In Daniel’s time, just like in today’s time, the government was corrupt and tried to punish him for serving Jesus. But, Daniel stood firm and worshiped the true King and, in his infinite might and power, God showed up once again in Daniel’s life to rescue him from a den of lions.

In Daniel 5, the same family continues to do the same evil and God shows up in a powerful way while Daniel once again interprets a prophecy that God will ultimately get the last word.

In Daniel 4, Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that foreshadowed his seven-year period of being humbled by the true King, Jesus. Despite the warning, he continued his prideful reign until the dream came true and he was forced to acknowledge the God over all kingdoms.

When faced with a decision whether to worship the true God or a counterfeit God, Daniel’s friends stood firm in worship of the true God. Even when it looked like the counterfeit God would win, the real God showed up in the middle of their trial and protected them. God can do the same for those today who put their trust and faith in Him despite the most desperate of circumstances.

To celebrate all of this, the Jewish people celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles. The Temple would be lit up with large candelabras that could be seen from miles around. During this holiday, Jesus stood up and declared Himself to be the light of the world for, “Whoever follows me…” Do you follow Jesus? Are you walking in the light? Are you headed to eternal light or darkness?

Not only is Jesus the most significant person in world history, His family is also the most significant family in world history. Although they had no money, power, or fame they did have the Holy Spirit. Jesus’ aunt, uncle, cousin, parents, and siblings were all filled with the Holy Spirit and fulfilled God’s calling on their life. From the example of Jesus’ family, we learn what it takes to truly have a great family by the Spirit’s power.

The story of the woman caught in adultery is one of the best most and hotly debated sections in all of Scripture. For starters, it is possibly that the story was not originally even part of the Bible. In this weeks sermon, Pastor Mark has his work cut out trying to first explain how we got the Bible and why we can trust it. A man had been an invalid for thirty-eight years until Jesus healed him. Upset that Jesus healed on the Sabbath and commanded the man to carry his mat, the religious leaders began what became a few years of persecution that culminated at the cross. In the Bible, it is common to require two or three witnesses to establish a fact (e.g. Deut. 19:15). In defending Himself, Jesus brought forth no less than five witnesses that we examine in detail that proved that Jesus is God! - Jesus healed a man crippled for 38 years - Religious upset Jesus A). healed on the Sabbath B). pick up his mat & walk - The man sent the religious leaders to Jesus & they began “persecuting” - Religious spirit – judgmental, unteachable, domineering, non-relational, critic not a coach - 2-3 witnesses (Dt 19:15)

Have you ever felt wrecked, broken, and stuck? One man who had been crippled for thirty-eight years felt the same way. Jesus healed him, and then tells us that one day He will heal all who believe in Him! You too need the hope, help, and healing that only Jesus can give.

With a little boy on his deathbed, his daddy hears that Jesus is traveling nearby and jumps on a horse riding as fast as he can, hoping for a miracle. Frantic, the father begs Jesus to heal his son. Jesus promises that the boy will be healed, and in faith the father heads home to see his boy healed. This is Jesus’ first healing miracle in John’s gospel and in this sermon Pastor Mark answers the most common questions about healing.

In one of the most moving and loving scenes in the whole Bible, Jesus sits down with a rejected and dejected woman. In one conversation, her life changes from miserable to wonderful and God wants to sit down and do the same for you!

Jesus showed up at the Temple, got angry, made a whip, and started sending money flying and people running? Why? Because the religious leaders did not care about worship, Jesus, or relationships. This week Jesus the Lamb turns into Jesus the Lion for some good reasons we will study together.

The truth is that Jesus’ miracles revealed His eternal Kingdom. How do you discover God’s will for your life? Jesus first disciples had jobs they worked and a life course they had plotted. All of that changed, however, when Jesus came along and asked them to follow Him. The same is true for Jesus’ followers today. By understanding who Jesus is and what life in relationship with Him looks like, you too can begin to uncover God’s will for your life and walk with Jesus.

How do we really come to understand ourselves? That question, perhaps more than any other, dominates our thinking as we use personality tests and other tools to discover the mystery that is me. There is a man named John the Baptizer whom Jesus called the greatest man who has ever lived. People tried to figure out who John was, and he said that the only way to really understand oneself is to first understand Jesus. In that day, like ours, many people were making the mistake of looking at themselves too much and looking at Jesus too little. If you want to understand who you are, the first thing you need to understand is who Jesus is.

