매일 조금씩 (A little bit every day): Song for Korean learners

The ultimate mood booster for Korean learners. The perfect way to start your day. The best way to get your mind ready for a new Korean study session. Yes. The rumors were all true. We have been Korean teachers by day and secretly K-Pop trainees at night for the past 12 years… and we are finally ready to step up our educational music game and share our first digital single with their world. We may not be K-Pop 아이돌(idols) (because some of us are more like 어른돌s in our 40s) but our music will inspire a sense hope, or in more fancy words, a sense of ITCRASICSKT (= If They Can Release A Song, I Can Speak Korean Too!). Take a listen to this song now and dive into the world of TTMIK-Pop! Full lyrics: 어디서든지 한국어를 배울 수 있어. 톡투미인코리안과 함께라면. (그래서 이 노래를 준비했습니다. 시작하겠습니다.) 어디서든지 한국어를 배울 수 있어. 톡투미인코리안과 함께라면. Hyunwoo flew out to meet Korean learners at the National University of Singapore last week. We were invited by the Korean embassy in Singapore to give a talk on the topic of Korean culture and learning Korean. One of the questions he got during the Q&A sessions was about how to motivate yourself to continue learning. Hyunwoo shares his answer through this video. Thank you to the Korean embassy in Singapore for making this event possible, to the NUS social media team for the interview opportunity and footage, and to everybody in the audience for attending the talk! audience footage credit http://instagram.com/NUS_singapore

North Korean Language Challenge

At TTMIK we teach the Korean language as it is spoken in South Korea, but the language spoken in North Korea is not entirely different. There are, however, still some differences you can immediately notice between the two styles of the Korean language, so we decided to give the North Korean language a try with our friend Joseph Park from North Korea. Our American friend Kris Johnson, with whom we made an interview video before, also joined Cassie. Enjoy! Why 오다 and 가다 are different from the English “come” and “go"

오다 and 가다 are directly translated to “to come” and “to go” in English, but while in English you can say “I’m coming” to someone who is waiting for you to get there, you can’t use the word 오다 in Korean to express the same meaning. 오다 and 가다, and all the other related compound verbs that are introduced in this video lesson by Hyunwoo, are expressed through the perspective of the speaker, not the listener, and that creates a big difference between the usages of 오다/가다 and come/go.

When Your First Name Is Not Used In Korea

Have you ever wondered why Koreans use social titles even among close family members, calling someone “so-and-so’s father” instead of saying their first name? This phenomenon can be found in other cultures, too, but perhaps this happens more frequently in Korean. There are three possible reasons for this: 1) Literally saying “you” can be more tricky and awkward in Korean if you are speaking formal language. 2) Just using the same title over and over again in many sentences in a row doesn’t bother most people. 3) To an extent, It shows on what the relationship is based and where it was formed.

Korean Q&A - What does 웃음기 mean?

Today’s question is about the meaning of the phrase "웃음기 싹 뺐어요.” To understand what this sentences means, you need to know both 웃음기 and 싹. First, 웃음기 is a combination of 웃음 (laughter) + 기 (氣 = energy, vibe). So together it means the “atmosphere/vibe of laughter”. And 싹 means “completely” in this case, so together with 싹 뺐어요, it means that you’ve removed it completely. All together 웃음기 싹 뺐어요 means that you are being serious or made something serious for a change. Watch this video lesson to learn about some other words where the -기 ending has a similar role!

Korean Q&A - What is 급식체?

급식체 is a kind of Korean slang that some teenagers and people in their early twenties use in text message and/or on social media. The word 급식 is not used, however, to refer to food that college students eat at the college cafeteria. In this video lesson, you can learn about some common examples of 급식체 but just like with any temporary fad, we don't recommend that you actually use it.   For more Korean Q&A videos like this one, go to http://talktomeinkorean.com/qna/

(New Book!) Your First Hanja Guide - Pre-order Starts Today (10% off)

📕 📗 "Hanja(한자, 漢字)" refers to Chinese characters that are used in Korean, and even if you don't actually know how to read and write the Hanja characters themselves, knowing Hanja-based words will exponentially increase your Korean vocabulary, since many Korean words are based on these Chinese characters. Over the past few years, we have received many questions like these and here are our answers. Q: Do Korean people really know thousands of Hanja? A: Many of them do! And most people can at least read and understand hundreds of Chinese characters but they may not be able to write everything from memory. Q: Will knowing these Hanja characters actually help with my Korean vocabulary? A: Definitely! Learning Hanja can be compared to learning Latin and Greek word roots when learning English, but much easier and much more applicable to everyday usages. Q: So, even if I don't actually memorize Hanja characters, studying Hanja can still help me improve my Korean? A: Yes! Studying Hanja will help you develop a sense of understanding and even guessing the meaning of new words you encounter for the first time!
