The 11th Commandment: Thou Shalt Be Nice | Ep 273

Modern-day Christianity is plagued with the falsehood that Christians have an obligation to be nice. Perhaps nobody has pointed this out better than Voddie Baucham When most Christians discuss any hot-button issues, it is filled with endless disclaimers and apologies for the truth we find in Scripture. This video of Mike Todd provides a prime example of this. This video of Lecrae is another great example. In today's episode, we will dissect these videos and talk through some of the reasons why we constantly see apologizing on behalf of God rather than proclaiming God's truth from the pulpit and stage. How We Solve the Catholic Man Crisis w/ Fr. Jonathan Meyer | Ep 272

The Catholic Church has seen a steady decrease in mass attendance among the general population, but especially among men. Why is it so hard to for the Church to retain boys and men? Why is religion not appealing to men anymore? One theory provides four main causes: 1) There is no challenge coming from the average pulpit 2) Most parishes and Dioceses have an emasculated organizational culture 3) Ugly liturgical practices - as we lost our tradition, we also lost a great deal of our beauty in Catholicism 4) Parishes have no brotherhood - there is little to no fraternity in the average Catholic parish In today's episode, Fr. Meyer and Nathan talk about how they believe we can right the ship and begin bringing men back into the faith. To learn more about the E6 Men's Conference, click here! Does the Bible teach "Mutual Submission" between husband and wife? | Ep 260

According to many modern-day Catholics, the Bible's instruction for husbands and wives is to be mutually submissive to one another. I had heard this interpretation of Ephesians 5 numerous times. Having actually read the entire book of Ephesians multiples times myself, I was always perplexed at how we came to these conclusions. One problem many Catholics have is being guilty of what Protestants accuse us of the most: not reading the Bible. If you've read the New Testament, it's hard to understand the direction for husbands and wives as anything close to mutual submission in the way it's often explained today. In this episode, we will take a deeper look at what Scripture, the Church fathers, and some doctors of the Church have to say about mutual submission. JOIN US FOR BOOK CLUB IT STARTS TODAY!!! Returning to God after a terrible sin | Ep 257

We have all felt unworthy at times. In my life, the hardest times to return to confession have been after knowingly doing the wrong thing. Ep 256 | Would you really go to war?

We often like to think of ourselves as being the type of people (especially men) who would give our lives if the time came for such a thing to happen. But would you really die for your faith? Would you go to war for your country? This doesn't have to mean going to the front lines to fight. There is plenty of fighting to do here at home. Ep 254 | The Story of Nathan Crankfield

This is the life story, the testimony, and the conversion story of Nathan Crankfield. It's been shared many times and in many places, but never has it been done so thoroughly, vulnerably, and transparently as this. For those who don't know, Nathan Crankfield was born and raised in Harrisburg, PA. He was baptized Lutheran, but entered the Catholic Church at age 13, becoming the first Catholic in his family. In 2015, he graduated from Mount St. Mary's University, where he received an Army ROTC Scholarship. After graduation, Nathan was commissioned and trained as an Infantry officer at Fort Benning, GA, where he completed U.S. Army Airborne School and Ranger School. Upon completion, he headed to Fort Bragg, NC, where he served in the 82nd Airborne Division for three years. After a deployment to Afghanistan, Nathan knew it was time to pursue his love for evangelization. Throughout his life, Nathan has cultivated a deep passion for encouraging others to fulfill their potential and purpose. In 2019, he accepted a position at the Dynamic Catholic Institute, where he faithfully served as a Parish Consultant for the archdiocese of Kansas City, MO & Austin, TX. Nathan served as a Resident Director at Benedictine College in Atchison, KS. He currently resides in Denver, Co with his wife; Emily and their son Jordan. Nathan currently serves as a Sales Lead for Hallow, the Catholic prayer & meditation app. The initial ideas around Seeking Excellence came to Nathan during his college years as he felt God calling him to serve the Church using his gifts for writing and speaking. While serving his parishes, Nathan dedicated consistent time to writing reflections to share within his community. When the mandatory stay-at-home orders went into place in the spring of 2020, Nathan received several cancellations for his booked speaking engagements. Much like all things Nathan does in his life, he decided to make the most of the situation by evolving. He moved his in-person events to a virtual platform, gaining new audiences and identifying our world's needs. Shortly after, Seeking Excellence launched with the support of Nathan's community and several friends who committed much time to help lay the foundation to bring his dream to life.  Nathan continues to cast a bold vision for Seeking Excellence while striving to build a strong alliance of community, which will help make a significant impact in the Church. Ep 251 | My Hottest Takes on Catholic Dating

We all know that Catholic dating is a trip. Many have diagnosed a wide range of different problems that have caused this fairly large population of discouraged and jaded young adult Catholics who sincerely want to get married but have not been able to find a spouse just yet. There have been a number of societal forces at play when it comes to the relationships between men and women. In today's episode, I assess those forces as I've seen them from my perspective. *Trigger warning* This episode has some hot takes and passion! I recorded it months ago and some of my views may have changed since then, but I hope this gets some good conversations going around the topic of Catholic dating! Ep 249 | Alex Jones | From Atheist to the CEO of Hallow

Alex Jones is an awesome man. He and I met almost ten years ago in a dorm room on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Little did I know that 7 years later I'd be working for his Catholic prayer app. There are several reasons this would have shocked me at the time, not least of which was the fact that Alex was an atheist on somedays and agnostic on others. Ep 247 | 'Be a Dumb Catholic'...Are you sure?

I recently saw a tweet from a priest that had a very unique message: Be a dumb Catholic. This seemed strange to me, but he did have a good point. The main idea was that we should strive to love God and the person in front of us above all else, including the pursuit of theological knowledge. It's easy to get to a place where you know ABOUT God but don't really know God in today's age of information. But is telling people to be a dumb Catholic really the solution the issues of our time? Ep 239 | The Best Christians Don't Complain

Stop complaining!! Nobody wants to hear it and it's not good for your soul! But seriously, we need a reality check. We ought to be grateful for the things we GET to do, rather than constantly complaining about all the things we HAVE to do. How about that new intro music by the way?? Ep 234 | Michaela Robinson | Do you really know Jesus?

