S2E6: How to Create a Compelling Brand for Yourself and Your Business With Damien Foord (Branding for Dropouts)

Damien Foord is on Successful Dropout for the 3rd time to demystify the process of building a great brand. A brand is more than just your logo and your business card. It’s much more than your reputation or what people think about you or how you make them feel. A brand is how you make an effort beyond yourself—a company or project or just a professional persona—relatable on a human level. For people that went to university, they largely live off of their uni’s brand until they have enough experience and expertise of their own. For dropouts, we don’t have that luxury. That’s why creating a deeply resonating and emotionally connected brand is one of the most important things a dropout can do. S2E5: How to Change Your Thinking to Expand Your Opportunities With Jeff Hittner

Jeff leads Your Project X, a social venture dedicated to helping people (re)discover their purpose to build careers they’ll love. He has more than 19 years experience as an entrepreneur, consultant, professor and change-maker. He is the founder of five social ventures, including IBM’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) consulting practice. In 2011, he developed the curriculum for the first MBA in Sustainability on the East Coast, at Bard College, where he was the Leadership professor. He was also two-time Chairman of the Carnegie New Leaders at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs. This week Jeff and I discuss actionable strategies for shifting your perspective and thinking in order to realize opportunities that may be right in front of us. As much as we’d like to think we are open minded to new opportunities and changing the trajectory of our careers, we are almost always searching for new solutions from the same mindset that gets us stuck in the first place. How do you change this? Jeff and I outline and discuss six new methods that you can put into practice today: Get advice from someone that has nothing in common with you Change your setting Alter your mind (not in that way though!) 97: The Simple System to Achieve Anything With Sivana Brewer

Sivana is an ambitious and outspoken 20-year-old who believes the reason most young people aren’t achieving what they want is that they are unclear on who they want to become, undisciplined, and have a lack of support in education outside of the current system. From an early age, she has had her hand in different endeavors, including a successful fashion resale business, to a failed PR business. As a college dropout, Sivana has traveled from a suitcase for 14 months forging relationships and working with Forbes CEO’s, NYT bestselling authors, and online influencers. She is now on a mission to leave an impact through new forms of education, digital marketing, and influence. Sivana is passionate about speaking to high school students, reading way too many books (if that’s even a thing), and watching reruns of Survivor. Sivana is very much a kindred spirit and the epitome of a Successful Dropout with her approach to life and work. From her struggle to know herself, to her commitment to get 1% better everyday and her "RAD" system of reflect, align, do...Sivana has thrown herself into the self-directed life. We haven't heard the last of her!  Some of the things we talk about Making money in high school Success versus accomplishment Struggling with who you are and what you should do with your life A system for figuring out who you, what you want to do, and how you're going to get there On purpose and passion On people judging you for dropping/opting out of the status quo Turn stress into an adventure Always asking "what's great about this?" The power of committing to being 1% better everyday!  When is quitting something good...and when is quitting something bad? The importance of never losing momentum Advice for people who are thinking of dropping out of college Advice for people who are already on their entrepreneurial journey A system for progress and achievement (RAD) Reflect - Take the time to get to know yourself, what you want to do, be and have.  Align - Place yourself in the right situations with the right people that are headed where you want to go. Do - Take massive action! Take the first step!  Resources Sivana's website Connect with Sivana on Instagram!  THANK YOU! Thanks again for listening to the show! 93: Sailing around the world while building and selling 7 figure businesses with Caspar Craven

Caspar believes in challenging conventional thinking on how leaders and teams become truly effective and create extraordinary results. Caspar has 30 years’ experience in building teams to make things happen. Starting as an entrepreneur at the age of 14, he has built and led teams in global corporations, start-up businesses, struggling businesses and high growth businesses. He built a team on a trophy-winning world racing yacht. But his toughest challenge by far was building his family team to sail around the world: with his wife and three children aged 9, 7 and 2. Along the way he has built multiple successful ventures from scratch and sold one for a 7 figure sum whilst sailing the Pacific Ocean. This was one of the most fascinating interviews I think I've ever done. Caspar literally blew my mind and compelled me to set new standards for myself, my family, and my businesses. This guy took his family on a two year long sailing trip and at the same time built three successful 7 figure businesses and sold one of them. I don't care who you are or where you are in life right now, this episode will have something for you...not to mention it will be very entertaining.  Some of the things we talked about: Caspar's hair Distruption Early days and stepping out from the corporate world Intention, vision casting and goal setting How to build great teams and self-running businesses Throwing school textbooks into the ocean Stranded 500 miles off the coast with no power Watching a movie projected on a sail in the middle of the ocean Advice for students and young entrepreneurs More! 90: Moving from a permission mindset to a freedom mindset with Kylon Gienger

