Hackers Chisel 2 Million BNB Coins Worth $560 Million

Binance, the largest crypto exchange in the world by trading volume, says it suffered a sizeable hack to its BNB Chain network. Two million BNB tokens were withdrawn (worth approximately $560 million), although Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao, better known as CZ, says his team was able to take control of a majority of the funds, holding losses under $100 million. The hacker apparently targeted a vulnerability in a cross-chain bridge. The news came on the same day as new US labor data showed the jobs market remained resilient, sending crypto prices sharply lower. Nico Brugge and Ash Bennington welcome Real Vision co-founder and CEO Raoul Pal for a special edition of the Crypto Daily Briefing: an AMA session on a day of major market news. Are NFTs Down for the Count?

You've seen the reports: Mainstream media have declared non-fungible tokens dead and have buried them forever. Yes, prices are way down from the peak. Yes, enthusiasm has waned. But is this the end of the story? Will NFTs fade into oblivion? Or is this just a floor from which NFTs will thrive again? Could it be about dominant players taking greater shares of the cake, i.e. the bigger projects cannibalizing the smaller? So many questions, and who better to answer them than Chris Maddern, the co-founder and CEO of Floor, an app that tracks NFTs. Chris joins Real Vision's Paul Guerra and Elaine Ly LIVE today for a Crypto Daily Briefing NFT bonanza. Chris, Paul, and Elaine talk about the top stories in the NFT space – Japan’s ambitious investment plans, Veefriends’ expansion into physical toys, and Improbable's $100 million funding round – and then take a step back to assess the big picture. USDC, Smaller Issuers, and Systemic Risk

When there’s talk of the risks stablecoins represent to the global financial system, Tether is usually the subject. And the largest stablecoin by market capitalization continues to generate questions about the reserves that support its U.S. dollar peg. However, according to a new report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, even USDC, a stablecoin backed by higher-grade assets (based on self-declarations), could, too, represent a systemic risk. At the top of today’s edition of Real Vision Crypto Daily Briefing, Marco Olivera and Ash Bennington talk about why the New York Fed honed in on USDC. Ash and Marco also discuss a new report from the interagency Financial Stability Oversight Council that includes recommendations to the U.S. Congress on crypto regulation. Does Crypto Have a Crime Problem?

In its mid-year update, popular blockchain data company Chainalysis reported that $1.9 billion was lost to hacks and theft through the first six months of 2022, up from $1.2 billion through the same point in 2021. Is it enough to impede widespread adoption? Also, the Securities and Exchange Commission is coming after the initial coin offering from a blockchain project in 2017; so, why now? And there finally may be a solution to the recurring outages on the Solana network. The Solana Exploit, Saylor's Exit, and Is the Bottom In?

Hackers Pick Thousands of Solana Wallets

Thousands of wallets holding Solana, one of the world’s top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, have been targeted by hackers in an ongoing attack. "The Bear Trend Is in Place Until It Isn't"

Cryptocurrency prices are rising, but there are some conflicting signals coming from the market. According to Dean Carr, "It's a patience game." Carr, the founder of C The Light Trading, breaks down charts of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other altcoins on his watch list, taking a technical approach to illustrate his main point. Carr thinks we need to see more upside rotation over multiple time frames to confirm a trend is in place before we enter new trades. And we may get some great short- to medium-term opportunities if we see those confirmations. Carr adds a note of caution: “The bear trend is in place until it isn't," and traders should be careful about "FOMO'ing in." Former Fed Economist Turned Private Market Investor Talks Inflation and Crypto

Bitcoin (and cryptocurrency generally) often has been called a long-term inflation hedge. Over the last few months, however, soaring inflation (and central banks’ efforts to counter it) has been a major driver of broad losses across the crypto market. Indeed, the U.S. dollar’s purchasing power against Bitcoin has been in an uptrend for the better part of 2022, inviting skepticism of the “inflation hedge” narrative. What’s The Bull Case For Bitcoin

How does Bitcoin provide value to investors? According to Andy Edstrom, the "clearest case is digital gold." An NFT Ecosystem Like This Is Worth Guarding

Times are rough out there in the NFT market. But Meta Angels are serious builders who create unique experiences for their holders. It starts with direct dialogue with community members in the “wishing well.” It leads to launches like Angel Labs, a 10-week accelerator for experienced operators launching NFT-enabled businesses. And it includes dropping their own marketplace for their collection. This is the kind of team and the kind of Web3 ecosystem that helps us cut through the fog of this bear market to a not-so-distant future of growth and development. There’s no question the market is at a serious low. But, speaking with Real Vision's Elaine Ly, co-founder Allyson Downey and Sarana Haeta (who works under the artist name Aslan Ruby) say investing in NFTs takes a long-term view. “This is an incredibly volatile space,” notes Downey. “You can't be in it if you don't have a strong stomach." Is This Bitcoin Bulls' Last Stand?