This episode has been long overdue! Michaela Robinson is one of my favorite people in the world! Michaela is a wife, an expecting mother, and an amazing evangelist. She has taught me many things about life and spirituality, so I'm excited to share her wisdom with you today. Back in January, Michaela said something that really struck me. She mentioned how important it is to get to know the personality of Jesus. Immediately, I said, "we need to podcast about that". And this is that episode! Enjoy! Ep 232 | Men - You Need to be a Hero!

To support the podcast - join us on Locals Masculinity has been neutered. In an effort to escape the tyranny of toxic masculinity, we have made modern day men into cowards. Men are told to avoid danger, avoid strength, avoid boldness - to not be a hero. Men know that they have an innate, deep desire to do something great. They want to be a part of something bigger than themselves. They want to be strong, dangerous, and heroic. It's time we start to embrace that desire rather than run from it. Ep 231 | An Honest Review of Catholic Nonprofits and Self-Fundraising Models

If you're involved in the Catholic world, you know at least a handful of ex-missionaries. Almost all of us have contributed to the support of a missionary at one point or another. And for many of us, that experience brought along with it some, often unexpected, frustrations and concerns. Faithful Catholics are known to be kind. This means we often avoid saying things that we often think about but know could potentially offend others. This leads to a lot of silent majority opinions. We all just go along with the flow, refusing to ever question or doubt the way things are. I believe that needs to change in order for us to pursue a more excellent Church. We have to be willing to take an honest look at how we manage our finances. The call to tithing is not just a call to throw money at something that's Catholic and call it a day. Rather, it's a call to be generous with our time, money, prayers, and talents to help build up the Kingdom of God on earth, especially in the areas God has placed us. To me, this means that we ought to be working to spread the Gospel first and foremost in our families, in our parishes, and in our local communities. I think it's past time we take a look at some of the ways we give our money and to evaluate the organizations we give our money to. These organizations do good work. There is simply no denying that. But good companies still need accountability and reform from time to time, just like good people do. I hope that today's episode will help you to honestly evaluate the way you give money and how it affects your ability to take ownership for making a massive impact in your local community. Ep 230 | Theology on Tap: The Complex Morality of Capitalism

This is the recording of a talk I recently gave in person at Living the Dream Brewery in Littleton, CO. The talk was for a Theology on Tap event for St. Mark's Catholic Church in Highlands Ranch, CO. I was unable to publish the Q&A portion of the talk because I wasn't able to capture the questioners' audio with any decent quality. This episode is a preamble to next Monday's episode on Nonprofits and the call for reform in: 1) Our view of nonprofits as morally superior 2) Our view of being a "missionary" as morally superior 3) The current self-fundraising model used by many Catholic organizaitons Join us on Locals for more! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/seekingexcellence/support

Ep 229 | Extreme Catholics are the Popular Catholics

In our society today, the most divisive and extreme outlets get the most clicks and views. Ridiculous opinions are the best route to popularity. This doesn't only apply to political commentators. It also applies within the Church. It always saddens me that the non-Catholic world typically encounters two extremes of Catholicism. On the one hand, you have progressive Catholics like Fr. James Martin, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, and the like. On the other hand, you have the ultra-trad conservatives who preach endless negativity and a standard based on preferences disguised as requirements for holiness. The sad reality I've come to see as a content creator is that these two extreme groups have the easiest path to gaining support for their content. I've found this to be pretty discouraging. In today's episode, I share some of my experiences and some recent things that I've come across that support these distinctions. Ep 228 | John Frankman | Sacrificing Your Career on Behalf of Your Values

John Frankman is a Catholic man who loves the United States of America. After spending several years in seminary at Mount St. Mary's University, he joined the US Army as an Infantry Officer. I first met John at the Mount. We then met up again during our Infantry training as well as during our time in Ranger School. John went on to do much cooler things than I did, eventually becoming a green beret in the US Army Special Forces. John had plans for his next assignment at West Point. All of his hard work seemed irrelevant to his commanding officers as soon as he made one pivotal decision in the fall of 2020. He made a choice based on his conscience and filed a religious exemption that was denied by some and ignored by others. In today's episode, John shares his experience of having his career come to an end due to an unlawful and immoral order. To learn more, you can find John's content here. Ep 227 | Is it racist to not clap in Church? My response to the Black Catholic Project - The Ark and Dove

I was blessed to be a part of a project coming out of the Archdiocese of Baltimore titled "The Ark and Dove". The goal of the project was to highlight the different expereinces among different black catholics and to get our insight on different aspects of life in America. I personally thought the project was well done and very interesting. I did, however, have some serious objections to some of the things that were shared. Ep 226 | Stay at Home Dads: A Recipe for Awesomeness or Disaster?

Last weekend, I came across a short clip from Pints with Aquinas on YouTube that was titled, "Stay-at-home dads are AWESOME" But are they really? I took some of my thoughts to Instagram and quickly was met with feedback. Some people seemed to support the idea of stay at home dads while others were against it. Maddie Gramling and I first met through a Students For Life of America social media group. I was very impressed by how outspoken and bold she was on some of the most important issues of our time and in her apologetics for the Catholic faith. To describe Maddie as a firecracker would be an immense understatement. After her conversion to Catholicism, she wrote her family a bold and incredible letter that outlined her reasons for converting along with cited resources to support those reasons. Ep 215 | Fresh Fatherhood

As you may know, Emily and I welcomed our son, Jordan, into the world on April 22nd. I have been asked questions like, "what's your favorite part of fatherhood?" and "what's been your most surprising aspect of fatherhood?". I'm obviously new, but I've had a lot of time to think about these things during midnight rocking sessions and early morning bottle feeding. Today's episode is a reflection on what I've learned as a new father in the first 30 days. In this episode, I go through this article and add my own commentary from personal thoughts and my notes from class that show both the pros and cons of Capitalism and Socialism.   To support the podcast, join our Locals community. Ep 198 | Physical Excellence

