Owen Hargreaves: Swing For The Fences

On this episode, we have a guest who really has done it all. Owen Hargreaves has won the Champions League with two different clubs and scored in one of the tense penalty shootouts. He also won both the Bundesliga and the Premier League. Eligible to play for Canada, Wales, and Germany, he opted to represent the country of his Father, overcoming some negative press to become England's player of the tournament at the 2006 World Cup. Not a bad career for a guy who used to work at a McDonald's in Canada, and who could have done even more if it wasn't for injury. And while he spent most of his time in English Football on the wrong side of Manchester, he came to City for his final season as a professional in what turned out to be a pivotal time for the club. Join Nedum and Rob as they discuss his breakthrough at Bayern Munich, the extraordinary reception he was given by some journalists when named in the world cup squad, who he thinks was the greatest player during his time at the Etihad, and how he kept himself motivated after winning so much in his first season as a professional. Cancelo dazzles as our lead is extended | City 2-0 Brentford

It’s now two wins from two for City since returning from the mid-season break – the latest a 2-0 win over Brentford at the Etihad thanks to goals from Riyad Mahrez and Kevin De Bruyne. The win means City are now 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, but second-placed Liverpool do have two games in hand, the first of which sees them host Leicester on Thursday. Joao Cancelo was once again in inspired form. He signed a new deal with City last week and this performance underlined why that was such a good move by the club – he was exceptional. After the game we heard from Pep Guardiola and Raheem Sterling – and joining us in the Matchday Live studio were Trevor Sinclair and Darius Vassell.   Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Brian Marwood | The Official Man City Podcast

Brian Horton | The Official Man City Podcast

In this episode of the Man City podcast, Rob is in conversation with Brian Horton, City manager between 1993-95. With Peter Reid sacked after just four games of the 1993-94 season, chairman Peter Swales approached Oxford and asked for permission to speak to Brian. He was installed as manager days later, becoming the last managerial appointment of the Swales era. But it was a turbulent period in the Club’s history, with City in a state of civil war as the Swales Out campaign gathered momentum. City’s chairman of 20 years was ousted in February 1994, just six months after Horton came in, replaced by former player Francis Lee. Horton kept City in his first season, with the arrivals of Paul Walsh, Uwe Rosler and Peter Beagrie vital, and the following campaign started superbly, with City managing big wins over Everton, West Ham and, most famously, a brilliant Spurs side, playing a vibrant, attacking brand of football. But that early promise subsided, giving way for a poor second half of the season, and Horton was sacked by Lee as the campaign came to an end. Here, Rob and Brian discuss his time at City, his pursuit of Luis Figo and the bitter nature of his sacking in the summer of 1995. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Dennis Tueart | The Official Man City Podcast

Rob sits down with Dennis Tueart this week at the City Football Academy to discuss his rich and varied career. Tueart has had three stints at City – two as a player and one as a director – giving him a unique perspective of the Club. He joined from Sunderland in 1974 and went on to win the 1976 League Cup, scoring in the final with a brilliant overhead kick that has gone down as one of the all-time great City goals. He left City in 1978 and joined the New York Cosmos, replacing Pele in a star-studded lineup, before returning to City in 1979. During his time as a director, City enjoyed back-to-back promotions under Joe Royle and after a year spent back in the old First Division, established themselves in the Premier League under the guidance of Kevin Keegan. Tueart, as ever, is frank and open as he discusses his life and times. Rob sits down with Paul and Joanne Lake to discuss Paul’s career in the game, his injuries and the treatment he received from the Club’s staff during his lowest moments. The pair talk openly about Paul’s struggles with mental health, as well as the process of writing the bestselling book, “I’m Not Really Here,” which neither expected to be so successful. Paul’s story is unique. He was the captain of City in 1990 and there was talk of him leading England, too. Unfortunately, City’s underinvestment in his rehabilitation process meant he had to retire aged just 27, his potential left totally unfulfilled. Now, for the first time, both Paul and Jo discuss his ‘Life of Two Halves’ in gripping detail. Francis Lee | The Official Man City Podcast

In this episode, Rob sits down with one of City’s greatest-ever players: Francis Lee. Lee signed for City in 1967, described by Joe Mercer at the time as “the final piece of the jigsaw”. By the end of his first season, City were crowned champions, with Lee scoring 17 league goals. He left in 1974 having added an FA Cup, a League Cup and a European Cup Winners’ Cup to his list of City successes. In total, he scored 148 goals in 330 matches. He retuned to City in 1994, taking over from the much-maligned Peter Swales as chairman of the club. It was turbulent period, though, and having assumed control with City in the Premier League, he left with relegation to third tier almost certain. Here, at his home in Portugal, he opens up about the effect that time had on him and his family in his first in-depth interview since his time as chairman.