Where’s the support for Bitcoin, and what happens if that level fails to hold? Crypto analyst and trader Rekt Capital returns to offer his technical take on the steep retracement for the world’s No. 1 cryptocurrency. Rekt is paying attention to what he calls the “macro range low” because it's "the bulls' last stand." If it’s lost, we’ll likely see a macro distribution phase, where sellers dominate the market. This scenario suggests months of downside before a final capitulation event precedes the next accumulation phase. How low might Bitcoin go in this circumstance? And what's Rekt's strategy? This Is How DeFi Will Attract Institutions

The people working in DeFi are reimagining the delivery of a key set of human services on-chain. One of them, Ryan Hanley, is Head of Product – DeFi at Elwood Technologies. Ryan joins Qredo's Ben Whitby to talk about why more institutions are allocating capital to this new way of doing business and how Elwood is designing its trading infrastructure to meet rising demand for digital assets. Ryan and Ben also discuss recent developments around custody and “know your customer” compliance, and they explore the privacy risks of storing user data. Although novel because of the newness of the technology, these are all relatively routine steps when it comes to the legal aspects of creating a new industry. Though there’s still more work to be done to make widespread institutional adoption a reality, Hanley is hopeful. As he notes, DeFi will thrive as regulation proceeds and institutions grow more comfortable with crypto’s underlying concepts. Recorded on March 29, 2022. Learn more about your ad

Ether-Backed DeFi Platform Offers Interesting Incentives

A reformed lawyer, Liquity founder Robert Lauko met Vitalik Buterin in 2015 in Switzerland. After that fateful encounter, Lauko decided to dedicate his professional time to developing crypto projects. His first venture is a decentralized borrowing protocol with DNA similar to MakerDAO’s but with the Ethereum blockchain as its base layer. Among its intriguing set of incentives, Liquity offers borrowers the opportunity to pay an up-front fee rather than an interest rate over time. Its ability to operate with lower collateralization requirements compared to other protocols is ensured by an efficient liquidation mechanism. For Bitcoin, Micali states that the blockchain has an ad hoc mechanism to reach agreement on a common block; on the other hand, Algorand uses a Byzantine Agreement on the block, utilizing the strongest form of consensus and mitigating the risk of “bad actors”. Compass Mining is here to simplify it to the point that literally anyone can participate in the decentralized computational process and add new blocks of transactions to the world’s No. 1 blockchain, whether at home or through one of 23 collaborating data centers in five different countries. As co-founder and CEO Whit Gibbs explains to Real Vision’s Elaine Ly, Compass Mining’s service enables those who don’t want to host a machine in their house to connect to a collaborating data center and receive mined Bitcoin directly into their wallets. Gibbs notes that Intel’s new mining machines could break up ASICS’s quasi-monopoly. He’s also bullish about the impact of President Joe Biden’s recent executive order on the ecosystem. Opposing Views: Pomp & Mike Green on Bitcoin

Mike Green, chief strategist and portfolio manager at Logica Capital, and Anthony Pompliano, investor at Pomp Investments, join Ash Bennington, Real Vision senior editor, to discuss their opposing views on Bitcoin. They each explain their views on Bitcoin—Pompliano makes the case for Bitcoin being a store of value that should be widely adopted and encouraged by the United States in order to stay competitive globally while Green asserts that Bitcoin is used primarily for nefarious activity and is mainly controlled by entities that are oppositional to the United States. Green believes that Bitcoin is the perfect example of markets indicating that something is incredibly successful, even when in actuality it is failing (or will fail), and that its price appreciation does mean that it is a robust system. Filmed on February 1, 2021. Key Learnings: Pompliano believes that there are many non-trivial indicators that suggest Bitcoin is robust and becoming widely adopted including the number of

ECASH Act Would Establish a Real Digital Dollar

In its most basic terms, the digital dollar debate is about a public option versus a private option. According to Rohan Grey, assistant professor at Willamette University College of Law, there is a middle ground that happens to be the best option. Grey, who advised the authors of the bill, joins Real Vision’s Ash Bennington and Santiago Velez, co-founder and division lead of R&D at Block Digital, to talk about the ECASH Act recently introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. The “Electronic Currency And Secure Hardware Act” would make the U.S. Treasury, rather than the Federal Reserve, the issuer of what would be “a true digital analogue to the U.S. dollar.” According to Grey, it would function similarly to physical cash in that it would be "public money with privacy characteristics" and use "no ledger at all." Grey walks Bennington and Velez through the bill’s particulars, noting its emphasis on preserving privacy. Recorded on March 29, 2022. Learn more about your ad choices. Vi

How To Make Sense of Bitcoin's On-Chain Metrics

All cryptocurrency trading and investing activity is available on a public ledger. And all that activity can be extracted and studied. This is what’s called “on-chain analysis.” Indeed, one of the remarkable things about trading and investing in crypto is the easy availability of rich data streams that allow traders and investors to see things traditional technical analysis does not make visible. Benjamin Cowen, CEO of Into The Cryptoverse, joins Real Vision's Ash Bennington to talk about new ways of understanding price action using on-chain data to analyze consumer behavior through indicators like "HODL Waves." How Does Japan's Deflation Explain Crypto's Rise?

Could Bitcoin Be the Global Reserve Currency?