The body is meant to teach us about the soul. In the Church, we often hear about how the body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and that we ought to take great care of our bodies. But why don't we? Christians aren't any more fit or healthy than the average population. But doesn't our faith teach us to be good stewards of the gift of our bodies? How did our society get to be as obese as we are? What does physical excellence practically look like? All this and more in today's show!  Help us reach 100 members, join our Locals community!!! Ep 195 | Emily Crankfield | Creating Healthy Boundaries in a Relationship

Last episode, we discussed the different subcategories of emotional excellence. The one we didn't fully get to cover was setting healthy boundaries in a relationship.  Boundaries are meant to both keep the good in and keep the bad out. They are needed in every form of relationship from friendships to the workplace to marriage.  In today's episode, Emily and I go through the book Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend, which you can purchase here. We also share some personal experiences where we have succeeded and failed in the realm of creating and maintaining boundaries in our different relationships.  For deeper content and discussion, join our Locals community. Ep 192 | Mental Excellence: Mental Health, Toughness, and the Importance of Learning

We live in a time in which mental health is prioritized, often times, above all else. Self-care has become a blanket statement for all things self-help, self-serving, and stress relieving.  We have an obligation to take care of ourselves, that is, to steward the mind, body, and soul (among other things) that God has entrusted to us.  I believe that the body has much to teach us about the mind and soul. The way we care for our bodies and physical health comes down to three major things:  nutrition, exercise, and rest. Our culture tells us that mental health is solely dependent on rest. I think that's nonsense.  In today's episode, you'll hear about the fitness, rest, and nutrition needed for a healthy mind.  Be your best!  This is Episode #192 of the Seeking Excellence Podcast. Ep 190 | What's the best way to live?

Every day billions of human beings wake up and take on life. We make thousands of decisions that ultimately reveal what we value, what we believe, and what we prioritize. These decisions are best guided by a code of ethics, a philosophy, or a rule of life.  But most people don't ever take the time to truly consider what it means to live life well. We just haphazardly go about our every day life without much direction or purpose.  Seeking Excellence exists to change that. I want you to be on fire for life. I want you to find the reason why you are here. And I want you to experience all that life has to offer when you give it your best.  I'm two years and 190 episodes into podcasting, but I felt it was time to revisit the fundamentals of what a lifestyle of Seeking Excellence really looks like. In this episode and for the next 7 Mondays, we will take a deeper look at what excellence looks like in all the major areas of our lives.  I hope you're ready for a great year!  For deeper content and discussion, join our Locals community. Ep 189 | The Damage of Divorce

Divorce is one of those very sensitive topics that the Church has an obligation to address. However, we almost never hear the Church's teaching on divorce.  Why is that?  I believe it's because divorce has been so normalized in the culture that Church leaders are afraid to touch it. This often leads to confusion and ambiguity on a very clear teaching as well as a neglect toward the children who suffer the trauma of their parents' divorce.  Divorce today is viewed as a breaking of a contract. It's viewed as two adults voluntarily making a decision that's best for them. It leaves the kids confused, hurt, and in a broken home.  I recently went on a retreat with Life Giving Wounds that focuses on healing for adult children of divorce. This episode is a summary of the Church's teaching on divorce as well as some reflection on my take aways from that retreat.  If you find this episode useful as a child of divorce or a friend of someone who is, please share this episode with another person who would benefit from this often ignored topic!  This is episode #189 of the Seeking Excellence Podcast hosted by Nathan Crankfield Follow Nathan @nathancrankfield on Instagram To support this podcast, please subscribe and leave a 5 star review!

Ep 188 | God or Government: What's the solution?

In light of the recent shooting in Colorado Springs, there have been many online debates about who is responsible for such acts of violence and what solutions we as a society should try and implement to prevent future attacks such as this one.  If you follow me on Instagram, you have probably seen me sharing tweets from AOC, posts from the NYT, and a post from another Catholic influencer. All of these insinuated, implied, or presented premises that lead to the conclusion that the Church's stance on same-sex marriage and gender theory contributes and/or leads to violent attacks against the LGBT community.  I debunk all such nonsense and cite several strong sources against the foolish idea that Catholics can or should support Socialism or big government in any form.  Here are some links for your own review:  Definition of Socialism The last four Popes on Socialism Economic freedom rankings by country  Is Sweden a socialist country?

Ep 184 | The Most Important Election Of All Time

This is episode #190 of the Seeking Excellence Podcast hosted by Nathan Crankfield Every two years, we hear the same message:  "This is the most important election of our lifetime". Some even pushed the idea that "Democracy was on the ballot", implying that we'd see the death of Democracy should the wrong party take the majority in the House and Senate.  On the other hand, we had major political players, like former President Donald Trump, who carelessly denigrated the nominees within their own party, which proved to be a losing strategy.  Was last week as crucial as some say? What should we, as Catholics and people seeking lives of excellence, really prioritize and focus on coming out of election week?  I discuss all this and more in today's episode!

Ep 182 | American Exceptionalism

Is America an exceptional country? Most political commentators have very strong opinions on this topic. We know that America, along with the rest of the West, has been demonized over the last few decades and especially in recent years. America has a plethora of ugly events, policies, and moments in its past. There's no denying that.  But does that remove any possibility that it stands out among other nations and empires in human history? Today, we take a look at some of those opposing views, evaluate some of the founding documents, and try to determine whether or not America is exceptional as some claim.

