I navigate the world with the unwavering support of my faithful companion Siddy affectionately known as Pom Pom, my service dog, who has been my guiding light through the darkness of visual impairment and the fluctuations of Complex PTSD for seven years now.   In South Africa, where I reside, the concept of service animals remains largely unknown and inaccessible, especially in underprivileged communities. Having experienced this, and noticing the urgent need to change this, a passion to establish a service dog empowerment programme under Holding Albus was born. Eskom’s Turnaround Strategy GUEST: CALIB CASSIM - Chief Financial Officer Eskom Data published by Eskom tracking the performance of its fleet for the first quarter of the year shows that while the group has improved breakdowns and slightly boosted energy supply, tanking demand has given South Africa some breathing room. Detailed analysis of Eskom’s data by independent energy analyst Pieter Jordaan shows that first quarter power demand in 2024 was 5.7% lower than the same period in the previous year, dropping from 25.95 to 24.47 GW/hr.   For the same period, power supply only increased by a marginal 0.4% from 23.24 GW/hr in 2023 to 23.33 GW/hr in 2024. Notably, Compared to 2023, power supply remained stagnant, posting near-identical output for 10 out of the first 13 weeks of the year.

No matter how well planned and executed, a public event can be easily derailed by bad weather, negligence, breach of contract or a host of other factors that may be beyond the control of the event organiser. Even mega-celebrities are not immune to suffering glitches during their live performance. Pop icon Madonna was recently forced to start one of her shows late due to a technical issue during soundcheck. While a late start could understandably irk fans, the two-hour delay to the show in Brooklyn, New York, in December, saw two irate fans instituting a class action lawsuit against the singer and concert organisers. “Whether the lawsuit succeeds or not is a legal question that will be answered in court. However, if it does succeed, the event’s organisers will not be covered by their event liability insurance policy,” says Melita Thurling, Head of Liability and Special Risks, at iTOO Special Risks.

Bench Marks Foundation The recent attention on survival miners, known as 'Illegal' miners or Zama Zamas, in South Africa has been marked by tragic events such as a gas explosion in an abandoned Harmony mine shaft in Virginia, deployment of 6,000 SANDF soldiers in November, and gun battles between syndicates around Riverlea. Politicians are scapegoating these miners ahead of the 2024 elections, but the Bench Marks Foundation is delving deeper into the issue. The Foundation's report explores the roots of survival mining, tracing it back to the old migrant labor system and the decline in demand for labor in the mining sector. Many survival miners come from underdeveloped labor-sending areas, where the social fabric has been impacted. The South African government's failure to hold mining companies accountable and provide licensing for survival miners exacerbates the problem.

Bafana Bafana will battle another opponent they have played and beaten recently when they take on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the Afcon bronze medal match on Saturday. Bafana beat the DRC 1-0 in a friendly match at Orlando Stadium in Soweto in September last year. At the time of their previous meeting, both teams had already secured their place at the Afcon in Ivory Coast and used the friendly as preparations for the start of the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup that kicked off in November. During the Afcon group stage, Bafana had another rematch against two teams—Morocco and Namibia—who they both defeated. They were held to a goalless draw by Namibia in Orlando Stadium in September last year, three days before they welcomed the Democratic Republic of Congo and beat them at the Soweto venue. At the Afcon, Bafana were in the same group as Namibia and crushed them 4-0 before beating Morocco 2-0 in the last 16 round. This is why Bafana feel they may have the upper hand against the DRC. Bafana and the Leopards will be determined to sign off in style at Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan after they were both beaten in the semifinals. Bafana lost a penalty shootout 4-2 against Nigeria after a 1-1 draw with the Super Eagles, while the DRC were beaten 1-0 by the host county, Ivory Coast. Since Bafana were crowned African champions in 1996, South Africa lost their status as one of the feared teams on the continent. On the other hand, the Democratic Republic of Congo were one of the early powerhouses on the continent in the 1960s and 1970s. They won their first Afcon title in 1968 and then again, as Zaire, in 1974, the year they became the first sub-Saharan African side to play at the World Cup.    

