Really Good At Starting Something ft. Weekend Creative

We’re kicking off today’s episode with one more Harry Potter cocktail (this one’s a smoky activated charcoal margarita called “Skele-Gro”), and some news… Today’s episode is going to mark the end of an era — AKA, the season finale for a very long season 1! 🥺🥳We’re so grateful for this podcast, the community, and all the stories this incredible show has taught us… and this ISN’T GOODBYE. We promise. We’ll be updating the podcast format to seasons for 2023 instead of weekly episodes, and we’ll still be staying on this account all the time to share funny content, memes, and all the relatable things. On this episode, you’ll get to hear about some real changes in our business (we’ve been SO busy) and the realization that we just can’t do it all… …but, like we said, it’s not goodbye. Promise. 💗 We’re knee-deep in prepping for season 2 already, so keep sending stories to us — and let us know if you have any suggestions for topics, guests, and/or sponsors! We’re here for it. Always. And we’ll be back so, so soon. Submit your stories and questions at perourlastemail.com, and we’ll do our best to read them as ridiculously as possible.Check out our lawyer approved contract: Commercial Photography AgreementFollow us on Instagram: @perourlastemail @weekendcreative

Super Keen To Make This Work ft. Emma Maja

Meet Emma Maja — our Australian gal (who joined us at a wildly early hour bc of the time difference!), who’s a freelance graphic designer, illustrator, AND dog accessory and apparel designer! Today we’re kicking off with another Harry Potter themed cocktail (AKA, a frozen midori sour with a twist called Polyjuice Potion), and Emma dives on in with us over an espresso martini. We got to hear how Emma’s product-based business has informed her service-based business, all the things she’s learned in and out of freelance, and her journey as a designer — anchored, of course, by some killer stories. Duh. First, we get to hear about the TRUE AUDACITY of a client whose mission was to “empower women” but, well… hint, hint, DIDN’T. They treated her horribly, kept hinting towards ~future work opportunities~ and asked her to lower her already low rates… and you’re gonna cringe when you find out how much work Emma did for way too little money. We also hear about a client who reached out via Facebook Messenger and gave Emma ~the ick~ for a project that ended up having a total lack of boundaries… as they sometimes do. We loved having Emma on the show and hearing about everything from her practical advice to the lessons she’s learned along the way to the mistakes she’s made — and it’s a really good one. You know what to do! 😌Follow Emma on IG at @emmamajadesign and check out her site at emmamajadesign.comCheck out her dog accessory and apparel brand: Dogs of CBRFollow us on Instagram: @perourlastemail @weekendcreative

I Need To Hear This Song ft. Jason B. James

Today, meet Jason B. James —  an incredible food and beverage photographer by day and DJ by night! We kicked off this episode with another Harry Potter-themed cocktail (we named this one Reparo — a gin cranberry sour inspired by Command Z, AKA the Photoshop shortcut that saves our lives). We loved hearing about how Jason transitioned from being a behavioral therapist to a photographer (AND a DJ) — and he told us how he describes his work as a little surreal, almost “like you microdosed” when looking at it. #weloveit You’ll get to hear about one of Jason’s events from hell during a NYE DJing gig gone wrong annnnnd his last straw before deciding freelance life was going to have to be the life for him. Because, as we all know… sometimes freelancing can be ROUGH, but man oh man is it better than anything else. 😂 Tune in now, pals!Submit your stories and questions at perourlastemail.com, and we’ll do our best to read them as ridiculously as possible.Follow Jason on IG at @jason.b.james and check out his website at jasonbjamesphoto.comFollow us on Instagram: @perourlastemail @weekendcreative

A Louis Vuitton Box ft. Halves Studio

Who knew Per Our Last Email would be getting into unsolved mystery podcast territory? 👀 Our friends Cierra and James of Halves Studio, an incredible lifestyle + studio photography hybrid based in Brooklyn, NY, joined us on today's episode with a rather mysterious story. I mean... it's not every day you get shipped a 6-7K Louis Vuitton purse... Anywho... we dove right in over a couple of Butterbeer cocktails as Cierra and James shared their journey in creating Halves Studio, what it's like to run a photography studio with your life partner, their current relationship with social media, and the time a client told Cierra she'd be a "perfect fit" to create video content for their mom and baby product line. (Spoiler alert: she's not a mom)...but honestly, how on earth does a Louis Vuitton bag just magically appear on one's doorstep?! Asking for a friend...Help us solve this mystery and listen on in. 🔍 You know you’re sitting on a good story that you’re just dying to share. Send it into perourlastemail.com. Did Something Upload Incorrectly? ft. Four Course Media

In today’s episode, you get to meet the incredible women behind Four Course Media, Rylee and Laura! We’re kicking off this episode during the massive heat wave in San Jose (um, 108 degrees?! Bye), and Rylee & Laura contributed the cocktail for this month’s HARRY POTTER COCKTAIL THEME ✨ We dove in over a fernet and vermouth spritz cocktail named “The Leaky Cauldron” and talked about how they went from meeting in a Slack group for freelance photographers to starting their studio, which offers imagery, styling, recipe development and branding consulting for food and beverage brands. In the ep you’ll get to hear about how they style food with real, fresh ingredients, tackle food waste in the industry, and run their business living in different places (Rylee’s based in Denver and Laura in Chicago). You’ll also get to hear about a very insane, traumatic story (ugh) with a ridiculous, stressful, and absolute jerk of a client who was full of red flags — like, hi… can we NOT with clients who do things like nitpick, delay, and, um… send emails like “Did something upload incorrectly? The colors in these photos are not showing up as expected. Do you mind checking the link to see if that’s what you meant to send?” LIKE YES IT IS WHAT WE MEANT TO SEND, PHIL.* *Not the client’s real name. 😂 Anyways, this is a good one — and we can’t wait for you to tune in!Submit your stories and questions at perourlastemail.com, and we’ll do our best to read them as ridiculously as possible.Follow Laura and Rylee on IG at @fourcoursemedia and check out their website at fourcoursemedia.comFollow us on Instagram: @perourlastemail @weekendcreative

She Was Always... Somewhere ft. Megan Rizzo

Today we’re talking to the incredible Megan Rizzo, an amazing creative, artist, and illustrator who’s worked with tons of companies (hello… like MTV, Sony, and BET!) — and we’re kicking off with a delightful college-themed cocktail that plays off of Jungle Juice, called “Welcome to the (Freelance) Jungle.” (Megan’s a new mom who’s taking it a little more low-key than we are, so she’s enjoying an apple juice mimosa while we breathe in memories of frat houses. Sigh.) There’s absolutely nothing better than a multi-faceted conversation about all the things, which is exactly how our conversation with Megan went — starting diving into her work, which she describes as “playful, bold, and comforting,” and how she draws inspiration from herself and her own struggles in her work (which includes #casual things like illustrating and writing children’s books). So freakin’ cool. Our favorite part of every guest ep is getting to hear stories from our fellow freelancers, and Megan tells us about a client who had wildly unrealistic expectations (AKA they wanted her to completely change her style) which obvi resulted in endless revisions… Oh and we also get to hear about an inquiry she received asking her to illustrate ✨sexual encounters✨ for a sexual poetry book. Ah, we love it. Can You Just Confirm If Those Are Your Photos Or Not?

