3 Stoic Rules for a Wealthy Life

There are 3 rules to become wealthy and still live like a Stoic. Because, if you’re like me, we don’t really aim to become famous or own fancy cars. We simply want to build wealth so we can have peace of mind. That’s the key to a wealthy and satisfying life. In this video, I talk about the 3 Stoic rules to achieve the above. We’ll dig into thriving in a winner-takes-all economy, breaking through misfortune and bad things in life, and becoming more resilient through the regular meditation on loss. When we follow these 3 Stoic rules, we give ourselves the mental capacity for growth - which is the key to progress and inner fulfillment. The Stoic Path to Wealth book summary read by the author

What does it mean to be wealthy? It's a common belief that being wealthy means having lots of money. That’s true on some occasions, but it’s not always the case. My book “The Stoic Path to Wealth”, introduces another way of looking at life. This is the first book that combines wealth building and investing with Stoicism. Because the Stoic philosophy is about focusing only on what you can control and disregarding anything else. It’s a philosophy you can apply to every aspect of your life, especially wealth. To lead a wealthy life while remaining Stoic is to manage your emotions and focus on what you can do with your own money. In this video, I will summarize the most important points of The Stoic Path to Wealth. Stoicism + Investing: Become a Wealthy Stoic

How can you become a wealthy Stoic? Stoicism is about living a simple, virtuous life. That’s why many people have the misconception that being Stoic means refusing material wealth. But that’s not the case. The other thing about Stoicism is focusing on what you control and ignoring everything else. This is how you live a wealthy life while remaining Stoic. Epictetus, the only Stoic philosopher who wasn’t born into wealth (he was a slave), said it well: “If you can make money remaining honest, trustworthy, and dignified, by all means do it. But you don’t have to make money if you have to compromise your integrity.” In this video, I give you practical techniques and strategies to get better at investing, whether you’re a beginner or experienced investor. These tips will ensure you stick to Stoic principles while building long-term wealth. #Stoicism #WealthBuilding #InvestingTips #StoicPhilosophy #FinancialFreedom #TheStoicPathtoWealth Timestamps: 00:28 - How to combine wanting to be wealthy, while following Stoicism 00:52 - About Me and The Stoic Path to Wealth book 01:27 - This is the first book that combines Stoicism and Investing & Wealth 01:35 - Three techniques you can apply to become a better investor 02:15 - Epictetus quote on making money without compromising your integrity 02:55 - It’s possible to make money in an honest way 03:22 - You don’t have to make a lot of money to become wealthy 04:12 - 3 Stoic Techniques that will make you a better investor 04:20 - Stoic Technique #1: Always cap your losses 05:47 - Juvenal quote on the gradualness of progress or loss 07:02 - Stop-loss in trading 08:03 - If you decide to buy something… (A lesson from Jesse Livermore) 09:20 - What it means to invest for the long-term 11:10 - No one knows what will happen in a year or two. Flow + Pomodoro The Super Productivity Stack

In my experience, you do your best work when you’re in a good mood and you’re focused. You can also look at it as being a state of “Flow,” which is a term the psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi coined. You can get in a Flow mind-state by having the right balance between challenge and skill level. How do you know you have Flow? When work is effortless and you’re making progress. I’m finally in that state as I’m writing this after being out of it for a few months. I was dealing with major renovations at my home, and then, I had to do a lot of small tasks here and there for my upcoming book. Once I finished my most pressing tasks, my goal was to get into Flow again. I took it easy. Fiddled a bit. Read some books. And journaled a lot. “Getting close” is something I wrote about often. And then, a few days ago, it hit me: Ignore all the noise and only focus on writing. So that’s what I’m doing now. Plus, I combine it with another productivity strategy, the Pomodoro technique. When you do that, you have the ultimate productivity stack. Pre-order The Stoic Path to Wealth My new book is coming out July 16th. It shows you how to build enduring wealth in the stock market. Wealth and Money Are Two Different Things

I wanted to be rich so bad for my entire life. In high school, I watched Wall Street with Michael Douglas and Charlie Sheen. It was supposed to be a cautionary tale but I saw it as inspiration. I wanted to be Gordon Gecko, the crazy high risk Wall Street trader. When I was 17, I got a job at a call center during the summer. I was on the phone every day, working double shifts. I was selling mobile phone subscriptions to people, mostly elderly. It was a shameful job but I was making money. So I felt good. This is how badly I wanted to get rich. But I was a teenage idiot. Now, 20 years later, I finally understand that being rich and having a lot of money is not the same as being wealthy. You can also be rich and not wealthy. At some point, we all realize that life is just a collection of our memories. Pre-order The Stoic Path to Wealth My new book is coming out July 16th. The Key to Picking Stocks like Warren Buffett

I analyzed three of Warren Buffett's biggest stock picks (GEICO, Coca-Cola, Apple) and drew lessons from that. By understanding the thought process of his stock picks, we can emulate his mindset. Whether you’re a passive or active investor, we can all use a little bit of “Warren Buffett” in our strategy. You probably won’t be surprised by the conclusion of this article: Have patience, be diligent, avoid greed, and bet on a prosperous future. We all know what it takes. But the key is to internalize these ideas. Pre-order The Stoic Path to Wealth My new book is coming out July 16th. It shows you how to build enduring wealth in the stock market. Stop Putting Imaginary Pressure on Yourself

