The NIH has done a research survey of Certified Nurse Coaches (from all 5 Nurse Coach CE programs) stating that Nurse Practitioners may be ideally suited for the role.

Many people still believe that culture ended with the Civil War. Nothing could be further from the truth. Benjamin McHie Marie Manthey, join me to reveal the journey of one young woman, Francis McHie in 1929, who bravely fought the status quo of blatant discrimination toward black citizens in Minnesota in 1929, by applying to the School of Nursing at the U of MN. She broke the color barrier in nursing, not only Minnesota, but every state she stepped foot into over the course of her lifetime. Her nephew, Mr McHie, will share her story with us. Ms Manthey, pioneer of Primary Nursing will share a historical look at discrimination in U of MN. We will introduce a new U of MN Nursing Scholarship in honor of Francis for individuals of color. I couldn't even rest. One day I bought a 5 spot CD player and music that I thought might be soothing. It was. It allowed me to lay down and be absorbed into the gentle rhythms and beats of the heart. My guest discovered the music research of Niels Eje during a similar period in her life of discord around the mental health issues in her family. The music was called MusiCure. Doulas (with or without the name) have been around as long as women have needed help delivering babies--which is to say, forever! Many people are aware that while Doulas (the name means, Mothering mother), have never really gone away, they have returned in force. This volatile brew has been stewing for decades if not since the beginning of humans. it has occasionally in history broken through the surface angrily and rolled out like a wave of lava. Some progress seems to occur, then there is a settling and hardening and the process begins all over again. I first experienced the lava flow in the 60's and 70's then the 90's and now in the present. This gender inequality has always been very apparent in nursing, despite the fact that nurses are about 90% women. The lava flow now has to do with the debacle occurring in the international eye on the American Senate Judicial Committee stage during the nomination process of Judge Brett Kavanaugh. I am not interested in the specifics of the case as much as the reactions of the genders of observers. Join me.

There are records of the first nursing school in 250 B.C. in India, which admitted only men. We know that they functioned in Europe during plagues and certainly in most wars. It has really only been in the 19th-20th centuries when women became the predominant or ONLY people accepted to nursing schools in the USA. Until the about the 70's. Since then the % of men in nursing has tripled from 2.7% to 9.6%. This show is a conversation with 3 extraordinary men who all started as RN's working in hospitals and then developed their careers to a great degree. This, ironically, leads to understanding and appreciating others. This can lead to some personal wisdom about how to interact with others in a positive and respectful way. More important, how to stop the negative flow of the interaction and move it toward a positive outcome.

I am an educator, who loves to support nurses in finding their own greatness. Currently I am teaching an RN Refresher Course through a Community College in Minnesota. My students have been encouraging me to get this material out to a wider audience. I want to peruse the world of nursing with other nurses world-wide. This is the first step in that journey. I could think of no one better for the job of helping me launch this program than having a conversation with my treasured friend, mentor and role model, Betsy Stites. Betsy and I will discuss the journey we have had as a way of introducing me to this new audience. We met when she was the Obstetric Nursing instructor for the unit where I worked. Over the years, we created a safe and respectful closure of 2 hospitals in St. Paul, MN. She later was my director in an Organizational Development Department. We remained friends even after she Refired in her new adventure as founder of Consult Imago, a life coaching practice.