And we are BACK with a good ole’ stories episode… arguably our most audacious one ever, so get ready! College cocktail month is still going strong, so we’re sipping on the lovely Adios, Mother****** that we’ve aptly renamed A Magical Freelancer, and kick off telling you guys about the ~audacity~ of a company who wanted to buy our images for $15 each. Love it. But, we digress — because the stories we have this week are INSANE. First, we hear from a listener whose client simply could NOTTTT understand why her prices had raised from pre-pandemic times — and who decided that she didn’t agree with renewal of licensing and usage, either. #nothx. Then we hear about a listener who got on a call with a potential client, only to LITERALLY hear the phrase “oh NO, we don’t work with budgets, it’s more about VALUE for us…” when she was explaining her budget. Spoiler alert… this means they didn’t want to pay. 😅 Then we have a commercial photographer from the food space talk about a vvvv passive-aggressive email from a potential client asking if the photos in her proposal were… HER PHOTOS (well yes, duh!), and shows us the email exchange. And then, to wrap up the most audacious stories episode yet, we have a really fun (AKA, triggering) story about an incredibly picky client who did not give AF about her having COVID or her instilling any kind of client boundaries. Oof. It’s a lot, huh?! Tune in to hear the tea. 🤟Send your most audacious stories, thoughts, highs and lows to perourlastemail.com.Forever accepting memes, gifs and stress-relieving videos via IG, too. They Kept Calling ft. Lina Cordero of Onlychild Design

Today’s episode kicks off with Lina Cordero of Onlychild Design, a branding and design studio, and we’re OBSESSED WITH HER… as you’ll be able to tell in this ep. 🤩 We’re continuing our theme of college cocktails this month (much to Elle’s distaste LOL), and drinking jager bombs we’ve called “Bomb Dot Com” — an ode to feeling of having amazing projects you’re proud of — and slightly wishing we were drinking palomas like Lina was. But, we digress. Lina talks about how and why she started Onlychild Design (um, hint… in her last corporate job, she was LITERALLY asked to make changes to a project while she was in labor. No thx), and we talk about good ole client red flags, picking the right clients, and NOT having a business you have to treat like a child. Then, as usj, we get to hear some incredible stories — including Lina’s worst ever discovery call (like, hi, a note to clients: can you not ask us ~why we’re having this call~ when you’re the one that booked it?!), a pro bono client who decided to reach out for changes almost 3 years later, being asked to work during labor, and when she accidentally deleted all of her client work from her computer. *dies* It’s seriously a good one, friends — head over to listen on in!Send your most audacious stories, thoughts, highs and lows to perourlastemail.com.Forever accepting memes, gifs and stress-relieving videos via Instagram, too.Follow Lina on IG at @onlychildesign and check out her website at onlychildesign.comView some of Lina's Adobe Live Streams: Part 1 and Part 2Follow us on Instagram: @perourlastemail @weekendcreative

I Was Trolled ft. Marina Williams

Imagine getting trolled for a year and receiving not one but SEVERAL inquiries by someone pretending to be Lady Gaga... 😅 Wellllll... you can stop imagining because it *actually* happened. To whom you may ask? None other than the ~fabulous~ Marina Williams. We're over here pinching ourselves because we got to chat with one of the sweetest and most talented creative photographers in the industry. Not only does she create stunning work but she's not afraid to share what she knows via all of her educational resources. And. We. Are. Here. For. It. 👏 In this ep, you'll get to hear about Marina's favorite college cocktail, her freelance journey, the time she got to photograph Olivia Rodrigo shortly after "drivers license" exploded, social media fatigue (so it's not just us?!),  and some of the toughest lessons she's had to learn while running her business. The Plumber Did The Work

On this week’s episode, we’re shakin’ it up with a good ole’ discussion topic… CONTRACT CLAUSES. But, before we dive in over key lime martinis (that we’ve named Offlime, because… #catchy), we get really, really real about the burnout and the exhaustion we’ve been feeling this past year — caused by the pandemic and by massive changes in our personal lives. We’re in this phase where we want to really focus on what’s important to us and what’s bringing us the most joy, you know?! We get a little deep, okay?! 😂 When we kick off our chat on contract clauses, we have a LOT to talk about — and a lot that you can probably relate to. We talk about copyright and licensing (and about how we’ve lost out on renewal fees and the like before we knew more about it), we talk about how we no longer release deliverables before final payment is made, and we also talk about the usability of the work we’re doing. It’s a good one —  basically an episode of Suits, minus Meghan Markle and absolutely any professional legal education. Psst… we’re running low on stories over here, and we’d love to hear yours! Small Time

Guys, is there anything better than a stories episode?! NOPE — and get ready for this one!  We’re still going strong with our OOO cocktail theme, and we kicked off this episode with a peach cocktail called “Less Work Mo Beaches” before talking about how we just recently celebrated 2 whole years of Per Our Last Email (!!!) and finished a Photography Bootcamp Adobe livestream that we had the time of our lives on! This stories episode is full of some goodies, starting off with a good ole’ fashioned SCAM ALERT (ugh, is there anything worse?!), talking about something we all now like to call the ✨bikini model debacle✨ and what happens when you connect your personal phone number to your Google My Business account. Elaborately Scammed ft. Lauren Jones

You know those cool, chic, insightful, and incredibly talented people that you see online and immediately want to be friends with? Yeah... that's Lauren Jones for us! 💫And she did NOT disappoint in this episode ya'll.  Long story short, we had the best time chatting it up with her about all things creative freelance, Colorado, portrait painting classes, Per Our Last Email's 2nd birthday, and her incredible Adobe Live that was one of our favorite streams we've hosted to date. Lauren also shares her journey into becoming a commercial fashion photographer, how being in the modeling industry helped her gain the trust of her clients, and the turbulent period when she quit her stable job to go freelance full-time DAYS before the COVID-19 lockdown.  😬Oh and don't worry, she's got her fair share of nightmare freelance tales including the time she got ELABORATELY scammed, a client asking Lauren to just "add a sleeve" because the model's arms "look a little hairy," and the time she worked with a celebrity influencer who asked Lauren to digitally slim her down just so she could post the photos on her feed accompanied by captions like "love yourself the way you are."  Big YIKES. It truly was a "pie in the sky" type of episode and we. are. here. for. it. 🥧 Send us your stories already. Let's Call Her Bill

We’re back with a STORIES EPISODE! But, tbh, we’re only really halfway back — AKA, Arabela forgot to make the cocktails & we had to pause to, well… make them. If you needed an insight into what our lives are looking like right now, there you go 😂  We’re kicking off with a couple of tinto de veranos, a Spanish wine cocktail that we had literally every single day while filming our @domestika course in Spain. While we start sipping, we catch up by talking about Elle and her husband’s ~faux whole 30,~ Arabela’s new position as a cat lady, AND our thoughts on all things Stranger Things.  Then, we get into the stories — and they’re goodies. We talk about whether or not designers should require website credit at the bottom of their site designs, the CLASSIC TALE of someone sending over final files before final invoice (and our sweet listener describes this as when she “thought the freelance world was filled with rainbows, butterflies, paid invoices and common courtesy” 😂😭), and a good ole’ red flag client story involving a creepy home office meeting situation.  🥴🥴🥴 You know what to do, pals — let’s get into some freakin’ stories! And don’t forget to send in some wild tales of your own. 💀Submit your stories and questions at perourlastemail.com, and we’ll do our best to read them as ridiculously as possible.View Rache De Luna's website templates, courses, and tutorials: SquarestylistCheck out our lawyer approved contract: Commercial Photography AgreementFollow us on Instagram: @perourlastemail @weekendcreative

The Plot Thickens ft. Giulietta Pinna of Limonata Creative

This week, we’re stepping into the creative world of Giulietta Pinna of Limonata Creative and Prop Up Shop. We’re chatting over some piña coladas, AKA "I Need A Vacation," a classic recipe that we just had to bring back for this month's OOO theme. Giulietta is an art director, prop and set stylist based in the Baltimore/DC area and to say that she's killing the game is an understatement. Not only is Giulietta an inspiration in the work she creates, but she's been doing some amazing stylist advocacy work and has even put out a photo stylist contract template of her own. She's an icon, she's a legend, and she IS the moment. 👏 So, she joined us in this episode to talk about her wild freelance journey (which had her jumping from being a marketer to becoming a certified sommelier – say what!),  the challenges that stylists face in their industry today, and how she almost became a contestant on a tv show where participants have to guess whether an object is a food item or not... by taking a BITE of it. 😬 Oh, and then, she told us about a time when she was hired to art direct and style a luxury gift guide for a major publication but somehow they had an issue with crediting her roles correctly... *ugh* ...not to mention the body guards that hovered over her while she styled a 52K ring. Freelancing is truly wild and Giulietta had no shortage of stories in this ep! You know what to do. 🎙 You know you’re sitting on a good story that you’re just dying to share. Paper Trail ft. Little Drill and Weekend Creative | Part 2

And, we’re BACK with part 2 of our 100th episode, feat. our BFFs at Little Drill! On this episode we’re diving in with James and Shelby’s most horrifying horror story — but we, of course, have to kick off with a random convo about Harry Styles and then how they’ve already been checking on their emails prior to this recording sesh and are already #bitter.Hence, the name of this episode's cocktail (which, reminder, are basil & lemon spritzes named ”Don’t Be Bitter”).James and Shelby’s story happened during a campaign with a top East Coast agency on two brands that we can GUARANTEE you’ve both consumed and bought. Lovely. This is a nice mixture of unrealistic expectations and a lack of boundaries, and it’s also a project that James and Shelby realized almost immediately they should have said “uh… no” to.Sigh.You’ll get to hear about firing a model who had too many wrinkles on her hands, about absolutely insane editing requests post-shoot, and a good ole’ realization that the ethos of the brand they were shooting for did NOT align with their public image.Episode’s live — you know what to do! 🥳Send us your stories already. Pleasure Based Billing ft. Little Drill and Weekend Creative | Part 1