I think having a sene of urgency and responsibility when it comes to your career is one of the biggest motivators. But if you put too much pressure on yourself to succeed, it can work against you. This is a dynamic that I’m constantly trying to balance. Last year, when I finished the final draft of my new book, The Stoic Path to Wealth, I immediatly started thinking about the marketing campaign. My self talk included a lot of “I need to do” xyz. And then, I would think, “If I don’t do this, the book won’t succeed.” This type of “I need to do X (action) otherwise y (bad outcome) will happen” thinking is a complete and utter waste of your energy. And you must avoid it as soon as you become aware of it. Here’s what Epictetus said about that: “If you want to make progress, dismiss this kind of reasoning: ‘If I neglect my business, I will have nothing to live on.’ It is better to starve to death in a calm and confident state of mind than to live anxiously amidst abundance.” The truth is: You don’t need a lot to have happiness and peace. 7 Money Mistakes That Prevent Smart People Getting Rich

If you spend an hour on Twitter or Instagram, you almost believe that everyone can get rich quickly. “Start an AI company or write content online. You’ll make $500K a month, just like me!” The idea that success can be duplicated is one of the oldest fallacies in business and money. Just because a certain blueprint worked for Person A, it doesn’t mean it works for Person B. This is also why a lot of smart people are not wealthy. Over the past two years, I’ve been getting emails every week from disillusioned writers. They say they fell for the dream that these social media prophets talk about everywhere. They realize success is not only about skill, it’s also a matter of talent and luck. And the interesting thing is that all these people are smart. After all, it sounds so logical. If someone else did it, you can do it too, right? Well, not with everything. More on that in my other new article. Pre-order The Stoic Path to Wealth My new book is coming out July 16th. 5 Classic Stoic Principles to Live By for a Happier Life

I seriously started practicing Stoicism when I was 28. That’s when things started to change in my life. That was in 2015. Since then, I’ve become happier every year. 9 years after I started living as a Stoic, I can wholeheartedly say that happiness is a muscle that gets stronger the more you train it. In this episode, I share 5 of the most useful Stoic principles with you. Here’s my favorite, which is based on a quote from Epictetus: “Our master is anyone who has the power to implement or prevent the things that we want or don’t want.” Too many of us are slaves to external validation and signaling. The Stoics reminded us to focus inwardly. To be driven by virtues. And to ignore society’s status game. Your self-worth should be determined by yourself, not by the car you drive, job, or vacation spots you visit. Pre-order The Stoic Path to Wealth My new book is coming out July 16th. 7 Mental Barriers that Prevent You From Getting Rich

My parents bought their first house in 2000. My mother told me that one of their family members broke ties with my parents because of that. Certain people think that buying a house is not for everyone. Those types of people also believe that higher education is not for everyone. Or that owning stocks is only for rich folks. These are examples of mental barriers. So many of us have false beliefs about money and life. And those false beliefs can prevent us from ever living a good life. This is where Stoicism and mindfulness can help us. By becoming more self-aware, we can prevent ourselves from falling into the trap of mental barriers. In my latest article, I share 7 mental barriers that I personally had to overcome in my life. Pre-order The Stoic Path to Wealth My new book is coming out July 16th. The Stoic Mindset: How to Use Ancient Lessons to Face Life's Challenges

I’ve been writing about the philosophy of Stoicism since 2015. A Stoic mindset has truly changed the way I do everything. I apply Stoicism to my happiness, work, finances, and even relationships. This Stoic mindset allowed me to leverage ancient lessons into my entire life. The other day I was talking about this change with a friend. He asked me: “What does the Stoic mindset really mean? Let me explain. Incorporating Stoicism into my daily life is something that I still work on. Every time I record a podcast I remind myself: “You don’t control how many people will read it or whether they will like it or not.” And now that I’m working on the marketing of my next book, The Stoic Path to Wealth, I occasionally catch myself fantasizing about book sales. Of course, who doesn’t want to do well in their career? But ultimately, it’s not up to us. We can only pour everything into our work, and what happens next is beyond us. This shift has not only improved my productivity but also the quality of my work. In my personal life, Stoicism also gave me a different perspective. I always strive to be a positive force in my own life and the people around me. I make sure I always have good intentions. To be a good person. And to wish others the best. Get Rich With Stoicism

Stoicism, an ancient Greek philosophy, is not just a guide for leading a virtuous and meaningful life; it can also be a roadmap to financial success. Nearly all the prominent Stoics were well off, from the founder, Zeno, to the most prolific writer of the bunch, Seneca. In fact, you can argue that Stoicism was for wealthy people at the time. This is why it’s such a popular philosophy today. We have so many resources at our disposal that we don’t even know what to do with them. We live in a world where boredom is widespread. Now, here’s the main concern with the pursuit of wealth. If your only reason to acquire money is so you can a fancier car, go on more luxury vacations, and wear better clothes, you’re missing the point. I believe that Stoicism should (and must) be applied to money because without a Stoic mindset, one will succumb to greed. In my latest episode, I’ll share a few ways you can get rich without getting greedy. Pre-order The Stoic Path to Wealth My new book is coming out July 16th. Why Introversion Leads to More Self-Confidence

I’m very introverted. I truly enjoy (and need) time alone. Too much social contact drains my energy. One misconception about introverts is that they lack confidence. People falsely assume that we don’t want to be around others for that reason. In her book, Quiet, psychologist Susan Cain calls that concept the “Extrovert Ideal.” It’s the widespread belief that being outgoing, assertive, and socially proactive makes a person successful. As it turns out, introversion has its own set of strengths and advantages. According to Cain, some of these strengths include better problem-solving skills, more creativity, empathy, and the ability to work independently. In my experience, we can all benefit from cultivating the introverted side of us. When we nurture that by spending more time alone, we actually become more self-confident. We no longer look for external validation. We gain more appreciation for ourselves. More on that in my new article. Pre-order The Stoic Path to Wealth My new book is coming out July 16th. Authenticity, Making Money, and Following Your Passion

