One of the terrible, and often true, stereotypes of Gen Z and Millenials is that of an entitled attitude. Young people today can be seen saying that they want to be able to work less and earn more than every generation before them - despite the fact that we currently live the most comfortable lifestyles in all of human history by a long shot. This flows in and out of a victim mindset - whereby young people blame all their financial problems on other people. The reality is that even if your situation is the result of other people's decisions, it's your responsibility to change it. There's a hard message in today's podcast. "If my husband was an NFL player, I could afford to stay at home too!!!" These sentiments have been spread far and wide as of late. We modern Americans love some victim mentality!! We love the option of just blaming privilege for another person's success, rather than taking accountability for our own lives. Are there some people who are genuinely sacrificing, working hard, and still unable to make ends meet on one income? Yes, there are. For the majority of college-educated Americans, however, the possibility of living on one income is much more in reach than they believe who lead others to believe. Most Americans don't budget. Most Americans spend wildly and choose not to save. Most Americans want to work less, not more. Most Americans expect a VERY high standard of living. Living on one income, for most of us, requires serious commitment and discipline. It is not for the weak or fainthearted. Perhaps nobody has pointed this out better than Voddie Baucham When most Christians discuss any hot-button issues, it is filled with endless disclaimers and apologies for the truth we find in Scripture. According to many modern-day Catholics, the Bible's instruction for husbands and wives is to be mutually submissive to one another. I had heard this interpretation of Ephesians 5 numerous times. Having actually read the entire book of Ephesians multiples times myself, I was always perplexed at how we came to these conclusions. One problem many Catholics have is being guilty of what Protestants accuse us of the most: not reading the Bible. This is the life story, the testimony, and the conversion story of Nathan Crankfield. It's been shared many times and in many places, but never has it been done so thoroughly, vulnerably, and transparently as this. For those who don't know, Nathan Crankfield was born and raised in Harrisburg, PA. He was baptized Lutheran, but entered the Catholic Church at age 13, becoming the first Catholic in his family. In 2015, he graduated from Mount St. Mary's University, where he received an Army ROTC Scholarship. After graduation, Nathan was commissioned and trained as an Infantry officer at Fort Benning, GA, where he completed U.S. Army Airborne School and Ranger School. Upon completion, he headed to Fort Bragg, NC, where he served in the 82nd Airborne Division for three years. After a deployment to Afghanistan, Nathan knew it was time to pursue his love for evangelization. Throughout his life, Nathan has cultivated a deep passion for encouraging others to fulfill their potential and purpose. In 2019, he accepted a position at the Dynamic Catholic Institute, where he faithfully served as a Parish Consultant for the archdiocese of Kansas City, MO & Austin, TX. Nathan served as a Resident Director at Benedictine College in Atchison, KS. He currently resides in Denver, Co with his wife; Emily and their son Jordan. Nathan currently serves as a Sales Lead for Hallow, the Catholic prayer & meditation app. The initial ideas around Seeking Excellence came to Nathan during his college years as he felt God calling him to serve the Church using his gifts for writing and speaking. While serving his parishes, Nathan dedicated consistent time to writing reflections to share within his community. When the mandatory stay-at-home orders went into place in the spring of 2020, Nathan received several cancellations for his booked speaking engagements. Much like all things Nathan does in his life, he decided to make the most of the situation by evolving. He moved his in-person events to a virtual platform, gaining new audiences and identifying our world's needs. Shortly after, Seeking Excellence launched with the support of Nathan's community and several friends who committed much time to help lay the foundation to bring his dream to life.  Nathan continues to cast a bold vision for Seeking Excellence while striving to build a strong alliance of community, which will help make a significant impact in the Church. Alex Jones is an awesome man. He and I met almost ten years ago in a dorm room on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. I recently saw a tweet from a priest that had a very unique message: Be a dumb Catholic. This seemed strange to me, but he did have a good point. The main idea was that we should strive to love God and the person in front of us above all else, including the pursuit of theological knowledge. If you're involved in the Catholic world, you know at least a handful of ex-missionaries. Almost all of us have contributed to the support of a missionary at one point or another. And for many of us, that experience brought along with it some, often unexpected, frustrations and concerns. Faithful Catholics are known to be kind. This means we often avoid saying things that we often think about but know could potentially offend others. This leads to a lot of silent majority opinions. We all just go along with the flow, refusing to ever question or doubt the way things are. I believe that needs to change in order for us to pursue a more excellent Church. We have to be willing to take an honest look