Guys… WE MADE IT TO OUR 100TH EPISODE! 🥳🥳🥳 And, to celebrate, we’re bringing back our BFFs, James & Shelby of Little Drill, for a 2-parter episode (because, let’s be honest… if we didn’t split it up, you’d be listening to a 4 hour episode). This time, we’re both sharing an absolutely insane story over… …and the Weekend Creative fam (AKA, us) is up first. We’re diving in over basil & lemon spritzes aptly named ”Don’t Be Bitter,” which will make perfect sense once you hear today’s story.  🙃🙃🙃 So we’ve teased this story a few times on the pod, but now we’re sharing ALL the drama (now that we’ve recovered slightly from the trauma of it) with our god-awful landlords from our first studio… and all of the HELL we went through for the 2 years we leased that space. We’re talking about homeless people peeing and pooping in our stairs (and leaving needles, k?!), our zero-boundary landlord who didn’t let us change the temperature on our own, and the worst communication we’ve ever experienced. Oof. Plus, we’ll casually drop a little story in there about the time we almost got sued. 😭😂 And then, we’ll be back next week with Part 2, featuring Little Drill’s story of a nightmare project where everything went wrong, absolutely nothing went right, and ended with them blacklisted from one of the top ad agencies in NYC.Send us your stories already. We Crashed Into His Farm ft. Elise Swopes

On this week’s episode, meet Elise Swopes — AKA, one of the sweetest, coolest chicks on the internet and an all-around amazing human being and creative. Elise is a whole vibe (she came on wearing a fuzzy orange jacket, orange clips, AND had an orange drink & straw — we love to see it), and we dove in with a pink grapefruit spritz cocktail named “Pink Outside the Box.” We talked a lot about Elise’s super unconventional journey, about graduating college late (she just got her degree, so cool!), and about how NFTs have changed her whole career. We also get to hear about an event she photographed in Chicago that featured a really disconcerting, uncomfortable side of borderline animal cruelty and the time she ended up being on a hot air balloon that crashed — yes, CRASHED! — while working with a tourism board. Never a dull day, huh?! We also get to hear about passing on projects that don’t align, the weirdest inquiry she’s ever received, and what she’s learned about herself on her creative journey. They’re Going To Burn In Hell ft. Josiah Goldsmith

This week on Per Our Last Email we’re hanging out with graphic designer and artist Josiah Goldsmith! We jump right in over a cocktail we group-named “My Money Don’t Jiggle Jiggle, It Aperol” (LOL), and get to talk about all things British accents and South Korea culture with Josiah, who is — you guessed it — a Brit living in SK! We touched on a ton of topics during this episode, which is our very favorite kind of ep. From exploring creativity to the Korean design industry and everything in between, we really got into it (especially since it was only 8:30 AM for Josiah and he was drinking a cocktail right alongside us)! Josiah talks about a client with a Clip Art-esque logo who told him that he was demonic and the anti-Christ (yes… you read that right), and also talks about working with a client who hadn’t been paying him… only to realize that the business owed designers over $200,000 in total. 5 Seconds Away From Making A Voodoo Doll ft. Jenn Shore

On today’s episode you get to meet Jenn Shore, the badass behind design agency Shore Creative (and our triplet flame — she wore a jumpsuit that said “tipsy” during our interview. Iconic). Over “Grey Rocking” cocktails we dove into learning how to turn failure into success and all about Jenn’s journey as an entrepreneur. We also heard about how she wants to become a “freelance matchmaker” of sorts, which is fab. We also got to listen tons of great stories — with notes! — about client red flags (like, no… you can’t have these assets until you pay me, ok?!), when an influencer stole her designs (🙃🙃🙃), and a good ole’ client meets block button action. Don't You Remember Me?

You guys know there are few things we love more than a great stories episode, and we’re starting off this week’s with a bang (AKA… stories). We’re diving in over citrusy cocktails named “Can I Pay You With (Sun) Exposure?” and cuddling with Elle’s new dog Cooper, who says hello at the beginning of the episode. (Bringing light to the clients who ask to pay you in exposure, ya know?) In this episode we hear about a freelancer who ended up doing a 12-hour trial shift — ugh, unpaid, of course — for an assistant job, a story that actually ends up being really helpful around how and why to fire a client, and some crazy wedding photo stories… including a bride who he later saw on Bumble. Ah. The freelance life is just such a charm. Psst… have some charm you want to share with us?! We’re always accepting new freelancer stories and would love to hear from you! (Mean Girls anyone?) And by cool, we mean… she’s a little different. 👀 We’re veering away from our usual format to bring you a little minisode where we catch up, share our honest thoughts about what it meant for us to take time off, how we’re managing post-break, our love/mostly hate relationship with social media (can we all join forces and start our own platform already? 😅) and some tips on how to prepare yourself for an *actual* vacation as a freelancer. On this week’s podcast we’re hanging out with our IG friend turned pod guest, creative photographer and artist Suzanne Clements! We’re talking about alllll the things (and red flags) with grapefruit, cranberry, and vodka cocktails named “What a Breeze,” which is aptly named for the best kind of clients AND Suzanne’s Florida livin’. We dove in talking about Suzanne’s journey to photography and why she loves the kind of work she does before getting to hear about her insanely cool personal project called relax.rehab (think: 80s pop and synth music meets imagery — seriously so fascinating). Then we got to hear some of Suzanne’s WILD client experiences, including a ~wildly inappropriate~ male client who told her to try out some nipple balm for her boyfriend (ugh. ew) and a client who expected her to somehow have access to a private jet for photos. Sigh. Do you ever just…? Because we do, too. Alright, friends! I'm Never Going To See That Money ft. Alex Baxter

And we’re BAAAAAAACK! On this week’s episode, we’re finally welcoming our hilarious Scottish friend Alex Baxter (whose accent we LOVE, as you’ll hear). We’re diving in over tequila guava nectar cocktails we’ve concocted called “You Guava Be Kidding Me,” AKA how we’re all going to respond to anyone who annoys us from now on. Alex has been a longtime IG friend and POLE star (we’ve shared a couple of his stories on the pod already, like a two-word response he got after sending a proposal: Too expensive.), and we had so much freakin’ fun talking about everything from green and red flags to Scottish freelance culture to his work as a photographer and graphic designer in the hospitality industry. On this episode, you’ll get to hear about Alex’s stories about a client who essentially wanted to pay him with… a cake (ugh, the red flags we look past as green baby freelancers…), a broken hard drive with photos on it from a MICHELIN STAR RESTAURANT (#cries :’)), and a really fun shoot with a yoga instructor that ended with the saying “I’M COMING, I WILL FIX YOUR TITTIES!” LOL, you just have to listen — there’s a lot to unpack. Ready to unpack it with us?! See you soon! You know you’re sitting on a good story that you’re just dying to share. Send it into perourlastemail.com. Revisiting Now Rachel, I'm Poor...

…Honestly, there are no words.Do you all go and search for the weirdest clients ever, just to entice us? Are you forever in the pursuit of a good meme?Actually, don’t answer that.We can’t really “allude” to anything in this episode, without just blatantly calling it out. It’s a stories episode. There are mentions - nay, allegations - of instances of hormonal imbalances, 💩 clipart, “can you turn this word document into a website?” and Michael Scott Paper Company-esque set ups.Told you.Like literally, a client asked a flourishing business owner and freelancer (i.e., story submitter) to theme her entire website around DOG POOP.THIS IS NOT A DRILL 🆘🚨SOMEONE CALL 911, WE WANT OUR PEACE OF MIND BACK!!!Anyways, this episode made us lose any chill we ever believed we might have had. Oh, it also includes a well-written, sumptuously performative and foreboding poem for all creatives. In other words, you’re going to squeal, love it, squeal, scream, cry and then laugh. What would you do without us?Don’t force us to sit and talk about ourselves, pls and thsnks. Revisiting I Could Have Made This In 5 Min ft. Elliot Ulm

