Leighton Smith Podcast #239 - May 15th 2024 - Jonathan Rauch

A sceptical knowledge-seeking society will always welcome controversy, criticism and inquiry, even about ostensibly long-settled ideas. And free expression plays an indispensable role in society, sorting truth from falsehood. Jonathan Rauch is a journalist, and author of a number of books. While a very pleasant interviewee, it will be interesting to see how many of you he will agitate. We make comment on Pope Francis; again, he is wrong. Two Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court issue warnings about the state of America. And once again, we visit The Mailroom. Leighton Smith Podcast #237 - May 1st 2024 - Anthony Willy

"Never before has New Zealand faced a constitutional contest like the one being played out right now.” The opening words to “Guns drawn as Waitangi Tribunal tangle whips up storm.” So began a column from The Australian. We discuss this scenario with retired judge Anthony Willy, and venture that it’s time to ditch the Waitangi Tribunal. But there's more. Also, separate comment on decline of the West, political and editorial bias in shaping climate science, and senility at the highest level! Mrs Producer joins the mail-room. Leighton Smith Podcast #233 - April 3rd 2024 - Dr Mike Schmidt

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand seems intent on establishing itself as WOKE Central, a centre of "diversity, equity and inclusion". In other parts of the finance industry, there is growing realisation that this DEI is not a good investment. Dr Mike Schmidt argues that DEI is an ideological program, and we see from numerous examples, both local and international, that the results are mixed and in most industries inappropriate. It is an informative and enjoyable discussion, finished off with The Mailroom with Mrs Producer. File your comments and complaints at [email protected] Haven't listened to a podcast before? Leighton Smith Podcast #231 - March 20th 2024 - Gary Judd KC

The Jim Allan commentary on the NZ Supreme Court’s Smith v Fonterra decision (Podcast 229) encouraged considerable reaction from the 'court of the pen’. Foremost was correspondence from Gary Judd KC, who not only communicated to us but published a corresponding article in The Law Association’s LawNews. Gary Judd expands on his views in podcast 231. Even a legal novice will find interest in it. Elsewhere we have commentary on “saving the planet”, and the New York Democrat endorsing Trump. And we visit The Mailroom with Mrs Producer. Leighton Smith Podcast #230 - March 13th 2024 - George Friedman

George Friedman, founder and chairman of Geopolitical Futures, is in the studio with us this week. And there’s plenty to discuss; wars and rumours of more wars. Possible peace in Ukraine, Star Wars, politics and crises, and the part New Zealand has to play. Also, George’s book “The Storm before the Calm” which predicted the 2020’s would be turmoil for America. Are his predictions on target? And a new analysis of the death of John F Kennedy which, if correct, indicates collusion amongst America’s Agencies. We have mail from a former MP, and much more in The Mailroom with Mrs Producer. Leighton Smith Podcast #229 - March 6th 2024 - Professor James Allan

The legal fraternity in this part of the world is delighted at the Supreme Court’s decision on Smith v Fonterra. But not everyone feels that way. In his inevitable style, Professor James Allan critiques the decision and the direction a collection of un-elected ex-lawyers are “usurping power to themselves at the expense of the elected branches of government”. As a specialist in constitutional law, Jim is in his element. We also spend words on SCOTUS and Trump. An important and essential commentary. Plus we visit the Mailroom with Mrs. Producer. Leighton Smith Podcast #227 - February 21st 2024 - Aaron Day

Bitcoin trail blazed the interest and development of digital money. As a result, the drive for a cashless society with fiat currency being replaced with CBDCs is being pursued by an increasing number of countries. Currently, that count is a worrying 130. The ultimate goal is a one world currency. We discuss all of this with Aaron Day, author of “The Final Countdown, the People’s Last Stand Against Tyranny by Central Bank Digital Currencies”. We comment on Grant Robertson and his new home at the University of Otago, and how higher education wrecks freedom. And we visit The Mailroom with Mrs Producer. Leighton Smith Podcast #224 - December 13th 2023 - Jerusalem

The events in Israel on October 7 shocked the world. The differing reactions from various countries, cultures, races and religions should have shocked just as much. The lack of historical knowledge and perspective exposed the thin veneer of civilisation. The similarities and differences of AD 70 to 2023 indicate that while some things change, human nature doesn’t. Via the writing of Josephus, Simon Sebag Montefiore and Douglas Murray, we can improve perspective. File your comments and complaints at [email protected] Haven't listened to a podcast before? It’s not just national government that should concern us. Local government should concern us too. Auckland has spent an inordinate amount of time and money trying to become a world class city. Leighton Smith Podcast #219 - November 8th 2023 - Steven Joyce and Lord Jonathan Sumption

Three weeks post election, and we are still no nearer to knowing what the final make up of the government will be. We speak with Steven Joyce, in what we thought might be a half hour chat. But even after his barking dog was edited from the interview, we still had fifty minutes of discussion on the incompetence that saw Labour outed, and the rectification that is now sorely needed. We tackle the second segment of Lord Jonathan Sumption; in actual fact, the part that we find the most interesting. This week, The Mailroom takes a break, but will be back next week. Leighton Smith Podcast #218 - November 1st 2023 - Lord Jonathan Sumption and Patrick Basham