Essentially, making money from your passion is all about solving a problem or need. And getting paid for it. Whether it’s through a product or service, your focus should always be on providing value to your customers. Look at the Patagonia brand. The founder, Yvon Chouinard, saw a need for high-quality outdoor gear that was environmentally friendly and decided to fill that gap. By focusing on providing value, he was able to build a loyal customer base and become recognized as an industry leader. In my case, I started writing and publishing free articles on self-improvement that people found to be useful. Eventually, they subscribed to my newsletter. Some folks bought my books and courses, which is how I earn a living. On this journey of making money, stay authentic. Your passion is what sets you apart from others in your field. Don’t try to imitate someone else or follow the latest trends just to make money. People are drawn to authenticity, which will help you create a unique brand. In this episode, I share more about the importance of authenticity. Why We Need Purpose finish

The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche wrote this in his book, The Gay Science, about purpose: “Gradually, man has become a fantastic animal that has to fulfill one more condition of existence than any other animal: man has to believe, to know, from time to time why he exists; his race cannot flourish without a periodic trust in life–without faith in reason in life.” Nietzche said that we need to have some kind of trust in life. Just surviving, eating, working, and procreating are not enough. The purpose is the compass that guides us through life. It’s not about achieving grandiose goals or accumulating material wealth. It’s about finding fulfillment in what we do and making a difference. Pre-order The Stoic Path to Wealth My new book is coming out July 16th. It’s Time to Get Off Your Phone

Smartphones have become an extension of ourselves. We use them for almost everything - from staying connected with friends and family, to managing our schedules and even for entertainment. A recent study showed that the average person spends around three hours a day on their phone, which adds up to a staggering amount of 45 days a year. People are glued to their screens most of the time. There’s a constant need to check notifications, scroll through social media feeds, and respond to messages. This isn’t just bad for our mental health. It also distracts us from doing and finishing our work on time. For the sake of our personal well-being and productivity, we need to reduce the time spent on our phones. In this episode, I talk about how you can do that. Use the “5 Minute Worry Time” Strategy to Beat Anxiety

Worrying is a natural human response to uncertainty. But when we allow our worries to consume our thoughts at all hours of the day, they can quickly become overwhelming. One effective strategy to manage this is by only giving yourself five minutes to worry and sulk over negative emotions. Call this your 5 minutes of worry time. Worrying is a natural part of life. We all have things that cause us stress and anxiety, whether it’s work, relationships, or just the daily grind. And sometimes, it can feel overwhelming to try and push those worries away. But having a bit of time to allow ourselves to worry can also be helpful. So during your 5 minutes of “worry time,” allow yourself to think about all the things that are causing you stress. Give yourself permission to worry. By acknowledging our worries, we can better manage and control them. But once the time is up, move on to something else. Listen to this episode to learn more. How to Use Setbacks as Energy

I believe our natural response to setbacks is stress. When you deal with loss, sickness, conflict, or uncertainty, you get that heavy feeling in your stomach. Your mood becomes dark. You start feeling less energetic. Your instincts tell you to run. For some people, that type of stress lasts only a few hours, but for others, it can go on for weeks or months. What matters is that you don’t get stuck in those negative feelings. Because when you don’t address your setbacks, you start to get emotionally scarred. There’s another option: You can see every setback in your life as an opportunity to get smarter, stronger, better. Here’s what J.K. Rowling said about setbacks: “The knowledge that you have emerged wiser and stronger from setbacks means that you are, ever after, secure in your ability to survive. You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity.” In this episode, I talk about how I use this strategy in my own life. How to Reboot Your Brain When It Breaks Down

In my experience, there are a few things you can do when your brain feels clogged. Get rid of your overwhelming goals: What’s a big goal that you really want to achieve badly? Something big. Delete it from your brain. Focus on the present and enjoy yourself. You can always come back to your goal later. Stop multitasking: Focus on one thing at a time. Take a few days off or work less: Your brain needs some rest! Limit negative inputs: Avoid negative people for a while. And also avoid negativity on social media and the news. Take a long walk: You’ll feel much calmer while getting some exercise. Sleep early: Avoid screens and take a book with you to bed. You wouldn’t keep your computer running without ever restarting it. Likewise, your brain needs to rest and rejuvenate, especially when pushed to its limits. More on each tip in this episode. Join the Financial Freedom Challenge I've created a free 5-day email course. Imagine an ambitious goal for yourself. Say you want to write a book, switch to a completely different career, or start your own business. If your goal is something you have to do because your life and the lives of people you care about depend on it – then how could you increase your odds of success? Try this: 1. Always aim high. People will try to make fun of you. Tell you to be more ‘realistic.’ They will try to marginalize you. Don’t listen. Never let the small-mindedness of others contaminate your mind. 2. Focus on one thing per area. Divide your life into separate areas – say work, health, hobbies, relationships. Each area only gets one objective. Learn to decline other pursuits. 3. Adapt yourself. As Charles Darwin said: “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the ones most responsive to change.” Try to be constantly aware of your environment. And adapt as needed. 4. Get rid of your “okay” desires. There are many things we want in life that aren’t that important to us. We simply want them because they make things a bit easier or more convenient. This is fine, but doing too many can add up and distract you from your goals. Focus on things that you truly want. And discard the rest. 5. Embrace crazy. While you may not have the capacity to invent the next Facebook, solve world hunger, and send rockets to space — You can still aim to be a successful entrepreneur who also runs marathons. Pursuing success in business and maintaining physical fitness can be goals that complement each other: A healthier individual is often more productive. Those who have truly made an impact on the world didn’t dilute their ambitions. They embraced their craziness. In this episode, I share how I’ve applied this framework in my own life. Lessons I Learned from Living in Spain