Who knows you best? When Jesus walked the earth, he had a best friend named John. John was an eyewitness to Jesus entire ministry, and no one knew Jesus better than John. Long after Jesus had returned to heaven, the other disciples had all died, and the last eyewitnesses to Jesus’ were reaching the end of their life, John sat down to write about his best friend and Lord, Jesus Christ. At breakneck speed that strains human understanding, John starts by telling us that Jesus is our Eternal God, Creator God, Polarizing God, Savior God, Human God, Only God, and Relational God. Why? Because if you want to understand who God is you have to start with Jesus!

After years of praying, weeping, and waiting, the elderly and barren Elizabeth rejoices at the birth of her son, John. His name means God is gracious and was chosen by the angel Gabriel. In response, John’s father Zechariah ends his nine months of muteness by blessing God in worship. The entire scene is one of great joy and life as the Holy Spirit fills Zechariah to prophecy over the life of his son who was chosen to prepare the way for the coming of Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God. A bit further into Luke’s gospel, and we hear Jesus saying that John was the greatest person (besides Himself) who has lived in the history of the world. His brief six months of public ministry literally changed the world because God’s power was at work in and through him.

As a single, pregnant, poor teenager from a small rural town who is betrothed to be married but a hundred miles away from home without any indication that her parents are involved in her life, Mary has a lot she could be worried about. But, rather than worrying, she spends her time worshipping. In so doing, she reminds herself who God is and why she can trust him for the future of herself and her unborn baby, Jesus. In so doing, she serves as an example for everyone in stressful, fearful, and anxious situations how to replace worrying with worshipping.

This week, we see Mary and Elizabeth meet for the first time as pregnant women. Mary is young, unmarried, and carrying Jesus in her womb. Her relative, Elizabeth, is old, married, and carrying John the Baptizer in her womb. Mary makes the roughly 100-mile journey to see Elizabeth, and upon meeting amazing things happen. John is filled with Spirit, as is his mother, and they worship the unborn Jesus. Furthermore, we see that Dr. Luke the author, guided by the Holy Spirit, clearly speaks of life beginning in the womb and God saving and calling people even from their mother’s womb.

This week, we meet a young, poor, and rural engaged couple that were chosen by God to be the parents of Jesus Christ. We see a pattern in their life of receiving a word from God, bringing Jesus home, and accepting God’s will for our life especially when it varies from our dream for our life.

This week, as the historical details surrounding the entrance of God into human history as Jesus Christ unfolds, we are introduced to some rich personalities. Herod is the definition of pride and power. Elizabeth and Zechariah are the picture of humility and integrity. And, God works through natural means (the dice roll in Zechariah’s favor) and supernatural means (sending the angel Gabriel) to accomplish his will. All of this is to set the stage for the coming of John the Baptizer who leads the parade preparing the people for the coming of his cousin Jesus.

This week we begin our two-month holiday sermon series, The Boy Who is Lord. Together, we will explore the first two chapters of Luke. This week Pastor Mark introduces us to the Luke and the incredible historical research he undertook to uncover the truth about Jesus Christ.

After you have cried to God, freaked out a bit, and begged God what do you do when the future you were fearing becomes the life you are living? That is precisely the pain of Habakkuk. In the final chapter of his tear soaked book, we discover 3 things that God uses to move us from routine to real relationship – prayer, Bible study, and worship. In this very practical sermon, we will examine how to really pray, really study, and really worship by getting out of our routine relationship with God and entering into a real relationship with God. Some of us don’t do these 3 things, and others of us need to learn to do them in a fresh way to grow our faith.

If God is all powerful, all knowing, and all good why is there suffering and evil? This is one of the most practical, painful, and problematic questions that every generation asks about God. And, this is the same question that Habakkuk brought to God for an answer. If this were a multiple choice test, here are the possible answers: There is no God – Atheism God is not all powerful – Finite Godism God is not all knowing – Evolutionary Godism, Open Theism God is not all good – Pantheism, Panentheism There is no suffering and evil – subjectivism, pluralism God is not done yet so live by faith, not sight – Christianity Which does Habakkuk choose? Which will you choose?

