Iain McGilchrist, ’We Need to Act’

Iain McGilchrist has been outlining for many years that a fundamental problem in the way we are perceiving the world is likely to lead us into trouble. Now in 2022 he believes the situation is reaching a crucial turning point and we need to wake up urgently.  In this conversation with Rebel Wisdom's David Fuller he talks about how our current culture's domination by a 'left brain', reductionistic, materialist and literalist perspective had reached crisis point.  He explains how this is manifesting as a 'war on reality', and a series of attacks on free speech. Iain's work can be found here: https://channelmcgilchrist.com/

Are we doing self improvement wrong? Steve March

Are we going about self development in the wrong way? That's the question tackled by our new film and course with the long time coach Steve March. Steve's work, Aletheia Coaching, has been welcomed and embraced by the likes of John Vervaeke and others in what's been described as the Liminal Web, as it consciously addresses what's called the Meaning Crisis or Meta Crisis. This is released at the same time as a short course with Steve to learn the basics of the Unfolding method, which teaches a powerful new approach to development known as 'unfoldment'. You'll learn: - How to attune to yourself, others, and the world in a way that promotes deeper connection and purpose. - Practices to help you deeply participate in your present-moment experience - Techniques and practices to help you create unfolding partnerships with others To find out more, check here: https://rebelwisdom.co.uk/courses/unfolding

Feminine Wisdom - Schuyler Brown & Samantha Sweetwater

Many people have observed that the conversation we have been curating on Rebel Wisdom has featured many more men than women. Of course we have regularly been asking ourselves why that is, and whether there is a more ‘feminine’ contribution to the dialogue that is not being heard? This was the topic I explored with two fascinating women recently, Schuyler Brown and Samantha Sweetwater. Check out Schuyler's work here, 'The Art of Emergence': https://www.artofemergence.com/  And Samantha here: https://www.samanthasweetwater.com/

How Social Media Warps Creators, Tristan Harris

There has been a lot of focus on the damage that social media is doing to all of us, its users. This growing awareness was partly fuelled by the work of Tristan Harris, through the breakout hit documentary The Social Dilemma. But there has been less attention on how this new landscape also affects creators, through factors like audience capture and feedback loops that distort truth seeking.  Tristan Harris is the director of the Centre for Humane Technology, trying to re-envision a healthier relationship with the technological tools we are using: https://www.humanetech.com/

In Search of the Third Attractor, Daniel Schmachtenberger (part 2)

Where are we headed as a species? What is the landscape of risks and challenges that we need to confront over the next decades, and are there a small number of key factors that we need to solve to avoid catastrophe? These are the questions Daniel Schmachtenberger is laying out in a new two part series on Rebel Wisdom, called 'In Search of the Third Attractor'. As he describes it, the power of ever increasing technological capacity (exponential tech) means that both destructive and creative capacities are increasing exponentially. Two of the most likely outcomes (attractors) are either some kind of chaotic breakdown, or the development of powerful control systems in response, oppressive authoritarian control. Given this, what does a third option, a 'third attractor' look like? Daniel will be speaking at the Rebel Wisdom festival, 'the Last Campfire' in London on November 5th. The Philosophy of Rene Girard, Luke Burgis

One of the most frequently referenced names among many of the thinkers we've been following on Rebel Wisdom has been that of Rene Girard. He was a French polymath, historian, literary critic, and philosopher of social science, who introduced the idea of memetic desire, and an explanation of the function of the 'scapegoat' in organising societies. He was described as the "new Darwin of the human species".  Luke Burgis has just written a book about Girard's work called 'Wanting, the Power of Memetic Desire in Everyday Life': https://lukeburgis.com/wanting/  He joined us to introduce this fascinating thinker and to answer RW members' questions about why this work is so significant now.

Demons & the Machine, John Vervaeke & Jonathan Pageau

This is part 2 of an exclusive conversation between Jonathan Pageau and John Vervaeke recorded in Toronto recently.  In it John and Jonathan reflect on the recent ‘War on Reality’ piece with Paul Kingsnorth and Mary Harrington: https://youtu.be/x4kms2jkKbA  They ask whether we have replaced virtue with value. They also take a turn into the question of the occult, where Jonathan and John talk about whether concepts such as ‘demons’ can be explained as independently existing patterns of reality.

Time for the Irrational, Layman Pascal

In the conversation Rebel Wisdom has been tracking, what's missing? Layman Pascal believes we're not paying enough attention to the irrational, the realms of the imaginal and the occult.  "Layman Pascal was incarnated on a remote island in the Pacific Northwest. He used to be a meditation teacher, yoga instructor & public speaker — but he's feeling much better now." Jordan Peterson, An Integral View: Ken Wilber

In this conversation with Rebel Wisdom's David Fuller, Ken Wilber reflects on the turbulent dynamics of the last few years, and particularly the trajectory of the figures in what was called the Intellectual Dark Web (IDW) including Jordan Peterson and Dave Rubin. This is released shortly after a recent Substack piece by David Fuller called 'What Happened to Jordan Peterson?': https://rebelwisdom.substack.com/p/what-happened-to-jordan-peterson  Ken Wilber is the creator of Integral theory, it attempts to place a wide diversity of theories and models into one single framework. The basis is a "spectrum of consciousness," from archaic consciousness to ultimate spirit, presented as a developmental model. This is a follow up to conversations we recorded back in 2019, which were published as: Ken Wilber: 'Jordan Peterson and the evolution of thought': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDjCnFvz11A  Ken Wilber: The Intellectual Dark Web, an Integral Conversation? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2XK812tSmM