For the longest time, I had this dream of living in Spain. Who doesn’t want to live somewhere warm and close to the beach?! Well, me. In this episode, I share why and what I learned. I gave it a try in 2022 and spent six months living in Spain. I learned a lot. And I even met my girlfriend there. But I realized that living somewhere warm was just a dream. I got used to the weather. And it made me realize that I was complaining too much about the weather in The Netherlands. Since I got back, I’ve been enjoying my hometown a lot more. This is literally the oldest cliche in the book, but home is truly where the heart is. As you go about your day, don’t forget to appreciate your town, no matter where you’re from. If You Have Freedom, You Have Wealth

Charlie Munger once said: “More investors don’t copy our model because our model is too simple. Most people believe you can’t be an expert if it’s too simple.” The simplest investing ideas are truly the best. Here’s a simple idea: If you have freedom, you have wealth A lot of people fall into the trap of endlessly chasing more money. They wait to feel fulfilled until they have a certain amount of money in stocks or the bank. But wealth is more a feeling than a number. Wealth isn’t just about accumulating money; it’s about financial stability and freedom. It’s the ability to weather financial emergencies, the freedom to make choices that aren’t dictated by financial constraints, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing you’re financially secure. High earners can still struggle financially if they spend recklessly and save little. On the other hand, those with modest incomes can accumulate substantial wealth by living frugally and saving diligently. This is where simple investing ideas come in. When you focus on setting your life up in a way that you have freedom, you can call yourself wealthy. And you can feel free even if you’re not a millionaire. What Seneca Taught Me About Being Content and Happy

The DF Show is back! New episodes coming out weekly. In this episode, I talk about a life lesson I learned from the Stoic philosopher, Seneca. Seneca taught that happiness doesn’t come from always wanting more, but appreciating what we already have. Contentment comes from understanding and valuing our present achievements, rather than constantly striving for the next big thing. We all want a bit more. That’s just natural. We want a bit more income to buy the stuff we want; more time to achieve more things; more strength and stamina to experience more of life, and so forth. And here’s the thing: It’s okay to strive for these goals. We don’t have to let ourselves stagnate. But we also need to take some time to appreciate what we already have. It’s something I like to journal about regularly. I look back and see how far I’ve come from when I started. When you’re consistent in executing your goals, you’ll go far, even little by little. And that’s something to be grateful for. Join the Financial Freedom Challenge I've created a free 5-day email course. How to Save Your First $100K in 5 Years

The late Charlie Munger, renowned investor and long-time partner of Warren Buffett, said this during a 1998 annual shareholder meeting of Berkshire Hathaway: “The hard part of the process for most people is the first $100,000. If you have a standing start at zero, getting together $100,000 is a long struggle for most people.” This is so true. In this episode, I talk about my own journey. Here are the stages. The Matthew Effect: Why the Rich Get Richer

The Matthew Effect, also known as the principle of accumulated advantage, is not only a platitude; it’s a scientifically recognized phenomenon that has been studied by sociologists and economists. Coined by sociologists Robert K. Merton and Harriet Zuckerman in 1968, the term derives its name from a biblical parable found in the Gospel of Matthew. https://dariusforoux.com/matthew-effect/

Being inconsistent and timeless investing wisdom

Today, I'm sharing my thoughts on a topic that might surprise you: inconsistency. Yes, you heard right. We often hear that consistency is the key to success, but let's be real - life isn't a straight line. There are bumps, detours, and sometimes, complete standstills. And that's okay. Inconsistency is not a failure; it's part of the journey. The second half of this episode is about investing wisdom. Have you heard Warren Buffett's quote, "If you have more than 120 or 130 I.Q. points, you can afford to give the rest away. You don’t need extraordinary intelligence to succeed as an investor"? This quote resonates with me deeply. It shatters the myth that only geniuses can succeed in investing. In reality, patience, discipline, and emotional stability are the traits that make a successful investor. And the good news? These are traits you can learn. So, whether your journey is about personal development or investing, remember - progress, not perfection, is the goal. So join me today as we explore these ideas further. Whether you're navigating the unpredictable road to self-improvement or trying to make sense of the investment world, I hope this episode offers you some insight and encouragement. Remember, it's all about progress, not perfection. Find my articles here: http://dariusforoux.com/articles/

How The World Can See You As An Authority

If you truly want to help a lot of people, you still need to be mindful of the principles of persuasion. No one trusts a doctor who shows up in a skater outfit. But if a skater puts on a white lab coat and carries a doctor bag, we instantly think it’s a doctor. So skills matter. But perception matters too. That's the power of authority. The Power of Compounding

Are you working on a lot of things? Is your attention not on one thing? There’s a big chance that you will not achieve the best possible results. Or worse: You might fail if you try to achieve many things at the same time The reason is simple: Most of us believe that success happens all at once. Real life is different. Keller and Papasan put it well: “Success is sequential, not simultaneous.” Things add up. You learn one skill. Then another. You finish one project. Then another. Over time, your accomplishments add up to form an impressive feat. This is especially true for money. Most people earned their money over time. Few people make a big financial splash. Warren Buffett is the perfect example of sequential success. You can achieve big things with small actions, that build up over time. In this video, I explain how Buffet’s net worth grew exponentially over the years due to a simple concept: The Power of Compounding. Thanks for listening! P.S. Don’t have time to read books? How to Read 100 Books A Year

