Welcome to the Holderness Family Podcast! On Facebook and YouTube we are known as The Holderness Family. Building A Winning Mindset with Dr. Nicole Detling
Penn and I are no strangers to sports. We both enjoy playing recreationally, watching matches, and our kids are competitive too. There’s so much to admire about professional athletes. But what can we learn from them? This week we have world-renowned sports psychologist, Dr. Nicole Detling, on the podcast to talk about how to get our heads into a winning mindset.Dr. Nicole has consulted athletes for 25 years, including Olympic and Paralympic medalists, world champions, professional athletes in the PGA, MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL as well as professional rock climbers, road cyclists, mountain bikers, and water skiers. Professional athletes are ordinary people doing extraordinary things. In Dr. Nicole’s experience, these individuals have higher levels of commitment and perseverance. We discuss how we can get in the zone in our everyday lives, as well as the pros and cons of youth sports. You can learn more about Dr. Nicole's practice here: https://www.headstrongconsulting.co

The Slow 60
Last month, I announced my Slow 60 Challenge in an attempt to minimize anxiety and unnecessary stress in my life. Maybe you’ve probably heard of the “Hard 75 Challenge” - my Slow 60 is completely the opposite. This week on the podcast, I talk to Penn about my Slow 60 Challenge and how I am doing with it. While I haven’t been able to achieve my goals everyday, I don’t get too hung up if I slip. I make a promise to myself to try again tomorrow. In America, we live in a society that values busyness constantly. It’s led me to ask if it is even possible to live a slower life. Are you working full-time, raising kids full-time, and been able to discover the secret? I’d love to hear from you. The Measure of Your Life with Nikki Erlick
This week we try our first Holderness Book Club! Nikki Erlick, author of The Measure, joins us this week to discuss her New York Times Bestselling novel. (While I have read the book, Penn is representing the book club member who just comes for the wine.) We talk to Nikki about the inspiration around her book, how the pandemic influenced it, and she answers your questions. We stayed away from spoilers, so if you still want to read the book this will be a good starting point. The premise of the book is thought-provoking regardless if you read it or not: If you could know the length of your life, would you want to find out? What Are You Afraid Of?
Kim and I have a phrase that we talk about in our marriage book: Name it to tame it. It’s the idea that when you say your fears out loud you take away some of its power over you. It was the inspiration for today’s podcast about naming what you are afraid of... without getting too heavy. I promise this is a fun podcast episode. We also call this exercise "naming the tarantula" - more on that in the pod. Another inspiration for today’s podcast was a recent video we did about Halloween costumes in the 80s. I have a fear of clowns and when we asked our followers for their throwback photos we realized: EVERYONE WAS A CLOWN. Whyyyy? What are you afraid of? Name your tarantula and tell us! Fixing Your Craving Mindset with Michael Easter
In our society of overabundance, we are constantly craving more, more, more. For me, I can't stop scrolling. It’s like a slot machine, but in this case, the slot machine is my phone. You know you can get something of value, you know you’ll eventually get a reward if you keep trying, and oh boy can you play it over and over again. Luckily, we had Michael Easter on the podcast this week to talk about fixing our craving mindset and rewiring our habits. Michael Easter is the bestselling author of the books, The Comfort Crisis and Scarcity Brain: Fix Your Craving Mindset and Rewire Your Habits to Thrive with Enough. We were so happy to have him on because we've quoted his book numerous times. Easter has dedicated his life to researching and writing about what leads humans to live healthier, ha