What if God jumped in to take a talk radio call and answer a few questions from a ranting, bewildered, and frustrated believer who was fed up with all the moral decline, governmental corruption, and political shenanigans in the world? This, in essence, is exactly what happened to a man named Habakkuk who was frustrated that the bad guys were winning while the “good” guys were weeping. The honest to God book he penned recounts God’s answers to his questions about “why” things were so bad and “how long” God would let the world circle the drain before getting involved. In this first sermon in Habakkuk, we examine what it really means to live by faith – especially when you are frustrated with a world that is falling apart.

That Day! At some point, everyone finds themselves with a day, unlike any other day. That day is the day that someone or something that is against you is bigger than you and is in the process of defeating you. On that day, the doctor says that there is nothing more they can do to treat the cancer, the lawyer says that the divorce is final, or the nurse says it’s time to pull the plug because the person you love has seen their earthly life come to an end. When that day comes, you can either get frustrated with God or bring your frustrations to God as an ancient believer did in the tear-stained journal he kept. Through lamenting, we learn to grieve like Jesus and grow to be more like Jesus.

If someone were to summarize your life, character, and ministry, what might they say? In the final section of Paul’s letter to the Colossians, he does this very thing while writing from prison. In this study, we will examine our own lives to see what the Holy Spirit might have to say to us individually. We will also consider the people in our lives who have been a blessing and a help to us, to whom we may even choose to write a letter of gratitude.

Critics of the Bible are prone to find controversial issues in complicated Scriptures and use them to discredit and dismiss God’s Word. This includes the occasional New Testament exhortations to “bondservants” which some translations refer to as “slaves.” Rather than editing God’s Word, apologizing for God’s Word, or dismissing God’s Word we should study God’s Word to find God’s wisdom. In these highly debated and controversial Scriptures, we learn how to be in authority like Jesus our Master, and under authority like Jesus our Servant – particularly on the job at work. Subsequently, we will learn together how to worship at work.

What does God expect of Christian parents and their children? In this incredibly practical sermon, we explore in great detail what it means for children to obey their parents, and parents to lovingly lead their children toward God’s best for them. This sermon will help you consider how you were raised, and help you correct errors in how you may be raising your children. And, it will give hope to imperfect parents as even Jesus was raised by imperfect parents but turned out just fine.

If you have ever seen what happens when someone points a hose at a bees’ nest, then you have witnessed what basically happens when the the Bible verses about wives submitting to their husbands are discussed. In this sermon, Pastor Mark examines in great practical detail what the Bible means and does not mean when instructing wives to submit to husbands, and husbands to love their wives and not be harsh with them. Every day, we take off our pajamas and put on our clothes for the day. Using this analogy, the Bible also tells us that we need to not only prepare ourselves physically but also spiritually each day, by putting on the character of Christ. If you have ever experienced another culture, you remember how the customs, traditions, and mindsets were different than your own. So, you had to learn the new culture and how to live in light of your new context. Becoming a Christian is a bit like this. In meeting Jesus, we become citizens of God’s Kingdom - and we begin to learn how our sexuality, relationships, and underlying identity are to be understood not in light of the culture on earth, but rather in light of the Kingdom of God in heaven.

There are 3 counterfeits to Christianity that Paul not so tenderly blows up: lawmaking legalism, hippie mysticism, and minimalist asceticism. Too often, religious error takes itself too seriously, and God not seriously enough. So, in this sermon there is a bit of comedy intended to offend and edify everyone before pointing them to Jesus Christ as better than our silly pursuits at filling the gap between us and God with morality, spirituality, or suffering.

In the tradition of epic ancient battles as depicted in movies like 300 along with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series, this section of Colossians reveals Jesus as a Warrior King who defeated Satan and Demons in a bloody battle. Through His victory, we have been set free from slavery to an awful king and kingdom of death, darkness, and despair. Furthermore, we have been welcomed by the wonderful King and Kingdom of life, light, and love. By remembering and celebrating the victory of Jesus Christ, we are guarded from being caught up in the latest faddish spiritual trends which, over time, prove to be untrue, unhelpful, and ungodly.