Does your reading list keep growing? Did you buy books that you’ve never read? It might be time to cross more books from your list this year than ever. If you’re reading less than you want, you’re not the only one. A few years ago, I looked at my Goodreads page and noticed that I had read only five books that year. That realization frustrated me. I love books, but since I graduated college in 2011, I’d been reading fewer books every single year. My work and life got in the way of reading as much as I wanted. Why read 100 books in a year? You read because you want to learn from other people’s experience. Otto von Bismarck put it best: “Fools learn from experience. I prefer to learn from the experience of others.” If you want to get anywhere in this world, you need to educate yourself, and to educate yourself you need to read—a lot. In this week’s video, I show you how I read 100 books using these 5 tactics: 1. Buy In Bulk: It costs money to buy books, and it costs you time to read them — I’m assuming you have both if you’re reading this. Everyone can make time. And if you don’t have money, find a way to make or save money. 2. A(always) B(e) R(eading): I read a minimum of 1 hour per day on weekdays and even more during the weekend and holidays. Find a way to read around your schedule and your life situation. Don’t make excuses like you’re tired or too busy. 3. Read Relevant Books Only: Have you ever read a book that’s supposedly amazing and you don’t get it? Well, read books that are close to what’s going on in your life. There’s a book for everything you can think off. 4. Read Multiple Books Simultaneously: There are no rules to reading so you can do whatever you want. At times, I’m reading 5 books at once. I might read 50 pages of one book in the morning and then read another book in the afternoon. 5. Retain The Knowledge: Knowledge is only good if you use it. To retain knowledge, you need a system that helps you do that. Thanks for listening! P.S. Don’t have time to read books? How To Set Yourself Free From The Money Trap

You don’t need to be rich to be free or independent. Too many of us are held captive by money. Rich AND poor are both consumed by it. But that’s not freedom. That’s the money trap. On this episode, I share 2 tips that will help you break free from the money trap. To get over your fear of money, you need to do two things: 1. Acquire income producing skills 2. Save as much as you can You’re free to do any type of work you want. And when you have valuable skills and always improve yourself, you will never be out of work. In contrast, if you have a job, and become too loyal to that job, you forget about yourself. You _always_ work for yourself. Never forget that. You are responsible e for your own career. And you need to think about yourself first. I prefer to have an employee like that to someone who always does what they are told. The former is always trying to grow, the latter accepts the status quo. And then finally, save your money so you can quit any job you have. That’s freedom. You work because it’s you _want_ to make yourself useful. Not because you have to. Thanks for listening! P.S. Don’t have time to read books? Price’s Law Explained: Why Only A Few People Get The Majority Of Rewards

Price’s law is something that can truly change the outcome of your life and career. It can make you or BREAK you. On this episode, I explain why that is and how you can use it to become successful. The rule says: 50% of the work is done by the square root of the total number of people who participate in the work. I didn’t know about Price’s law until recently when I watched a lecture by Dr. Jordan Peterson, psychology professor, and author of 12 Rules For Life (https://amzn.to/2Iodkgf). Understanding the underlying idea of Price’s law can make your life a lot easier. Look at your current profession. Are you in a position to create substantial value? If the answer is no, move on to a different place where you CAN. Become very good at what you do. That’s the only way you can provide value. We must be realistic. There are no shortcuts. It takes time to be good—let alone be great. When you provide more value, you feel better, plus you’ll earn more. Not a bad side-effect of doing great work. Look, life is not symmetric nor linear. Only a few people in every domain are responsible for half of the results. Hence, find the domain YOU can be the important minority — you’ll also get the majority of the benefits. Then, let me know if your life isn’t better. Thanks for listening! P.S. Don’t have time to read books? Skill Stacking: These 5 Skills Increase Your Odds Of Career Success

One of the best strategies to build a career is to acquire valuable skills. I learned about this concept from How To Fail At Almost Everything and Still Win Big by Scott Adams. He calls this concept Talent Stacking (I don’t like the word talent because it implies nature, I prefer skill because it implies nurture), and writes: “Successwise, you’re better off being good at two complementary skills than being excellent at one.” You simply have more chance of career success if you have more skills. Think about it. If you’re a one-trick pony, your opportunities are limited. But if you have multiple skills, you’re simply more valuable. And that’s what career success is ultimately about. It comes down to value. How much value can you give to people or organizations? “What Skills Will Make Me More Valuable?” 1. Productivity—My whole blog’s focus is on productivity for one reason: When you’re a person who can get shit done, you will always find a way. With solid productivity skills, you can learn anything. That’s why I think it’s the first thing we must learn because it makes developing all the other skills a lot easier. Put simply: Productivity is the mother of all skills. 2. Writing—The ability to translate your thoughts into words makes it easier to do our job. When you write in a clear and simple way, you can express yourself like very few people can. 3. Psychology—A basic understanding of why we do what we do can help us to understand ourselves and others. You don’t have to become a therapist. As long as you know the basics of psychology, you’re better at dealing with other people; and yourself. 4. Persuasion—This is the art and science of communicating in a way that resonates with people. When we’re good at persuasion, we are better at leadership, sales, holding conversations, public speaking, at anything else that requires influencing others. Influence is more about effective communication than anything else. 5. Personal Finance—We often don’t think about managing our money. But when we get closer to retirement, we think, “Why didn’t I start earlier.” The time to start managing your personal finance is NOW.  Thanks for checking out this episode! Can You Ever Be ‘Done’ With Personal Development?