Reflecting on the Pandemic, Zubin Damania

A wide-ranging conversation on the experience of sensemaking during the pandemic, with Zubin Damania (ZDoggMD). Zubin first came to my attention with a viral video at the start of 2020 where he channelled some righteous anger at the medical establishment's response to the pandemic, and said he hoped that the crisis would be the trigger to “burn this broken system to the ground”. For years he's been arguing for a significant change to the medical system, away from treating people as interchangeable parts in a machine and towards a more holistic vision of what he calls Health 3.0. During the pandemic we compared notes on what we were seeing, through shared frameworks like Ken Wilber's Integral Theory and Jonathan Haidt's “moral tastebuds”. He argues for nuance and complexity, and dubs his political perspective as “alt-middle”. 0:00 - The Pandemic & the Information Ecology 04:02 - Zubin & Health Care 3.0 08:09 - The USP of Rebel Wisdom, curating a conversation 10:09 - The pandemic was a stress test that we failed 14:03 - The internet leaking out into the real world 16:37 - The religiosity of the Covid debate 19:53 - The rise in conspiracy narratives 22:56 - Questioning our own thinking 29:33 - Public intellectuals going off the rails 32:48 - The hermeneutics of suspicion 39:00 - A culture of bullshit 44:14 - Conspiracies thrive in the gaps of the mainstream 46:31 - The pre/trans of the insurgency after 2018 53:34 - Paradox of being outside the institutions - audience capture 58:27 - Warping effects of the tech platforms accelerated on creators 01:00:37 - Attention hijack as opposite of mindfulness 01:02:41 - The tragic arc of Jordan Peterson 01:06:55 - The return of the repressed 01:14:14 - The return of psychedelic medicine 01:18:57 - The limitations of psychedelics 01:22:51 - Meditation & Awakening 01:29:36 - Ayahuasca 01:32:14 - Culture War 2.0 & the memetic tribes 01:43:06 - Post Pandemic Awakening 01:46:39 - The English Taboo Against Earnestness 01:49:30 - Mutual Appreciation Society

Curiosity & Wonder, John Vervaeke & Jonathan Pageau

This was a special in person dialogue between the cognitive scientist John Vervaeke and the symbolism expert Jonathan Pageau. They reflect on what each finds valuable about each other's work, the nature of the conversation that they have been part of, good and bad criticism, the nature of symbolism and much more.  It was recorded in Toronto during the making of the forthcoming Rebel Wisdom documentary about John Vervaeke's thought. The Religion of Productivity, Oliver Burkeman

For years the journalist Oliver Burkeman became obsessed with productivity and personal growth, documenting his explorations in a weekly column. Finally it struck him that this attempt was a deeply religious quest, tied into ideas of perfectibility and salvation. When he realised this, he was finally able to find more peace. "For me, the obsession with productivity was totally tied up with this weird self-worth question. [There's] this whole notion that it's all focussed on some moment when everything's going to be alright…there's something about that feels like it's got something to do with justification and salvation, and that feels very religious to me."  Oliver is someone who has had a similar path to Rebel Wisdom’s founder David Fuller, working for the legacy media, and also very interested in personal growth, and they sat down for a wide ranging and fascinating conversation which we are releasing now as a special preview for all Rebel Wisdom subscribers. Check out Oliver's latest book 'Four Thousand Weeks', a sobering allusion to the average human lifespan: https://www.oliverburkeman.com/books

Comedy & Wisdom, John Lloyd

John Lloyd is a legendary comedy producer, who produced some of the biggest comedy hits of the 80s and 90s, including Not the Nine O Clock News, Spitting Image, and all four series of Blackadder. After a mid life crisis he realised that his success wasn't making him happy, and this led to a lengthy search for meaning and wisdom.  This conversation with Rebel Wisdom's David Fuller covered everything from comedy, to the nature of creativity, and the meaning of life.  They also discuss his relationship with his former flatmate and writing partner Douglas Adams, the creator of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.   00:00 Intro 05:17 Personal Life 11:59 Knowing Nothing 16:32 Religion & The Origin of Ideas 26:11 Quite Interesting 30:01 Depression & Focusing on the Other 38:34 Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy & Douglas Adams 45:29 Religion & Secular Rituals 54:02 Science & Spirituality 01:02:44 Intelligence, Comedy & Wisdom  01:12:01 Paradigm Shift 01:20:17 Closing

Conspiracy Theories, Russia & Cancellation, Daniel Pinchbeck

This is a wide ranging conversation about conspiracy theories, the occult, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and more with the writer Daniel Pinchbeck.  Over the years Daniel has spent a lot of time investigating alternative narratives including conspiracy, and has been critical of Rebel Wisdom in the past for not taking these seriously enough.  Alongside this conversation we are publishing a long written piece about the subject of conspiracy theories, with special focus on the recent high profile interview of Maajid Nawaz on the Joe Rogan podcast: https://rebelwisdom.substack.com/p/conspiracy-criticism-and-the-case?s=w  We also talk about Daniel's high profile sex scandal and 'cancellation'.  You can find Daniel's writing on his Substack here: https://substack.com/profile/2728693-daniel-pinchbeck