It’s true. @elliotisacoolguy.A very cool guy.A guy who runs a flourishing creative business, but a guy who isn’t very good at freelancing, nonetheless.Yeah, we said it. (only because he did 👀)In fact, Elliot is such a cool guy, he decided to join the coolest podcast on earth (that’s us), to discuss all of the incredibly important things about being a freelancer. You know, things like his love for Caramel Macchiatos, and our dialogue on lattes vs. french press, backyard kangaroos that’ll punch you, ginormous spiders (i.e., “husband” spiders according to Arabela), inches vs. whatever it is that they measure things in, and talking to himself in the shower.✨Just normal WFH, self employed things✨So let’s tally that up. Elliot:*Lives in Australia, mate*Agrees that their spiders are huge*Loves a Starbies Caramel Macchiato*Doesn’t believe he’s a good freelancer. Even though he’s built a wildly successful business and amassed over 100k followers.OK ELLIOT.Don’t worry, we eventually move on from the kangaroos and spiders to talk about his journey into graphic design, as well as his fair share of crazy client stories. Then, we put the cherry on top of a *very cool* episode to discuss his journey to creating passive income, without even using a website.Elliot. Is. A. Very. Cool. Guy. Revisiting The Spoon Spiel

Remember that time you paid your rent in popsicle sticks? No?Well, what about spoons?Still no?Weird, because we could’ve SWORN that it was considered socially acceptable to pay for the important things in life with inanimate objects. Just like it’s okay to pay for creative work (i.e., photography) with anything other than money, right?*scream cough scream cough*Yeah so, someone had the audacity to attempt to reason with someone else that paying for work with their spoons was acceptable. Thousands of dollars’ worth of spoons. That’s a lot of spoons. You can imagine our response to that.Sigh.And then someone else dealt with a homeless person running off with their prop food. Because that’s the big city, baby. Is that why they call it the Big Apple? And then you’ll hear us discuss our attempt to fly with 25 lbs of sand and food poisoning, how Elle enslaved her childhood friends, and why lowering scope > lowering rates. It’s a lot. Are you ready to get angry about spoons?Subscribe, listen, follow, pay and sponsor us, k? Sue Me For What? ft. Claire Xue of Moodelier

On this week’s episode, we’re welcoming our longtime friend and fellow creative, Claire Xue of Moodelier! Over mezcal hibiscus sours we’ve named “Taking Care of Business” we dove in quickly to talk about everything from insecurities and old stories to enneagrams and Reddit.  We looooove a tangent! We have been wanting to get Claire onto the podcast for a long time, so it was so freakin’ fun to hear more about her start with Moodelier, the things she’s learned as a creative and a brand owner, and taking risks in business. We heard about a situation when she was on visa and at a seeeeerious disadvantage with a client, clients with LOTS OF OVERPROMISES, and some good ole’ red flags. We do love a red flag on the pod, huh? Okay, pals — are you ready to tune in?! See you there!Send us your stories already. More Like The Rolling Stones

We are the living embodiment of the “story time! WAKE UP!” TikTok sound this week, because we have some goooood stories to share… including some of our own! We’re pouring up a beer, whiskey, and shandy cocktail called “Feeling Dandy” and diving right on in with two different brands and sites who have hijacked the heck out of our images here recently and then absolutely destroyed them with some truly, truly #terrible Photoshop action. Ah. Nothing like the sweet smell of copyright infringement. In this stories ep, you’ll get to hear some good ole’ pain-in-the-ass client stories (it happens), fun stuff from a client who decided to launch 3 (!!!) businesses at the same time but didn’t want to pay full-price for the branding — because of course — and some confusing, rockstar-esque, what-does-it-MEAN feedback one freelancer got from a university marketing team. Plus, we’re musing on the difference between commercial work, personal work, and art… which turned out to be a great convo. So, story time! WAKE UP! (Can you tell we’ve been watching lots of TikTok…? But, really — have fun!) You know you’re sitting on a good story that you’re just dying to share. Send it into perourlastemail.com. You Can't Wear Shorts ft. Megan Galante

This week, we’re so freakin’ honored to have artist Megan Galante on! We’re keeping with our beer month theme, and dove right into this convo alongside a half Guinness, half cider cocktail we coined “The DM Slitherer.” This episode kicks off with a little fangirling, a quick Anna Delvey tangent, and all things wine (we love an off topic moment, ok?!) — before we start digging into Megan’s journey. She’s such a cheerleader for others, which we LOVE, and it was so fun to hear about how she merged her passion for mixing art and interiors into an actual career. You’ll also get to hear alllll the hilarious and relatable stories and experiences she’s had along the way, including a freelance experience involving a basement AND a wardrobe ~malfunction~ situation, a reminder to be careful about the platforms you’re working with out of the country, and the super fun (#sarcasm) time that a fast fashion brand used her work online without her permission. Plus, you’ll even get to hear a special appearance from Megan’s cat, Chester. We love Chester. Ready to tune in? You Should Get Paid For This ft. Keegan Evans

This week on the pod, we’re diving deep with Keegan Evans, a photo and video content creator and educator (and one of our fav follows, always!). We’re drinking beer cocktails again, a la micheladas we’ve called “Chel-of-a-lada Money,” even though… Arabela isn’t a beer gal and Keegan went rogue with a mojito. The sacrifices we make for the pod. 😅 On this episode, we started with Keegan’s origin story as the founder of a high-protein waffle business, and how it led him to finding his true passion… AKA, product photography. We dove deep into all things small biz life, including the time in the early days when Keegan pitched a (painfully) all-inclusive package including design, photo, video, and social for… $500. We live, we learn, huh?! You’ll also get to hear about a realllllly fun experience he had on a shoot where someone from the team LITerally watched him on Zoom. While he was, you know, working. We die. We also talked about the importance of licensing, freelance pet peeves, and an inquiry Keegan got from someone who wanted to literally *live* with him while he taught them photography. Anyways. We’ve been absolutely living for the stories episodes lately, and today we’re giving you another jam- (and humor-) packed ep full of ‘em! After we both give you a WebMD update on our lives, we’re kickin’ off a new month with beer-inspired cocktails. This one is a root beer float situation with chocolate ice cream (!!!), aptly named “Rooting for You.” On this episode, you’ll get to hear a wild medley of freelancer perfect storms, as you do. From a bizarre photo trip featuring kitchen rats and a pirate trip to a marketing bro (ugh) who “hates working with freelancers” all the way to good ole’ unprofessionalism in the workplace and one of the most… incredible… email responses we’ve ever seen, we’ve got quiiiiiite the lineup. (Do you want a hint? It is literally a 2 word response, saying “Too expensive.” Smh.) The way we see it, we have to smile through the pain… so come smile with us! This week, we’re sitting down with two of our pals, Alexis and Max of Colors Collective — a next-level creative content studio based out of Brooklyn, NY! We’re sippin’ mocktails turned, well… cocktails this week (sometimes you just gotta add mezcal), and we aptly named them “The Dream Client.” (Psst… you’ll understand why we added mezcal to a ~dream client~ once we get started on their story.) We were squealing-level excited to get Alexis and Max on the pod, and we loved getting to listen about how they fell in love working together (!!!), the growth that Colors Collective has experienced over the years, and the importance of taking a nice long break. In this episode, we’re digging into some wiiiild stories, like the horrible realization that your dream client is really the worst kind of client… ever (we’re talking ghosting before payment and all of that fun stuff… ugh). Plus, Arabela shares a story about the time she had completely forgotten 2 v important props on set. As we say, we’re all in this together… for better *and* for worse. LOL. This week, meet the incredible Juan Cazares, AKA the face behind @juanskindiary! We’re sippin’ mocktails this week thanks to De Soi — this one is named “A True Champion — and we dove right in with Juan in between sips. We actually found Juan when one of his insanely ~top-tier~ TikToks made its way to IG Reels, and we were so excited to have him on the pod. Plus, he’s literally walking proof that you do *not* have to have crazy prior experience to make big moves. He worked at Home Depot before finding an obsession with skincare and becoming an insanely talented content creator. In this episode, we’re talking about all of the things, from clients who think it’s A-OK to text ya at 8 pm (side note: it isn’t) to the most draggy of client projects to the importance of reading — and enforcing! — your contracts. This week, we’re talking with the ultimate QUEEN, Denisse Myrick, who we’ve been waiting to get on the show for forever! We’re clinking our glasses with a pink martini called The Power Suit (shoutout to our friend @freshprintmedia for this one), and there’s so much goodness in this ep that we can’t even handle it. Denisse is a freelance photographer, brand strategist, influencer, and new mom who is, quite, honestly, the ultimate badass. We talked about how she broke into photography in VSCO’s heyday, about a little bit of “Annie Liebovitz jaded energy,” and about locking everything possible into her contracts so people can’t even try to mess with her. Like we said… queen. In this ep, we’re chatting about her most expensive lesson (uh… a $45K one), finding and building community as a freelancer, and our new favorite term — fresh hell. I’m Not A Makeup Artist ft. Mushaboom Studio