No matter how hard we work to prevent it, avoid it, and deny it, we all suffer. Why do we suffer? How should we see our suffering? How can we use our suffering? As he sits in a jail cell, the Apostle Paul talks about how suffering can teach us about Jesus, make us more like Jesus, and give us a ministry that blesses others. This text of Scripture reveals an incredibly rich countercultural way of making the best of your worst times.

Jesus Christ is the most significant person in the history of the world. Our calendar measures time by His life, and each year our biggest holidays (Christmas and Easter) are devoted to his birth and resurrection. Today, billions of people on the earth worship Him as God and more songs are sung to him and books written about Him than anyone who has ever lived. Jesus once asked, "Who do you say I am?” How you answer that question charts your destiny. In Colossians 1:15-23, perhaps the richest single section in all of human history regarding the deity of Jesus Christ, Pastor Mark unpacks 10 Big Truths About a Big Jesus! Get ready to have your mind blown and your soul fed.

What have been some of the toughest seasons of your entire life? How did you respond? What did your prayer life look like? If you really want to get to know someone (including yourself), listen to their prayers under pressure. Although he is in a jail cell far away and unable to visit the church, he can pray for them and write to them. This selfless act shows the heart of someone who is content even in crisis. Despite hardship, Paul is not jealous or covetous of other Christians who are living an easier life. No, he rejoices with them, prays for them, and encourages them with 3 evidences of real Christianity, 4 encouragements of real Christianity, and 7 exciting gifts that God has for us! This packed prayer is like a bucket of fresh, cold, life-giving water drawn from a deep well poured out to nourish God’s people.

There are four things you gotta know if you wanna grow. Who will you learn from? How can you know God’s will for your life? What is your identity? Do you understand the Father heart of God? In the opening lines of his letter to the Colossian church, the apostle Paul answers these four massive questions that form our identity and frame our destiny. And, by calling God’s people saints, he reveals that when we know who we truly are in Christ we can truly begin to become more like Christ.

There is a powerful lie in our culture about marriage - that Christians and non-Christians have the same rates of marital happiness, adultery, and divorce. This powerful lie keeps non-Christians from coming to church to get help for their family. And, this powerful lie also keeps Christians discouraged and feeling like hypocrites. But, this lie is untrue and the most comprehensive sociological research proves that church attending, Bible reading, prayer uttering Christians have the best marriages of any group of people. Jesus’ first priority after he physically rose from death was to teach people the Scriptures that are all about him. Just like the men walking to Emmaus whom Jesus joined, we are all spiritually blind until God opens our eyes; the teaching of the Word of God opens blind eyes. We see six ways in which all of the Old Testament is connected to Jesus: events, titles, prophecies, Christophanies, types, and like service. The book that God wrote is all about Jesus.

Pastor Mark preaches at the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem, the site that could be where Jesus was buried, temporarily. No one knows exactly where Jesus was buried—because he’s not there. Nobody is in Jesus’ tomb. He is alive, and this fact is the bedrock of the Christian faith. Without the resurrection of Jesus, Christianity does not exist. If Jesus is dead, we are dead; if Jesus is alive, we are alive (1 Cor. 15:17).

The Gospel of Luke culminates in the most important death of the most important person in the history of the world. Nothing is as important as one thing: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures. Jesus was brutally murdered by us, but it was also for us. He died to forgive, love, serve, seek, save, and adopt us. On the cross he became our substitute, our sin was imputed to him, and he became cursed, which was more difficult to bear than even his physical suffering. Like those who were present on that day, you can respond in passive unbelief, active unbelief, or belief. Trust in Jesus.

Jesus is in absolute agony, sweating blood, as he prays honestly with the Father. What is the cup he is so grieved about? It is the cup of the wrath of God. Every sin is like a drop into a cup. We pour the sin in. God, at the end of this life, pours out commensurate wrath. Yet Jesus submits his will to the Father’s; he exchanges places with us on the cross and drinks every single drop of the wrath of God. The cross is where the love of God is most clearly seen: wrath was poured out on Jesus, and love was poured out for us.