Elon Musk, Twitter, Free Speech vs Moderation. Jim Rutt & Aaron Rabinowitz

In one of the most important developments in the dynamic between big tech, free speech and media in many years, Elon Musk is buying Twitter for $44bn. Much of the commentary online has devolved into the predictable political shouting matches, and there has been very little engagement with the key questions that this brings up about the nature of moderation, of how to create healthy dialogue and what problems Elon will have to wrestle with in taking Twitter forward. Jim Rutt is the former head of the Santa Fe Institute, and has been involved with online communities since the birth of the internet. He believes that Elon has not fully wrestled with the problem of moderation that he will be taking on with Twitter, a view he explained in his new piece for Quillette, 'Musk & Moderation': https://quillette.com/2022/04/27/musk-and-moderation/  This is a sometimes robust debate and disagreement with Aaron Rabinowitz, a moral philosopher and host of the Embrace the Void podcast. Aaron has spent time wrestling with these same issues, in particular in a famous experiment he ran during the Trump election of 2016 when he created a completely unmoderated discussion group, called Monster island: https://www.skeptic.org.uk/2020/10/monster-island-free-speech-experiment/  Check out Jim's podcast, the Jim Rutt Show: https://www.jimruttshow.com/  And Aaron's podcast Embrace the Void: https://voidpod.com/podcasts

The War on Reality, Mary Harrington & Paul Kingsnorth

"This is like The Matrix written from the point of view in which Agent Smith is the good guy, isn't it?" — Paul Kingsnorth Mary Harrington and Paul Kingsnorth are two of the most intriguing thinkers we’ve featured on Rebel Wisdom. Despite substantial overlap between Paul's concept of "the machine" and Mary's idea of "luxury Gnosticism", they have never been in dialogue with each other.  This was a fascinating and wide ranging conversation where Paul and Mary pushed back against the modernist fervor for transcending the limits of the natural world — they want to remind you that meatspace is not going away, and that it can be quite lovely! Mary and Paul are returning soon to the Rebel Wisdom Digital Campfire to talk more about this topic, asking the question, 'What Do We Do?'. A couple of weeks ago he travelled to the UK for a series of talks - and we took the opportunity to film this excellent dialogue with the philosopher and chess grandmaster Jonathan Rowson, the co-founder of Perspectiva. Suburban to Subversive, Alex Kaschuta

Alex Kaschuta is the host of the Subversive podcast, where she hosts controversial thinkers exploring the 'post-liberal moment'. She used to work in media in London, where she described herself then as a classic rationalist atheist and feminist. In the last few years she's moved back to Romania, become a mother, and has been exploring more traditionalist perspectives, in her life, and through the conversations on her podcast. In this conversation with Rebel Wisdom's David Fuller we cover her recent journey, and how it mirrors many others making the turn from rationalist to traditionalist, and what that says about the cultural time we find ourselves in. Criticism & Online Gurus, Chris Kavanagh

Chris Kavanagh is a cognitive anthropologist, and the co-host of the increasingly popular and influential podcast 'Decoding the Gurus'. This is a podcast that critiques many of the new breed of public intellectuals, including some who have been featured on Rebel Wisdom. Together with co-host, psychologist Matt Browne, they analyse the methods and messages of what they've described as 'secular gurus'. This is an important conversation, about the necessity of criticism, of what counts as good and bad faith, and how truth seeking gets warped. It's a controversial project for many, and in this conversation, Rebel Wisdom's David Fuller puts many of those criticisms to Chris directly.  Alongside this video, David Fuller has written a detailed and exhaustive analysis on Substack, highly recommended to read: https://rebelwisdom.substack.com/p/decoding-the-gurus-and-the-necessity?r=ye9pq&s=w&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web Also referenced in the conversation are: An earlier recording with Chris 'Criticising the IDW': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByZCCmQVPdg Chris's presentation of the 'Gurometer' at The Stoa: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EazLoBk9gA Peter Limberg's 'Memetic Tribes of Culture War 2.0' piece: https://medium.com/s/world-wide-wtf/memetic-tribes-and-culture-war-2-0-14705c43f6bb

The Art of Difficult Conversations, Sara Ness

How can we relate authentically in a world that's tearing itself apart? What skills do we need to truly understand perspectives that differ from our own, and in turn, how can we invite people to consider other ways of thinking?  In this conversation with authentic relating superstar Sara Ness we go from the personal to the cultural, asking how do we have a different kind of conversation; one that isn't about winning, but about authentic connection that takes us somewhere new. We are launching a course with Sara starting on 5 April called 'The Art of Difficult Conversations', where we’ll give you tools to help you resolve some of the biggest communication questions of our time. For example: “How do I even start talking about my perspectives and ideas?” “Why does every conversation I have about current affairs turn into a fight?” “How can I relate with people who don’t make sense to me, and don't want to hear me out?” Check out more details on the course here: https://rebelwisdom.co.uk/courses/conversations

They talked about how the integral map can help make sense of the responses to the pandemic, we discussed Jordan Peterson and the Intellectual Dark Web, and also responded to recent critiques of developmental thinking from the likes of Nora Bateson. This was a dialogue and Q&A with Rebel Wisdom members in our Digital Campfire.