Ep 167 | My Conversation With An Socialist Ex-Catholic

Recently, I was on a flight and had the pleasure of making a new friend. After talking for a brief while, I learned that she was raised (somewhat) Catholic and had even gotten her two kids baptized in a Catholic Church.  However, she told me that she currently believes in the Universe, manifestation, and other "spiritual but not religious" types of things.  What's more, she also expressed her distaste for Capitalism and her position that she considers herself more of a Socialist.  As you can imagine, we had a great, in-depth conversation around a number of important topics.  In today's episode, I detail our conversation including things I learned I learned from her, things I taught her, and some general thoughts on how we can have civil conversations even when we disagree.  This is episode #167 of the Seeking Excellence Podcast hosted by Nathan Crankfield. Ep 163 | Do Most People Go To Heaven?

Seeking Excellence Podcast #163 Do most people go to Heaven? I think the world is pretty split on that question. Many of us think that at least most good people go to Heaven? But what does that really even mean?  Will I go to Heaven? That is the question we should be most concerned about. But that leads us back to the original question. If most people go to Heaven, then I'd say my chances are pretty good. If, on the other hand, most people do NOT go to Heaven, then I better evaluate my life and try to gauge where I'd end up if I were to die today.  The Catholic Church (and Christ Himself) has much to say on this topic. Today, we take a deep dive into this urgent and necessary question!  Follow us on Instagram @seekingexcellence_ and @nathancrankfield Find out more at our website Be your best!

Ep 161 | An Interview with Catholic Magician Giancarlo Bernini

Giancarlo Bernini is a Catholic magician. You read that right - my dude is both Catholic AND does magic shows for a living. I got to see him perform in Dallas back in December then again in February in Colorado. The guy is no joke. He's been featured on Penn and Teller's hit tv show Fool Us and has performed in stadiums and venues across the country.  Using the art of illusion, Giancarlo shares a unique perspective on faith and what it means to seek Truth.  His Catholic faith, BA in Religious Studies, and love of apologetics have allowed him to create a program tailored to Catholic audiences. We had a great conversation around random things like "What does the day to day life of a full time magician look like" to the importance of excellence in your profession when it comes to evangelization.  Follow Giancarlo on Instagram @berninimagic and check out his website here for more!!

Ep 160 | Is Adulting Actually Hard?

If there's anything that we can all agree on it's that growing up is not easy. There's so much to learn when it comes to handling adult responsibilities, and many of us find ourselves unprepared and under developed once we get out into the real world.  But is "adulting" really as hard as we make it out to be? Today's episode takes an honest look into that question and lays out several ways we can practically make the adult life easier and more fulfilling!

Between 30-40% of Americans make New Year's Resolutions each year.  Around 3% of Americans actually have written their goals down.  Only about 1% of Americans review their goals on a regular basis.  You may not look at your goals daily, weekly, or even monthly, but today is a great day to take stock of your progress toward your goals for 2022. In this episode, I will talk you through some goal-setting mindset and give examples of how my wife and I set goals and track our progress toward achieving them.  Be in the top 1%. The Pain of Miscarriage w/ Sarah Dougherty

Processing the loss of an unborn child is incredibly difficult. As Pro-Life people, we understand the weight of the death of a baby in a womb in its totality, which makes the grieving process all the more brutal and real.  Sarah Dougherty is the amazing wife of Bob Dougherty, who was the best man at my wedding. She is a graduate of Princeton University, a rockstar in the workplace, a convert to the Catholic faith, and one of my best friends.  She opens up to share both her incredible conversion story as well as the painful tale of her miscarriage at 20-weeks pregnant.  Shortly after learning of their miscarriage, Emily and I found out we were pregnant. And just a few short weeks later, we miscarried as well.  This is certainly one of the most vulnerable and powerful episodes I've ever done. I pray that it helps someone out there in their process of grieving and will help others to understand what they can do to help those going through the process.

Ep 153 | Battling Addiction to Pornography feat. Julia Hoyda

Addiction to pornography is a growing epidemic in our country and around the world. These alarming statistics have only gotten worse over the last decade: Pornography is very prevalent in our society, and porn addiction affects about 5-8% of adults. People addicted to porn spend at least 11 to 12 hours per week viewing porn. Most people who have a porn addiction say that porn hurts their personal relationships. Many conditions co-occur with porn addiction, including anxiety, depression, sex addiction, social anxiety and substance use disorders. What can you do to battle addiction to pornography or help others who are facing that battle themselves? Find out in today's episode with my friend Julia Hoyda.  Julia is a PhD candidate in neuroscience at the University of Cincinnati. She is a cradle Catholic born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago. She is a graduate of Hillsdale College and the Associate Director of Special Projects for Magdala Ministries, a rapidly growing organization that helps women battle sexual addictions.

Ep 150 | Confront Your Fears

Turns out that for Episode 138, I accidentally posted the audio to a previous episode...ooops!  Here is the episode that was supposed to be posted back on April 25th!  This is the old caption that still applies:  Integrity and Respect. We almost always look at integrity and respect in regards to our relationship to others. We desire the people we know, and even the people we don't know who know of us, to determine that we are people of integrity and worthy of their respect and admiration.  But what about self-respect? Violating your own integrity is more damaging, in many ways, to your view of yourself than the view others have of you.  The world today tells you to always accept yourself as you are. That you are perfect and wonderful and there's no need to strive for anything, no need to change.  But you know that's bullshit. So today we are talking about the need to face your fears. We're talking about avoiding things that you hate, the things that make you dislike yourself. Creating a life worth of respect, especially self-respect, requires both saying yes to the things we ought to do and no to the things we shouldn't do.  If you like today's episode, please share it with someone else who might benefit from it. Ep 147 | Are We Too Harsh On Pro-Abortion Catholics?