For this week's episode I wanted to share an interviewed I did on Stephen Warley's Life Skills That Matter podcast. This was part of an "interview swap" that Stephen and I did, and you can find his interview on Successful Dropout here.  Stephen is an absolute boss and is doing some incredible things to push this new paradigm of work we are entering into as a society. I had a blast on his show and  we discussed a lot of things including: Rethinking the American Dream. Calculating the cost of your ideal lifestyle. Moving from a permission mindset to a freedom mindset. What I learned from trying so many different career paths. I explains the concept of self-credentialing. Some inspirational quotes to remember: “My goals are all, they’re all set with the primary focus being, like, how do I want to spend my time and who do I want to spend my time with and the money, I believe, sort of comes as a result of that.” “You stick to doing what you love and building what you love, as long as it’s working, you know, I think it’ll pay off.” “I’ve never wanted to do something just because I’m supposed to do it.” Some coaching advice: I recommended these actions to start breaking out of your comfort zone to try new and different things: 1)  Don’t get hung up on finding the one right thing, pick one and just get started. 2) Switch, pivot, or quit if the first thing you do doesn’t work or you need to do other things as well. 3) Action begets more action, so don’t wait for the inspiration to strike to get started. 89: Dispelling the college degree illusion with Danielle Strachman & Michael Gibson of 1517 Fund

On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to a church door in Wittenberg to protest the sale of indulgences. These were pieces of paper the establishment church sold at great cost, telling people it would save their souls. The church made a fortune doing it. Likewise, universities today are selling a piece of paper at great cost and telling people that buying it is the only way they can save their souls. Universities call it a diploma, and they’re making a fortune doing it. Call them heretical if you like, but the 1517 Fund is dedicated to dispelling that paper illusion. Extraordinary careers are possible outside tracked institutions! Danielle Strachman (General Partner, 1517 Fund) - In 2010, during the founding of the Thiel Fellowship, Danielle joined to lead the design and operations. She is the visionary behind the Thiel Summit series that has been attended by some 2000 young entrepreneurs. Previous to her work with Peter Thiel, Danielle founded and directed Innovations Academy in San Diego, a K-8 charter school serving 350 students, with a focus on student- led project based learning and other alternative programs. Michael Gibson (General Partner, 1517 Fund) - Michael was vice president for grants at the Thiel Foundation and a principal at Thiel Capital. For nearly five years working for Peter Thiel, he has contributed research to Peter’s global macro hedge fund, assisted in teaching a course at Stanford Law School on sovereignty and technological change, and helped run the Thiel Fellowship. He serves on the board of the Seasteading Institute. Before his academic apostasy, he was working towards a doctorate in philosophy at the University of Oxford. He has written on innovation and technology for MIT’s Technology Review, the Atlantic, and Forbes. I had an absolute blast chatting with Danielle and Michael. These two are doing some amazing things for the future of education and work. They've made 45 investments into companies started by young founders and already those companies are seeing some amazing results. This is definitely worth a listen!  Child labor is is good What do you believe is true that the rest of the world thinks is false? 87: How to stop comparing yourself to others and find your confidence with Maddy Moon

Madelyn Moon is an author, podcast host, retreat leader and transformational life coach. She is a guiding force for women and men who want to stop over-thinking their lives away and live with more trust, intuition and flow. Maddy Moon was driven by perfectionist energy for most of her life, which led her down a dangerous path. Always striving to do more, be more and accomplish more, she found herself disconnected from her body with multiple disordered eating patterns, a restlessness and a lack of confidence. Maddy has since healed her heart, spirit, body and mind and is now taking life by the reigns by leading thousands of women and men across the world through their own transformational experiences via her podcast, Mind Body Musings, her website, MaddyMoon.com, and her global retreats. Her work and story has been featured in The Huffington Post, Teen Vogue, Nylon Magazine, The Daily Mail, Vice, Greatist, Men’s Health, PEOPLE and ABC News Nightline. It was awesome to have Maddy on the show. We really covered a lot of ground and discussed many different topics, but our entire conversation centered around comparison and the dangers of comparing yourself to others. This is a trap that we all fall into at one time or another, but it's unhealthy, not fair to yourself, and can seriously inhibit your personal growth and progress in any area of your life. Maddy and I discuss some of the ways you can combat this...but we also talk about how you can use comparison in a healthy way that inspires and pushes you to greatness instead of keeping you from it.  Some of the things we talk about in this episode: College, is it worth it? Cutting toxic people out of your life...and what do you do if it's family? Maddy's personal health journey. Being authentic in your business. Body positivity.  Comparing yourself to others.  Resources Maddy's website Maddy's FREE gift to you! Confessions of a Fitness Model - go checkout Maddy's book! THANK YOU! 84: Real and raw - succeeding despite your circumstances with Kylon Gienger

