Originally from Toronto, he earned a J.D. from Harvard University in 2001. After working as a law clerk for a federal judge and as an associate at a law firm, he joined the faculty of Florida State University in 2005. Markel was killed in Tallahassee, Florida, in 2014, in a murder-for-hire motivated by child custody issues following Markel's divorce from Wendi Adelson, a clinical law professor and child advocate also employed at Florida State University at the time. Wendi Adelson has not been charged, but she has been named, together with her brother Charlie and mother Donna, as "conspirators" in the killing. Four individuals have been convicted in the case. Luis Rivera pled guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 19 years in prison. Sigfredo Garcia was found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to life in prison. After a mistrial was declared in her original trial, Katherine Magbanua was found guilty of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation of murder in her retrial; she was sentenced to life in prison plus two consecutive 30-year sentences. Charlie Adelson, Wendi Adelson's brother, was convicted of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation of murder. On Tuesday, December 12, 2023, Charlie Adelson was sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder plus an additional 30 years each for conspiracy and solicitation convictions. Donna Adelson, Markel's former mother-in-law, was arrested at the Miami International Airport on a warrant from Leon County, apparently trying to flee to Vietnam, a country with no extradition treaty with the U.S. She is charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation of murder. President Biden ordered a full review of security for former President Trump’s Pennsylvania rally and to assess the security in place for the Republican National Convention this week in Milwaukee. On Sunday afternoon, Trump said he would head to Wisconsin for the RNC as planned. He’d thanked the nation on Sunday morning for its concern in the wake of an attempt on his life the evening before. Throughout the morning, Republicans and Democrats alike called for lowering the temperature of political rhetoric. Amid those calls, there were questions about how this happened and descriptions of the rally as a “security failure.” One person at the rally was also killed, and two others were critically injured, officials said. Overnight, the FBI named the suspect in the shooting at a rally in Butler, Pa., but offered no other details. Authorities said Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pa., was involved. Today, I am joined by James E. Craig, the 42nd Chief of Police for the City of Detroit. About my guest: James E. Craig has dedicated his life to service, spending more than four decades in law enforcement, leaving the cities he served safer than he found them. In 2013, Craig was asked by Governor Rick Snyder to serve as the 42nd Chief of Police for the City of Detroit, his hometown. Over the next eight years, Craig led a department of 2800 sworn and civilian personnel and achieved great success, propelling the DPD into the 21st century. Accomplishments as the Chief of Police in Detroit include a significant reduction in violent crime rates through the utilization of data and analysis to support proactive policing, quicker response times for priority 911 calls, and the institution of programs to cut gang membership in at-risk communities. Craig received widespread acclaim for his leadership during the unrest in the summer of 2020. While other cities were marred by looting, riots, and destruction, Detroit stood firm, a model for other cities to strive for. MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- There is an unexpected twist in the death of a South Carolina pastor's wife after the sheriff announced the FBI and U.S. attorney are helping in the Mica Miller investigation. The 30-year-old woman was found dead in April. However, investigators say she called 911 moments before she was found dead at a state park in North Carolina, which was about an hour north of where she lived in Myrtle Beach. Mica's death came just days after she told a police officer "she was scared for her life" after finding a GPS tracker on her car and a razor blade in her tire. She and her husband, John Paul Miller, were also in the process of separating. He was a pastor at a local church but has since been released from his duties. About my guest: Sarah A. Ford is a Victim Rights Attorney from South Carolina, where she was born and raised. She is a former public defender (2 years) and prosecutor (8 years), where she focused on crimes against women and children. I break down key elements of the letter that I feel either expose narcissistic traits that we might also find in others or that stem into other areas of malignant narcissism or emotional manipulation. *Please note I am not a mental health professional nor am I attempting to diagnose someone, I am only pointing out things that I have learned throughout my years fo dealing with this type of emotional manipulation firsthand. It should be noted that people who suffer from narcissistic personality disorder rarely seek treatment. This is due to their perception of their self-image as they see themselves as special, unique, and above standard. Their fragile ego is unable to accept any flaws or imperfections and thus inflates their own self-image to improve their own self-esteem. Moreover, they project their imperfections on others and blame others for everything that goes wrong. Grossman has been awaiting sentencing since her Feb. 23 conviction of second-degree murder in the deaths of two brothers who were struck and killed in a crosswalk as she sped along a residential Westlake Village street in September 2020. James Crumbley Declines to Testify in His Involuntary Manslaughter Trial, unlike his wife, Jennifer Crumbley, who was convicted last month. Witness testimony in the trial ended on Wednesday. Mr. Crumbley faces involuntary manslaughter charges for the four students killed by his son, Ethan Crumbley. Testimony concluded Wednesday morning in the trial of James Crumbley, whose son carried out Michigan’s deadliest school shooting more than two years ago and whose wife was convicted last month in the same courtroom for failing to prevent the rampage. Prosecutors took the rare step of seeking to hold the Crumbleys partially responsible for the shooting at Oxford High School on Nov. 30, 2021, in which their son, Ethan, who was 15 at the time, killed four people and injured seven others. “That nightmare was preventable, and it was foreseeable,” Marc Keast, an Oakland County prosecutor, said in an opening statement last week. He accused Mr. Crumbley of failing to secure the gun that his son