I recently had a friend of mine gracefully challenge me about a story I posted on Instagram which read "You cannot be Catholic and Pro-Choice". What I really meant was that you cannot be Catholic and pro-abortion, but I think that was sufficiently clear.  We often hear the more tolerant side of Christianity voice opinions that some of us are too judgmental and harsh on those who disagree with us on certain social and political issues. What many fail to realize is that at their core these issues are not simply about politics and society, but more importantly they are rooted in morality.  And morality matters. Our understanding of morality and our willingness to live in accordance with it ultimately determine the eternal destiny of our soul.  So are we too harsh on pro-abortion Christians? Can you really be Catholic and pro-choice? I share my answers to these questions in today's episode.  *Note*: This episode was recorded before Archbishop Cordileone made his statement regarding Nancy Pelosi receiving Holy Communion. I support that decision and some of the content from today's episode is relevant to that, but does not explicitly discuss it since I did not know about it at the time. Ep 143 | Catholic Influencers

About a month ago, there was a very interesting blog released from the truly excellent Catholic ministry The Young Catholic Woman. This blog was titled Why I unfollowed you: An open letter to Catholic influencers. Knowing that I, myself, have had a number of frustrations with popular catholics on social media and in the big time catholic speaker circle, you can assume that I was eager to read what the author had to say.  She broke down her reasons for unfollowing into three main categories. One I wholeheartedly agreed with, one I mostly disagreed with, and one was about 50/50. In today's episode, I break down her three reasons and share my thoughts on each of them. Disclaimer:  I have a great deal of respect and appreciation for the work that is done at The Young Catholic Woman. I also have no hard feelings toward the author of the blog, since I have never interacted with her in any way. I would have gladly posted this same blog on my own website, because I agree with many points that it makes and believe we have to be open to tolerating things that we may disagree with, so long as they don't lead people away from the Church or the Truth. Can you be Catholic and pro-abortion?  I try to tackle all these issues and more in today's episode. Enjoy the rant!

Ep 140 | In Defense Of...Pope Francis??

Like the vast majority of practicing Catholics, I have had a number of frustrations over the years with our Holy Father, Pope Francis. His ambiguity is frequently misrepresented and misinterpreted by secular media outlets with little to no effort from the Vatican or the Pope himself to actually clarify what he meant to say. The many occasions of such events have certainly inflicted damage both upon the lay faithful and the world's understanding of Church teaching.  In episode 85, I criticized Pope Francis' move to restrict the traditional Latin Mass in Amoris Laetitia. We were highly disappointed with this move to punish some of the most faithful and devout communities in the Church.  I recently read a book titled, What went wrong with Vatican II. The book was published some 24 years ago, but the points made by author Ralph McInerny were relevant to a number of issues I've had recently with what seemed to me to be excessive criticisms of the Pope. I have also recently been very moved by some personal conversations, prayer time, other podcasts, etc. that have changed the way I view the current papacy (to an extent) and many other issues in the Church today.  Today's episode takes you on a journey of my own developing understanding of the current Church climate. The vast majority, some 99%, is purely my opinion, so please keep that in mind.  I recently heard a guest on Jordan Peterson's podcast say, "your content should anger about 20% of your readers/listeners, but the goal is to not make it the same 20% every time". I hope and pray that whoever listens to this will do so with an open mind and a softened heart, with the willingness to embrace and even consider other points of view that might just help us restore unity in the Church. Ep 137 | How To Disagree And Not Hate Each Other w/ Jurell Sison

In today's world, people are literally encouraged to divorce their spouse if they voted for a different candidate in the last presidential election. We are suffering from terrible division that is carefully crafted by politicians, the media, and the devil himself.  Sure, there are things we want to strongly agree on as Catholics and Christians, but is it possible to still disagree and ALSO get along and be friends? Jurell and I have proven that we can.  We have disagreed on things from how the Church shares teachings on same sex attraction to how we should respond to the pandemic. Each time we disagree, we engage in thoughtful discussion in which we truly seek to understand one another. Through this discourse, we almost always realize we agree on much more than we disagree on.  This has a great deal to teach us about evangelization, unity, and how we can heal our nation and Church. Ep 131 | Next Level Self-Care w/ Erinn Black

We hear a lot about self-care these days. Mental health, fitness, taking breaks, and many other things are promoted as ways to care for yourself. And it's important! After all, you can't give from an empty cup.  But self-care and self-love don't always seem like they ought to be a priority in the Christian life. We know God doesn't want us to simply be miserable and neglect to take care of ourselves. However, we also shouldn't constantly put ourselves first and follow the selfish ways of the world.  Today, my friend Erinn joins me to talk about her journey of both healing and pushing herself to grow. Ep 129 | Chasing Humility w/ Joel Stepanek

Have you ever read the Litany of Humility? It's like a death sentence for your comfort and desires.  Humility is possibly the most important virtue. Well, financially speaking, those things are investing, increasing your income, and becoming wiser in how you use compound interest and other financial tools to your advantage.  To truly fulfill your potential, you’ll need the boundaries of a great defense and the courage to take pracitcal steps to develop a strong offense.    In today's podcast, I cover what you need to do to begin investing in multiple different types of assets. Ep 127 | The Diary of a High Achiever w/ Corey Singleton

Ep 126: The Average American Catholic

So often in life we see people settling for the minimum. Mass one day per week, putting in the least amount of effort at work, looking to fulfill, and never exceed, any expectations in relationships, etc.  What does it look like to be average? We've spent a few weeks now talking about what mediocrity looks like in mental health, physical health, personal finance, and job satisfaction. Today, we take a look at what it looks like to be an average Catholic in modern day America.  Spoiler alert:  it's not great I wasn't incredibly surprised by the stats I found, but it was still sobering to see the reality of the world we currently live in.  Follow us @seeking365 and @ncrank23 for more great content!

Ep 125 | Preparing To Die w/ Bridget Zurlinden

The CATO Institute conducted a study that concluded that 62% of Americans have political opinions that they are afriad to share.    Who can't relate to that? We've all got some opinions we are afraid to share. They could be in regards to faith, politics, and/or culture.   And many cave in to that fear. But shouldn't we embrace it instead? After all, it's one whole hell of a lot easier posting something on social media than it is standing up to serious oppression and opposition.    God calls us to stand firm in the truth. He wants us to have the courge to boldly proclaim the Gospel and defend the faith. Courage is built up over time. It doesn't just magically appear when you need it.    Bridget is a fantastic example of bold courage in sharing her views on what's happening in our world today. In today's episode, we talk about ways that we can prepare to be martyrs.    Follow her @accordingtobridget

In part two of this series, I dive deep into some stats regarding work, personal finance, and social justice.

