It got me thinking back to my struggle with self-improvement/self-help Christianity and how it led me down a path entirely focused on myself. The "that" Christian girl content is often accompanied by phrases like "become the best version of yourself," I want to unpack why I think this idea can be a slipper slope for those of us who struggle with becoming some idealistic Christian girl. I wanted to be the best version of myself, be the healthiest me I could be. This pursuit only led me farther away from Jesus and more and more self-centered. It turns out that self-help culture consequently creates a self-focused and self-driven mentality that often leads us away from the cross of Christ. In 2014 I started my healthy food journey and developed an unhealthy relationship with food after trying to cure hormonal acne and become a health nut. I got Facebook when I was 14 years old, Instagram when I was 16, and Snapchat shortly after that. After over 10 years of being on social media, I finally decided to quit for good.