So this episode could potentially destroy my career. I decided to sit down and get really honest about a few beliefs of mine in lieu of an email I received from a listener. Honestly I felt really exposed recording this, and I'm still not sure if it was the right move or not. One thing I always want to make sure and do is be authentic with you guys...and I want us all to be authentic with each other. I think it's really important to open up respectful dialogues and debates on important topics and to try to understand each other's point of view. Successful Dropout is a very special community. 83: How to dispel your doubt by thinking from first principles with Matt Boney

Matt is originally from the Rocky Mountains in Idaho and moved to Miami after founding Daycation and leaving school at Brown Unive. The goal was to get closer to the hotels Daycation was partnering with to begin building the company. Matt worked in hotels growing up in Idaho and always had a passion for architecture and hospitality.  Matt left school after his first year at Brown where he took courses in economics, urban studies, math, business and philosophy. I loved chatting with Matt and hearing his story. From the early days of building a startup, to dropping out of college, to hitting rock bottom (literally sleeping on rocks!)...it's a familiar and inspiring story for many of us. I especially loved talking with Matt about acting from first principles...this is a habit you need to get into!  Some lessons: Don't give up even when the going gets really painful. I think perseverance is often overlooked as a key trait to success in entrepreneurship, lots of people quit too early. Enjoy the ride. Finding a mix or "balance" is important to keeping mentally and physically healthy, and also helps when keeping track of timeline. Go for it. Overthinking will lead to inaction. Surround yourself with people who have the "skills" or traits you'd like to emphasize in yourself. Hint: You will be spending a lot of time with your Co-Founders. Get to ramen profitable asap to have more peace of mind which will help in avoiding a scramble for investor dollars. Resources Daycation Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill THANK YOU! 74: Get your mind off the conveyor belt with Steve Patterson

Steve Patterson is a philosopher and author working outside of academia. He is also the host of the Patterson in Pursuit  podcast, where he has been traveling the world, interviewing intellectuals from various backgrounds on different topics. He's spoken with everybody from professors at Harvard to Buddhist monks in Thailand and Japan. His work covers a range of topics from epistemology and metaphysics, to the philosophy of mathematics, politics, and economics. I was absolutely embroiled in my conversation with Steve....who knew you could get philosophical about mathematics?? Does 2+2 NOT equal 4 in some cases? Steve has the ability and willingness to ask the tough questions in search of truth. Asking these kinds of questions can be extremely uncomfortable, especially if you are questioning a worldview you've known all of your life! But it's absolutely essential if you want to grow your perspective and understanding as a human being. To be human is to search for truth. Focus is key. Learn to say no to opportunity. Stop committing to multiple things at once and moving on if they aren't showing promise after six months. Define your Be, Do and Have, then commit to one direction for at least two years, saying no to everything else even if it's an enticing opportunity. If you want to build a scalable business, learn how to work with people and build and lead a team. Embrace the low points, because there is a lot to learn during those seasons, and ultimately it's just another step towards success. Also, often times, the best opportunities will come when you are experiencing your greatest challenges. A graduate of NYU's film school, Seth found digital marketing in 2014 after successfully doing marketing for another company….not long after that he quit his job and began working for clients independently.  Since then, he has created the Digital Marketing Career Blueprint, which teaches students the in-demand skills in digital marketing from the ground-up, as well as how to put together resumes, talk to hiring managers, and get the job you want.  Seth has not only found great success with In Demand Career Training, but has also helped literally hundreds of students get interviews and jobs or become entrepreneurs themselves. This entire interview was gold...but my favorite part is the wisdom Seth shares towards the end of the episode. Seth is extremely passionate about helping his students learn the ins and outs of digital marketing, and he's producing incredible results with most of his students getting great entry jobs without a college degree in under a year! There are a lot of scammers and posers out there...Seth isn't one of them. He is as authentic as they come.  Resources In Demand Career - check out Seth's website to start learning about digital marketing! THANK YOU! Thanks again for listening to the show! FAF: How to combat the inefficiencies of formal education with Christian Bell