Ep 123 | Fitness And Faith w/ Lindsay Fullerman

How do you maintain motivation to workout through the ups and downs of life?  How can you avoid the extremes of binge eating and excessive dieting, instead striving for a balanced, consistent, healthy lifestyle?  What role does mental health play in our physical health?  Lindsay Fullerman, founder of Fit From Faith, and I discuss all of these questions in today's episode. We also tackle the topics of fat shaming, modesty in the gym, and much more!  Follow Lindsay @fitfromfaith on Instagram! Lindsay received a Master's degree in Theology from Saint Mary's Seminary in Wickliffe, Ohio. She also holds an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology (BSc.) from Kent State University’s School of Education, Health and Human Sciences and a minor in Sports Administration. She is an expert in wellness coaching and habit change and also holds Strength and Conditioning, Sports Nutrition, and Pn2 Coaching certifications. While working as a fitness athlete and strength coach for nearly ten years, she struggled with her own body image, dieting, and living in extremes with food and exercise. It was only after developing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and understanding her Catholic roots that she began her healing journey towards interior freedom and balanced living.

Ep 122 | The Opposite of Excellence: Mental and Physical Health in America

What's the opposite of love? Elie Wiesel said that it is apathy. The opposite of love is not hate, but rather being indiffernt to the suffering, pain, or general existence of another.   What's the opposite of excellence? It's mediocrity. And what does mediocrity look like?    Over the next several weeks, we will be taking a deep look at modern day mediocrity. We will dive into the seven pillars of excellence to see what the life of an average modern day American looks like.    We start with physical and mental health today. We have serious and often neglected epidemics in both. And it's time we address them. Follow us on IG @ncrank23 and @seeking365 for more!

Ep 119 | Crucial Conversations w/ Emily Harpole

"A Crucial Conversation is a discussion between two people where stakes are high, opinions vary, and emotions run strong" -From the book Crucial Conversations   Almost nobody is really ever prepared when having a difficult conversation with a friend, parent, spouse, or someone in the workplace. We value these relationships, and yet when they are most in jeopardy (i.e. during crucial conversations), we leave it up to our instincts and chance.   This further leads to compromised boundaries, harbored anger, and suppressed emotions. These compound to make for great business for divorce lawyers and many other severed relationships.    Today, we talk about some pracitcal ways that you can better prepare for and execute in these critical relational moments. Emily joins the podcast to give some real life examples from our own relationship, as well as from other areas of our lives.    Be sure to check out the books we reference:  Crucial Conversations and Crucial Accountability! Ep 118 | Why Am I Conservative: The Unplanned Impact Of The Pro-Life Movement

My journey to becoming conservative was truly unplanned, much like the journey of Pro-Life advocate Abby Johnson. Abby once worked in a Planned Parenthood, all the while strongly advocating for abortion "rights".    In March of 2019, a movie was released called Unplanned, which documented her experiences of personally having abortions to witnessing them that ultimately led to her being a leading vocie in the anti-abortion movement.   That movie changed my life. It allowed me to see abortion as the leading issue of our time. Wanting to be a more educated defender of Life, I took to YouTube, books, and podcasts to learn more. Ep 116 | Why Am I Conservative: How Racism, Obama, and BLM Shaped My Beliefs

Grewing up, I knew the world expected several things from me as a young black man. One of them was the assumption that I would be a lifelong Democrat.    And for a while, I obliged.  I was a huge cheerleader of Obama in 2008. I registered Democrat when I turned 18 in 2011. In college, I argued liberal viewpoints against my conservative friends.   Even after college, I continued on this path of trying to persuade those around me that the Progressives had it right AND that their policies were more in line with Church teaching than those of the political right.    Well, all that changed. And today, I'm here to tell you why.    You can sign up for The Loop from CatholicVote here!!

Ep 114 | Catholic vs. Protestant: Does It Really Matter?

I've had many conversations with good Protestant friends of mine about the similarities between Catholics and all other denominations. The saying I hear most often is, "we all pretty much believe the same things anyway, right?"  Wrong.  That's a hard pill to swallow. It can be an even harder pill to administer. We don't like showing people where we are divided. We're divided enough, aren't we?  I agree that we don't need to be constantly running around calling people heretics and having theological debates, especially if we agree on most values and principles.  BUT there is a difference between Catholic beliefs and Protestant beliefs. And these differences are substantial. The differences impact our road to salvation, so they're important enough to share. In today's episode, I highlight some of those differences. This is Part Two of Catholic vs. Protestant, so be sure to check out the first episode if you haven't yet! Sign up for your free trial of Hallow Plus here! How does the government try to control us by manipulating our emotions?  How does EQ play into your life as a disciple of Christ? Ep 112 | Catholic vs. Protestant: Why Am I Catholic?

I was baptized Lutheran by my Lutheran mother and Baptist father before being sent to a Methodist preschool. In kindergarten, I was sent to a Catholic school. Eight years later, I chose to become Catholic and was confirmed in the faith.  I was only 13 when I became Catholic, so it was more of an emotional decision. I was moving toward what seemed more familiar. However, when I was in college, I decided to do a full evaluation of the Catholic faith. If I was going to be Catholic, I needed to know why.  Should we base our faith on Scripture alone? Should Church history matter? What is God's will in all of this?  In today's podcast, I explain the top reasons as to why I choose to be Catholic instead of Protestant.  This is part one. Ep 107 | Why Do I Curse So Much?