This week, we’re diving into all things creativity and freelancing with Laura Grace & Katie Lynn of Mushaboom Studio! We’re drinking a mocktail called “When Life Gives You Lemons” on this episode, which aligned perfectly with Elle’s car battery dying AND our computers cutting off every 5 dang seconds. Woof. Not For Me ft. Kelly Robyn

This week, we’re digging into all things creative freelancing with Kelly Robyn of K+C Collective over some deliiiightful Old Fashioneds that we’ve named “Make It Work” in honor of #icon Tim Gunn. Kelly is a serial entrepreneur and does alllll the things in her career, which is so fun — and quite similar to the roster of things we dig into over here at Weekend Creative. In fact, she got into the freelancing life with advice from her mom, who told her to create many paths… and it’s led her down LOTS of ‘em. In this episode, we’re diving deep into the journey that’s freelancing and entrepreneurship, talking about everything from the importance of rest and why it’s so important to *actually* step back, all the way to the client that inspired an intense refund clause in her contracts and owning her introvertedness in a creative career. They create vibrant and beautiful work that genuinely, genuinely put a smile on our faces, and they’re basically our freelance soul twins, because they met in college just like we did! In this pod, we got to dive deep into all things partnership + entrepreneurship, and it was so fun to talk about freelance life with another dynamic duo. In this episode, we’re talking allllllll the things, from red flags and weirdly intense contracts (hence the name of this week’s cocktail) all the way to hot mess express clients, and it’s just as hilarious as it is insightful. In ANY Capacity ft. Jen Thompson of Cashmere & Cocktails

It’s officially 2022, and we’re welcoming in the new year with Jen Thompson of Cashmere & Cocktails over *strong* cocktails, because, well… duh. And, because we love a good connection point, this cocktail is called Long Nights, which is a good reminder that, um, long nights sometimes require a strong pour. No shame. Jen is a longtime listener of the pod (she says she catfished us into having her on, but we just really like her :) ), and is a food photographer and content creator based in New Brunswick. When she’s not developing rich, indulgent dishes and cocktails, she’s cracking us all up — in fact, she’s responsible for the ~infamous spoon spiel reel~ that still makes us snort. Is there anything better than someone who is funny as hell AND makes good cocktails? No. In this ep, we dove in deep to tons of things, as usj. From the coining of the term “freelance fetus” and free product exchange services (eek!) to truly laughable rate offerings and a phase where ~adult toy companies~ kept reaching out to her for reviews — to which Jen said “I make cupcakes…. I Gave Him A Hug ft. Anna McNaught

We have a full-circle moment this week to celebrate our 75th episode! We got to hang out with Anna McNaught over a delightful mulled wine cocktail called “Mulling It Over” (thanks Mushaboom Studio) and talk #allthethings — and, for those of you who might not remember, Anna was actually who we started Per Our Last Email with forever ago! 🎙Anna is a digital artist, photographer, and graphic designer AND the coolest traveler… ever. Her and her husband run a travel biz called Leave the Map where they create content for tourism boards and outdoor brands, *and* they just bought their first home after spending the last few years living the ~nomad life~ in a traveling van. 🚌Casual. In this episode we talked about everything under the sun, including our (not-so-nice) thoughts about the IG algorithm and the weird AF Meta rebrand situation. Quite the rant, you know?! We got into Anna’s journey into freelancing, talking about her first freelance graphic design project — which was a v uncomfy experience, all for a $50 (yes, $50) project she didn’t even get paid for — and the time she accidentally interviewed for an escort service. Yes. You read that right. 😬And, we end the episode talking about how incredibly important it really and truly is to be gentle with ourselves and to allow ourselves to take breaks. We loved it when she said, “we have our entire lives to work on these things that we’re passionate about.” Alright, pals — let’s do this! 👏Round 75, on deck. Send us your stories already. Um... No... ft. Lindsay Ernst of Ink + Ellie

Lindsay Ernst of Ink + Ellie came to hang out with us on this week’s episode of the pod — over a v delicious, pregnancy-friendly cocktail that we named “Give Me a Break,” of course — and it was the most delightful, Dunder Mifflin-esque kinda ep. Lindsay is a visual branding, packaging, and website designer in the Bay Area, and we’re infatuated. See, here’s the thing: you guys KNOW we love The Office, and we actually met Lindsay when Elle hosted her on Adobe Live while she rebranded Serenity by Jan. Hooked. From the start. ~”I just come in here, and I SMELL MY CANDLES.”~ (Anyone? Plz? Andy and Jim, do you wanna invest in Per Our Last Email?! We’re way more level headed than Jan Levinson, promise.) In this episode we talked about everything from The Office (duh) and client red flags to a v unique request she got from a client…. i.e., to Photoshop… Halle Berry’s head… on a stock image. Oh, the freelance life, you guys. What. A. Trip. Plus, Lindsey left us some really, really good insights on growing when you want to, instead of feeling like you need to. She said, “you can stay small and still live a really fulfilled design life,” and it really connected. You ready to jump in? Let’s go. My Final Text ft. Steven Lee

Steven Lee joined us on this week’s episode — over heavily poured tinto de veranos — and we can’t wait for you to pop this goodness into your earbuds. Steven is a freelance fashion & commercial photographer based in LA, and his colorful style is a freakin’ dream.  (Add on the fact that he’s a longtime listener of Per Our Last Email, and, like… we’re obsessed 🤷‍♀️) He also has an on-point reels game (we die at this one 😂 DO IT. DO IT THEN.), and he’s hilarious. Truly, our cheeks all hurt from laughing at the end of the recording, which is how you know it’s a good one. We dove deep in this episode into all of the things and then some, from his plans to take a creative sabbatical and his first ever NYFW experience to his not-so-great photography experiences, like when a fashion brand decided not to pay him because they thought it was a ~collaboration.~ K. I Am Not Your Hun

*picture us dressed as a therapist (how do they dress?), with steepled fingers*There’s a lot to unpack in this episode.A LOT.We’ll preface everything we’re about to say by letting you know that we chose the title of this episode’s cocktail far before we even hit record. And yet, as we continued to read the stories you had to share, we realized just how applicable our cocktail really was. The title of this week’s drink? “Man down.”That should set the stage. In today’s episode, you get to hear us mentally switch gears as we record… because we were supposed to have an incredible guest join us today, but he’s a new dad and had to reschedule minutes before joining us due to a slight daycare emergency 💩 (hence why “Man Down” felt so fitting)So thankfully, we had some incredible stories to pull from your submissions. One about a prop stylist who dealt with a sick man in a basement, and another about a client who stole a $10 toy to “donate to charity.”Yes, like Creed from The Office with the Toys for Tots Christmas donation box. And then, we have more stories about client red flags, scope creep and being ghosted! See? And Then They Just Blocked Me ft. Becki Sinclair of The Good Type Co

Guys, we have a thing for Australians. We’ll finally admit it. Not that it’s a surprise or anything. After having several friends from down undah join us to chat, scream (we scream because it’s not very Australian to scream, as we’ve learned), laugh and rant, we’ve fully accepted the fact that deep down, we believe we might’ve been born on the wrong continent. Why are we rambling about this, you ask? Naturally, because we had another incredible, inspirational and might we say *talented* Australian creative join us today: none other than Becki from The Good Type Co! Like honestly… go take one glance at her feed, and you’ll see exactly why we wanted her to join the podcast ✏️✨Not only is Becki an inspiration in the work she creates, but she illustrates our favorite thing: food.Food, people. 🍳🥘So, Becki joined us to chat about her life as an illustrator while running a shop during extreme lockdown, fighting creative blocks, and how she got into illustration. Then, she told us about the time that a client asked, “what’s your hourly rate?” in a room full of people, while all eyes were on her. Q&A with Little Drill