at how we manage our finances. The call to tithing is not just a call to throw money at something that's Catholic and call it a day. Rather, it's a call to be generous with our time, money, prayers, and talents to help build up the Kingdom of God on earth, especially in the areas God has placed us. To me, this means that we ought to be working to spread the Gospel first and foremost in our families, in our parishes, and in our local communities. I think it's past time we take a look at some of the ways we give our money and to evaluate the organizations we give our money to. These organizations do good work. There is simply no denying that. But good companies still need accountability and reform from time to time, just like good people do. I hope that today's episode will help you to honestly evaluate the way you give money and how it affects your ability to take ownership for making a massive impact in your local community. In our society today, the most divisive and extreme outlets get the most clicks and views. Ridiculous opinions are the best route to popularity. This doesn't only apply to political commentators. It also applies within the Church. It always saddens me that the non-Catholic world typically encounters two extremes of Catholicism. On the one hand, you have progressive Catholics like Fr. James Martin, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, and the like. On the other hand, you have the ultra-trad conservatives who preach endless negativity and a standard based on preferences disguised as requirements for holiness. The sad reality I've come to see as a content creator is that these two extreme groups have the easiest path to gaining support for their content. I've found this to be pretty discouraging. In today's episode, I share some of my experiences and some recent things that I've come across that support these distinctions. John Frankman is a Catholic man who loves the United States of America. After spending several years in seminary at Mount St. Mary's University, he joined the US Army as an Infantry Officer. I first met John at the Mount. We then met up again during our Infantry training as well as during our time in Ranger School. John went on to do much cooler things than I did, eventually becoming a green beret in the US Army Special Forces. John had plans for his next assignment at West Point. All of his hard work seemed irrelevant to his commanding officers as soon as he made one pivotal decision in the fall of 2020. He made a choice based on his conscience and filed a religious exemption that was denied by some and ignored by others. I was blessed to be a part of a project coming out of the Archdiocese of Baltimore titled "The Ark and Dove". The goal of the project was to highlight the different expereinces among different black catholics and to get our insight on different aspects of life in America. I was very impressed by how outspoken and bold she was on some of the most important issues of our time and in her apologetics for the Catholic faith. As you may know, Emily and I welcomed our son, Jordan, into the world on April 22nd. I have been asked questions like, "what's your favorite part of fatherhood?" and "what's been your most surprising aspect of fatherhood?". I'm obviously new, but I've had a lot of time to think about these things during midnight rocking sessions and early morning bottle feeding. We live in a time in which mental health is prioritized, often times, above all else. Self-care has become a blanket statement for all things self-help, self-serving, and stress relieving.  We have an obligation to take care of ourselves, that is, to steward the mind, body, and soul (among other things) that God has entrusted to us.  I believe that the body has much to teach us about the mind and soul. The way we care for our bodies and physical health comes down to three major things:  nutrition, exercise, and rest. Our culture tells us that mental health is solely dependent on rest. Divorce is one of those very sensitive topics that the Church has an obligation to address. However, we almost never hear the Church's teaching on divorce.  Why is that?  I believe it's because divorce has been so normalized in the culture that Church leaders are afraid to touch it. This often leads to confusion and ambiguity on a very clear teaching as well as a neglect toward the children who suffer the trauma of their parents' divorce.  Divorce today is viewed as a breaking of a contract. It's viewed as two adults voluntarily making a decision that's best for them. It leaves the kids confused, hurt, and in a broken home.  I recently went on a retreat with Life Giving Wounds that focuses on healing for adult children of divorce. In light of the recent shooting in Colorado Springs, there have been many online debates about who is responsible for such acts of violence and what solutions we as a society should try and implement to prevent future attacks such as this one.  If you follow me on Instagram, you have probably seen me sharing tweets from AOC, posts from the NYT, and a post from another Catholic influencer. Recently, I was on a flight and had the pleasure of making a new friend. After talking for a brief while, I learned that she was raised (somewhat) Catholic and had even gotten her two kids baptized in a Catholic Church.  However, she told me that she currently believes in the Universe, manifestation, and other "spiritual but not religious" types of things.  What's more, she also expressed her distaste for Capitalism and her position that she considers herself more of a Socialist.  As you can imagine, we had a great, in-depth conversation around a number of important topics.  