This week kicks off a new series deep diving into the music of the architects of our language of jazz. Throughout the month we'll take a look at some defining features of Bird's music. These are things we can take with us and apply to our own playing. In the first part, we are going to examine Charlie Parker's use of the 16th note triplet, something he uses quite frequently. It uses almost exclusively half-step motion in the chord changes which provides us a unique challenge when improvising. This episode is all about turning those tunes into an opportunity instead of a section to be feared. By turning them into a ballad or a set of cadenzas, we can free ourselves up to try new things and develop new pathways through tunes and keys. Playing the melody is an often overlooked skill. We focus so much on the solo we are about to play, that the melody becomes an afterthought. This week, we put an end to that thinking and make sure we treat the melody with the care and respect it deserves. We start our journey by transcribing the melody, and only the melody, to a great Dexter Grodon recording of the tune, Three O'clock in the Morning. This month we take a look at the great jazz standard, Solar. We are trying something different this time. We are placing a pretty serious restriction on ourselves over this tune, playing in only one octave! This may be one of the most frustrating things you have ever done but it really makes you think about the material you are playing at all times. It's so easy to fall back on what we know, and that's exactly what we confront in this episode. When confining yourself to a single octave you really have to think about where you are going and not fall back on any muscle memory or lines that you play without purpose. This month's tune of the month episode is a tune I have been playing and thinking a lot about lately. There Will Never Be Another You is a great jazz standard with many of the chord movements that we talk about on this show. The circle of fourths is very present in this particular composition and gives us a chance to work on many concepts relating to tension and release. This is exactly what we are doing this week when we look at a #9 to b9 resolution model. These two notes sound fantastic in tandem with one another and when they resolve is one of the most effective sounds in jazz. This week we continue our series on chord extensions by looking at the minor seventh chord. The extensions we use on this chord happen to be 9, 11, and 13. You'll notice that they are all diatonic which makes things a little bit more simple when it comes to this chord. By extracting these intervals and making them into a single note line, we harness the power of these sounds and apply them to more than just a chordal instrument. This week is all about our most important tool as musicians: the metronome. This week we are starting with some very basic material and we will progress over the next couple of episodes into more and more challenging ways of using this device. Have you ever really thought about where your time lies? I mean REALLY thought about it? Starting from this question we allow ourselves to accurately asses where we are with this important skill. This week is about the basics. Using the metronome on all four beats, on 2 & 4, and finally, switching that to 1 & 3. This week we take a look at a totally killing line from the great saxophonist, Kenny Garrett. This is from an amazing 1985 performance joined by the trumpet masters, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, and Dizzy Gillespie. See the video below for the entire performance. Kenny plays this great line over one chord and in this episode we analyze every part of this interesting, and surprisingly complicated statement that he makes. We see him play inside, outside, and everywhere in between. There are so many things we can take from this short phrase that it boggles the mind. This week continues the theme of playing smooth lines in one direction over difficult changes. This week we step it up a notch and look at the same concept over the great John Coltrane composition, Giant Steps. Yet another harmonically dense tune that is typically played at a fast tempo. What we discover when looking at this particular tune is that it's not as difficult as we first thought to connect these chords using half step motion. In this week's PDF we are going to combine directions and use a four measure ascending pattern followed by a five measure descending pattern. This week is a topic that we have touched on before but I would like to revisit it again. Learning to play long lines through dense changes is not easy and takes a lot of practice and thought. Rhythm changes are one of the best examples of chord changes that come at you quickly and can be very difficult. In this episode, we talk about playing a single direction line that weaves it's way through the changes while adapting to the harmony as it goes. This week is all about something I've been sharing with my students a lot lately. We traditionally teach the blues scale or the minor pentatonic to beginning students and use them ourselves when we are searching for that traditional, 'bluesy' sound. The problem with this scale, in my opinion, is that it actually contains a lot of really horrible notes. That's why I came up with my own scale that I call, 'The Minor-Major Pentatonic.' This scale fits the chord structure of the blues in a much better way than the traditional scales we learn and does away with those sour sounding notes that deter many of us from going any further with improvisation. Stanley Turrentine was truly one of the best saxophone players of our time. His ability to cross genres and even make people who weren't jazz fans perk up at the sound of his horn is nothing short of amazing. This week we are taking an 8 bar phrase from his solo on The Sunny Side Of The Street and investigating what makes it sound so good. What we find is his ability to blend very bluesy, somewhat simple, passages, straight into some burning, double time bebop material. This week we are going to look at one of the most famous licks in history. This diminished pattern was first made famous by John Coltrane but has become ubiquitous in the jazz language. Michael Brecker was also pretty famous for taking this line and expanding upon it. In this episode we will do the same thing. First, we look at the structure of the line, then we are going to re-arrange it and make it our own. Just a word of warning that I'm going to want you to do some homework on this episode. This line is SO famous that we don't want to play it exactly as the original was played. That requires some work on your end but it will all be worth it! This week is the culmination of our series on enclosures and it's a doozy! This week I have written a full etude for you to see the enclosures in action. We use the famous jazz standard, If I Should Lose You to demonstrate all of the concepts we have worked on so far. We use single crhomatic enclosures and double enclosures to make a one-chorus melody that you can study and steal from in order to benefit your own playing.
