SALTY HUTNER SOLO #2: 58 MILER RECAP

This episode of the Salty Hunter Podcast I recap my 58 miler. This run signified more than just a run. It was more than just a long day in the mountains and on the trail. This was a statement. This was the affirmation that I am on the right track; and doing the hard right is better than the easy left. I won’t quit vs I don’t quit is a thought that popped into my head some time ago. It’s insight into the character of a person. If you give someone a task, or a goal to accomplish that seems reasonable, that person could easily tell you “I won’t quit”. That no quit attitude ends when the task or goal is completed. Their personal accountability, motivation, and incentive for accomplishment is gone. When you give someone that is driven a task, they look at you and say “I DON’T quit”. That speaks magnitudes more about their character. This tells you the fragility of their egos will not get in the way of what needs to be done. They are the one warrior Heraclitus quotes. This thought crept into my mind at mile 36.8. After I found out I was tacking on an extra 6 miles I was demoralized. Then I remembered: I DON’T QUIT. I changed my thought process from “I won’t quit on this run” to “I don’t quit. Ever.” I’m not going to blow smoke up your ass and tell you these words gave me superpowers and I ran the next 21 miles at break-neck speeds. It was still a grind. But I will tell you those words tempered my thoughts and planted a new seed. This seed has already sprung and begun to grow. Wait ‘til you see what I do next. Thank you all for listening. MOUNTAIN MAN: CHARLIE ESS

On this episode of the Salty Hunter Podcast I am honored to be speaking with Mr. Charlie Ess. Charlie has done a little bit of everything. Wanting to be a mountain man in the North country brought him to Alaska where he found himself wearing many hats. Commercial fisherman, hunting guide, trapper, writer, film-maker just to name a few. Not long ago he made his own bow under the mentorship of a local bowyer. He now spends his time shooting his bow and hunting the land right outside his home. This was a fascinating story to hear, It has a little bit of everything from boat building in Homer to commercial fishing in the Bering Sea to trapping in the Arctic during the winter. Charlie will be coming back on. He has probably forgotten more than I will ever know. I am honored to call him a friend. As always, thank you all for listening. I love every damn one of you. SALTY HUNTER SOLO #1: THE UGLY SIDE OF HUNTING

This episode of the Salty Hunter Podcast I sit down with me, myself, and I recapping the spring bear season (yes, I know it’s August), but to be honest with you I wasn’t sure I wanted to publish this. Although I have been called many things in my life dishonest is not one of them. So here is the story. Unabridged, unchanged and you hear it straight from me. This story does not have a happy ending. It does not bring hunting into a good light. But it does let you know of the type of person I am and continue striving to be. Around the hunting industry you hear buzzwords like ethical, moral, lethal and the list goes on and on and on. In this story you will hear words like: greedy, regret, ego and “what the fuck am I doing?”. This is the true story about my spring hunting season. It was heartbreaking, frustrating, and making me question whether I want to hunt with a recurve ever again. Thank you all for listening. I love every damn one of you. Here’s to the hunt. ROSS HILLIER: NOMAD STRENGTH

This episode the Salty Hunter Podcast we have Ross Hillier of Nomad Strength. Ross is a strength and health coach living in the Boise area. He dubs himself an "adult-onset hunter” and has a love for traditional archery. This conversation goes down many pathways, but the underlying message is a love for the outdoors and how fitness plays into it. His journey to get where he is today has its own twists and turns and I'm excited to see how his new onset obsession of hunting will shape his own training. We also touch on ultrarunning and the meditative side of being with yourself for hours. Lots of good information coming at you in this episode. Thank you all for listening. CHRIS DORSEY: WRITER, PRODUCER, HUNTER

On this episode of the Salty Hunter Podcast, we have Chris Dorsey from Dorsey Pictures. Chris has had his hand in the hunting industry for the last few decades and has some pretty amazing stories to tell. I didn't really give him a chance to introduce himself, and that's my fault as a poor interviewer, but Chris has a pulse on just about everything when it comes to the outdoors. Everything from filming to hunting to serving on conservation boards. Hunting the same moose 2 years in a row, to predator calling a 10 foot brown bear on Kodiak. He has hunted everywhere from Africa to Alaska, South America to Spain with some interesting characters along the way. As always none of this is scripted or pre planned, so this freeform conversation I had with Chris was certainly a pleasure to have. We talk about ballot box biology, government overreach in conservation, Pebble Mine and some of his newer films and books. This was an awesome conversation with a guy that is extremely passionate about the conservation of wildlife and presenting hunters in a positive light. Thank you all for listening. ROB PATUTO: STICKBOW CHRONICLES

On this episode Salty Hunter Podcast I am joined by Mike Harris and Rob Patuto of the Stickbow Chronicles. I am a longtime fan of the Stickbow Chronicles so it was an honor to have Rob on the show. This episode ran down many different rabbit holes. Everything from traditional archery to game management, getting involved in your local organizations, bear baiting, Sam Elliott and so much more.