Amadiba Crisis Committee 2024-02-05: Dealing with a flood of garbage on the Wild Coast Guest: Nonhle Mbuthuma  - Madiba crissi mangeent Over hundred villagers on the Amadiba coast in Mbizana have picked piles of garbage on the Wild Coast during the past ten days. Hundreds of bags have been filled with plastic, bottles and filth on the shores. We covered 25km of the coast, from Mtentu to Sigidi villages. We found plenty of medical waste on the beaches. Hospitals or clinics must be dumping expired medicines in the wrong places. We have never before seen sealed medication bottles on our coast. Such waste doesn’t come from villages and towns We have reported to the councillors. The Winnie Madikizela Mandela Local Municipality is aware of the situation. The community has put in our best effort to clean the whole coast of the WMM Local Municipality. But the danger is still there. The garbage has not yet been collected to dumping sites. All rivers that come from afar – Mzamba, Mnyameni and Mtentu – are filled with garbage floating down to the ocean. Villagers have been picking garbage for kilometres along the rivers. This situation is a danger to our children. They might open and eat medicines or be cut by broken bottles. The coast is a ‘Marine Protected Area’ and the garbage flood threatens marine life. It is even a danger to our livestock. 15 years ago, waste picking on the Wild Coast was organised by the Department of Environment. Then came ‘business opportunities’ and the tender system. On top of that we now have ‘austerity’ and the budget cuts. The rivers and the Wild Coast are polluted because waste management in towns and townships have collapsed. The government has failed dismally. Climate change with heavy rains and floods then do the rest.  Austerity must stop and the tender system must be scrapped. As Amadiba Crisis Committee we are organising to fight a flood of garbage floating to the coast. But we are not alone in Amadiba. Municipalities fail to do the very least expected of local government. They focus on promoting mining and ‘smart cities’ to “attract investment”. Who is going to invest in places where the local government cannot do the basics? Civil society and companies have taken municipalities to court for the failure to serve their citizens, placing municipalities under administration. As ACC, we wonder if we must go down the same route, given the pollution of our rivers and coast as well as the terrible state of our roads. We call upon the Premier of Eastern Cape, Oscar Mabuyane, to lift his eyes from his beloved national mega projects and focus on the local,

It was the annual Agri’s Got Talent (AGT) taking place at the Paarl Taalmonument amphitheatre. Instead of the traditional annual competition, the evening was a celebratory Reunion Show featuring most of the top performers of the previous nine years. With the stage set, lights and microphones tested, the Western Cape’s most talented farm workers took to the stage to share their gift of singing to an audience of almost 1000 people! The idea came to Anton Rabe, Hortgro's executive director, ten years ago when he was thinking to himself...there's Idols, America's Got Talent...why not celebrate our local agricultural talent with Agri's Got Talent? “Agriculture isn’t just about food and wine, it’s about our people,” says Rabe. "Our agricultural workers have so much more to offer than just the work they do on the farms or warehouses. They are amazingly talented people. “The initiative started out small,” reminisces Rabe, “But within a few years, AGT, as it is known today, grew into the most exciting entertainment project in Agriculture," shares Rabe. In celebration of the ten-year milestone, previous years' top ten participants as well as some of the previous years’ winners came together for an agricultural music spectacular in the winelands. The music and voice coaching for the competition and the concert has been overseen by the famous artist, Frieda van den Heever, for the past ten years. AGT is more than just a singing competition. There is also a strong focus on life skills development. Over the years, top ten contestants have achieved amazing milestones. Ayabonga Mboho, the first winner of AGT, was initially a seasonal worker. Since he won AGT, he has been invited to sing overseas three times and today he teaches music at a school in Paarl. Victor Fredericks, who was in the top ten in 2018, has already published two books. Jason Baartman, a rapper, took second place in 2017. Starting his career as a general worker, today Baartman is a production manager and responsible for as many as 50 workers in the nursery, and in harvest time about ten picking teams under him. Baartman is also part of the ATKV-Crescendo project and has performed at the Woordfees. Beyond personal milestones, AGT participants give back to their communities. Newfound confidence, skills and knowledge are shared with families, colleagues and the community. They become ambassadors for agriculture. The state of Air Pollution in Gauteng GUEST: QUENTIN HURT - Managing Director at Skyside   -          Today we interview Quentin Hurt the managing director at Skyside.  He joins us to shed a light on the high levels of air pollution in and around Gauteng.   Guest: Quentin Hurt Quentin studied Chemical Engineering.  His Master’s thesis in water treatment techniques and enthusiastic supervisors led to a deep interest in industrial environmental issues. This led to the establishment of a business in environmental testing and ultimately a specialisation in air quality issues.  His work involves understanding the issues at play in specific air pollution situations and then working with companies, community and government to monitor the situation with the intention of reducing the risk to people.  He has worked in the field for 30 years and his projects, while focussed in southern Africa have taken him throughout Africa, to Canada, the US, Europe and Eastern Europe.  He continues to find it a complex field and is very interested in the opportunities that citizen science and the use of new technologies bring to allowing people to manage and understand their personal exposure and control of the air they breathe.

