A look back at Wee Willie McLean: Best of 2022

2022 was a busy year for American soccer, and we’ve been having all of our writers on to talk about their favorite stories they worked on this year.  A bit of a bonus episode, it’s a rebroadcast because I want to make sure people read this piece if they haven’t Pablo Maurer and Matt Pentz worked for over a year to tell the story of Wee Willie McLean, a player on the United States’ 1934 World Cup team who went missing…until Pablo and Matt tracked down his entire life story.  That description is selling it very short, definitely go read the piece. And if you still need convincing, here’s a rebroadcast of a conversation Matt and Pablo had with the Society for American Soccer History about the story, earlier this year.  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-saga-of-wee-willie-mclean/id1586833046?i=1000567524110 https://theathletic.com/3363062/2022/06/14/wee-willie-mclean/ Learn more about your ad choices. A tragedy in Indonesia | Soccer Every Day

SOCCER EVERY DAY | About a week ago, one of the worst stadium disasters ever took place in Malang, Indonesia. After the local side, Arema FC, lost to Persebaya Surabaya, fans rushed the field, and police dispensed tear gas on the field and in the stands. This created a rush of hundreds heading for the exit gates. Some of those exits were locked, which led to a crush. At least 131 people are thought to have died due to suffocation, with many more injured in the crush. Local investigations are ongoing to determine how this happened, and news there is developing. In the meantime, The Athletic’s Adam Leventhal traveled to Indonesia to speak to locals about the tragedy, and take stock of where they go from here. Today on the show, I’m going to play his report from the ground in Malang.  A warning ahead of time that this contains reporting that may be distressing to some listeners.  This was originally broadcast on The Athletic Football podcast, and was produced by Adonis Pratsides.  The Athletic Soccer on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo56QQ41e5Mc3ndX45mjauQ Learn more about your ad choices. Liverpool’s big week

Liverpool are FA Cup champions, but that was just the beginning of an incredibly pressure-packed couple of weeks. March 9: Roman Abramovich and Chelsea (from The Lead)

Today’s episode comes to us via The Lead, The Athletic’s daily podcast covering one story in the sports world at large each day:  Roman Abramovich endeared himself to Chelsea fans almost immediately when he purchased the club back in 2003. He quickly spent more money than any Premier League club owner in history, and the results on the field followed: league titles, Champions League victories, and many more trophies. But now, in the wake of Russia's war against Ukraine, questions and concerns about Abramovich, his past, and his ties to Vladimir Putin have resurfaced, and the Russian billionaire announced last week that he will be selling the team. The Athletic's Matt Slater joins us to explain what we know (and don't know) about Abramovich's ties to the Kremlin, what the sale of Chelsea means for the future of the club, and if all of this will lead to a day reckoning for the Premier League and the question of who should be allowed to buy a team. Another twist in the Washington Spirit sale saga

Over the past several months, the Washington Spirit have won the NWSL championship, and also been at the center of a very public tug-of-war over ownership of the club.  On one side: Steve Baldwin and Bill Lynch, two co-owners who together had or controlled a majority of votes among the club’s ownership group. Baldwin and Lynch have been looking to sell the club. On the other side is Michele Kang, another co-owner, who offered well over market value for the club, but has also been publicly critical of Baldwin during his time as controlling owner of the team.  Though Kang’s offer was for $35 million dollars, The team was thought to be on the verge of a sale to another group for $25 million dollars. On Tuesday, a group of the Spirit’s minority owners were key to a complete flip of the script.  It’s a lot to take in, but Steph Yang is here to help parse through some of the details. The fallout in NWSL

A little over two weeks ago, The Athletic published an investigation into allegations of sexual coercion against North Carolina Courage head coach Paul Riley. The investigation focused not just on the allegations, but also the people in charge of NWSL and the teams that investigated Riley, but allowed him to continue coaching in the league. Since that story was published, Riley has been fired, the commissioner resigned, and players have been more vocal than ever before about toxic cultures at their clubs. The Athletic’s Meg Linehan is here to talk about what’s happened, and what could come next. Meg's story: https://theathletic.com/2857633/2021/09/30/this-guy-has-a-pattern-amid-institutional[…]ormer-nwsl-players-accuse-prominent-coach-of-sexual-coercion/ Learn more about your ad choices.