This week I brought a special guest on - my second cousin Christian Bell. It was an absolute pleasure to chat with him. He has uniquely varied experiences in formal education, Ivy League schools, government, and small business that provide well-rounded perspectives on the pros and cons of each.  We chat about: Ineffectiveness of government and lack of incentive Checking the appropriate boxes to get into Ivy League schools Christian's experience at various Ivy League schools (Oxford, Yale etc.) Education doesn't foster curiosity, most of the time it even beats it out of you. 59: Building Rosie the Robot and the best way to find your business idea with Micah Green

Micah dropped out of Cornell university to found Maidbot, a company on a mission to bring Rosie the Robot (kind of like The Jetsons TV show) to reality - starting with the world's first housekeeping robot for hotels. Maidbot is starting to attract some major customers such as The Marriott, and The Hilton...and just finished it’s first round of funding. I really enjoyed talking with Micah. He's young, but he's sprinting out of the gate. What struck me most about this episode was Micah's mentality and reason for starting Maidbot. He actually worked in the industry he wanted to build a business in (hospitality), and experienced the problems and challenges within the space first-hand. With this knowledge he started working on solutions to solve those problems...which eventually turned into Maidbot. At the end of the day, being an entrepreneur and building great businesses is about solving people's problems by building a great solution. You won't know what solution to build, if you don't understand the problem, and you won't understand the problem, if you don't immerse yourself in the market.  Micah's advice at the end of the episode is gold! 58: How to hack systems and bad habits with Maneesh Sethi

The epitome of what it means to be a life hacker, Maneesh Sethi went to travel the world using hacked plane tickets shortly after graduating from Stanford University. He created his website, Hack the System, with the intention of showing his readers how to achieve the lifestyle of their dreams (and teaching them how to get free plane tickets). His latest project, Pavlok, is a little magical haptic feedback wearable that helps train habits, improve athletic performance, and train learning. Know more about Maneesh and Pavlok here (pavlok.com). I had a great time talking with Maneesh...the dude has done a lot, to say the least. It's clear that his passion lies in hacking well established systems that few people attempt to hack themselves or even think of hacking. Education, credit cards, music, fitness, habits...he seems to have a hack for it all. Maneesh is definitely the epitome of an unconventional thinker and doer...you'll also love his stories and experiences. Heck, I looked up his youtube channel and there was a video of him and Tim Ferriss slapping each other. Haha.  We talk about: Maneesh became a famous DJ in Berlin in 3 months Hiring people from Craigslist to slap you when you get distracted from your work How to hack credit cards and get free miles Maneesh creating the Pavlok shocking wristband that tracks and eliminates bad habits. 57: Brett Veinotte interviews me - school sucks, so be a successful dropout

Man, I really enjoyed this conversation with Brett! I don't often share interviews of myself personally, but I thought this one was really special. This is actually part 2 in a continuing series/collaboration between Brett Veinotte of School Sucks Podcast: The END of Public Education, and myself. Part 1 was me interviewing Brett and you can find that here. In this episode, Brett was supposed to be interviewing me for his audience, but it ended up turning into a lively conversation between the two of us. I enjoyed the heck out of it and so I decided to post it for the Successful Dropout community to enjoy as well.  Brett is such an awesome dude. We talk about everything from religion to budgeting and beyond: What does "living the dream" mean when someone says it with a scowl? 56: Going from 0 to 100 - solving health care with Successful Dropout Andrew Schneck

When Andrew Schneck was in college, he broke up with girls to spend more time in the library studying finance and long term investing. His interest in this led him to study more than half of the 3000 public companies in the US, attend shareholder meetings, and he even got in touch with a few billionaires. This activity put him on the map at his school as a hard working and budding entrepreneur. It wasn’t long until a college buddy’s father invited Andrew to join him in building a healthcare business. In 2016 Andrew went from 0-100 quickly as the healthcare business grew. It was really a pleasure to have Andrew on the show since we have been friends on social media for a long time now. He is very active in the Successful Dropout community, Facebook group, and in entrepreneurial circles as well. Love what he is doing to solve a huge problem through entrepreneurship!  In this episode we: Talk about the importance of relationships with close friends with whom you can go deep with, wrestle with tough questions, and call each other out. Talk about some tough periods in Andrew's life where he dealt with health issues that held him back. Talk about all the disparities within the healthcare system and what Andrew and his partner are doing to combat these. Talk about a ton more! My favorite quote from Andrew: "Society tells you, 'hey you're supposed to row the boat, you're supposed to row it here, you're supposed to row across the lake etc'...and then you look down and the boat is actually a skateboard and you're like, 'what the hell is going on?'" FAF: Why I say "stay hungry, stay foolish" after each episode