In September 2021, multi award winning South African guitarist Vuma Levin was named as the  Standard Bank Young artist for jazz. To this end he undertook to create a work commensurate  with the scale of this achievement. "Vuma Levin is destined to be one of South African jazz's greatest musicians" - Mail and GuardianBorn a South African and raised during the unstable interregnum years of Post-Apartheid South Africa, Guitarist Vuma Ian Levin's music is an attempt to interrogate conceptions of identity, nation, culture, power and being both globally and in the emergent, post 1994 South African Democratic project. Beginning his studies in jazz at age 18, Vuma received lessons from the South African Jazz guitar legend, Johnny Fourie.  He went on to attend the Conservatorium Van Amsterdam where he graduated with honours. His time in the Netherlands saw him successfully contest several competitions including The Keep an Eye Jazz Awards, The Dutch Eindwerk Prijs, Keep and Eye: The Records, The Dutch Jazz Competition and the Montreux Socar Internationl Jazz Guitar Competition.

Sign language is set to become South Africa’s 12th official language after a long fight for recognition GUEST: PROF. South Africans are among the heaviest drinkers in the world. The country has the highest per capita rate of alcohol consumption in Africa. Excessive drinking is especially widespread in the Western Cape. Research estimates that per capita alcohol consumption in the province is between 30% and 40% higher than the national consumption. The latest Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), released on Tuesday, found that 81% of Grade 4 learners in South Africa cannot read for meaning in any language. The country ranked lowest out of the 43 participating countries in learners’ reading skills. I manage and run chemistry practicals, andexperiments for thefirst-year BSc students, chemical engineers (first- and second-year students),as well as Extended Development Programme (EDP) students.I also manage the chemistry building for the first-year students, known as theAlgemene Chemiegebou. I'm blessed to have four staff members who workwith me to ensure that the building operates smoothly and professionally. Thisjob is not a one-man show.What does a typical day at work look like?A day at work is never predictable for me, even though there is a set timetablefor the practicals that I run and help teach daily. I arrive at the office just before8 am, to have my coffee fix while checking emails. I have a lot of studentscoming in with questions throughout the day, as I have an open-door policy.There is never a dull moment in my office. Sometimes there is somethingunexpected that requires my immediate attention, such as a lift suddenly notworking or a blocked drain in one of the laboratories.How did your education or past experiences prepare you for thisrole?I come from the private sector, with experience in the chemistry sector,mostly in mining. I have been a lab technician, a lab supervisor, and amanager, and I owned a company that worked with the mining sector,specifically focusing on iron ore minerals. Having worked in differentcompanies, I was prepared for this role. I arrived at SU with a B-Tech inchemistry, and now I hold an MSc in applied science in chemistry.What do you enjoy most about your role and working at SU?I mostly enjoy the interaction with the students. Contributing in somesmall way to shaping young minds of students who will go out there andmake a difference gives me joy, and the strength to wake up each dayand come to work. I also enjoy being part of the transformation that istaking place within SU. Since I started working here in 2014, there hasbeen a lot of progress in this regard.I'm passionate about the SU Chemistry Outreach Initiative (SUNCOI)programmes that I have been part of since 2015. It is a pleasure to visitpreviously disadvantaged schools to interact with pupils and teachersabout chemistry. We can show them that it is possible to be a greatscientist, irrespective of where you are from. SUNCOI reaches pupilswho would otherwise never have considered chemistry as a study option.Tell us something exciting or interesting about yourself that fewpeople would expect?People are sometimes surprised to learn what I do, as I don't look like atypical scientist with my dreadlocks and appearance. I have a greatinterest in fashion, and I'm involved in the industry outside of work and inmy private life.I also used to be a professional solo Latin dancer when I was younger.Now that dancing is not an option anymore, I enjoy running and haveparticipated in many races as a member of a running club. As aChristian, my faith – as well as my family and friends – keep megrounded.