I might as well ask you: “Can you ever be done with eating food?” “Of course not!” you would probably answer. Well, some people actually believe they can be finished with personal development. They stop reading books or quit going to the gym. These are the people who follow trends. We need to realize that life is built from fundamentals and that it does not consist of some popular thing that’s hot at the moment. Once we identify those fundamentals, we can start to improve and strengthen them to establish longevity. How? By repeating them. Over and over again. Then, over time, those fundamentals turn into a strong lifestyle. All you need is patience. And before you know it, you are the person who continually dedicates his life to becoming better. No temporal hot thing can seduce you. Nothing halts your improvement; you’re part of a process that ends when life ends. Thanks for listening! P.S. Don’t have time to read books? Journaling As A Spiritual Exercise

Writing every day has truly changed my life. Through writing, you reformulate important life lessons in your own words. And because of this repetition, the wisdom of life becomes your second nature. That’s when you live the ideas. So even though you are writing and talking to yourself, you ingrain the wisdom in your character so that it becomes a part of your character. To me, writing is the most effective way to make the intangibility of your thoughts real. And that’s one of the greatest things in life. Marcus Aurelius, one of the most well-known stoic philosophers often wrote for himself. And I encourage everyone to do it too. On this episode, I share tips that you can use to get started with journaling every day. Thanks for listening! P.S. Don’t have time to read books? The 20/80 Rule Of Effective Thinking

How much time should I spend thinking instead of doing? It’s one of the biggest questions I struggle with. One side of me says “without doing you will never achieve anything.” Another side says “without thinking things through, you might end up doing the wrong things.” Thinking by itself is worthless because if you never do anything, what’s the use? And if you only act without thinking, you probably end up in jail or in a ditch. That's why this topic is so important. But most of us never even consider living by a thinking/doing ratio. I live by what I call “the 20/80 rule of effective thinking.” I think for most professionals in today’s age, that ratio of thinking vs doing is sufficient. Even though I'm a natural thinker, I need to remind myself to execute more than I think. Again, it’s not the ratio that counts, it’s the quality of your thinking. And ultimately, the quality of your thinking impacts the outcomes you achieve. Remember that poor outcomes in life are excusable but poor thinking and decision-making are not. Stop Being So Distracted

There’s this idea in Eastern and Western philosophy that we must learn how to enjoy the present moment without getting distracted by the past or future. But that's hard because our natural state of mind is to be lost in thought. We are constantly thinking, stressing, worrying, and being preoccupied by a force that seems outside of control. And if that's not bad enough, there are many external distractions that mess with our head. On this episode, I share how I stopped being distracted and started living in the present. Stop Chasing Money And Do This Instead

Money doesn’t make you happy. And yet, we need it to live. So what do we do? Try hard to make more money? Or, be content with what we have? The problem is that both options come with high costs. We’ve all heard about the research that says you won’t be happier if you earn more than $75K or some other magic figure. We’ve all heard about these studies by now. And yet, it doesn’t make a bit of impact on the way we live. Instead of becoming financially free, it’s better to become emotionally free. In this video, I share why. Retain More From The Books You Read In 5 Simple Steps

I’m often asked: “How do you remember the information you read in books?” In this post, I’ll explain my system. 1. Have A Purpose—Only read books that teach you how to overcome your current challenges. 2. See Yourself As A Teacher—Sharing knowledge is a great application. You might not be a teacher, but if you act like one, you’re already applying knowledge. 3. Highlight & Make Mental Connections—The more connections you make between pieces of information in your brain, the better you remember it. I do that by making a lot of notes. 4. Visualize & Imagine—Another great way to make connections in your mind is by visualizing what you’re learning. We’re visual learners, and our memories are also visual. 5. Immediately Apply One Piece Of New Knowledge—Look at your life. Ask yourself: How can I grow? That can be personally, financially or spiritually. Understand that growth doesn’t happen by itself. Learning new skills, earning more money, having a great relationship — it all takes hard work. But you can make that growth a lot easier if you apply the things you learn in books. Remember: Knowledge alone is completely useless. Thanks for listening! Don’t have time to read books? Practicing Stoicism 5: What will be will be

"Don’t wish for things to happen the way you would like them to. Rather, welcome whatever happens. This is the path to peace, freedom, and happiness.” That’s a quote by the stoic philosopher, Epictetus. On the latest episode of my podcast, I deconstruct this idea and give my perspective on it. Sometimes things happen that we didn’t expect. But we should not wish for things happen the way we want to. That only results in unhappiness. Skill Stacking: The Most Important Skills Of My Career

About three years ago, I made a discovery that changed the course of my career and life. I’ve been working many different jobs since I was 17. I also studied business and marketing, getting a bachelor’s and a master’s degree. In 2010, I started my first business. I acquired many different skills. And when I started my blog in 2015, I could use them to make an impact. When I read How To Fail At Almost Everything and Still Win Big by Scott Adams (https://amzn.to/2D4kDGo), I understood why that was. He calls this concept Talent Stacking (I don’t like the word talent because it implies nature, I prefer skill because it implies nurture), and writes: “Successwise, you’re better off being good at two complementary skills than being excellent at one.” On this podcast, I talk about WHICH skills I think are most important. Online Marketing, Cold Emails, and Facebook Ads

On this episode, I talk to Austin Floyd, an online marketer and blogger, about online marketing. Austin recently emailed me about installing a Facebook Pixel on my site. Instead of trying to sell something, he provided value. We talk about that strategy, and many more topics that are useful to all bloggers and online entrepreneurs. David Graeber: Bullshit Jobs

In 2015, I quit my bullshit job. It wasn’t a bad job or anything. I just felt that my job didn’t contribute to anything meaningful. And that’s the definition of a bullshit job—something I talk about with David Graeber on this podcast. I recently read his book with the same title and believe that we will all be better off if we stop doing bullshit work. How To Improve Your Writing Skills

The secret of improving your writing skills is to get training. Ernest Hemingway once said: "It’s none of their business that you have to learn to write. Let them think you were born that way.” But how do you learn to write? How do you practice? On this episode, I share my system for improving your writing skills. I’ve used it to write nearly 250 articles and 3 books. I hope you find it useful. P.S. "I Don’t Know What To Write About And My Writing Sucks" Here’s What To Do About That