In today's episode, I detail our conversation including things I learned I learned from her, things I taught her, and some general thoughts on how we can have civil conversations even when we disagree.  This is episode #167 of the Seeking Excellence Podcast hosted by Nathan Crankfield. Jacob Imam was born to a Muslim father and a Christian Mother. He experienced division about faith matters with his parents and lived a secular lifestyle. After some powerful encounters with Christ, he decided to get baptized and then studied his way into the Catholic Church. Processing the loss of an unborn child is incredibly difficult. As Pro-Life people, we understand the weight of the death of a baby in a womb in its totality, which makes the grieving process all the more brutal and real.  Sarah Dougherty is the amazing wife of Bob Dougherty, who was the best man at my wedding. She is a graduate of Princeton University, a rockstar in the workplace, a convert to the Catholic faith, and one of my best friends.  She opens up to share both her incredible conversion story as well as the painful tale of her miscarriage at 20-weeks pregnant.  Shortly after learning of their miscarriage, Emily and I found out we were pregnant. And just a few short weeks later, we miscarried as well.  This is certainly one of the most vulnerable and powerful episodes I've ever done. I pray that it helps someone out there in their process of grieving and will help others to understand what they can do to help those going through the process. 

Addiction to pornography is a growing epidemic in our country and around the world. These alarming statistics have only gotten worse over the last decade: Pornography is very prevalent in our society, and porn addiction affects about 5-8% of adults. People addicted to porn spend at least 11 to 12 hours per week viewing porn. Most people who have a porn addiction say that porn hurts their personal relationships. Many conditions co-occur with porn addiction, including anxiety, depression, sex addiction, social anxiety and substance use disorders. What can you do to battle addiction to pornography or help others who are facing that battle themselves? Violating your own integrity is more damaging, in many ways, to your view of yourself than the view others have of you.  The world today tells you to always accept yourself as you are. That you are perfect and wonderful and there's no need to strive for anything, no need to change.  But you know that's bullshit. So today we are talking about the need to face your fears. We're talking about avoiding things that you hate, the things that make you dislike yourself. I recently had a friend of mine gracefully challenge me about a story I posted on Instagram which read "You cannot be Catholic and Pro-Choice". What I really meant was that you cannot be Catholic and pro-abortion, but I think that was sufficiently clear.  We often hear the more tolerant side of Christianity voice opinions that some of us are too judgmental and harsh on those who disagree with us on certain social and political issues. What many fail to realize is that at their core these issues are not simply about politics and society, but more importantly they are rooted in morality.  And morality matters. Our understanding of morality and our willingness to live in accordance with it ultimately determine the eternal destiny of our soul.  So are we too harsh on pro-abortion Christians? Can you really be Catholic and pro-choice? About a month ago, there was a very interesting blog released from the truly excellent Catholic ministry The Young Catholic Woman. This blog was titled Why I unfollowed you: An open letter to Catholic influencers. Knowing that I, myself, have had a number of frustrations with popular catholics on social media and in the big time catholic speaker circle, you can assume that I was eager to read what the author had to say.  She broke down her reasons for unfollowing into three main categories. One I wholeheartedly agreed with, one I mostly disagreed with, and one was about 50/50. In today's episode, I break down her three reasons and share my thoughts on each of them. Disclaimer:  I have a great deal of respect and appreciation for the work that is done at The Young Catholic Woman. I also have no hard feelings toward the author of the blog, since I have never interacted with her in any way. I would have gladly posted this same blog on my own website, because I agree with many points that it makes and believe we have to be open to tolerating things that we may disagree with, so long as they don't lead people away from the Church or the Truth. What a week! We're in for a great deal of controversy, debate, protests, and probably some riots. There will be absolute insanity for the next few months most likely.  The overturning of Roe v. Wade, what a momentous occasion. But is it too early to celebrate? Should Catholics be hesitant to support this move? What can we do to be on the right side of history? Like the vast majority of practicing Catholics, I have had a number of frustrations over the years with our Holy Father, Pope Francis. His ambiguity is frequently misrepresented and misinterpreted by secular media outlets with little to no effort from the Vatican or the Pope himself to actually clarify what he meant to say. The many occasions of such events have certainly inflicted damage both upon the lay faithful and the world's understanding of Church teaching.  In episode 85, I criticized Pope Francis' move to restrict the traditional Latin Mass in Amoris Laetitia. We were highly disappointed with this move to punish some of the most faithful and devout communities in the Church.  