Guest: Dr. Trust Pfukwa With his extensive knowledge in food science and technology, he started a lineof teas that does not only taste delicious but also offer a range of healthbenefits under his company “Utamu Food”. The range of Utamu tea productsinclude the Honey Bush tea that gives the sweetness of nature with arefreshing taste, the Honey Bush tea with sour fig and the Honey Bush Tea withwater pear, all products are natural and caffeine free.“Utamu” is a Swahili word for “sweetness”, which describes the taste of the tea.Dr Pfukwa always felt the need to introduce people to indigenous fruits andbelieves that the tea is a way to present the sweetness of indigenous fruits.During his PhD studies, he focused on bioprospecting indigenous South Africanfruits byproducts as a source of antioxidant preservatives for application inprocessed meat, under the supervision of Prof Cletos Mapiye. He revealed thatindigenous fruits byproducts are a rich source of powerful polyphenolicantioxidants with high potential as natural preservatives in processed meatproducts.“I had the desire to introduce people to the native fruits of South Africa. Fruitssuch as waterpear, sour fig, wild plum, and kei apple, among others, arecurrently considered underutilized and under-researched, despite their highnutritional and medicinal value. These fruits can potentially be incorporated intoprofitable value chains, which can uplift the rural livelihoods,” says Pfukwa.He adds “Unfortunately, due to westernization and the nutritional transition,these traditional food sources have been forgotten or looked down upon asfood for the poor. Hence, our objective was to contribute to the necessaryrevival of African cuisine and provide people with a sample of Africa in a cup.”Mapiye said: “There is lack of information and interest towards valorisation ofindigenous fruits and their by-products in Africa. Dr Pfukwa’s research iscontributing immensely to unmask the potential of these often neglected andunderutilised resources for food, nutrition, and income security. His businessventure in the form of Utamu Food presents a reawakening of these fruitswhich tallies closely with the need for sustainable food sources and potential touplift marginalised communities.”One of the things that sets Utamu Foods apart from other tea brands is thefocus on indigenous foods as a source of health and wellness. Dr Pfukwa hasincorporated superfoods like sour fig and water pear into his tea blends, whichare known for their anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and antioxidant properties.He also avoids using artificial flavours or additives, ensuring that Utamu teasare all-natural and healthy.

GUEST: LANDSEER COLLEN - principal, director and founder of BPASArchitects.“If architects only operated in a paper world, we would never get our buildingsevolved beyond paper,” he says. “Architects must be dreamers, visionaries,explorers and entrepreneurs. The principle of Avant-garde architecture wherebyarchitecture is innovative, radical and always progressing, becomes the focusin urban development when an architect designs for the future. To be able totake a commission from a client and translate that into a drawing, you first mustbe able to create a vision of the future. It takes imagination – plus the cognitivedevelopment of being able to think in a 3D environment.”He says that architects not only translate a client’s need into an image, buthave to be able to play with it to see what’s possible. For example, renownedarchitect Frank Gehry, known for iconic buildings such as the GuggenheimMuseum Bilbao in Spain and The Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle, USA,created the Dr Chau Chak Wing building, at Sydney’s University of Technology,based on the idea of a crumpled paper bag.1. How does architecture impact on our communities and society?2. What is your creative process when embarking on a new project3. In what way do architects need to design for the future, can you giveexamples of what you mean?4. Who are some of the great architects that have influenced you?5. Architects are innovators and artists but also problem solvers - can youchat more about this concept?He was also said to have designed the Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles bysimply crumpling up a piece of paper and saying “there’s the design”, but hetold CNN that this story was just a gag invented for the TV show The Simpsonsand that his process is far more involved. Like Collen, he says it begins withgaining a deep understanding of what the client is looking for and theparameters of the job (from the budget to the specific site). Function comesfirst, but then the architect also has the opportunity to bring something specialto the project that goes beyond an understanding of the engineering andtechnology – that will “engender an emotional response.”Collen describes this quality of architects as “a necessary sense of playfulness”and says architectural professionals navigate the fine line between dreams andwhat is possible. “We have to be visionaries to understand what we’redesigning – to interrogate not just the moment in time we’re being asked todesign for, but the long-term vision for a building and how it will work 50 yearsin the future.”This means that architects can’t view their buildings in isola6on but must“Architecture is science translated into art,” he says. “You can’t separate thosetwo disciplines out if you’re an architect – you need them to work together insymbiosis. It’s a collaboration between the creative and physical environment.We must push boundaries to explore what’s possible. If we don’t, we’re nolonger designing the future, we’re just a tool to replicate the same things in thenow. We should not blindly accept limitations.”He says that architects are by nature problem-solvers and innovators, which issomething that is often overlooked by those outside the profession.