Jesus’ disciples argue over who is the greatest, but Jesus doesn’t rebuke their desire, he redirects it. He redeems the pursuit of greatness, showing the difference between worldly and godly greatness. True, godly greatness is simply service. Are you selfish or a servant? When we live a life that glorifies God and serves others, we receive joy in this life and eternal rewards in the life to come.

In this intense parable of the wicked tenants, Jesus gives us a look at what it’s like for God to deal with us. God made this world. It’s his vineyard, and he has allowed us to steward and cultivate it and be fruitful as tenants. Yet, when it comes time to collect our dues to him, we beat his messengers and then, wanting the inheritance for ourselves, murder the beloved son he sent.

The Bible is not a book that gives good advice or tells you how to live your life. The Bible is the Word of God, and the whole Bible is about Jesus. This includes the Old Testament, which makes up three-quarters of the whole Bible. In particular, we find Jesus in the Old Testament Christophanies, types, analogous service, events, titles, and prophecies.

Jesus tells a parable about heaven and hell. What does Jesus and the Bible say about what happens to every person upon death? Not naturalism, universalism, reincarnationism, annihilationism, or purgatory. The fate of every man and woman who has or will ever live is this: death, and then either heaven for blessing, or hell for suffering. Those alone are the options. Your eternal destiny is sealed upon your death. This life is your only opportunity. Hell is the wrath of God in effect. If you do not believe in and belong to Jesus, you are in the path of the wrath of God that ultimately culminates in the conscious, eternal torment of hell.

In one of the most famous stories ever told, Jesus describes an amazing father and his interactions with a rebellious son and a religious son. Are you rebellious or religious? Thankfully, those are not our only options. The redeeming son, Jesus Christ, died so we could put to death our rebellion and our religion, and rose from death to give us his righteousness. Run to the Father whether you are rebellious or religious; he welcomes you home with open arms.

Salvation is one narrow door and that narrow door is Jesus. It is exclusive: there’s one door. It is inclusive: all are welcome. The narrow door divides heaven and hell and it is closing—there is no second chance for salvation after death. When you die, the door slams shut behind you and you will stand before Jesus. He is the one who will judge you. Now he is weeping, inviting you to run by faith through the door that he has suffered, died, and risen to open for you. The decision is yours.

The Pharisees use fear of man to bully the multitudes and keep them from Jesus, and they try to bully Jesus too. Is Jesus or someone else sitting on the throne over your life? Fear of man is when someone other than Jesus sits on that throne. You want to please them, which ultimately is worship and results in anxiety. Jesus teaches that we can overcome fear of man by living for the final judgment day, by being willing to suffer, by remembering the love of God for us, and by replacing fear of man with fear of God, which is the beginning of wisdom.

Jesus plus anything, even religion, ruins everything. Jesus is harsh with the religious people because they are wolves who close their eyes to the light, make rules for God, want praise for themselves, and defend their idols. Religious rules are all about the external—not the internal—and raise human preferences to the level of God’s laws. Religion doesn’t help people; rather, it binds and enslaves them. Religious people try to be holier than Jesus, but we’re saved by Jesus’ works, not our own.

People who are opposed to Jesus throw water on others’ passion for him. Regular practice of the spiritual disciplines (community, Scripture, prayer, worship, giving, serving, obedience, evangelism) kindles Spirit-fired passion. Be more concerned about your eternity than about the weather and the news. Are you going to heaven or hell? Jesus tells us to repent or perish. We all will die and stand before God to give an account for our life. Get ready for that day in court; do not delay. True repentance is confession, contrition, and change; it takes the whole person.

Jesus teaches some parables and principles for prayer. First, our God is good, loving, gracious, and kind, so we should come to him, day or night, 24/7, and ask, seek, and knock. Second, God is a good Father and if we ask him for a good thing, we won’t get a bad thing. A good Father gives good gifts and the greatest gift is the Holy Spirit. Ask, continually, for the Holy Spirit and his help.

Prayer is simply communicating with God. Jesus is the perfect prayer, so he teaches his followers how to pray. First, Jesus teaches that God is our Father. If you want to grow in prayer, don’t focus on prayer. Get to know the Father. If you want to learn how to pray, don’t look at religious people. Look at children with a father who adores them. Through Jesus’ prayer we also learn that our Father is holy, our Father is a king, our Father is generous, our Father forgives sins, and our Father leads well. Our Father hears and answers every prayer.