I recently read a book titled, What went wrong with Vatican II. The book was published some 24 years ago, but the points made by author Ralph McInerny were relevant to a number of issues I've had recently with what seemed to me to be excessive criticisms of the Pope. I have also recently been very moved by some personal conversations, prayer time, other podcasts, etc. that have changed the way I view the current papacy (to an extent) and many other issues in the Church today.  Today's episode takes you on a journey of my own developing understanding of the current Church climate. The vast majority, some 99%, is purely my opinion, so please keep that in mind.  I recently heard a guest on Jordan Peterson's podcast say, "your content should anger about 20% of your readers/listeners, but the goal is to not make it the same 20% every time". I hope and pray that whoever listens to this will do so with an open mind and a softened heart, with the willingness to embrace and even consider other points of view that might just help us restore unity in the Church. In today's world, people are literally encouraged to divorce their spouse if they voted for a different candidate in the last presidential election. We are suffering from terrible division that is carefully crafted by politicians, the media, and the devil himself.  Sure, there are things we want to strongly agree on as Catholics and Christians, but is it possible to still disagree and ALSO get along and be friends? Jurell and I have proven that we can.  We have disagreed on things from how the Church shares teachings on same sex attraction to how we should respond to the pandemic. Each time we disagree, we engage in thoughtful discussion in which we truly seek to understand one another. Through this discourse, we almost always realize we agree on much more than we disagree on.  This has a great deal to teach us about evangelization, unity, and how we can heal our nation and Church. We hear a lot about self-care these days. Mental health, fitness, taking breaks, and many other things are promoted as ways to care for yourself. And it's important! We know God doesn't want us to simply be miserable and neglect to take care of ourselves. So often in life we see people settling for the minimum. The CATO Institute conducted a study that concluded that 62% of Americans have political opinions that they are afriad to share.    Who can't relate to that? We've all got some opinions we are afraid to share. They could be in regards to faith, politics, and/or culture.   And many cave in to that fear. But shouldn't we embrace it instead? After all, it's one whole hell of a lot easier posting something on social media than it is standing up to serious oppression and opposition.    God calls us to stand firm in the truth. He wants us to have the courge to boldly proclaim the Gospel and defend the faith. Courage is built up over time. My journey to becoming conservative was truly unplanned, much like the journey of Pro-Life advocate Abby Johnson. Abby once worked in a Planned Parenthood, all the while strongly advocating for abortion "rights".    In March of 2019, a movie was released called Unplanned, which documented her experiences of personally having abortions to witnessing them that ultimately led to her being a leading vocie in the anti-abortion movement.   That movie changed my life. It allowed me to see abortion as the leading issue of our time. Wanting to be a more educated defender of Life, I took to YouTube, books, and podcasts to learn more. In college, I argued liberal viewpoints against my conservative friends.   Even after college, I continued on this path of trying to persuade those around me that the Progressives had it right AND that their policies were more in line with Church teaching than those of the political right.    Well, all that changed. I've had many conversations with good Protestant friends of mine about the similarities between Catholics and all other denominations. The saying I hear most often is, "we all pretty much believe the same things anyway, right?"  Wrong.  That's a hard pill to swallow. It can be an even harder pill to administer. We don't like showing people where we are divided. We're divided enough, aren't we?  I agree that we don't need to be constantly running around calling people heretics and having theological debates, especially if we agree on most values and principles.  BUT there is a difference between Catholic beliefs and Protestant beliefs. And these differences are substantial. The differences impact our road to salvation, so they're important enough to share. In today's episode, I highlight some of those differences. I was baptized Lutheran by my Lutheran mother and Baptist father before being sent to a Methodist preschool. In kindergarten, I was sent to a Catholic school. Eight years later, I chose to become Catholic and was confirmed in the faith.  I was only 13 when I became Catholic, so it was more of an emotional decision. I was moving toward what seemed more familiar. However, when I was in college, I decided to do a full evaluation of the Catholic faith. If I was going to be Catholic, I needed to know why.  Should we base our faith on Scripture alone? Should Church history matter? What is God's will in all of this?  In today's podcast, I explain the top reasons as to why I choose to be Catholic instead of Protestant.  This is part one. Life is hard. It's harder when you're weak hearted and fragile. The adversity we go through gives us an opportunity to grow in strength and wisdom, but it's not our default to actually improve through difficult situations. So how do we actually develop a mindset and outlook on life that allow us to grow through hardship? Find out all this and more in today's episode! 