Today, we turn 50! And we don’t look or feel a day over 52 😏The big five-oh is not one to hastily record or miss, so we knew we needed to pull out all the stops. We had options… we could book an amazing interview (but they’re all amazing, so how do you choose?), we could read some insane stories… or we could do something a bit different. We went for something different. In the pursuit of recording something different, we decided to host a Q&A episode. But because Q&A episodes where the same podcasters ask themselves the same questions tend to be *cough* boring *cough*, we decided to do two things:1️⃣We asked you what questions you had for us, and decided to feature and answer them in today’s episode.2️⃣We invited everyone’s favorite duo, Shelby and James from Little Drill, to come and spice things up.And because a conversation between us and Little Drill is typically long winded and wrought with humor, confusion and chaos, we’ll go ahead and tell you the tale of our episode in as many words as possible.First, James tells us that he has a conspiracy theory that passionfruit doesn’t actually exist. Except he doesn’t say it’s a conspiracy theory, we say that now. Then, we shared our learnings after recording 50 episodes of chaos, bliss and more. THEN, we answered questions about topics like: how to turn down paid jobs and negotiate rates, our work schedule while balancing multiple projects and offers, and our most recent business mistakes. Next up, we shared two stories: one about two non-moldy apples, and another about a not alive, but not dead, but not stuffed cat paw project. And robots. How’s that for as many words as possible? Similar to our intros, we’re guessing. Ultimately, just remember James’ wise words: you don’t get free funnel cake at the fair.HAPPY 50TH 🎉Send us your stories already. Clients, Listen Up! ft. Hanad Ali

We know this might be hard to believe… but we didn’t become this rich and fabulous on our own 💁‍♀️Sure, we pour our hearts and souls into creating relatable memes. Some go viral, and we scream and cry. Others don’t, and we scream and cry (in a different way).Outside of that, though? Well, we’ve got a friend who created the most shareable, educational photography content (if you don’t recall, go back to our post from March 10th)… ever… which we happened to share on our page. And let us tell YOU - we did not expect the engagement and feedback we’d soon receive. 👀After hundreds and thousands of views, comments, shares and conversations, we realized it was time to bring in the one and only Hanad Ali - the very creator and photographer who took the time to share his knowledge with the world (and also blow this page up). Because the world deserves to know Hanad, and Hanad deserves to be introduced to the world.Don’t you think? So, Hanad joined us to discuss the viral post that changed a lot of things for countless creatives, as well as his recent transition to commercial photography (after 20 years in advertising). You’ll hear him discuss the importance of advocating for yourself and your pricing, why you should ask for data from your clients, and how to transition from a difficulty-based pricing model, to a value-based pricing model. And then you’ll hear us mispronounce things. It’s all relative. You know you wanna hear it.You know you’re sitting on a good story that you’re just dying to share. Send it into perourlastemail.com. Who Is This Kid? ft. Sasha Michkovsky

So, something big happened. And by “big,” we mean monumental. That’s what she said… kind of? Arabela finally admitted she needed to take time off, like a normal human being, after functioning on overdrive while editing this podcast AND serving as our sole photographer AND editor AND in-house snacker of unrefrigerated foods for @weekendcreative for the last year and a half. So yeah, it was a big deal. And that’s how we found Sasha. Sasha graced us with his presence at juuust the right time. You might recall us mentioning that our episodes might sound a bit more *elevated* moving forward, and Sasha’s the reason for that. Naturally, the moment Sasha stepped into our lives, we found part of our sanity again. As an example, Arabela had enough time to create today’s drink (aptly titled the Vacation Response, arguably stolen from her mom). Thanks Sasha 💁‍♀️ Anyways, we figured it was time to feature the man, the myth, the legend - the Sasha that fixed our audio and our lives. In today’s episode, Sasha shared a story about the time he had a media pass and snuck into *cough* a very famous NBA team’s *cough* locker room. And then we took some time to talk about our creative client process, while sharing one mindset shift that changed the way we did business. Like, forever. Forever ever. A Photoshoit

Once upon a time, in a world far, far too close to our own, a mean ogre (see: client) trolled the prettiest princesses in all the land (see: our photography business). The mean ogre no-showed not one, but two balls (see: phone calls), before subsequently sending the princesses mail via a certified pigeon (see: email). Except, the message was written *on* the pigeon (see: subject line), and the scroll (see: email again) was left blank. The mean ogre then had the AUDACITY to ask the pretty princesses, “What do you think about lowering your rates?” And the pretty princesses went ahead and tucked themselves in bed, deciding to wait until someone else wrote a better story, because they just could NOT anyMORE. ~ The end ~ We have 1000 questions and 1 million concerns. You probably do, too. In today’s stories episode, we of course shared our own VERY ANNOYING STORY (see: mean ogre and princesses above). We then heard about… *A weird magazine and ALL CAPS EMAILS ABOUT PHOTOSHOITS (typo included)*Creative predators*Secret post-it note inquiries*Hair and makeup for a hands-only shoot*A client’s visceral response to the color yellow*And the glorious feedback of: “I don’t know, I just don’t like it” So, yeah. The ogre? He was just the tip of the iceberg. Just know this - if anyone ever calls you “sis,” RUN. 🏃‍♀️ You know you’re sitting on a good story that you’re just dying to share. Cool, Thanks ft. Abbey McGrew of Wayfarer Design Studio

You know those sweet, soft-spoken people you meet that immediately make you think, “why would anyone ever want to hurt you”? Yeah, that’s Abbey from Wayfarer Design Studio for us 😌 We had the chance to speak with everyone’s favorite brand and web designer about all things freelancing and icky clients, including and not limited to… 👀 Abbey’s anything but ordinary journey into freelancing ✈️ Her life working abroad ❔ What it’s like to be a brand designer who doesn’t enjoy choosing colors (can’t relate) 🏫 Why educating your clients is a form of empowerment (which will make you feel better about over explaining) 🙃 Client feedback that makes you question your own work and worth 💭 Her thoughts on personal projects 👕 And Elle’s shirt (???????) If we’re honest, Elle’s shirt might be the most important part of our entire week. It’s only right. We knew you’d understand. You can sit there and not listen to the sweetest person discuss her ever-so-successful journey as a freelancer and creative, or you can join us. Nan, I've Gotta Go ft. Florence James Collective

Huzi and Jesse of Florence James Collective are two of the best people. Like, to the point where it makes the story they shared in today’s episode even more audacious. Because who DOES that to two people, who are so talented, funny, sweet, and kind? That we love so much? With our whole hearts? HOW DARE THEY? Right? Right. Huzi and Jesse joined today’s episode to tell us about their experiences as self-taught creative business owners, and their rise to photography and videography success. They expanded on their journey from nightclubs to Uber Eats, to butcher shops, to assembly lines and to finally running their own studio. They even shared their methodology behind becoming a one-stop shop for creative content and props. (Anyone else here a self-taught creative? Give us a 👋 below) So, that’s Huzi and Jesse. Two wonderful people, with one not-so-wonderful client. Without giving it all away, we’ll just summarize their client experience with a few *idiotic* one-liners. Please enjoy 👇 “Just pick up any other similar capsules (to shoot) at the store” (ahem - they’re a vitamin brand) “I don’t want video… but I DO want GIFs” “‘WE’ need to correct that” “Send me a screenshot to show it’s been fixed. Come on!” And we’re just going to warn you that “you guys will need to reshoot these” will definitely become a trigger. Sorry. But you’re voluntarily along for the ride 🤷‍♀️ This story gave our own linty gummies a run for their money. The Woman In The Closet

So, what’s your worst freelancing nightmare? We’ll start. Ours would likely include dropping the camera, falling on top of the set (like literally keeling over and just… falling on top of everything we’d spent hours putting together), and then maybe the computer catching fire with our clients standing right there. By the way, that’s all one nightmare. Another nightmare might be… oh, we don’t know… checking out your client’s house, and finding a tiny woman just standing inside an armoire? Just speaking from the perspective of an interior designer, of course. Anyways, what’s yours? (Yes, a tiny woman jumped out of an armoire and it’s in today’s stories episode. Jeez louise, you know how to get an answer outta someone, don’t you?) As if the episode needed anything more than THAT, we also shared our personal freelancing pet peeves. In the process, we once again made it clear that we are not the resource to refer to when it comes to weather, time zones, pronunciation… literally anything. ANNNNND then we shared more stories and found out that Arabela hid in a bathtub at a party (probably far more recently than she’s admitting). It’s a lot. We’re a lot. I Could Have Made This In 5 Min ft. Elliot Ulm

It’s true. @elliotisacoolguy. A very cool guy. A guy who runs a flourishing creative business, but a guy who isn’t very good at freelancing, nonetheless. Yeah, we said it. (only because he did 👀) In fact, Elliot is such a cool guy, he decided to join the coolest podcast on earth (that’s us), to discuss all of the incredibly important things about being a freelancer. You know, things like his love for Caramel Macchiatos, and our dialogue on lattes vs. french press, backyard kangaroos that’ll punch you, ginormous spiders (i.e., “husband” spiders according to Arabela), inches vs. whatever it is that they measure things in, and talking to himself in the shower. ✨Just normal WFH, self employed things✨ So let’s tally that up. Elliot: *Lives in Australia, mate*Agrees that their spiders are huge*Loves a Starbies Caramel Macchiato*Doesn’t believe he’s a good freelancer. Even though he’s built a wildly successful business and amassed over 100k followers. OK ELLIOT. Don’t worry, we eventually move on from the kangaroos and spiders to talk about his journey into graphic design, as well as his fair share of crazy client stories. Then, we put the cherry on top of a *very cool* episode to discuss his journey to creating passive income, without even using a website. Elliot. Is. A. Very. Cool. Guy. What Is A Problem?