Rogan & the Media, Zubin Damania

All the arrayed forces of the sensemaking crisis, cancel culture, censorship and the ethical dilemmas of truth seeking seem now to be focused on one man, the podcaster and comedian Joe Rogan. These questions were already brought into a heightened focus by the pandemic, and the question of accurate medical information or misinformation taking on a life or death importance. It was into that context that Rogan stepped a few weeks ago with two interviews with highly controversial medical figures, Peter McCullough and Robert Malone.  The medical question is the key one, and taps into all of the key questions about the warping of the information landscape that Rebel Wisdom has been focused on for the last few years, and it's this aspect that we recorded a conversation with the doctor and podcaster Zubin Damania (ZDoggMD). This conversation was recorded before the recent "n-word" controversy erupted around Rogan.

The Religious Wars of the Pandemic Endgame, Rebel Wisdom

One of the biggest problems with talking about something as vast and impactful as the pandemic is to find the right level of analysis. In this epic piece, we look at the deeper religious and theological forces playing out below the surface of our day to day conflicts over topics like vaccines, authoritarianism and safety. We pull apart the hidden religiosity of "both sides" of the pandemic, that seems to be accelerating, even as the rapid spread of the Omicron variant brings us towards the pandemic endgame. It features interviews with the cognitive scientist John Vervaeke, Unherd writer Mary Harrington, the author Paul Kingsnorth, emergency doctor Rocky Jedick and many more. We have recently launched the Rebel Wisdom Substack for all our written content, and to host exclusive videos for members (just $5). John McWhorter, ’Woke Racism’ Q&A

John McWhorter is one of America's most incisive, outspoken heterodox commentators on race. His latest book, 'Woke Racism', is a full frontal attack on what he considers to be a new hidden racism, coming from the left. In Woke Racism, McWhorter outlines the workings of what he believes is a new religion, from the original sin of “white privilege” and the weaponization of cancel culture to ban heretics, to the evangelical fervor of the “woke mob.” He shows how this religion that claims to “dismantle racist structures” is actually harming his fellow Black Americans by infantilizing Black people, setting Black students up for failure, and passing policies that disproportionately damage Black communities. The new religion might be called “antiracism,” but it features a racial essentialism that’s barely distinguishable from racist arguments of the past. Web3: Tech vs the Human Condition, Jordan Hall

Web3 is the collective name for the latest wave of innovation online. Touted as much more decentralised, democratic and creative than the current web ecosystem, for its evangelists it's our best hope to innovate our way out of many our most pressing societal problems. Jordan Hall is a tech entrepreneur and Deep Code analyst, who has been deeply involved in what is now being called Web1, the early garage innovators who created the early internet, and also Web2, when cyberspace was colonised by the the new monoliths like Google, Facebook and Apple. He's deeply invested in the success of Web3. In this conversation with Rebel Wisdom, Jordan discusses the possible trajectory of Web3, how well developed the space is, and also the problems that are becoming ever more apparent. In particular how the early hopes that Web3 might be able to find tech solutions to the eternal problems of human beings coordinating together, seem to be failing. The Psychospiritual Legacy of The Beatles, Erik Davis & Anderson Todd

Why are we still obsessed with The Beatles, and is it healthy? Fifty years after they broke up, it seems that the mark they made on our culture has not faded. Does this demonstrate the timeless genius of the band, or is it a sign of a culture that is stuck? A few days ago saw the release of an eight hour fly-on-the-wall documentary 'Get Back', made by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson. It shows some of their last sessions as they put together the album 'Let it Be', and culminated in their famous rooftop concert. Erik Davis is the foremost historian of the counterculture, and Anderson Todd works in the Wisdom and Consciousness Lab at Toronto University. ‘Is Reality All In Your Head?‘ with Bernardo Kastrup

The Matter With Things, Iain McGilchrist

In ‘The Matter with Things’, Iain McGilchrist tackles the big questions: Who are we? What is the world? How can we understand consciousness, matter, space and time? What happens if we neglect the sacred and divine? He argues that we have become enslaved to an account of things dominated by a partial view dominated by the brain’s left hemisphere, one that blinds us to an awe-inspiring reality that is all around us, had we but eyes to see it. He suggests that in order to understand ourselves and the world we need science and intuition, reason and imagination, not just one or two. When we do, we tap into an understanding that is both profound and beautiful, in line with the deepest traditions of human wisdom. Dr. Iain McGilchrist is a psychiatrist, philosopher and literary scholar. He is a Quondam Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and of the Royal Society of Arts, as well as a former Clinical Director of the Bethlem Royal & Maudsley Hospital, London. With a gift for synthesising neuroscience, culture and philosophy, his thought has provided essential frames for making sense of the times we live in and proved particularly influential on Rebel Wisdom.

Rogan, CNN & Heterodox Thinking, Zubin Damania

The pandemic has stress tested all our institutions, especially those we have relied on for truth seeking and sensemaking. Ivermectin, the Backstory of the FLCCC. Eric Osgood

Rebel Wisdom has been covering the ongoing controversy over the claims to do with the drug Ivermectin and those who claim the Covid vaccines are dangerous.   The principle advocate for Ivermectin has been the doctor Pierre Kory and his organisation the Frontline Covid-19 Critical Care Alliance (FLCCC).   However, behind the scenes there has been growing concern about the closeness between the FLCCC and anti-vaccine activists.   Eric Osgood MD was part of the FLCCC, but is now speaking out publicly about what he observed, and raising the alarm.   This is released at the same time as our final installment in the investigation into the vaccine claims on the Dark Horse podcast: https://youtu.be/pyhWkiG7wAU   This is part of Rebel Wisdom's series of films on this topic. The State of Sensemaking, Rebel Wisdom Series

