He previously served as both the Commissioner on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (26 April 2014) and as Malta's third MP with a disability, (18 January 2021) becoming one of two MPs with disabilities at the time. During his time as an MP Mr. Scicluna advised the current Prime Minister Dr. Robert Abela on matters relating to disability rights and was instrumental in passing a law criminalizing hate speech targeted at those with disabilities. From Activist to Malta’s representative for disability at the UN (feat. Samantha Pace Gasan)

Malta’s my favourite country on earth. From megalithic temples that are older than the Great Pyramid, Stonehenge, the Acropolis and Newgrange.  The fact that it’s a tiny archipelago in the middle of the Mediterranean leads Malta to having one of the best climates in Europe. It’s also Europe’s safest country (EU membership since 1 May 2004 and Eurozone membership since 1 January 2008, officially replacing the Maltese Lira aka Pound and is officially bilingual with Maltese (the only Semitic language in the EU) and English being the two official languages. Malta combines everything I love about both Australia and Switzerland and takes out the bad parts. Honestly I hoped to write a song about everything I love about this country.  From crosses, knights, the awesomely named “Pharaoh Hound, Maltese Dogs to Twistiees, Pastizzi (a type of savory pastry filled with either ricotta cheese or curried peas), the first-rate incredible national anthem “L-Innu Malti” (The Maltese Hymn) the 1956 referendum on whether the archipelago would be formally join the UK as a constituent country in which 77.0% of voters voted in favour of full integration as a part of the UK to Robert Abela, another shining example of a leader being a true human rights respecting changemaker. Other notable historical figures include former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff who was PM when the 1956 referendum was held, the Knights Hospitaler who founded Valletta, Malta's modern capital and largest city in the 16th century and Sir Anthony Mamo (1909-2008) the last Governor-General of the State of Malta (a Commonwealth Realm with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state which he was the Governor-General of from 5 July 1971-13 December 1974) and the first President of the Republic of Malta (13 December 1974-27 December 1976).  Join me and Samantha Pace Gasan, the Commissioner for the Rights of Persons with Disability at the Maltese Commission on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities as we explore the advancements in disability rights in the shining gem of a nation and the role that he/she/they played in advancing the understanding and acceptance of disability in the Magnificent Mediterranean Marvel of Malta.  Prime Minister Robert Abela met someone with a disability on 2 December 2020: https://tvmnews.mt/en/news/person-with-a-disability-spends-the-day-with-pm/  Prime Minister Abela proposes annual increase for those supporting people with disabilities: https://tvmnews.mt/en/news/pm-proposes-e4250-increase-annually-for-those-caring-for-persons-with-severe-disability/  Learn about the Maltese Commission for the Rights of People with Disabilities and the Maltese Federation of Organizations of Persons with Disability:  CRPD:  https://www.crpd.org.mt/  MFOPD:  https://www.edf-feph.org/our-members/malta-federation-of-organisations-of-persons-with-disability/  Check out the Atelier Für Alle disability-oriented art program: https://www.atelierfuralle.org  If you have any questions about this episode, please send them to: [email protected]

A HUGE THANK YOU!!! to Scotland: One of My Most Important Audiences

I understand this may seem extremely trivial but this morning I witnessed a massive spike in plays from a country which doesn't often listen to my podcast. Scotland is my favourite UK constituent country (my sincerest apologies England, Wales and Northern Ireland) because of my family's ancestral connection to the country. Additionally the country's what in my opinion are the best accents, the best food options, the best coat of arms design (although the award for best flag design goes to Wales) in the UK. Ever since I uploaded my episode about Vienna I've noticed that my most popular audience (the location where my newly released episode's receive the most amount of plays/listens right after I release them) has shifted from the Austrian capital to the "Golden State" of California. I would like to give a massive THANK YOU!!! to my phenomenal Californian audience for your continued enthusiasm and support.  Also I would like to give a massive "Gracias" to the people of Ecuador. Promoting and Raising Awareness of LGBTQ+ Rights and Combating Ableism, (Featuring Joel/Vanora Molberg)

In recent years we've seen two things, an increase in homophobic attitudes and the lack of discussion about "Ableism" aka disability discrimination. Joel Moberg aka "Vanora" is a member of both the disability and LGBTQ+ communities and has undertaken various projects to raise awareness about the rights of both LGBTQ people and people with disabilities. In this episode he and I are going to explore how disability can be used as a unifying tool when it comes to raising awareness about various social justice issues and learn what it's like to learn about what it's like to explore one's own gender and identity while also living with a disability. How the UK can teach us about diversity in 2021

2020 has been a trying year for all of us but it has also been one of hope.  We have fought against Covid-19 while also simultaneously fighting against the pandemic of racism and the fight for equal rights will continue in to 2021.  In this episode we’ll take a look at how 2021 could shape up to be a year of equality and diversity by looking at one of my favorite examples.

The Plan Moving Forward

First of all I would like to apologize for the audio quality during the last few episodes. I am aware of how bad it was and I hope the audio quality in this episode will make up for it. Moving forward I would like to try and do a live show where you can call in and reach out directly with your disability rights questions, questions about the show and other topics that you would be interested in having me cover. I hope you are all interested in this idea as this will only work if you are interested in it.