There are few things we love more than criticizing crazy clients and commiserating with each and every one of you. Of those few things? Breakfast foods and serenading others against their will sit riiiight at the top 😏 And of course today’s episode features both. We know, we know - you don’t deserve the honor we bestow upon you. But really, who would? In today’s stories episode, you’ll get to hear our thoughts on breakfast food, and you’ll learn about some earth shatteringly important news for our studio: we got a new toaster. A TOASTER. Everything Is Ok In Some Sense ft. Maud Passini of Manureva Studio

(And by reasonable, we mean completely unreasonable) 👇 Would it be…. A) Okay great! Let me know what that package might look like.B) No problem at all!C) Oh, I didn’t realize you CHANGED THE TERMS ON ME. Truly, we’d love to know. You tell us 👀 It’s fine, we’re fine. Really. Now Rachel, I'm Poor...

… Honestly, there are no words. Do you all go and search for the weirdest clients ever, just to entice us? Are you forever in the pursuit of a good meme? Actually, don’t answer that. We can’t really “allude” to anything in this episode, without just blatantly calling it out. It’s a stories episode. There are mentions - nay, allegations - of instances of hormonal imbalances, 💩 clipart, “can you turn this word document into a website?” and Michael Scott Paper Company-esque set ups. Told you. Like literally, a client asked a flourishing business owner and freelancer (i.e., story submitter) to theme her entire website around DOG POOP. THIS IS NOT A DRILL 🆘🚨SOMEONE CALL 911, WE WANT OUR PEACE OF MIND BACK!!! Anyways, this episode made us lose any chill we ever believed we might have had. Who here enjoys linty gummies? 🙋‍♀️ Oh, you don’t? Okay, well prepare to be triggered. And just know that linty gummies are just the tip of the iceberg of today’s episode 👀 In fact, by the end of today’s episode, you’ll wish that our very own story about burning bridges with a crazy client stopped at linty gummies, and didn’t embark into what can only be explained as no WOman’s land. Interested yet? 😌 We’re trying here. We had the pleasure of bringing our day 1 supporter and BFF Juan Miranda along for today’s episode. Juan (also known as @jmibaby, get it right) did the job that nobody else was willing to do: he sat through a very, very long story that we were just about dying to share. He sat through a story of linty gummies. Body shaming. False advertising. AND MORE. It’s a sticky episode. Oh, and Juan also had the grace to share his thoughts on content creation strategy and influencer marketing - because the world really doesn’t need more sunglass and eyelash sponsorships. But the moment you try to keep us from going to Target (also known to many as Tarjé) with our moms? It’s not like we’d ever be weird enough to rant for no apparent reason at all 👀 Anyways, back to the tidbits and stories that make us cringe. You’ll hear things like... ❓ When clients try to walk you through everything they don’t trust you on, and then claim that they still trust you (?) Like okay, fact checkers needed. Thsnks ❓ “As a start up, every dollar counts” (CRINGE) ❓ Email subject lines that look like your ex’s most recent late night text messages ❓Clients who want to be cheap, yet refuse to learn simple tasks for THEMSELVES Again, just *few* tidbits and cringeworthy details, that’s all. The Spoon Spiel

Remember that time you paid your rent in popsicle sticks? No? Well, what about spoons? Still no? Weird, because we could’ve SWORN that it was considered socially acceptable to pay for the important things in life with inanimate objects. Just like it’s okay to pay for creative work (i.e., photography) with anything other than money, right? *scream cough scream cough* Yeah so, someone had the audacity to attempt to reason with someone else that paying for work with their spoons was acceptable. Thousands of dollars’ worth of spoons. That’s a lot of spoons. You can imagine our response to that. Sigh. And then someone else dealt with a homeless person running off with their prop food. Because that’s the big city, baby. Is that why they call it the Big Apple? And then you’ll hear us discuss our attempt to fly with 25 lbs of sand and food poisoning, how Elle enslaved her childhood friends, and why lowering scope > lowering rates. It’s a lot. Buckle Up ft. Janea Greene of Creative Space Studios

What’s worse than a horrible client who turns out to be a thief, you ask? Oh, we don’t know… probably a horrible client who turns out to be a two-timing thief, and whose story gets shared by two different creatives. Yeah, so we’ll just go ahead and say it: today’s episode with Janea Greene from Creative Space Studios includes a few things: our thoughts on Dr. Pepper versus Mr. Pibb (Mr. Pibb is trash), the highs and woes of being a creative and owning a business, annnnnd the story of someone who can only be described as a thief with the audacity to mess with one other lovely listener of this podcast (hiii Emily 👋) before making her way to Janea. Like really, who gets honey on a toilet seat and leaves a birthday cake out in a studio for 24 hours? Somebody who gets talked about TWICE in the span of 35 episodes, that’s who. The Fire Department Showed Up ft. Marke Johnson of The Made Shop

We get the idea of ghosting when there’s something to gain from it. And by “get” we mean we don’t actually get it, but it makes more sense than ghosting someone after paying them. Like, are you in the business of giving money away? If so, send 👻 our way, pls and thanks. So anyways, back to our point. It’s one thing to be a jerk and to ghost someone BEFORE paying them. It’s like a take-backsie of all of the time and energy that you and the other person invested into your relationship. It’s another thing to pay the freelancer the money, and then ghost them entirely. Therein lies our confusion and the fact that we’re sitting here whispering “the audacity” to ourselves over and over, while rocking in nonexistent rocking chairs in our own corners. It’s like the opposite of dining and dashing, you know? Oh, did we forget to tell you why we’re here today? We had the chance to chat with Marke Johnson of @the.made.shop, so naturally we went on a tangent about ghosting and nonexistent rocking chairs. Are you with us? Marke shared insight and wisdom on all of the things: about partnering and working with family, generalizing versus specializing as a freelancer, the time his team worked on a famous murder mystery annnnnd a really weird ghosting story that’ll have you muttering “oh the irony” under your breath while you search for your own invisible rocking chair corner. Oh yeah, and then he also tells us all about his time working with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and his thoughts about drawing inspiration without copying. We probably should’ve prefaced this summary with that fact, but the truth is that we went on a ghosting and rocking chair tangent, and lacked the wherewithal to bring it all back. ANYWAYS! As we all know, any time family is involved in the business, things get just a little bit interesting. Are you ready to hear it all for yourself? So, today’s a stories episode, right? Like, it’s an episode where we read your stories and cringe and laugh and cry along with you? Well, plot twist - today’s stories episode happens to include a majority of stories from the two of us… oops. Hear us out: it’s been a wild start to the year. We’ve seen some stuff. We’ve heard some stuff. We’ve said even more stuff. SO PARDON OUR NEED TO SHARE WITH YOU IN THE SAME WAY THAT YOU SHARE WITH US. *ugly cries* In today’s episode, if you’re kind enough to listen, you’ll hear us discuss our own copyright story and drama (yes, someone else copied us yet AGAIN), beating the bush (thanks Arabela), and “money-oriented conversations.” If you had to guess on a scale of 1 (murmuring) to 5 (screeching), how loud do you think we get? Just wondering 💅👀 As the cherry on top, we’re also reading some of your recent story submissions that had enough juicy drama and detail to make us gasp and laugh, all at the same time. That's Where The Story Should Have Ended ft. Little Drill