Many people have asked why I curse so much on a Catholic podcast. Many more have critiqued and complained about my direct style of challenging people's beliefs, assumptions, mindset, and lifestyles. Ep 105 | What Protestants Do Best

Recently, I wrote a blog about the relationship between personal finance and discipleship. It was the fruit of some reflecting on the years when I was a consistent follower of mainstream evangelical churches. Ep 103 | Investing In Yourself

This isn't some nonsensical rant about the importance of self-care, self-love, and/or self-prioritization. This is about doing the things that are necessary for bettering yourself for the sake of those around you. Giving of yourself until your totally drained and wasted isn't good for you or the ones you love and serve.  It's tempting to sacrifice what's best what seems good right now. A huge part of leading yourself (and leading others) is being able to rationally assess the circumstances in your life and decide what's needed most. Giving up the things that help us seek excellence, such as prayer, reading, exercise, budgeting, etc. for the sake of filling our emotional needs or those of others isn't a virtuous decision.  Don't be nice and mediocre. Be disciplined and excellent!  Be your best.

Ep 91 | Degenerates Are Closer To God Than Those Who Just Don't Care w/ David Calavitta

St. Maximillian Kolbe lived in the 20th century, the most violent and bloody century in the history of mankind. Through all of the evil he witnessed, he learned one thing for sure:  indifference is the greatest poison of our time.  We know that apathy makes you weak, unattractive, depressed, and cold. St. Augustine claims that "he who is lost in his passions is closer to God than he who has lost his passion."  David and Nathan discuss what that means for us today, why we should care more and worry less, and the ways that we can practically change our lives to live more fully.  David is an absolute rockstar! Ep 90 | Six Things I've Learned From A Year Of Seeking Excellence

1) Get started:  Things will never be perfect. You will always feel underprepared and unqualified. And there is no such thing as good or easy timing to do something challenging and rewarding.  2) Life is inconsistent and ever changing:  Don't fight the change, just learn how to adapt to it.  3) Put first things first:  Keep your priorities straight. Prayer, growth, fitness, relationships, and other massively important things can easily fall to the wayside.  4) Keep pushing:  You know life's going to be hard, so don't give up when it becomes difficult.  5) Set high standards:  We settle for mediocrity within the Church WAY too much and blame it on trying to be content with who/where we are. Strive for the goals that make you a little nervous.  6) Have a great team around you:  You aren't meant to do it alone, and quite frankly, you can't. So don't even bother trying. Ep 82 | Conversion, Complacency, and Charismatic Catholics w/ Graeson Dall

God is still working miracles in the world today. Many people today, even those who claim to be Christians, live their lives as what some call "practical atheists". To be a practical atheist means to believe in God but to live as though he doesn't exist.  We do this in a number of ways, from committing to live in sin to simply doubting in God's providence, grace, and mercy.  It is time we realize that Jesus is LIVING. And He wants us to follow Him. He said to the apostles that they would go on to do greater things than the what they had seen Him do, and He wants the same for us! Graeson shares his conversion story along with many stories of healings and other miracles he has witnessed. It is time to rise up and LIVE life abundantly.  Follow us @seeking365!

Ep 78 | How Catholics Should Respond to a Crisis w/ Bob Dougherty

We have all experienced a crisis in our life. We actually just experienced one together last year, during the height of the pandemic.  The only way to get rid of all your problems in this life is to die. So while we are here on earth, we know we will face unexpected adversity. It is better to know how to prevent and prepare for difficult situations than to scramble around trying to react to them after they happen. In this episode, Nathan and Bob take on the topic of leading ourselves and others through a crisis. To truly seek excellence, we have to be the ones who are willing to lead by example no matter the circumstances.  If you enjoy this episode, please share it with others. Ep 77 | Don't Be A Coward: The Need For Moral Courage In Today's World

General George Patton once said, "moral courage is the most valuable and usually the most absent characteristic in men." We need to change that. As Catholic Americans, we are members of the two most rebellious groups of people to ever live. Both Catholics and Americans have been willing to dies by the thousands in order to honor their beliefs, principles, and values.  Sadly, this is no longer the case. Your average Catholic American can hardly stomach the idea of ruffling any feathers or pushing back against the mainstream ideologies on topics that are central to our faith and our constitution.  It is our hope that this message gives you the inspiration needed to push back against the commonly accepted evils of our time. It's time to get in the game. The age of the virtuous bystander is over. Ep 74 | Don't Go Back to Normal: The Ugliness of Pre-Pandemic Catholicism w/ Fr. Jonathan Meyer

Only 30% of Catholics believe in the True Presence of the Eucharist.  Only 24% of Catholics go to mass every Sunday.  98% of Catholics use contraception.  How many consider themselves pro-choice? How many support cohabitation? How many are regularly viewing porn?  Sadly, this was our "normal" for Catholics before the pandemic. Maybe it's time we really reconsider whether we want to return to normal after all this is over.  Fr. Meyer shares all these stats and more as he and Nathan dissect the issue of the pre-pandemic Catholic apathy and lukewarmness. Ep 55 | The Biggest Problem With Men Today w/ Lucas Wollschlager

Good men create good times. Good times create weak men. Weak men create bad times. Bad times create good men.  And so it goes. Based on our recent podcasts on spiritual warfare, you know that we are in some bad times. This means we have had some generations of weak men before us that have created this mess. We can trust that, as the cycle states, it's time for good men to rise up. How can we do that? Well, we have to overcome the biggest problems and root causes of weak masculinity.  We've discussed The Feminine Genius on Ep 33 with Emily Harpole, and today it's time to get into some masculinity. We break down what we see as the biggest problem with modern day men, and it isn't toxic masculinity (although we discuss that too!).  If you like this episode, we challenge you to share it with 5 Christian men in your life.  Be your best!

Ep 50 | The Pro-Life Movement: Is the death penalty a distraction?

