About
Traditional ideas of masculinity are dead, and now men struggle to find their place in the world. In Stories of Men, Alex Melia speaks to men who’ve overcome challenging circumstances to find out what they’ve learned about being a man in today’s world. Alex Melia is a businessman and podcaster. From humble beginnings in Greater Manchester, he built a business which now employs over 30 people. Ten years in, and the company sustains him without his involvement. He now travels the world on a mission to uncover what it means to live an independent and meaningful life - and wants to help others from similar backgrounds do the same. This podcast was previously Our Voices. We switched to sharpen our focus on where we can make a bigger difference. The 9 seasons we covered were: 1: Our Voices in the NHS 2: Our Voices at the Olympics 3: Our Voices Through Lockdown 4: Our Voices on Climate Change 5: Our Voices on Racism in the UK 6: Our Voices Celebrating Women in the UK 7: Our Voices on Living With Disability 8: Our Voices Role Models 9: Our Voices on Men & Masculinity

Is there a manly way of dealing with the death of a loved one?

It was a day as ordinary as any other. Luke was taking a leisurely stroll to the shops when he began to feel the strangest of sensations. He felt time beginning to slow down. He experienced a feeling of entering a parallel universe, a place where reality no longer existed. He was fighting a battle against his own sense of truth, a truth he had known for years. The cause of these feelings was a car he had just witnessed of a very specific model. The colour was the same, as were the wheels and trim. Luke craned his neck in order to see the number plate. Would that be the same too? Could it be that the person he had thought he had lost forever had returned?Today we focus on the powerful impact of grief, how it can affect us, and what men can do to process these intense feelings.Alex Melia, and the Stories of Men team are on a mission to uncover what it means to live an independent and meaningful life. Why a journalist went to extreme lengths to get his father’s approval

David was exploring the world while scaling the heady heights of multi-sports journalism. In only his second “proper job” post-university, he found himself unexpectedly appointed editor of a new magazine specialising in all-terrain vehicles. Where is my dad? How absent fathers shape men

Battling with reality to bring back the people we love

It was a day as ordinary as any other. Luke was taking a leisurely stroll to the shops when he began to feel the strangest of sensations. He felt time beginning to slow down. He experienced a feeling of entering a parallel universe, a place where reality no longer existed. This week we hear the story of Dina. She is an Iranian refugee who has had contrasting experiences of living abroad. She discusses the way in which she has been both brutalised and embraced in her adopted countries and her experience of racism in the UK.Life in IranDina grew up in Iran during the mid ‘80s. It was a time of revolution and, as a result, she had “a tumultuous childhood”. There were, however, positive memories of that period too. Dina remembers the time spent together as a family, at her grandparents house. With her grandfather’s rambling stories and her grandmother’s epic feasts. It was a happy time. A magical experienceYet, at 6 years old, Dina had the chance to travel to the UK. Her aunt, Who lived in London, was getting married. The plan was for Dina to spend a few months in London and then return to Iran after the wedding. Dina reflects on the “storybook houses” she saw in London and she speaks with great excitement about being able to eat fresh bananas for the first time. The confectionery of the UK was something she also appreciated. She describes Maltesers as “a miracle of culinary perfection.” She says being in London was “magical because it was so Western…so foreign”. During this time, Dina’s mother would convert to Christianity..... *********************Check out the Stories Of Men website for more on this storyWe're also on Facebook, Twitter and InstagramA Fascinate Production