For years Rebel Wisdom has been focused on the problems of Sensemaking, how we find truth together. The pandemic has made all these problems worse.   We are lost in echo chambers, manipulated by narrative warfare and the hacking of our attention by the big tech platforms. The problem of Sensemaking is right at the core of all our issues, because how can we begin to solve our problems if we can't agree what they are, and have no shared sense of reality.   In this new series Rebel Wisdom launches a deep dive into the state of Sensemaking in 2021.   Rebel Wisdom is running a major free online festival 'The State of Sensemaking' on September 25 & 26, where we will be hosting conversations to try to make sense of some of the most difficult cultural topics: https://rebelwisdom.co.uk/state-of-se...   This film tells the journey of Rebel Wisdom so far, and contains clips from: 'The War on Sensemaking', Daniel Schmachtenberger: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Lqao...   'Making Sense of Sensemaking', Jordan Hall, Jamie Wheal & Daniel Schmachtenberger: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Es_W...   'Glitch in the Matrix, Jordan Peterson, the Mainstream Media and the Intellectual Dark Web': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trhTb...   'Glitch in the Matrix II, The Origin of the Intellectual Dark Web', Eric Weinstein: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKeMI...   'The Intellectual Dark Web, An Integral Conversation?', Ken Wilber: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2XK8...   'Jordan Peterson and the Meaning Crisis', John Vervaeke: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6RFS...   'The Legacy of Integral', Jamie Wheal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4krRS...   'The Age of Breach', Alexander Beiner: https://medium.com/rebel-wisdom/the-a...   We are also running our groundbreaking Sensemaking course again in October, check out the details here: https://rebelwisdom.co.uk/courses/sen...

Vaccines & Dark Horse, an Investigation

Over the last few weeks, Rebel Wisdom has been investigating the claims of vaccine dangers made by Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying and their guests on the Dark Horse podcast. This has not been an easy process given Bret and Heather are former interviewees and friends.   But the stakes could not be higher, and this issue shows up all of the problems of Sensemaking, and finding truth.   At the same time as this film is being released, David Fuller has written a piece for Areo magazine looking at the context and the sensemaking challenges involved: https://areomagazine.com/2021/08/12/o...   We have also released a longer, exhaustive investigation of the evidence on our Rebel Wisdom Medium page: https://medium.com/rebel-wisdom/on-va...   And an interview with Iona Italia, the editor of Areo magazine, about the editorial process and the difficulty of balancing public and private when criticising friends: https://youtu.be/94jwkGduDls   We will be hosting a Q&A dialogue about the investigation in our Digital Campfire on Wednesday 18th August. Eric Weinstein: Vaccines, Ivermectin & Dark Horse

What does Eric Weinstein make of the current controversy around vaccines and Ivermectin, centred on the criticism of his brother Bret's podcast, the Dark Horse. In the last days, Sam Harris and former guest Yuri Deigin have both been heavily critical of claims made by both Bret and his guests. In this conversation with Rebel Wisdom's David Fuller, Eric talks through his concerns at what is going on, and what he thinks are the deeper currents of the problem, including a lack of effective leadership in dealing with the pandemic. Ivermectin, For and Against, with Tess Lawrie, Graham Walker & Gideon Meyerowitz-Katz

In recent months, Ivermectin has gone from a little known anti parasite drug to a culture war battleground - for some it's a potential miracle drug for treating and prevention of Covid and for others it's over-hyped snake oil. Discussion of Ivermectin has also led to censorship from the Big Tech platforms. But the free speech/censorship dynamic is only part of the story - is also shows how broken our information landscape is - with the advocates on one side, and the skeptics on the other - creating echo chambers and filter bubbles, and broken sensemaking.  In this film we hear from three voices, Tess Lawrie, one of the most outspoken advocates for Ivermectin, Gideon Meyerowitz-Katz, an epidemiologist and data nerd from Australia who has been examining the data, and Graham Walker, an ER doctor from San Francisco who has also been deep in the science and competing claims around Ivermectin.  Rebel Wisdom has prepared a full background briefing document on Ivermectin here to go alongside this film:  We will be hosting a conversation around this topic, and attempting to make sense of it live in our digital campfire on Tuesday 27th July, to join us, sign up here for as little as $10 per month: https://rebelwisdom.co.uk/plans

The Weirdest People in the World with Joseph Henrich

If you're reading this, there's a good chance you're WEIRD - raised in a culture which is Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, Democratic. Joseph Henrich is professor of human evolutionary biology at Harvard University and a pioneer in the study of WEIRD psychology - how it evolved, its unique characteristics, and why we need to understand it.  In this session in the Rebel Wisdom Campfire, Henrich joined us to discuss his book 'The Weirdest People in the World' - drawing on cutting-edge research in anthropology, psychology, economics, and evolutionary biology to explore how incorporating WEIRD psychology into our sensemaking can give us a new lens on our own psychology, history and culture. Medicines, Censorship, Quillette & the Dark Horse, a sensemaking dialogue

There has been a lot of heat recently around YouTube censoring Bret Weinstein's Dark Horse podcast discussions around the vaccines and the drug Ivermectin. Yesterday Quillette published an article highly critical of Bret co-authored by Yuri Deigin, one of the researchers who uncovered evidence on the 'lab leak' hypothesis and a former guest on Bret's podcast: https://quillette.com/2021/07/06/look... This was a discussion about the deeper issues at play, the difficulties of finding truth and why the different narratives around these issues don't seem to come into contact with each other.   It was a dialogue held in the Rebel Wisdom Digital Campfire including Max Borders, the executive director of Social Evolution, a non-profit startup dedicated to liberating people and solving social problems through innovation, and Joshua Zader, an online entrepreneur with a background in clinical psychology and a passion for circling.