Recently, we put out a song parody in response to Taylor Swift showing up to watch Travis Kelce at the Kansas City Chiefs game. (The rush of a deadline is exciting for Penn’s ADHD brain as well as both of our former news journalist backgrounds.) After we hit publish on the video, we kept getting the same comment: "I wish you would sing every news story!"On this week’s podcast, we explore the idea of how it would sound if Penn sang the news and he gives us a behind-the-scenes look at his writing process. Changing How We Talk About Death with Hadley Vlahos, RN
Penn and I have had our fair share of interactions with hospice as our loved ones grow older. There are so many people who don’t always have access to hospice care in the way they would like. But one thing I do know, the nurses who care for us in our final days are a special breed. One of these special nurses is Hadley Vlahos, a registered nurse devoted to hospice care.Hadley (or Nurse Hadley as she is known online) recently wrote a New York Times best-selling book The In-Between: Unforgettable Encounters During Life's Final Moments and she joined us on this week’s podcast. She writes about the life lessons she gained from her patients and the phenomenon of “the in-between.” These are the days where it seems people have one foot here on Earth, and the other somewhere else. It turns out, you can learn a lot about living from the dying. We talk to Hadley about some of her stor

Should We Get A Sleep Divorce? with Dr. Shelby Harris
Some people get FOMO (the Fear of Missing Out) but I have FOMS (the Fear of Missing Sleep.) I go to bed early and I am an extremely light sleeper. Penn, on the other hand, likes to say up a bit later than me and... is a snorer. Recently, Penn had a cold and slept in the guest room and I had some of the best sleep of my life. It got me wondering, are there couples who have happy marriages and sleep in separate rooms? This week we have Dr. Shelby Harris, a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in behavioral sleep medicine to talk all about it. This week we were in the mood to laugh, so who better to invite back to the podcast than comedian Charlie Berens. Even if you don’t make silly videos for the internet, we’ve all fallen into the trap of “I’ll be happier when…” We keep moving the goalpost forward without taking time to admire how far we’ve come. As the great Miley Cyrus once said: It’s not about how fast I get there, it’s not about what’s waiting on the other side. It’s the climb. (And we talk all about it.) ADHD Life Coaching with Dr. Ned Hallowell
True story, when Penn first got diagnosed with ADHD in the mid-90s, his doctor handed him a book called Driven To Distraction. It was a brand new book by Dr. Ned Hallowell about ADHD and it was groundbreaking at the time. Penn's doctor encouraged him to read it to understand his brain. Penn said, "Great!" And then he proceeded to leave it in the backseat of his car... forever. This week we come full-circle and interview the ADHD OG, Dr. Ned Hallowell on the perception of ADHD, what we should do for ADHD caretakers, and life coaching works. What Happened To Summer with Carl Honoré
For some reason, this summer feels busier than our regular school year. Our teen and pre-teen kids are involved in camps, sports, studying for SATs, and thinking about college. When I was their age, I was happen to hang with my friends and maybe get a part-time job scooping ice cream. Nowadays, teens are looking for internships to put on college resumes. What happened to summer? What happened to slowing down?We invited Carl Honoré, an international bestselling author, broadcaster and the voice of the Slow Movement to help us this week on the podcast. His two main-stage TED Talks have racked up millions of views, and his counter-intuitive message is this: To thrive in a fast world, you have to slow down. Our Taylor Swift Era with Lola Holderness
I want my kids to be happy. (I know, I know, I know. It’s an impossible and unrealistic goal.) I’ve been in enough therapy sessions to know that chasing “happiness” is a fool's errand. We should really be appreciating all the moments we have on this planet. Being “happy” is a fleeting emotion. So when you get to see your child experience joy, true unbridled joy, you want to bottle the feeling and carry it in your heart forever. Last week, we had the chance to see Taylor Swift's Eras Tour in New Jersey and I got to witness what every mother wants. I got to see my kid (and about 70,000 others) really, really happy. This week Lola and I had debrief the entire concert experience on this week’s podcast. She shared her favorite moments, the touching story behind my new favorite picture, and how Swifties came to our rescue after the concert. Lola also answers some of your most commonly asked questions. (And we give concert tips if you're going!)We