In July this year we spoke with Jonathan Sumption, and we catch up with him again during his trip to New Zealand. In the interim there has been a lot of change that is worthy of his opinion - the Hamas attack, Israel’s response, and the associated reactions provide a hornet’s nest of issues. We communicate with Patrick Basham in Riyadh, attending the Future Investment Initiative, also known as “Davos of the Desert”. The consensus of the 6000 attendees is that the FII serves the planet far better than Davos in the Alps. So it’s a lengthy podcast with Sumption up first and Patrick at around the 30 minute mark And, of course, we finish with The Mailroom with Mrs Producer. Leighton Smith Podcast #212 - September 20th 2023 - George Friedman

I first met George Friedman in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1986. George was then a Professor at the War College. A few years later he established Stratfor.com and then in 2015, GeopoliticalFutures.com. He has authored a number of books and is now writing on the future of war in space. In this podcast, we delve into a plethora of geopolitical issues and crises, including Russia, China, the U.S. and Ukraine. We look at what might be gained or lost through this country’s declining armed services. And we ask whether defence should be an election issue? We reference the wisdom of George Orwell today's woke environment and we visit The Mailroom with Mrs Producer. Leighton Smith Podcast Episode 53 - March 4th 2020

COVID 19, or the Coronavirus, has dominated headlines this week, and will likely do so for some months to come. This week I talk with science writer and communications consultant Alex Berezow. Also a public speaker, he is known as “The Junk Science Debunker."He is Co-author of ‘Science Left Behind’, ‘The Little Black Book of Junk Science’. He has a PhD in micro-biology  and writes for The American Council on Science and Health. There’s more on the virus from various perspectives. And more on the death of one of the world’s greatest scientists, Freeman Dyson. I’ve been referencing Dyson for a number of years. He is a great loss. A physicist and a rebel, he thought “every good scientist should be a sceptic”.And there’s your correspondence with Mrs Producer aka Carolyn.File your comments and complaints at [email protected]'t listened to a podcast before? But, here’s a spoiler, it’s nothing to do with this years election result.George Friedman is my guest in podcast 52.Also, continued analysis of the coronavirus. We still don’t know where it came from or how bad or otherwise it might be. One thing that’s certain is…..opinions aren’t in short supply. Another certainty is that the crisis is causing increasing economic damage. The Democrats are in chaos and Russia again is an election threat. Mrs Producer and feedback and I’m accused of a number of personal faults. He was a New York Times reporter, but don’t hold that against him. He wrote on the pharmaceutical industry, and on cyclone Katrina. He reported on the world of finance and the crimes of Bernie Madoff. Then the Iraqi war, where he went on two separate journalistic missions spread over a number of months. It was in that environment that the idea for John Wells was born. The central character for his first novel ’The Faithful Spy’. He has since penned another eleven. But bestselling author Alex Berenson was in NZ to talk on a different subject. This time it is marijuana and his book ‘ Tell Your Children’.It was a wide ranging and enjoyable discussion. And finally, the compulsory appearance of Mrs Producer and some feedback.File your comments and complaints at [email protected]'t listened to a podcast before? Leighton Smith Podcast Episode 23 July 3rd 2019

I’ve always liked Alan Duff. Well, as close to always as I remember. He’s got guts, courage and determination. He doesn’t pull punches. And it’s been a while since I talked to him. Alan’s new book, A Conversation With My Country, gave us the chance. The discussion runs for forty minutes but I wasn’t watching the clock. For those who are unfamiliar with Duff, let me introduce you. There was so many other matters that I ended up passing them on to next week’s podcast, but I do get stuck into plastic bags and manipulating green activists, and a couple of other topics. There’s also some good feedback. This week's podcast is a special edition. Some weeks ago I promised a climate devoted program. Many have let me know how much they have been anticipating it. Some with how frustrated they are in the waiting. This podcast is not what I first had in mind. Canadian climatologist Dr Tim Ball was most generous with his time and you can now hear the result. Tim has devoted many years to exposing the fraud that the science is settled. Any real scientist knows it is not. Tim Ball is the author of the book ’The Deliberate Corruption of Climate Science’.In the words of Nobel Prize winner Dr Richard Lindzen, those who say the science is settled have “stepped outside of science”.There will be more to come! Get in touch: [email protected]'t listened to a podcast before? Leighton Smith Podcast Episode 10 - 3 April 2019

Podcast 10 is wide-ranging. The matter of freedom of speech is occupying much attention by numerous commentators. It is also commanding conversations around the table, and with good reason. New Zealanders have grown accustomed to having their say, even with the knowledge that it may find disagreement. Right now that accepted freedom is under threat and as the weeks tick over, it will become an even more urgent conversation.Brexit is also on the agenda and it deserves to be. It’s got so boring! But then it springs to life again. And then from the ‘science is settled file’, a couple of interesting developments. This week's interviewee has a most interesting career. From Ukraine to Rome, the Middle East and Singapore-based Asia correspondent, as bureau chief in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and as Dubai-based columnist of the greater Middle East. He is Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent for the Wall Street Journal, Yaroslav Trofimov. Under discussion is the Culture War dividing Europe; Islam, and Brexit.Your ongoing comments will form a part of each podcast. Get in touch: [email protected]'t listened to a podcast before? Leighton Smith Podcast Episode 9 - 27 March 2019