Never have good ideas to write about? Or do you think your writing sucks? Listen to this! I recently published an article about why everyone should form a daily writing habit. It’s one of the few universal habits that can improve everyone’s life. I received several questions about that article (read the full article here: https://dariusforoux.com/daily-writing-habit/). Mostly, readers said they didn’t have any ideas to write about. Also, some of us are overly critical about ourselves. On this episode, I share tips for everyone who wants to write more. P.S. Making & Breaking Habits: Don't Focus On HOW—Focus On WHAT

Over the years, I’ve adopted many different “positive” habits. To me, a habit is positive when it improves the quality of my life. A lot has been written about forming habits. How hard is? How long does it take? What’s the best way to break habits? How do we adopt new habits? My experience is that everyone can adopt any habit they want. There’s only one condition though: You need a good reason to make a change. And in 99% of cases, the reason to change comes from personal suffering, sadness, and hurt. At some point, you can’t stand your current behavior anymore. Don’t worry about how you will change. Focus on what habits you want to form and why. How To Stay Focused When Life Is Chaotic

In a perfect world, everything is steady. You can make plans that actually come true 100% of the time. You can anticipate things in advance. But as you and I both know, that’s not how life works. I'm Starting A New Blog

I started my first website and blog in 2011 when I started my first business. At the time, blogging was already very popular for businesses. In fact, some "experts" said that blogging was dead. That's so funny to me. People make these outrages claims all the time. When I started my personal blog in 2015, it was exactly the same. "Blogging is dead! Social media and video is where you need to be!" Really? My social media activity is close to 0. And yet, my articles reach close to 250K people a month. My whole strategy is blogging. Nothing more. Nothing less. So no, blogging is far from dead. In fact, over the past year, I've been getting at least 4 emails a week from people who want to start a blog. I noticed that there's a need for practical information about the business of blogging. Hence, I'm starting a new website where I will be sharing everything I've learned about the business side of blogging. It's called Business of Blogging. And I just registered my domain at Bluehost: businessofblogging.net. It's not live yet. That's because I want to take everyone who's interested in blogging on the journey—from the start. I'm very excited about this next step in my career as a blogger. Life is about forward motion. And this definitely feels like a step forward for me. I hope I can help new bloggers with the lessons I've learned in the past seven years. I'm also starting a separate newsletter where I will be sharing content about blogging. Since there's no website yet, please join my newsletter on: http://dariusforoux.com From there, I will keep you posted on the progress. In case you also want to start a blog, I'm hosting mine on Bluehost. I've partnered up with them a while back to give my readers a discount. Coincidentally, they are now celebrating their 15th birthday with a special rate of $2.65/mo for 36 months (July 16/17). That's the best hosting deal I've ever seen. 5 Tips To Get Rich Slowly

What’s your money strategy? Do you even have one? If not, it’s not uncommon. Until two years ago, I didn’t have a financial plan, whatsoever. Even though I’ve been reading about money, finance, and investing ever since I made my first few bucks as a teenager, I never created a financial plan. But now, I think every single working professional needs a financial strategy. How do you spend your money? How much do you save? What are your thoughts about debt? How do you invest your money? How much money do you need to retire? These are questions that every person who makes money must answer. Let’s face it. If you want to retire comfortable (I’m not even talking about living a luxurious lifestyle), you need to get rich. Here’s Why Time Off Work IMPROVES Your Work And Life

What do you do when you feel tired or overwhelmed? Do you power through? Or do you take some time off? In the past, I thought that you should always power through — no matter what. Now, I still think that way when it comes to life in general. You can’t quit taking care of yourself and your family. A sense of responsibility is one of the most powerful motivators in life. But I’m not talking about a lack of motivation here. I’m talking about taking time off work. But there’s still a massive taboo on taking time off. Some people think it’s for losers. Others think it’s about escaping your work. After all, “If you love your work and life, why do you even need a break?” Good point, smart ass. Here’s why time off actually IMPROVES your work and life. Leonard Mlodinow, a physicist, who also co-authored two books with Stephen Hawking, recently shared scientific research in his book Elastic about taking time off. He demonstrates that taking time off work improves our well-being: “Though some may consider “doing nothing” unproductive, a lack of downtime is bad for our well-being, because idle time allows our default network to make sense of what we’ve recently experienced or learned.” People who never take time off to do nothing are short-term focused. “I want to reach my goals! NOW!” But as always, short-term thinking harms your long-term development and growth. What happens when you power through work and burn yourself out? In most instances, your results suffer, and you become less productive. In some cases, you even become depressed — which will set you back even longer. It’s much better to prevent burn-out or a decrease in your overall work performance. Dale Carnegie, a self-help pioneer, and author of How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, said it best: “So, to prevent fatigue and worry, the first rule is: Rest often. Rest before you get tired.” So take time off work strategically throughout the year. That’s what I just did too, and in this article, I share 5 benefits that I’ve found: http://dariusforoux.com/time-off/ Sign up for my free newsletter: dariusforoux.com/newsletter P.S. Listen To This If You Feel Misunderstood In Your Career