This is actually another old episode that I decided to resurrect. Again, it has too few downloads and it's such an important concept! For several months I put out content that barely anyone listened to, and now that there's actually a substantial audience I don't want people to miss some of the great content from the earlier days. I'm especially fond of this episode because it explains my reasoning behind signing off every blog post and episode with "stay hungry, stay foolish". 55: Re-examining your idea of success with Jimmy Tomczak

*My apologies for the audio here guys...not sure what happened. Guess I should have gone to college for audio engineering. Dang it. ;)* Jimmy Tomzak lives to inspire. He's launched multiple creative ventures, commercialized inventions, and built a rich network of personal and professional relationships. His work has earned awards including recognition as a Crain's Detroit Business 20 in their 20's honoree, a Maker Faire Blue Ribbon, plus honors from organizations like the Elks National Foundation where he was named Alum of the Year. Jimmy has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Entrepreneur Magazine, CNN and other prominent media. His new book, "Lakeside & Tide", hit top 100 on Amazon Kindle and #1 in its category. Jimmy is an author and speaker who tells his story to audiences internationally. He recently gave the TED talk, "Living Your Best Life Now Starts Today." I loved talking with Jimmy. In this episode we chatted about what success really means to both of us, and how many people have ideas in their head of what success looks like to them without putting much thought into whether or not they will actually enjoy and be fulfilled by that idea of success. What if making a million dollars a year isn't REALLY what you want? What if everything you ever wanted in life could be achieved earning only $100,000 a year? What if instead of setting financial goals, you set lifestyle goals? How much free time do you want to have? What kind of work do you want to do? WHO do you want to spend your time with and HOW do you want to spend your time?  What if your idea of success is more inspired by what society thinks than what you would ACTUALLY enjoy and find fulfilling for yourself?  It's an important question to wrestle with.  Resources: Jimmy's website Lakeside & Tide - Jimmy's book Pretty sure this was the Quora question Jimmy was talking about THANK YOU! 54: Dropping out to recycle worm poop - building a 7-figure company with Tom Szaky

Tom Szaky is the Founder and CEO of TerraCycle, one of the world’s leaders in eco-capitalism and the reuse of non-recyclable, pre and post-consumer waste. In 2002 he left Princeton University to spend all his time growing TerraCycle, which began as a two-man outfit out of his dorm room. Since then Tom and and TerraCycle have experienced great success. In 2010, TerraCycle was named the #288th fastest growing privately held company in America by Inc. Magazine and in 2016, Fortune magazine listed TerraCycle as one of “7 World-Changing Companies to Watch.”...among many other awards, publications, and successes. I didn't think I could ever get excited about garbage, but Tom's passion is contagious and his ingenuity is inspiring. One of my favorite quote from Tom (slightly paraphrased): "Entrepreneurship is a mountain of failure, and the outside - the crust of the mountain is the success, and the more you take risks and the more you inevitably fail, the more success you'll end up having. We usually only see the entrepreneur on the outside because that's what the magazines talk about, but we don't see all the failures that led to that point." 53: School sucks - how to achieve individual liberty with Brett Veinotte

Brett Veinotte has worked in education for the last 17 years, in a variety of capacities. Most recently, he was the vice president of a tutoring and educational consulting company in New Hampshire. Brett began working as a counselor and outdoor educator at a boarding school in Vermont in 2000, and was eventually promoted to lead teacher of a specialized campus. He then taught at a private day school in Manchester, Vermont from 2004 to 2006, where he designed new curricula for all classes he taught, including American History, World History, Media Ethics, Film History and a variety of mathematics courses. He completed masters level coursework in educational leadership, and the secondary education certification program at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. After leaving classroom teaching in 2006, Brett began to work exclusively as a private tutor in the greater Boston area. Much of this work was related to standardized test prep but also included providing essay writing support to college applicants, leading training sessions for prospective teachers planning to take state certification exams and serving as a liaison between parents and public schools to address student needs and parent concerns. I discovered Brett through the School Sucks Podcast and Youtube channel where he teaches thousands of people the art of self-education, critical-thinking, self-knowledge, personal growth, and a whole lot more. Loved chatting with this guy!  Here are a few of the things we discussed: Thoughts on career, college and School Sucks Above the Snowflakes? the current college culture the future of higher education The student loan bubble and the "college is necessary" bubble Aesthetic diversity versus intellectual diversity The consequences of social engineering in college Live off campus! 52: The importance of introspection and the power of peers with Gautam Bhargava