Ray Dalio, founder, co-chairman, and co-chief investment officer of Bridgewater Associates, the world’s largest hedge fund, famously noted that global reserve currencies typically last for 100 years or so. If that trend holds, the US dollar is nearing the end of the privileged status it inherited from the British pound. So, what comes next? Greg Foss and Seb Bunney believe it’s Bitcoin. Foss, a strategist at VPC, and Bunney, who advocates at The Looking Glass, argue that the world’s No. 1 cryptocurrency features characteristics necessary to the task. Foss stresses the importance to humanity of a hard asset immune to censorship and manipulation. Inflation, he says, is crippling poor families on fixed incomes, leading them down a dangerous path of debt accumulation. Is This How the Centralization Age Ends?

Centralization has defined technology, finance, and government for decades. Bill Barhydt, co-founder and CEO of Abra, considers the 1969 moon landing the peak of centralization: people working together, pooling massive amounts of resources, achieving the near-impossible. Centralization has its benefits. It’s also had its day. History shows that global change often corresponds with the introduction of new technology. The present shift from centralization to decentralization, according to Barhydt, is being catalyzed by blockchain. And Abra’s global DeFi hub is at the cutting edge of this revolution. In addition to his big-picture philosophy, Barhydt explains how yield is generated in the DeFi economy and shares his views on the future of several mainstream layer 1 tokens. "Our Vision Is To Build a Global Crypto Bank"

We’re still in the Netscape phase of crypto, according to Marshall Hayner, founder and CEO of Metal Payments, and the future is bright. Hayner sees regulation and user interface as the two pivotal factors affecting mass adoption. While 2021 saw a rapid acceleration of lobbying efforts as well as public-awareness initiatives, most governments still just don’t seem to get it and people are still using clunky software like Metamask. Hayner and his team at Metal are currently working to create browser-based and seamless crypto payment systems. In the very near future, though, the cumbersome tasks we assume are just part of the process will slowly ease as they are abstracted away by developers. The implications of what is a relatively simple shift are immense, according to Hayner, and he remains highly optimistic on the next decade in this space. Alkemi's Bridge Links the Old School to the New

More and more companies and more and more people want ready access to digital assets and related products and services. According to co-founder Brian Mahoney, Alkemi makes it happen by unlocking the “three Cs”: “capital,” through deep liquidity; “connectivity,” through Web2 and Web3; and “control,” through the ability to manage risk on its platform. Liquidity Is the Key to DeFi's Growth

He notes too that DeFi platforms like Celsius are able to offer yields around 6%, while traditional financial institutions are effectively at zero. Why Investors Miss Opportunities

“Don’t pay attention to the price. The price is not what matters. It’s the value that matters,” says Brian Estes, founder of Off The Chain Capital. Using various models, Estes joins Real Vision to explain how he values Bitcoin and why many investors miss opportunities when focusing on price rather than value. He believes Bitcoin prices are fair and could potentially reach as high as $10M in 2029. The founder of Off The Chain Capital recounts his own missed-opportunity story to put clients in Berkshire Hathaway at $8,300 a share in 1991. Today, that same share is worth over $400K, up more than 4,950%. Estes sees an even better opportunity in Bitcoin and compares it to the internet. Here's How Virtual Worlds Are Growing Faster Than Any Nation

Population growth in virtual worlds surpasses that of any nation today, a trend of keen interest to Richard Kim, general partner at Galaxy Interactive, unit of Mike Novogratz’s Galaxy Digital Asset Management. Under Kim’s guidance, Galaxy Interactive is the Lewis and Clark of the virtual frontier. “Self-sovereign digital natives,” as Kim refers to them, are people who have partially grown up in virtual environments and/or spend the majority of their spare time in them. Today, they’re mostly younger people, through Web 2.0 platforms like Fortnite and Roblox. The next phase – into the “Metaverse” – is about user empowerment. Kim is also eyeing DAO governance in the world of gaming. It’s still in the experimental phase. But the potential for a community-driven game – where development decisions are made by the people playing it – already marks a major shift from the status quo. The Sandbox: How to Distinguish the Metaverse from Gaming

The metaverse can look a lot like online video games. But what Sebastien Borget, COO and co-founder of The Sandbox, is trying to create is a parallel universe. Blockchain gaming manifests in various ways. Some developers simply utilize blockchain technology to mint in-game NFTs, while others are going so far as to grant DAOs governance over the game’s rules. It’s about giving users dominion over the virtual world they occupy. Interoperability – as in the ability for avatars, items, and currency to be transferred from one world to another – is key. Privacy is a topic that can be somewhat confusing within crypto. While Bitcoin can be transacted anonymously, its ledger is public, and privacy is not guaranteed. This system has its benefits, but it’s not the best for storing or transporting sensitive information at the individual or corporate level. Sebastian Bürgel, founder of HOPR, is bolstering one of the core founding pillars of crypto, using blockchain to preserve anonymity. He and his team at HOPR are aiming to implement a blockchain solution that keeps the importance of privacy at the forefront. The use cases in the privacy-blockchain realm are numerous and continue to grow. Bürgel, as a founder and programmer himself, gives viewers a technologist’s insights into a rich and growing field.