Sensemaking the 'Lab Leak', Rebel Wisdom

In the last few weeks, the suggestion that the Covid virus emerged from a lab in Wuhan instead of the wild has gone from 'fringe conspiracy theory', to 'possibility' to 'most likely explanation' for many mainstream media outlets.   At the same time, the way that the 'consensus' position was created and defended has been laid bare. This is a hugely important story that touches on many of the topics we've covered on Rebel Wisdom, the problems of Sensemaking, the manipulation of the information landscape by powerful actors, and the value of decentralised collective intelligence as an alternative sensemaking force.     In this film, we hear from some of the main players, and try to tell the story so far. This is a hugely complex story, which we have been researching for several months.   We have put together a comprehensive briefing document alongside our latest newsletter, to receive it, check this link: https://mailchi.mp/rebelwisdom.co.uk/...

What is a Live Player? Samo Burja

What is a Live Player? How does this concept help us make sense of the cultural landscape? Is becoming one important, maybe essential? Samo Burja is a deep thinker with a talent for creating concepts that help make sense of the cultural landscape, such as 'Live Player', meaning a person or organisation capable of novelty, versus one only able to run existing scripts. The pandemic, and the inept response to it has shown up how many institutions and organisations are now effectively 'dead players', and how hollow and dysfunctional many of our systems have become. In this wide-ranging and inspiring conversation, Samo explains what turns live players into dead ones, the underlying psychology and dynamics at play, and how we might go about changing that process. Rebel Wisdom is shortly to begin a new online journey, called Becoming a Live Player, led by David Fuller and Peter Limberg of The Stoa. We will explore the landscape together, and learn some of the most effective skills, practices and psychotechnologies from as many different sources (memetic tribes) as possible: https://rebelwisdom.co.uk/courses/liv... This conversation was recorded in the Rebel Wisdom Digital Campfire. To see what sessions and discussions are coming up, check here: https://rebelwisdom.co.uk/campfire-ev... Samo Burja, 'About Me': "There has never been an immortal society. No matter how technologically advanced our own society is, it is unlikely to be an exception. To achieve a positive future that defies these odds, we must understand the hidden forces that shape society. In 2017, I founded Bismarck Analysis, a consulting firm that investigates the political and institutional landscape of society. I’m a Research Fellow at the Long Now Foundation where I study how institutions can endure for centuries and millennia. Reactionary Feminism? Mary Harrington

Mary recently took part in Rebel Wisdom's first 'Sex and Culture' event, where there was a great deal of interest in her concept of 'reactionary feminism'.   She returns to Rebel Wisdom for a showcase event in our Digital Campfire, in dialogue with Raven Connolly. She says: "The central contention of reactionary feminism is that the ideas of 'freedom' and 'progress' themselves are now delivering diminishing returns for all but a shrinking elite. And this is impacting especially severely on women, meaning that in order to remain true to the central task of feminism - advocating for women's political interests - feminists must turn against the theology of progress."   To join live and take part in conversations like this one, in Rebel Wisdom's Digital Campfire, check out the upcoming sessions here: https://rebelwisdom.co.uk/campfire-ev...   Mary is a writer and journalist. After graduating from Oxford University in 2002 with a first-class degree in English Literature, she was an early adopter of millennial precarity, via a twenties spent experimenting with gig economy work, intentional communities, gender nonconformity and unconventional relationship forms.   Along the way she discovered digital culture and web 2.0, co-founding the digital learning marketplace ‘School of Everything’; working as a researcher with the New York-based digital culture think tank ‘The Institute for the Future of the Book’; and curating cult art events.   After the crash of 2008 she worked in marketing while training as a psychotherapist, before discovering marriage, motherhood and small town life - along with an audience as a writer via her political blog. Her writing has been published by the New Statesman, The Spectator and Mail on Sunday, and she is a contributing editor at the influential online magazine UnHerd.

In this film, we try to pull apart the deeper strands of mythology, religious fervour and high weirdness with three experts in the esoteric, Erik Davis, Gary Lachman and Jules Evans. We will have a Sensemaker's Q&A on this topic on Wednesday 20th January at 8pm UK, to join, check out memberships: https://rebelwisdom.co.uk/plans

The Rise of Psychedelic Capitalism

Psychedelics are going mainstream. With landmark studies in the last decade showing their incredible potential in treating serious mental health conditions, 2020 saw a goldrush of investment. But what are the implications as psychedelics move from the counterculture to the boardroom? In this short documentary, Alexander Beiner speaks to leading experts in the field - from clinicians and CEO's to shamans and philosophers - to ask what the rise of psychedelic capitalism means for the future of culture and medicine.   Includes interviews with Dr. Rosalind Watts (clinical lead of Imperial College's groundbreaking psilocybin for depression study), Erik Davis (author of Techgnosis and High Weirdness), Jamie Wheal (author of Stealing Fire), Kat Conour of the Auryn Project, Bill Linton (CEO of The Usona Institute) and Shipibo shaman Jose Lopez Sanchez among others.   Are we seeing the birth of a new era in mental health care, or late capitalism’s sneakiest cash grab yet? Turn on and tune in to find out.   We'll be hosting a live Q&A in our community with some guests from this film on Wednesday, 13 Jan. Spiritual Emergency & Mental Health in a post-Covid World, Jules Evans