Let's Get Uncomfortable with Dr. Selena Snow
My goal this year is to put myself in as many uncomfortable situations as possible. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone. On The Amazing Race, we were put in MANY uncomfortable positions. I found that it was easier for me to tackle bigger-picture things (like bungee jumping) than the everyday things. Something as simple as making a take-out order makes my pits sweat (and in a recent social media post, we found out many of you feel the same about phone calls to strangers!)Penn and I wanted to know why phone calls are making people anxious, so we asked Dr. Selena Snow. She says humans tend to pay more attention to negative information because we are hard-wired to spot danger. However, avoiding things that make us uncomfortable can make things worse. What Will Stop Gun Violence with Ryan Busse
Every time I learn about another mass shooting in this country, I lose at least a day. So, we wanted to ask the question: How did we get here and what will stop gun violence in our country? You guys. It happened. I blinked and my tiny colicky-baby got her license. I keep repeating to myself, “She’s a good driver. She’s ready for this. A Second Chance At Parenting
Apparently more people in their 40s get pregnant than I thought... This week, Penn and I talk about having to recently buy a pregnancy test and how that made us reflect on our parenting. We also hear from many of you what you would do differently with a second chance at parenting, and talk to our friends Taylor and Heidi Calmus. The Calmus Family is expecting baby #4 and we hear about their new children's book. Learn more here: https://amzn.to/3LHhNKP. Tell us what you like, ask a question, or just say hi. Call 323-364-3929. The Gift of Swedish Death Cleaning
There’s a lot of reasons we hold onto things, but one profound thing about that is: Everything that you own, owns a part of you. This week we talk with Kathryn Snearly, of the viral YouTube channel Do It On A Dime. Kathryn introduced me years ago to the idea of Swedish Death Cleaning. (And no, it’s not where you listen to death metal music while you organize.) If you’re in the stage of life where you are cleaning out items from a loved one who has passed and you feel overwhelmed, I hope you find comfort in this podcast. Kathryn discusses some of her own struggles with letting go of possessions from her loved ones and tips to help. We also talk about the two very different outlooks on clutter, writing your own "death wishes" document, and Midwest dialects. Take a listen to our discussion, and tell us if you feel inspired. We hope y

Forced Family Fun
In our family, Kim does most of the planning… groceries, kid schedules, house maintenance... so when it comes to family vacations, Kim deserves a break. So I planned our recent family vacation to Chamonix, France. We have talked about how we really loved our time on The Amazing Race, because it got us out of our comfort zone and took away all our distractions. So in that same vein, I wanted to plan an experience for my kids that was out of our comfort zone, free of distractions, and most importantly, that we would do together. We talk all about our vacation of forced family fun and how some of the tips we have are backed by actual science. (Plot twist!) Be part of the next chapter of our game, Family Faceoff! You can suggest clue cards for the next evolution of our game and if we pick yours, we will even include your name. You can fill out as many suggestions as you like: https://forms.gle/zXyRZ5fCkzajgYyJ6. Thank you again for all your support it means the world to us.</

Forgiveness, ADHD, & Fishbowl Brain
If you want a master class in forgiveness, marry someone with ADHD. While I am the queen of holding a grudge, Penn couldn’t be more opposite. On this podcast, we discuss the connection between ADHD and forgiveness with Dr. Marcy Caldwell. Her gift for metaphor is something that resonates with Penn understanding his own brain. My favorite is her explanation around the ADHD brain being like a fishbowl, as well as some of the not so great things about ADHD and toxic relationships. In the end, it's probably good that Penn and I are yings to each other's yangs. Be part of the next chapter of our game, Family Faceoff! Navigating the Emotional Life of Teens with Dr. Lisa Damour
There is an adolescent mental health crisis going on in America right now. It’s so severe, in fact, the US Surgeon General issued a rare advisory on protecting youth mental health. Take an already emotional developmental time and couple it with a global pandemic… that’s a lot on teenagers. Dr. Lisa Damour explained that distress should not be your main worry as a parent of a teen. Distress is going to happen. Be part of the next chapter of our game, Family Faceoff! How You Met Your Person
This week we did a whole episode about relatshes (our funny way of abbreviating relationships) in honor of Valentine's Day! We talk about how we met each other, we hear how some of you met each other, and for any of you single folk out there, we talk about where to find love. Oh, and we discuss how every love story in a rom-com movie is built on a lie. Happy Valentine's Day (or whenever you're listening to this!) Be part of the next chapter of our game, Family Faceoff!