used in the shooting. Mr. Crumbley has been jailed since December 2021, when he and his wife, Jennifer Crumbley, were each charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter. They requested separate trials, and unlike his wife, Mr. Crumbley chose not to testify in his own defense. Michelle Troconis was found guilty Friday March 1st of conspiring with Fotis Dulos to kill his wife, Connecticut mother Jennifer Farber Dulos, along with five other counts in connection to her disappearance and presumed death. Troconis, 49, was Dulos’ girlfriend when his wife disappeared in May 2019. Dulos was eventually charged with murder in the case but died while out on bail. On Friday, after two days of deliberations, a six-person jury found Troconis guilty of conspiracy to commit murder, two counts of conspiracy to commit tampering with physical evidence, two counts of tampering with physical evidence and one count of hindering prosecution in the second degree following a multiweek trial in Stamford Superior Court. On October 21, 2021, at the Bonanza Creek Ranch in Bonanza City, New Mexico, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot and director Joel Souza was injured on the set of the film Rust when a live round was discharged from a revolver used as a prop by actor Alec Baldwin. Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed's criminal trial is finally underway, more than two years after the fatal on-set shooting of the movie's cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins. She faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence that Santa Fe County District Attorney's office first filed against her in January 2023. Gutierrez-Reed entered a written plea of not guilty on Aug. 9, 2023. "Ms. Gutierrez has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is preparing for her day in court," her attorney Bowles said in a statement to PEOPLE at that time. "She looks forward to her day in court and to having the conduct of everyone on set fully examined." Convicted killer Alex Murdaugh was back in court on Tuesday, January 16th, appearing in front of a new judge as he argues his case for a new trial. Retired South Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean Toal will preside over Tuesday’s status conference at the Richland County Courthouse. Tuesday’s status hearing could determine who will take the stand later this month when Toal hears arguments that Murdaugh deserves a new trial. Murdaugh was convicted for the June 2021 murders of his wife, Maggie, and their son, Paul, at the family’s hunting property in rural Colleton County. Murdaugh’s defense team filed a motion for a new trial alleging jury tampering on the part of Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca Hill. Murdaugh’s defense team filed a brief on Jan. 12 listing potential witnesses they could call. Those names included several jurors, state prosecutor Creighton Waters and Judge Clifton Newman. “The state must call Ms. Hill to deny the allegations that she tampered with the jury,” the brief states, adding that depending on her testimony, Murdaugh’s team might call additional witnesses as rebuttal witnesses.Hill’s son, Jeffrey Hill, the former IT director for the Colleton County Courthouse was also listed as a potential witness. He was a Senior Deputy District Attorney in Orange County, California. Matt Murphy spent 21 years assigned to the sexual assault and homicide units, where he prosecuted some of the most notorious murder cases in the state of California. He completed 132 jury trials in his career as a prosecutor, including 52 while he was assigned to the homicide unit. He worked as an adjunct professor of law for seven years. The shooting came at a period of heightened public support for gun control that followed mass shootings in Paradise, Nevada, and in Sutherland Springs, Texas, in October and November 2017. Students at Parkland founded Never Again MSD, an advocacy group that lobbies for gun control. In a new video shared on his social media on Friday, Brand, 48, said he “absolutely refutes” the claims and described them as "extremely egregious and aggressive attacks." “I’ve received two extremely disturbing letters, or a letter and an email, one from a mainstream media TV company, one from a newspaper, listing a litany of extremely egregious and aggressive attacks,” he began in the video. “But amidst this litany of astonishing, rather baroque attacks, are some very serious allegations that I absolutely refute.” Although Brand did not name the TV company or newspaper, his video comes ahead of a new special investigation episode of the U.K. current affairs show Dispatches airing Saturday night. Letecia Stauch, a stepmother from Colorado, was found guilty on May 8th, 2023, of murdering her 11-year-old stepson, Gannon Stauch, in January 2020. She was convicted of first-degree murder, murder of a child under 12, tampering with a deceased human body, and tampering with physical evidence. Prosecutors alleged that Stauch killed Gannon because she was resentful about being used as a babysitter, as evidenced by her search history. She stabbed Gannon 18 times, beat him across the head four times, and shot him in the jaw, according to prosecutors, before dumping his body under a bridge in Florida. Stauch, who worked as a special needs elementary school teacher, had claimed that her behavior was the result of mental illness or childhood sexual abuse. Prosecutors argued that she acted with intent and was mentally competent when she killed Gannon. The jury agreed with the prosecutors and found Stauch guilty on all charges. The sentencing for Nikki Sue Entzel has been pushed until March 6, 2023, when she will finally face justice for her crimes. The case serves as a reminder of the destructive power of betrayal and the importance of seeking justice for victims of crime. * The Murdaugh Trial: The State's Case rests On day 20 of the trial, the state presented a comprehensive timeline that revealed inconsistencies in Murdaugh's statements to authorities. The state also revealed a possible new motive for the murder: in May 2021, Maggie was concerned about drug use and researching pills online after finding several bags of pills in Murdaugh's computer bag. • Intergenerational Trauma and the Legacy of The Murdaugh Family PMPED, the law firm founded by Randolph Murdaugh Sr. in 1910, has been a fixture in Hampton as a one-person law firm for over a century. However, the legacy of the firm is shrouded in controversy and scandal. Recent findings suggest that Randolph Murdaugh Sr. may have committed suicide in a train accident, rather than the accident being purely accidental. This revelation sheds light on the possible origins of the intergenerational trauma that has plagued the Murdaugh family for generations.