This talk was given at the Rebel Wisdom Festival in late May 2020.   A spiritual emergency is a period of intense and extended disturbance to a person’s ordinary sense of self and reality, which can involve psychotic-like symptoms such as mania, ego-dissolution, a heightened sense of meaning, hallucinations and a confusion of inner and outer worlds.   These experiences can be treated as symptoms of chronic brain disorders requiring psychotropic medication. However, they are better understood as attempts by the psyche to seek greater wholeness. If properly handled, they can be transitions to greater maturity, flourishing and wisdom.   Jules Evans is a philosopher and author, his most recent book is 'Breaking Open: Finding a Way Through Spiritual Emergency', with psychiatrist Tim Read: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Breaking-Ope...   Jules Evans' website: https://www.philosophyforlife.org/

The Evolving Conversation, John Vervaeke & Peter Limberg

How do we have conversations that can go into new territory? John Vervaeke and Peter Limberg are enmarked on a project to revive the ancient practice of 'dialogos', a form of dialogue that created the first wave of Greek philosophy.   Peter Limberg will be leading a session for the Rebel Wisdom Community this Thursday, on the topic of Memetic Mediation, more details below, to take part, become a Rebel Wisdom Member.   John Vervaeke has become known to many through his series 'Awakening From the Meaning Crisis'. Since the release of this grand history of thought, he has turned his attention to the process of how we come to generate new ideas; dialogue and dialectic.   Peter Limberg runs The Stoa, and is the Rebel Wisdom Toronto Correspondent: https://www.thestoa.ca/   In this wide-ranging and fascinating discussion, they talk about where the cutting edge of the evolving conversation is at, and the necessity to cultivate new skills to move forward.   To get access to more exclusive content, and to join the growing Rebel Wisdom Community, become a member: https://www.rebelwisdom.co.uk/plans   Peter's Session: The Psychodynamic is Political, The Art of Memetic Meditation with Peter Limberg - Thursday 27th 7PM EST/ 4PM PST/ 12AM UK/ 9AM Fri Eastern Australia   As a whole, we are not only becoming politically and philosophically divergent, we are becoming increasingly fragmented. Multiple worldviews of how the world "is" and "ought" to be are co-existing, and this co-existence is not a peaceful one.   The build-up towards the 2020 election in American is seeing to an intensification of our culture war, and because of this we are seeing memetic violence turn kinetic. How can we wise rebels address this? Memetic mediation, the ability to mediate amongst radically different worldviews by taking on a multitude of perspectives, might hold the key.   Before mediating between "memetic tribes" however, one will have to address their own internal conflict. The psychodynamic is political. If one cannot get into the right relationship with themselves, and the various subpersonalities they consist of, they won't be able to help others get into the right relationship with each other.   In this interactive session, Peter Limberg will introduce the concept of memetic mediation, followed by various practices that will help us sniff out our "philosophical allergies", in service to learning how to be responsive rather than reactive in the culture war. 90 mins.

At the start of the 20th century, the Nordic Countries were some of the poorest in Europe, with the lowest quality of life. By the end of the century they were some of the wealthiest and best places to live in the world.   Why and how? What the F*ck is Going On? The Sensemaking Series, Rebel Wisdom

The question of who to trust, how we find truth and how we are being manipulated is central to understanding and solving all our other problems.   The pandemic crisis has acted like an amplifier and catalyst of all the existing fractures in culture. The question of reliable sensemaking is right at the core of resolving any of these problems.   Rebel Wisdom is beginning a series of films looking at the question of truth and sensemaking. On Jordan Peterson & The Hidden Epidemic, Rebel Wisdom

The Canadian psychologist and celebrity Jordan Peterson recently broke his near-year long silence and descibed his debilitating illness as the result of benzodiazepine dependence.   Peterson became ill simply as a result of following doctors' advice. What does that say about our society and culture, our media environment, and the state of psychiatric medicine.   In this Rebel Wisdom investigation, David Fuller talks to one of the world's leading investigators of the long term effects of psychiatric drugs, Robert Whitaker, a Pulitzer Prize shortlisted author.   He also links it to Eric Weinstein's concept of the DISC, or Distributed Idea Suppression Complex, to explore why the knowledge of the long term dangers of these drugs is not reflected in the media conversation.   The whole interview with Robert Whitaker is being released at the same time as this film: https://youtu.be/LQvN5aFcBr8   Relevant links from the conversation:   The Mikhaila Peterson Podcast #9 - Jordan B. Unlearning Race in 2020? Thomas Chatterton Williams