Between January 2020 and January 2021, the Trump Administration executed 13 inmates on death row. This drew a ton of national attention as the death toll outnumbered the previous 57 years combined. This, as usual, was an opportunity for people to use emotionally charged arguments to push their agenda.  The common claim was this: if you aren't anti-death penalty, you ain't pro-life. Is this true? Is this helpful to the pro-life/anti-abortion movement? Is it wrong to be a single issue voter? How should our faith influence our stances on these things? Ep 49 | Spiritual Warfare: A Call to Action

The battle for souls continues to rage on. We are losing people by the minute. We are under constant attack by evil through our culture, academia, politics, ideologies, and hate. Ripperger, a devout Catholic priest and experienced exorcist, on the state of the spiritual warfare taking place in our world today. It was incredibly insightful and eye-opening. I have seldom been more encouraged and inspired to be bold with our faith, take my personal holiness seriously, and to share the Gospel with the world.  It is my hope that this will inspire you the way that his message inspired me. You are capable, by the grace of God, of playing a major role in the battle of good vs. evil. It is time to accept our responsibility as disciples, soldiers, and ambassadors of Christ. Your thoughts, words, actions, and beliefs make a massive impact in our world, for better or worse.  If this helps you, please share with anyone who you think would also benefit from it.  To learn more, go to thosewhoseek.org and follow us @seeking365. St. Valentine's Day just passed, and for many people, it's a difficult time. It's easy to fall into the trap that if we are adults and single on the day of love, we have to be sad. But God wants more for us during our time of singleness.  Josie shares her perspective on love and her wisdom on how to make the most of our singleness and how to prepare for a beautiful future relationship.  To learn more about Fr Meyer's lenten program see below: RISE UP!  Grow in your relationship with God during Lent & Easter by listening to Fr. Ep 39 | The Dark Side of Feminism w/ Emily Harpole

Ep 28 | Man Without Vision Shall Perish Pt. 1 w/ Fr Meyer

We often ignore the wisdom found in Sacred Scripture. One timeless truth that is commonly neglected comes from the book of Proverbs, which states that without a vision, the people of a community will suffer and be lost.  We are all leaders in our own right. We first must learn to lead ourselves. We also lead in our families, our professional lives, and in our social circles. How can you begin to create a vision for all these different areas so that you and those entrusted to your care can truly flourish? Nathan and Fr Meyer discuss just that!  Part 2 of this two part series will be released Monday December 7th! To learn more, go to thosewhoseek.org and follow us @seeking365.

We all emulate other people. One of the most influential ways we learn behaviors, language, ways of thinking, etc. is by witnessing and copying the actions of others. Ep 23 | Are you on God's side?

Someone once asked Abraham Lincoln if he felt like God was on his side in the midst of the controversy, chaos, and confusion of the Civil War. President Lincoln responded by saying, "Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is being on God's side, for God is always right."  During this time of uncertainty, we need to be constantly evaluating whether or not we are on God's side. We have to recognize that we belong to God way before we belong to any political party. If anybody should be unified during this time, it should be the Church! The only way to be truly unified is to be on God's side. Let's discuss how we can do that!

Ep 13 | Why are we so judgmental??

Most people are walking around feeling inferior to someone else. It might be because of social media, or criticism from others, or just constant negative self-talk. The truth is that we all have some negative voice either externally or internally that tells us we aren't good enough. When we feel inferior to others, we often experience the urge to go find someone we can feel superior to in turn. And then comes the judging. We look down on other people and each other for the pettiest of reasons, just to make ourselves look and feel better. But we know we are called to higher living than this. Today, we are challenging you to take a hard look at who/what makes you feel unworthy and who you might be looking down upon as a result of that. We want you to experience true humility, i.e. seeing yourself as God sees you. Come and join us in this pursuit of personal excellence as we examine what makes us so damn judgy all the time. Ep 11 | How to Transition Without Losing Your Identity w/ Tori Sanders

Leaving college, ending your time in the military, playing your last game as an athlete, ending a long-term relationship, moving to a new city...these things plus many others present a unique challenge to us in life:  they leave us feeling like we lost a part of ourselves. We talked earlier this week about practical ways to deal with change in Episode 10, but today we're going to talk more about how not to lose your identity when those big changes occur.  I was blessed to be able to record this episode with my good friend and SE blog team writer, Tori Sanders. Ep 8 | Black and White Like Me feat. Bobby Angel (part 3)

How are Christians called to respond to the polarization of our nation? How should we respond to the rioting and looting of stores? How do we navigate the difficult conversations around these things and racism that must be had?  In part three of three, Bobby Angel and Nathan Crankfield walk through all of these things. Ep 7 | Remembering 9/11

For this episode, Nathan reflects on the tragic events that took place on September 11, 2001. These events altered all of our lives. There were some horrific things that happened that day, but as usual, in the midst of chaos there were some incredible displays of virtue.  When we are kids, we all want to be a hero. Sadly, as we grow older, we typically lose this desire to be bold in our service to others. This episode, which matches this week's blog post, is meant to challenge you to re-awaken the hero that is within you. Take time today to pray for and appreciate the heroes around us while also building up the courage to be the hero of your own story.  Read this week's blog post at thosewhoseek.org and follow us on social media @seeking365.  Have you enjoyed this episode? We are all called to be an example to others and to help them remove the obstacles that stand between them and fulfilling their full potential. It's time we take responsibility for this and begin to be intentional about growing our leadership skills.  Fr Jonathan Meyer is a consistent guest on the podcast. He serves as the pastor for All Saints Parish in Guilford IN. We highly recommend you check out his parish's YouTube channel to catch his weekly homilies. Fr Meyer also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for Seeking Excellence.  Head over to thosewhoseek.org to learn more about Fr Meyer, Nathan, and Seeking Excellence! Ep 3 | Black and White Like Me feat. Bobby Angel (part 1)

Back in June, Nathan began a three part series of written series on the current tension in America that came in response to racism being brought to our nation's attention once again. He writes from his perspective as a Catholic, biracial, Army veteran. The first letter is addressed to his white friends and family, the second to his black friends and family, and the third to Christians.  He and Bobby Angel decided to do a video series in which they discussed each letter one by one. This is part one of that series!  To find letter one:  https://www.thosewhoseek.org/blog/if-only-life-were-black-one Follow us on instagram and Facebook at @seeking365
