexity. I hope you enjoy this raw conversation.   *** Find more from Bri at briannabattles.com and instagram.com/brianna.battles The twice yearly sale on my coaching certification, Pregnancy & Postpartum Athleticism is coming!! Episode 76: Tips for Parenting a Youth Athlete

Parenting youth athletes is a subject I feel passionately about, combining my profession as a coach, and my history as an athlete, with my new reality of being a mom of little athletes. I call it “coach mom,” because that is the lens I see their sport experiences through, and If we want to help our kids pursue a lifetime of athleticism, how we raise them as they experience sports at a young age, is critical. This episode covers different strategies and things to be aware of (what to do and what to definitely not do) as your kids begin their lives as athletes.   *** Find more from Bri at briannabattles.com and instagram.com/brianna.battles The twice yearly sale on my coaching certification, Pregnancy & Postpartum Athleticism is coming!! Episode 74: Exercise Programming For The Pregnant And Postpartum Athlete

In this week’s episode, Heather Osby is back to interview me about exercise program design, specifically as it relates to pregnancy and postpartum. It can be confusing for coaches and practitioners to know exercises and progressions to help, and even more confusing for athletes because they second guess if their workouts are “right” for them. This episode helps take big concepts and theories and provides practical and applicable examples. ** Join me April 19 for my free workshop, Diastasis Debrief: Learn what you actually need to know about diastasis recti and how it impacts your pregnant and postpartum clients (or yourself). This episode provides context for the many considerations that influenced my choice, as well as what to consider before getting abdominoplasty surgery. This is part 1 of a 4 episode series on abdominoplasty. Do you need help knowing if this is right for you? Many have been told that surgery is the only choice to resolve a diastasis, and this is simply NOT true. Please download this free ebook so you can feel fully informed about diastasis, what you can do, and if you choose surgery, this ebook gives you tools, context and resources for navigating: Diastasis Recti & Athleticism E-Book This episode sponsored by: Iconic grass-fed protein drinks.

Episode 33: Recovery & return to exercise post explant

Some of the most common questions I’ve been asked since sharing that I had my breast implants removed 2.5 months ago is, “what is recovery like?” ”How do you feel?” “How was returning to exercise?” I cover these questions and themes in this episode. There’s a lot of fear around surgery because of the recovery process. It can be intimidating and hard to know what to expect, from the early weeks (navigating wound care and swelling), to easing back into exercise strategically, knowing what to watch for, what to do and not do. If you’re wondering what recovery and return to exercise looks like post explant, I think you’ll appreciate the personal and professional insight from this episode. SHOW NOTES: www.BriannaBattles.com/episode33 MORE ABOUT THE SHOW: The Practice Brave podcast brings you the relatable, trustworthy and transparent health & fitness information you’re looking for when it comes to coaching, being coached and transitioning through the variables of motherhood and womanhood. Whether you’re a newly pregnant athlete or postpartum athlete, knowing how to adjust your workouts, mental approach and coaching can be confusing. Each week we’ll be tackling questions around adjusting your workouts and mindset, diastasis recti, pelvic health, mental health, identity, and beyond. Episode 32: Why I removed my breast implants

I’m starting off 2021 with a confession!  I had my breast implants removed in November 2020.  I know I’m not alone in this choice and experiences that have accompanied the decision to get them (and get them out less than 2 years later).  I hope this episode helps continue a conversation around advocating for yourself, regardless of the circumstance! In this weeks episode, I hope to have an honest conversation, to take away the shame and/or stigma surrounding this, and instead shine light on a very common experience for many women. This is my personal experience, and is not medical advice.  For more information on this subject matter, check out this Facebook group and website  https://www.healingbreastimplantillness.com/ Thanks for listening today!