Gautam is the founder of Peeyr.com, a peer education marketplace that connects top high-school and college students to their peers for in-person tutoring sessions. He's a high-school dropout on a mission to create more opportunity within our education system and help students find their passion. Previously, he launched satus.org, a "How to Start a Startup" program for young founders and was a partner at Ankorhem, a product design agency based in Dallas. He's 19 years old. Gautam is another Successful Dropout who is changing the way we educate ourselves. I had an absolute blast chatting with him and I love the "why" behind everything he does. Everything he's built, he's built to solve a problem or challenge that he himself experienced...I think that's the essence of entrepreneurship - building creative solutions to solve problems, and the best way to do that is to solve your own problems. Here are some of the topics we cover in this episode: Can entrepreneurship be taught? Gautam cheating on a test and how it changed his life - great story! The ridiculousness of teachers unions Competing in the closed formal education system Permission versus freedom mentality The ABSOLUTE importance of introspection, examining your thoughts and experimenting at an early age A bunch more! 51: Lessons from a six-figure earning blue collar worker with Dallas Swain

Dallas Swain dropped out of High School at the age of 17 and had to pull himself up by the bootstraps to live. Even running miles between jobs. Throughout it all, he has remained determined, knowing the only thing that could hold him back was himself. Dallas now works full time in North Dakota as a maintenance contractor and he has worked his way up through the skilled labor force without a high school degree. At 23 his future looks bright with big plans for the future as he lays the groundwork for his new business.  I enjoyed this episode because Dallas is really the first "blue collar" guest we've had on the show. He's a great example of the fact that you can have a lot of success in the skilled labor and trade industries without a college degree or even a high school diploma. It was great to chat with him because one of my first jobs and eventually my first business was in the trades, so we had that in common. I notice that a lot of people tend to shy away from blue collar work, or they view it as less desirable than, say, working at a startup. But there is a lot of value in learning a trade, and if you enjoy hands-on work plus instant and tangible results, you would probably enjoy a career in the trades, and developing a great career here is very possible!

FAF: Why valedictorians rarely become millionaires with Eric Barker

Eric is a former philosophy student and screenwriter and an accomplished writer and researcher. He is best known for his blog Barking Up The Wrong Tree, which has been around since 2009. Much of the blog’s popularity is due to how useful it is to people and there are currently just under 300,000 subscribers to Eric’s newsletter. His blog topics typically revolve around  science-based answers and expert insight on how to be awesome at life. I shared a post of Eric's on my FB recently. The post followed 81 valedictorians after graduation to see where they ended up. It sparked an interesting debate in the comments and so I decided to invite Eric on the show to talk about his findings.

50: Not knowing the answer is the key to success with Rainesford Stauffer

Rainesford Stauffer is a 23-year-old writer who has been published by Forbes, USA TODAY, and The Hill, among others. After a diverse high school education, she dropped out of college her freshman year and spent two years shaping her own education through internships, writing, and communications. She's given two TEDx Talks and serves on the Advisory Board of (south by south west EDU) SXSWedu. For her day job, she works in communications, and is the editor of Gap Year Stories, a platform that publishes student perspectives on shaping your own learning experiences.  Rainesford and I have a lot in common with our mindset around education and entrepreneurship...she also owns a hot yoga studio, which is one of the businesses I own as well. In this episode we talk a lot about uncertainty, not knowing the answer, anxiety, and how messy and unclear times are actually the key to finding your way, learning, and ultimately success.  There are so many quotable snippets in this episode, Rainesford is the real deal - a go-getter, a self-teacher and an entrepreneur. She's the epitome of a Successful Dropout.  "Usually when you are shaping your own path, it's a combination of belief in something that matters to you, incredible amounts of effort, and just the right amount of risk." "Sometimes the greatest opportunities, moments and endeavors in your life are really messy. They aren't cookie-cutter, they aren't picture perfect and to me I think that's the magic of it."

Kylon helps us learn a couple new words he made up that allow us to understand what type of credentialing we are pursuing, and which type is best. Don't get lost in the weeds here. The basic idea to remember is that direct-credentialing is always better than indirect-credentialing.

Hillary is a writer from Walla Walla, WA who loves saving money.