The name of today’s drink is Growing Pains. Remember that, because it’ll make sense later. Emphasis: pain. When you combine snow shoveling, driving without a GPS, tax fraud and the FBI, it only makes sense to assume that it’s just another Per Our Last Email episode, right? But this time, we’re chatting with the incredible duo of Little Drill, aka Shelby Edwards and James Whitney.  *Screeching record* Listen people, they know things. They know way more things than we do, and they also know what it feels like to be FBI informants. Now, if you have the audacity to ask if this has anything to do with freelancing, we’re here to disrespectfully and emphatically scream that it has EVERYTHING TO DO WITH FREELANCING. Because it does. Because everything does, right? And also, we because we said so. (That worked for our moms, so it should work for us here) If you want to hear us chat with Little Drill about their entrepreneurial journey, and also listen to a story that sounds like it should be the plot of the next National Treasure movie, you’ve come to the right place. I Never Heard From Them Again ft. Helen Koker

What happens when you pair the two of us with cocktails and an Australian guest, you ask? Well, there’s the required questions about 🐨, and the comments on the guest’s gorgeous accent. And then the general fangirling. Now when you add all of that on TOP of our guest being Helen Koker, we basically lose our minds. Rightfully so. Helen graced us with her presence to not only talk about offering passive income streams, being a multi-disciplinary creative, fighting scope creep AND handling reimbursements, but she blessed us with one of the lengthiest and most dramatic stories we’ve heard yet. *cue Chris Harrison* For the sake of your enjoyment of the episode, we won’t give too much away. But if you want to hear Helen singlehandedly triumph over a nasty client AND THEIR LEGAL TEAM, you should probably just listen in. 👏 Send your GIFs, memes, stories, thoughts and fantastical tales to perourlastemail.com! That's Just Business Sometimes

Listen, we’re stressed. We’re stressed because of our stress, and because of your stress. We’re stressed that our stress will turn into your stress and your stress will manifest into client stress, and it’s stressception. But that’s okay. Because as Elle aptly put it: that’s just running a business. Fittingly, today’s Stories Episode features a drink called the Power Suit. So put on your power suit, and then grab your Power Suit. And if your power suit happens to be a matching lounge set, all the better. TBH, you’re going to need your niftiest and spiffiest outfit for this one, because again, these stories have us stressed. We’ve got a client shouting “NEEXT!” (okay, maybe not shouting but it’s so offensive, they might as well have), someone firing a client in two sentences (impressive), and someone else chasing a payment for an entire year. Yes, a year. 365 days. Are you seeing why we’re sweating through our HRC-esque pantsuits? We said what we said. And Then She Pulls Out A Gun ft. Christina Russo of Fresh Print Media

Quick little riddle for ya: what includes hatchets, GUNS(!!!), corsets & suitcases AND has the audacity to underpay? If you answered, “a photoshoot with Christina from Fresh Print Media?” you are (miraculously and suspiciously) correct. So yeah, Christina shared a story with us that any normal person would shout whaaAAAT??? at. Because she officially worked with one of the oddest clients of all time. Anywho, as if her story wasn’t enough, Christina ALSO happens to be a wizard with cocktails, and created the drink we’re having today: OOO (Out of Office) Which is something we wish we were. To be completely honest, we probably didn’t even need to write this entire summary. We probably could’ve said, “Christina’s client brought a gun,” and you would’ve listened immediately. But in the words of Creed, “If I can’t scuba, what’s this all been about?” Alright, the train, which was never on rails, has officially derailed. Okay, so two things: 1. Take this as your reminder to charge more, and use a contract.2. Through this episode, we’ve coined our The Audacity, 2.0: “You know what? LET ME TELL YOU” and it should probably be a shirt. Actually, everything you send us and everything we scream should probably be a shirt. And a cute little trendy mug. Maybe even a pin? Tell us if you agree. If you can’t tell from our squirrel brains, it’s a stories episode. Which contributes to A) our slogan screaming and B) our stress. But hey, that’s showbiz baby. And He Hangs Up The Phone ft. Alexis Jesup of Colors Collective

Imagine a world where your client’s OWN photography is so horrendous, they forget they even took it themselves and instead blamed you for it? Imagine that. IMAGINE THAT. Why aren’t any of us even flinching at this point? Likely because we collectively have TCSA (traumatic client stress ambivalence), tbh. That’s right, we just made up a new term. Coin it, and send us the royalties. We had the absolute pleasure of commiserating with Alexis Jesup from Colors Collective, and let’s just say she didn’t disappoint. Gaslighting Inception ft. Nicole Swartz of Sprout Law

*Gray rocking *Gaslighting *“I think they’re a criminal”ing There’s a lot of “ings” happening in today’s episode with Nicole from Sprout Law, we can tell you that much. Without spilling too much of the burning hot lava that we like to politely call tea, we’ll give you just a taste: Nicole jumped on with us to share her worst client stories, and also tell us how she got started in the freelancing world after leaving her career as an attorney. The Type Of Ex

How do we put this without offending someone? It was today when we realized that some clients are immutably... difficult. Cemented in their difficulty, really. And we’re choosing to use the word “difficult” in order to abstain from offending anyone else through our more powerful choice of descriptors. So yeah, clients? They’re difficult. And we (and you) are NOT alone in that. We’ll put it like this: if you’ve ever read an email and rolled your eyes and fallen so far back in your chair that you flipped over backwards, this episode is probably for you. If you’ve ever wanted to fling yourself from a metaphorical freelancing cliff, this episode is very likely for you. And if you’ve ever had to justify HOW GOOD YOUR WORK IS because your client thinks it’s “too high quality looking,” this episode is definitely for you. Sigh. PLZZ help. And we’re SO excited to have her on the show today! Now don’t worry, we don’t spend *too* long fangirling over Andrea - we got a ton of super thoughtful, educational and helpful conversation in, too. Do You Think That's Wise?

There’s a lot happening in today’s episode. A lot. First and foremost, Anna left us unattended with alcohol, and we’re a mess. Lots of things happened, and we chose to leave them in. We’re talking about freelancing fairies, “grooroos” (as Elle said), barking dogs, flying phones, face planting, demanding respect from employers and clients and the woes of event photography. Oh, and then we’re going to discuss how annoying and unacceptable it is when clients and employers question our authority. All good things, all good things. If you want to hear us giggle, gaggle and gossip (only a little), you should probably mix up a drink and listen in. And of course, if you’ve got a crazy freelancing story to share, submit it at perourlastemail.com. We promise to read it as dramatically as possible. 💁 Follow us on Instagram: @perourlastemail @weekendcreative @annamcnaughty

I'm Sorry I'm Cranky Today

Had we known we could excuse ourselves from responsibilities, irritating clients and bills to pay with, “I’m sorry, I’m cranky today,” we’d be different women. In fact, let’s try it. Hey, electric bill? We’re cranky today. In case you didn’t catch it, we have a juicy little story to share from none other than our beloved Anna McNaught (or as some of you might call her in the DMs - Amanda McNaughty). Oh, and then you’ll get to hear us read off an internal email conversation from our Weekend Creative team inbox, because, well, we’re cranky today. Look, this episode is such a struggle that we had to drink a CELERY AND DESIST. Do we love celery? No. It tastes like the inside of a blade of grass. Did we choke it down, because of the title of the drink? Why yes, yes we did. Mix up your celery cocktail (and pretend you’re juicing), because you’re going to need it. Then, come listen and laugh along with us. Got a crazy freelancing story to share? Submit it at perourlastemail.com. Follow us on Instagram: @perourlastemail @weekendcreative @annamcnaughty

I Had All The Screenshots ft. Billy Green of Wit & Vinegar

In today’s episode, we spent some time with Billy Green of Wit & Vinegar… and let’s just say the tea (or vinegar?) that he had to share? It burned. Not only will you get a chance to learn about Billy’s long-standing wordsmithery, but he also shares some insight to his entrepreneurial journey. Then, we covered a few things like introing colors, clients who approve, then disapprove their own approvals (can anyone hear our screams for help?), keeping creative control as the photographer, OH and clients who sneakily use photos they say they won’t. Oops. Mix up a cocktail, because you’re going to need it. Then, come listen and laugh along with us. Got a crazy freelancing story to share? Submit it at perourlastemail.com. I'm Logging Off

We’ve got another episode packed to the rim (get it? Because drinks) with stories you’re going to want to hear. That’s right - the stories you sent in like… months ago? Yeah, we’re finally getting around to them. In this episode, you’ll hear about a snarky email, and an 80 year old wannabe influencer. You’ll also hear us rant about how the cheapest clients are the most difficult ones (ALWAYS AND WITHOUT ARGUMENT), and then you’ll hear us read the hate letter we’ve alllll wanted to send. Mix up a cocktail, because you’re going to need it. Then, come listen and laugh along with us. Got a crazy freelancing story to share? Submit it at perourlastemail.com.