Do you ever feel misunderstood by others? Maybe you feel that people at work don’t get you. Or that your friends are not on the same page. Maybe others truly don’t get you. But that’s not because of them, it’s most likely because of your own behavior. On this episode, I'll tell you why perception is reality. Look, no one cares about your real intentions. Not because they are heartless or selfish. It’s because people simply don’t have the time to conduct a psycho-analysis on every single new person they meet. That’s why we have heuristics. We make decision short-cuts all the time. And one of the shortcuts we make is to judge what we see. Now, that might not be the best thing. It’s always better to collect more information before you judge someone. But the truth is that heuristics work. They make our lives easier. There’s nothing you and I can change about that. You might wonder “How do I change other people’s perceptions?” The answer lies in the science of influence. When I mention influence to people, they often think it’s something “fake.” They often say things like, “I don’t want to fake it till I make it.” But the science of influence has nothing to do with that or snake-oil salesmen tactics. Persuasion and influence revolve around two related questions: 1. How does our behavior influence the behavior of others? 2. How does other people’s behavior influence our behavior? No matter what you do, start applying the perception is reality mindset to your life, right now. The next time your spouse thinks you’re lazy, maybe that’s you made her believe you are. And if people at work think you’re bad at receiving feedback, maybe that’s because you made them think you’re not coachable. Look inwardly. Change your behavior for the better. And always be mindful of how others perceive you. Especially, if you want something from them. Want to read more about this concept? Stop Caring About What People Think—Speak Your Mind

Last week, I published an episode about why I avoid toxic people (http://dariusforoux.com/toxic-people/). I mentioned that I think less than 1% of the population has values. You wouldn’t believe how many people were offended by my opinion. “How do you know it’s less than 1%!” And a bunch of nasty words. Two people even emailed me a whole essay about why it’s “wrong.” People were truly hurt. They thought I was “wrong.” Ironically, in the same article, I mentioned that if you feel hurt, that’s because you decided that. But here’s the thing: There is no truth. I talk about this in my book, THINK STRAIGHT (https://amazon.com/dp/B077NJWFR3). Everything that’s presented as a fact in life is, in reality, an opinion. So when people try to challenge your opinions, know that they are playing a useless game. There’s only YOUR truth. Friedrich Nietzsche, the German philosopher who had a profound impact on western philosophy, famously said: “There are no facts, only interpretations.” When Nietzsche said that there are no facts, he meant that we, as human beings, ultimately rely on our interpretations of reality. There’s no way to confirm reality objectively. That doesn’t mean nothing is real and that we’re all living in a big dream. We just have to realize that facts are not the same thing as the truth. That simple thought saves you a lot of energy because it means no one can be right or wrong. Don’t bother with convincing people with different opinions of the “truth.” It’s just not a practical thing to do. Save your energy for other, more useful things. So stop caring what others think! It doesn’t matter. (http://dariusforoux.com/say-what-you-think/) Remember: There’s no universal truth or higher authority in life. You can say and think whatever you want. No one will stop you as long as it comes from a good place. There’s one condition though: Take ownership of your words. If you’re wrong, admit it with confidence. And be respectful. That will also boost your self-confidence. Give it a try. Thanks for listening! P.S. Do you want to get my best productivity tips for free? How To Surround Yourself With People Who Want The Best For You

“You’re the average of the five people you spend your time with.” It has become such a cliché. But I don’t think that we truly understand the impact that other people can have on us. The great Stoic philosopher, Epictetus, said this in his Manual For Living (http://amzn.to/2Gi2hBq): “Avoid fraternizing with people who don’t share your values. Prolonged association with those with false ideas can only tarnish your thinking. Look at it this way. Would you give $1000 to the people in your life if they asked for it? If the answer is no, stop giving the people who don’t share the same values as you, your time. I’ve narrowed down the list of people I spend 90% of my time with to my direct family and my two best friends. Other than that, I spend my time working and exercising. That’s what I mostly do. And I’ve never enjoyed my life this much. So how do you surround yourself with people who want the best for you? Here are 5 tips: 1. Avoid toxic people 2. Get comfortable with being alone 3. Surround yourself with books, videos, podcasts, audiobooks of people you identify with 4. Find people who have virtuous values 5. Why Planning Is Everything And Discipline Equals Freedom

“What should I do next?” Is what you should never think to yourself. You can have all the plans and goals in the world, but if you don’t know how you’re going to make them happen, you’re lost. Dwight Eisenhower said it perfectly: “Plans are nothing; planning is everything.” When you plan your days, you know what you have to do. And when you do what to do, you do more! P.S. 5 Tips To Improve Your Persuasion Skills

How do you get a raise? How do you get good at networking? How do you sell your products? How do you convince people of something you believe in?
These are all questions I’ve thought about throughout my career. And I’ve learned that no matter how productive or good you are, it means nothing without persuasion skills. Because what’s an artist without an audience? Or a leader without a following? I always try to learn more about persuasion because it's a topic you can never know enough about. Plus, it's something you apply every single day during the conversations you have, emails you send, and calls you have.  Persuasion matters. That’s why I asked Katrina Razavi, an entrepreneur and communications coach, to share her favorite tips on my podcast. You’ll learn how to: 1. Identify and kill your social nerves 2. Approach anyone, anywhere 3. Have smooth conversations 4. Adopt body language that’s persuasive 5. Handle tough conversations

What I've Learned in August: Conscious learning, overcoming setbacks, and why you should stretch

Welcome to a new segment of this podcast. At the beginning of every new month, I talk about the things I’ve learned during the previous month. 1. Keep a list of “What I’ve Learned” for yourself. For your personal development, and to make sure that everything you learn sticks with you, it’s good to keep a list. It’s simple. Just open a note and add new things to it as you go through a month. The point is that you want to be more conscious about learning. That’s how we retain more of the stuff we learn. 2. When you deal with setbacks, focus on learning instead of goals. Everyone deals with failure. What’s important is how you get out of a negative mindset. I do that by getting excited about new things to learn. 3. Stretch your muscles! Most importantly, your hip flexors and hamstrings. Those muscles are the biggest pain points for desk workers.