As tensions rise over racial divisions throughout the western world, books like 'White Fragility' and 'How to Be An Anti-Racist' have flown to the top of the bestseller lists. These frame race as central to our understanding of the world.   In his book, 'Unlearning Race, Self-Portrait in Black and White', Thomas Chatterton Williams takes a very different tack, attempting to understand his own mixed race background and arguing that we should move away from seeing racial categories as primary and fixed.   What does he make of this new focus on race, and how does identity politics wall us off from each other?   You can listen to podcast versions of our films on Spotify or Apple Podcasts by searching 'Rebel Wisdom'   You can also view our films on our YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/RebelWisdom/featured   To support Rebel Wisdom, and get member benefits including regular Q&As with the interviewees from our films for our members, check out: https://www.rebelwisdom.co.uk/plans

This is an audio version of David Icke & London Real, an Investigation which was published on the Rebel Wisdom YouTube site May 2nd 2020. On 6th April, London Real broadcast an interview with 'conspiracy researcher' David Icke. In it he claimed that Covid-19 was "a hoax" and that 5G was designed for a "mass cull". YouTube took it down. In the wake of this the owner of London Real, Brian Rose launched a crowdfunding campaign for what he called the "Digital Freedom Platform". This has raced to nearly $1m in just over a week. However, lots of the claims about the platform don't appear to add up. This is an investigation into the platform, the wider issue of free speech and the censorship of the big tech platforms. Over the last month, Rebel Wisdom has been interviewing some of the brightest minds in systems change and complexity to make sense of the crisis and possible responses to it. One thing that has emerged in these conversations is the importance of understanding myth and stories to contextualise what we're experiencing. Rebel Wisdom's Alexander Beiner interviewed three people with an understanding of how myths, stories and wisdom traditions give us a new insight into the crisis: Zak Stein, Stephen Jenkinson and Charlotte du Cann. Here, we weave these conversations together with ideas we've explored on the channel in the past to look at the mythopoetic landscape of the pandemic. Daniel Schmachtenberger: Covid 19 Situational Assessment, Risk Landscape & Possible Solutions

This is an audio version of Covid 19 Situational Assessment, Risk Landscape & Possible Solutions, Daniel Schmachtenberger which was published on the Rebel Wisdom YouTube site March 22nd 2020. In this fast changing and overwhelming pandemic crisis, what is really going on, and what should individuals and governments do? Daniel Schmachtenberger works on global catastrophic risk assessment and mitigation, systemic fragility, and evolving societal architecture. He has been tracking this virus since its early outbreak in China and for the last few weeks has been working on supporting coordinated response strategies, interfacing with major institutional and private sector actors. In this situational assessment, he outlines some of the misconceptions about the virus, some likely trajectories for the US and the rest of the world, and lays out some concrete proposals for avoiding disaster. Daniel's recent post on Facebook outlined issues with misinformation and the information ecology during the pandemic: https://www.facebook.com/notes/daniel... Useful analysis for understanding the pandemic are the articles by Tomas Pueyo: Coronavirus: Why You Must Act Now: https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/corona... Coronavirus: The Hammer and the Dance: https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/corona... Daniel's full bio from Helena: https://helena.org/about "Daniel has participated in projects to survey the landscape of existential and catastrophic risks, advance forecasting and mitigation strategies, and develop capacities for the kinds of multi-agent coordination needed to implement sufficient solutions. Associated work has been done to synthesize and advance civilizational collapse and institutional decay models, insofar as they are useful in both scenario modeling and designing more resilient systems. That body of work also explored the social architectures that give rise to the coordination failures underneath and driving all catastrophic risk scenarios, and identified a finite set of generator functions (believed to be a complete set). Categorical solutions to those generator functions would solve for the class of collapse obsoleting the need for focus on isolated instances. Such solutions are believed to be achievable and would represent the kernel for a new and robust civilizational model…that has the capacity for enduring antifragility in the presence of the (destabilizing) power conferred by decentralized exponential technology.  Advancing those models for long term viability, along with advancing the capacities for sense-making, design, and coordination needed to support the necessary nearer-term transitional and protective work, is Daniel’s mission and focus. Some of this thinking on these topics can be found here (mostly in podcasts): https://civilizationemerging.com/ He has also done work in functional medicine and biotech, education and human development, and consulted local and global organizations on how to solve complex problems across many sectors." This is an audio version of Broken Mice, Epstein & the DISC, Brett & Eric Weinstein which was published on the Rebel Wisdom YouTube site March 4th 2020. This is an audio version of Lost Ways of Knowing which was published on the Rebel Wisdom YouTube site on February 14th 2020. Culture is fragmenting into ideological tribes defined by rigid certainty and reductionist thinking. As a result, we're struggling to find new solutions to the significant challenges we face. What if it's the way we're perceiving that's the problem? Rebel Wisdom's Alexander Beiner has spent the last few months interviewing scientists, facilitators and systems theorists to explore the neuroscience, psychology and history of different ways of knowing, and how we can use them to make sense. It includes new interviews with John Vervaeke, philosopher Nora Bateson, and jazz theorist Greg Thomas, facilitator Bonnitta Roy and a brand new conversation between Iain McGilchrist and John Vervaeke. This film accompanies a three part written series which we're releasing on the Rebel Wisdom Medium channel. Chapter 1 is out now and can be found here: http://bit.ly/2wa2Lsf You can see some of the people in this film live at the Rebel Wisdom Festival, London, May 30/31 2020: https://www.rebelwisdom.co.uk/festival Rebel Wisdom are now running regular Q&As with the interviewees from our films for our members, check out: https://www.rebelwisdom.co.uk/plans We also have a Rebel Wisdom Discord discussion channel: https://discord.gg/RK4MeYW