This isn't some nonsensical rant about the importance of self-care, self-love, and/or self-prioritization. This is about doing the things that are necessary for bettering yourself for the sake of those around you. Giving of yourself until your totally drained and wasted isn't good for you or the ones you love and serve.  It's tempting to sacrifice what's best what seems good right now. A huge part of leading yourself (and leading others) is being able to rationally assess the circumstances in your life and decide what's needed most. Giving up the things that help us seek excellence, such as prayer, reading, exercise, budgeting, etc. for the sake of filling our emotional needs or those of others isn't a virtuous decision.  Don't be nice and mediocre. Be disciplined and excellent!  Be your best. 

We all know some people who just seek to immediately fill every desire they have. Perhaps, we even find ourselves grabbing that extra donut or spending some extra money when we really don't need to.  Delayed gratification is one of the greatest marks of a mature man or woman. Prayer, growth, fitness, relationships, and other massively important things can easily fall to the wayside.  4) Keep pushing:  You know life's going to be hard, so don't give up when it becomes difficult.  5) Set high standards:  We settle for mediocrity within the Church WAY too much and blame it on trying to be content with who/where we are. Strive for the goals that make you a little nervous.  6) Have a great team around you:  You aren't meant to do it alone, and quite frankly, you can't. So don't even bother trying. General George Patton once said, "moral courage is the most valuable and usually the most absent characteristic in men." We need to change that. As Catholic Americans, we are members of the two most rebellious groups of people to ever live. Both Catholics and Americans have been willing to dies by the thousands in order to honor their beliefs, principles, and values.  Sadly, this is no longer the case. Your average Catholic American can hardly stomach the idea of ruffling any feathers or pushing back against the mainstream ideologies on topics that are central to our faith and our constitution.  It is our hope that this message gives you the inspiration needed to push back against the commonly accepted evils of our time. It's time to get in the game. The age of the virtuous bystander is over. Only 30% of Catholics believe in the True Presence of the Eucharist.  Only 24% of Catholics go to mass every Sunday.  98% of Catholics use contraception.  How many consider themselves pro-choice? How many support cohabitation? How many are regularly viewing porn?  Sadly, this was our "normal" for Catholics before the pandemic. Maybe it's time we really reconsider whether we want to return to normal after all this is over.  Fr. Between January 2020 and January 2021, the Trump Administration executed 13 inmates on death row. This drew a ton of national attention as the death toll outnumbered the previous 57 years combined. This, as usual, was an opportunity for people to use emotionally charged arguments to push their agenda.  The common claim was this: if you aren't anti-death penalty, you ain't pro-life. The battle for souls continues to rage on. We are losing people by the minute. We are under constant attack by evil through our culture, academia, politics, ideologies, and hate. Someone once asked Abraham Lincoln if he felt like God was on his side in the midst of the controversy, chaos, and confusion of the Civil War. President Lincoln responded by saying, "Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is being on God's side, for God is always right."  During this time of uncertainty, we need to be constantly evaluating whether or not we are on God's side. We have to recognize that we belong to God way before we belong to any political party. If anybody should be unified during this time, it should be the Church! Failure is a part of life. We all go through it every single day. The more we strive for greatness and personal excellence, the more we risk and experience failure. When we feel inferior to others, we often experience the urge to go find someone we can feel superior to in turn. And then comes the judging. We look down on other people and each other for the pettiest of reasons, just to make ourselves look and feel better. But we know we are called to higher living than this.