In this week’s podcast - more reflection on one of the darkest periods in New Zealand history. There is no getting away from it.As the days pass since March 15, the expected machinations are developing. The blame-game is inevitably underway. But that is not what concerns this podcast so much as calls for an assault on democracy and freedom. More layers of legislation to patch up previous inadequacies. No collusion! The Mueller Report finally shows up the MSM for what it is. For two years the public has been misled. But the scramble to try and protect unworthy reputations is in full flight.Don’t miss the conversation with Dr Stephen Chavura, political theorist and intellectual historian, as he outlines what we need to do to protect the freedoms that were fought for in two World Wars and more.More feedback with Carolyn aka Mrs Producer and a couple of other matters, including real feminism.Your ongoing comments will form a part of each podcast. Leighton Smith Podcast Episode 8 - 20 March 2019

Unsurprisingly, podcast eight is focussed entirely on the Christchurch mosque terrorist murders. On January second, Geopolitical Strategist George Friedman wrote: “What has happened to us? From Shanghai to Moscow to Brussels to Washington, there is a sense that something has gone wrong with the world, with our nations, with our friends and even with ourselves……..the sense is everywhere and it came upon us with startling speed”.On Friday March 15, New Zealand, long considered immune from the international ruckus, suddenly found otherwise.Leighton and George discuss the questions and repercussions around this horrendous event.Your ongoing comments will form a part of each podcast. This week, Leighton Smith admonishes Greenpeace and their absurd demands regarding investment in the NZ Superfund. Also some indirect reaction from Greenpeace co-founder, Patrick Moore. And a tribute to one of the countries senior scientists who died last week. He was a long-time critic of man-made climate change/ global warming, which he termed a ‘religion’. Michael Jackson, the cause of much discussion regarding his personal life, leads Leighton down a very concerning path that you won’t hear elsewhere. This week Leighton speaks to Addiction Treatment Specialist Ben Cort. Leighton Smith Podcast Episode 6 - 06 March 2019

The delight of podcasting is partly the lack of rules. I’m discovering that what we are doing is a ‘work in progress’.Consequently, there will be some tweaking as we go. And, by the way, some of your suggestions are most helpful.Commentary today on school kids wagging class on a spurious rationale. A listener email raised an interesting and undoubtedly controversial suggestion. But the interview this week, well it’s more a conversation I hope you’ll enjoy as much as I did.Andre Van Heerden has lived the sort of life that makes people interesting. He studied law, was a history teacher, a soldier, a policeman, a refugee and followed all that with a career in advertising. He is the founder of the corporate leadership program, The Power of Integrity. He has written three books on leadership and follows a number of academic interests. He is my kind of academic. And of course, Carolyn aka Mrs Producer makes her now usual contribution with some feedback.Your ongoing comments will form a part of each podcast. Leighton Smith Podcast Episode 2 - 6 February 2019

In podcast number two, Leighton discusses a somewhat sensitive subject, infanticide. Considering the legislation just passed by the state of New York, and changes in the making in New Zealand, abortion once again deserves attention. On the week of Waitangi Day, issues are raised with regard to large amounts of taxpayer money being poured into questionable Maori issues. Then the Trump effect, where a commentator constructs a most interesting theory with regard to the President. The reaction to Trump by Democrats, Never Trumpers, and some Republicans from a different perspective. Then a perfect example of why the science is not settled. In this podcast edition, Leighton talks with Steven Hargreaves, Principal of Macleans College, Auckland, on the report by Tomorrow’s Schools “independent” task force. For those who were unconcerned about the government’s intentions regarding education, think again. The report, if adopted as recommended, would create yet another layer of bureaucracy. Will New Zealand ever get it right, and get back to basics?  Then Mrs. Producer (by popular demand) joins the podcast to read some of the myriad of feedback.Your ongoing comments will form a part of each podcast. In his inaugural podcast, Leighton Smith interviews David Betz, Professor of the War in the Modern World from King’s College, London.Professor Betz talks Brexit, the political undermining of democracy, and the frightening possibilities ahead.“The Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling, warned that putting a stop to Britain’s withdrawal from the EU may end the centuries of ‘moderate’ politics that the UK has enjoyed since the English Civil War. Remainer politicians rounded on him, predictably accusing him of scaremongering and practising gutter politics.”For those even slightly interested in developments that would affect us all, this is a must-listen.Leighton also delivers his take on capital gains tax, and its inevitability under the present regime. The Tomorrow’s Schools report gets an airing - the battle for our children’s future is underway. And Leighton delivers a heartfelt message to those many listeners who have corresponded.Your ongoing comments will form a part of each podcast.
