Episode 95: A Different Kind of Truth, Indeed (And This Is An Understatement!)

Another week, another "Dave unhinged" as Diamond David Lee Roth one continues to burn all bridges left (we need more analogies!), this time with Dave's recent (mercifully short) stories on the Roth Show, about a Van Halen accountant getting thrown out a Jones Beach VH show and then, supposedly why the last Van Halen studio album, A Different Kind of Truth, isn't on the streaming services. Darren takes those stories apart, Steve waxes confusingly on what he hell is the point to all the "truth" and has always thought Dave ignored Wolfie on stage. All that, and more...

Episode 64: Insiders, Emails & Texts, Oh My! (Dave, Eddie & More)

This week, Darren and Steve dig deep into two big stories and David Lee Roth and Van Halen news. Starting first with the great (transcribed) interview a Van Halen-themed podcast did with a VH insider -- and that person had a LOT to talk about! Alongside that, there's the recent story of the former music journalist who befriended Eddie Van Halen via email, and EVH sure told him a lot over nearly five years! SO much to unpack from both those stories: Eddie's relationship with Dave, the reunion, the end, Dave's health, unreleased music in...Dave's basement (?!), the "kitchen sink tour" and much more. Also, how that all ties in the recently-leaked Van Halen reunion from Eddie Trunk.

Episode 63: R.I.P. Brett Tuggle + Interview With Gary Marino

At the top, Darren and Steve discuss the death of keyboardist/musician Brett Tuggle. Brett played with Dave on the Eat 'Em & Smile tour, played on and co-wrote three songs (including "Just Like Paradise") on Skyscraper, toured with Dave for Your Filthy Little Mouth and (possibly) helped out putting together Dave's 2019 band. Brett was also in Fleetwood Mac for 20 years, played with Lindsey Buckingham solo and also played with a slew of others, including Jimmy Page, Rick Springfield, David Coverdale, John Kay and Steppenwolf, Styx’s Tommy Shaw, and Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels. Plus,  Remember when DLR replaced Howard Stern? This week's interview is with a guy who helped get Dave ready for that gig, Gary Marino. Gary is a Boston-area native who has spent time with David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone. He's a jack-of-all-fun trades: tours all over New England with the comedy and rock & roll band World Gone Crazy, is the founder and producer of Cape Cod Comedy Fest, a producer, writer, director and DJ. He's got great stories of spending time with all of Van Halen's lead singers, thoughts on Dave's time on the radio, DLR's solo albums and much more! Episode 61: More David Lee Roth & Van Halen Tribute Stuff + Interview with Konishiki

Still more speculation on the Van Halen tribute that may or may not have been or may still be, or just may never be at all! How long ago did Joe Satriani, Alex Van Halen, and Dave all speak? And what about Sammy Hagar? Plus, members of Dave's most-recent band have recently been posting on Instagram from Henson Studios...why? Also, the myriad of things Dave turned down through the years and "Dave and confused."  This week's interview is with actor, musician, TV host, philanthropist and legendary sumo wrestler Konishiki. He was the first non-Japanese-born wrestler to reach ōzeki, the second-highest possible rank in the sport. During his career he won the top division championship on three occasions and came very close to becoming the first foreign-born grand champion, or yokozuna. If you saw Dave's 2013 short film Tokyo Story, Konishiki played Big Brother. Darren talks with him about that, the WWE, his amazing success in sumo, being born and raised in Hawaii, and much more. Darren talks with Longwave's Steve Schiltz about his band Longwave, Van Halen, and of course, David Lee Roth! Steve talks about how Eddie's guitar playing was his entry to Van Halen, Dave, and Steve Vai and Jason Becker's catalogs, and how it informed and inspired how own work. Plus, the time Steve and James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins) were incredulous when a younger travel companion hadn't heard of, and subsequently did not get, the greatness of "Hot For Teacher." And Darren tells Steve about the Japanese import of the Spanish-language version of Eat 'Em And Smile, Sonrisa Salvaje (yes, you read that right). *** Steve Schiltz co-founded Longwave in 1999, and by 2002 the band was signed with RCA Records. Longwave’s sophomore album, The Strangest Things, helmed by Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann, brought the band’s music to the masses, and international tours with The Strokes, Bloc Party, OK Go and many more followed. Longwave went on an unofficial hiatus in 2009, after releasing Secrets Are Sinister. After years of collaboration, Schiltz wrote, recorded, mixed and produced Tonight Is The Ghost by himself — the first set of songs from the project that would become Hurricane Bells. The album quickly garnered kind words from critics and a following of fans. Steve's music has been featured on the soundtrack to The Twilight Saga: New Moon, alongside Death Cab For Cutie, The Killers and more. Hurricane Bells released an EP in 2010 and a second album, Tides And Tales, the following year. Another EP, There’s Nothing Precious in the Past, was also completed. The band toured the States and played to crowds in Japan and India.  Steve has toured with the likes of Albert Hammond Jr., The Pierces, Teddy Thompson and James Iha. His playing and writing can be heard on Blue October’s 2018 hit album I Hope You’re Happy (for which he co-wrote the title song), as well as UK hits by Birdy and Gavin James, and James Bay’s international 2019 hit “Bad”. He's also his own boutique studio, composing music for documentary films and ads for multiple national brands and companies. In 2019, Longwave reunited and released “If We Ever Live Forever”, followed by “Live At Bowery Ballroom” in 2020. New records by Blue October, Harvard Of The South, and the Japan-only “There’s Nothing Precious In The Past” are all slated for release in 2020.