Are you Mary or Martha? Mary’s contemplative; Martha’s active. Mary’s about being; Martha’s about doing. Martha thought she was going to serve Jesus the good portion, but Mary chose the good portion. Jesus is our good portion that will never be taken away. A meal is temporary, but time with Jesus is a gift that lasts forever. We live in a Martha world; we’re troubled, we’re anxious, and we’re distracted. But God built this world to be a Mary world with Martha moments. When sin entered the world, it turned into a Martha world in which we have to fight for Mary moments. The rhythm of our day is supposed to be Mary first, then Martha. Spend time with Jesus, then get stuff done. Worship like Mary, then work like Martha. Worship God before you work so that you can worship God in your work. We want Mary’s heart and Martha’s hands.

An examination of the gifts of faith, healing, miracles, and discernment. All of these gifts are inextricably linked to the freedom of God to act according to His will. The purpose of these and all gifts is to point to Jesus Christ.

Jesus said that one day Christians would do even greater ministry than He did by the empowerment and gifting of the Holy Spirit. This gifting, however, is often misunderstood. Paul provides clear teaching on the purpose, nature, and goal of “spiritual gifts”.

The Corinthian church had turned the practice of Communion into a mockery of the Gospel by using The Lord’s Supper to partake in drunkeness and favoritism, with little or no focus on Jesus Christ Himself.

This section of Scripture remains wildly misunderstood. Singleness is not ideal, marriage should be honored by all. Practically, however, there are seasons and reasons that provide exceptions to the rule of marriage for some people.

As the old adage goes, you save the best for last. This is why at a concert the biggest hit is the song that closes the show and dessert is saved for the end of a meal. The same is true in Ecclesiastes. The entire book has thus far explored the meaning of our fleeting life, and now gives us the bottom line for how to keep life aligned with God’s will.

Being young is like living in spring. Everything is alive and vibrant. Being old is like living in winter. Things grow dark and dim, and death is foreboding and on its way one day.

I grew up in the Northwest with a lot of trees and loggers. Loggers have particular tools for chopping down giant trees. The butter knife is not among those tools. Why? Not because it is sinful to log with a butter knife. No one ever went to hell because they were logging with a butter knife. Butter knife logging is not sinful, it’s just foolish. Some people are like butter knife loggers. They are doing a good thing in an unproductive way. They waste lots of time and energy only to get minimal results. How can you make your life more efficient? That is the question Solomon is driving at.

How motivated are you, honestly, by winning? Are you as zealous for wisdom as you are for winning?

Don’t let the mundane duties of life rob you of the joy of life. Don’t let the pain of life rob you of the joy of life. Don’t let the mystery of life rob you of the joy of life. Instead, understand that God has a bucket list for you to pursue. It would be sin to disobey his list, and the list might surprise you.

Until the final judgment, we are encouraged to have fun, eat something good, drink something tasty, and make some memories by enjoying life. Life is filled with injustice, frustration, and work to be done. We should work for justice, but, we also need to not become so obsessed, driven, and serious that we lose sight of the goodness of God and greatness of His coming kingdom. Some people are so dour that they accomplish a lot but live very little.

Even the godliest people need to occasionally pull over, ask some diagnostic questions, and make adjustments. In this section of Ecclesiastes we are going to pull over for a soul pit stop and have Solomon run diagnostics on our soul with nine questions to get us healed up, tuned up, and back to enjoying life with God.

Anyone and anything can be broken, taken, or forever changed in an instant. Knowing this leaves us with only a few options: Option A – you get bitter when you lose who/what you enjoyed Option B – enjoy nothing/no one so that you cannot get hurt Option C – enjoy what you have for as long as you can and when it’s gone be grateful to God for what you had

In Western culture, the adults have invented a new game that I like to call “Climb the Ladder.” In Climb the Ladder you look at those people who are above you on the rungs of success. You spend so much time looking at life on their rung - such as the car they drive, house they live in, clothes they wear, food they eat, and social events they enjoy – that when you look down at your rung beneath them you find yourself unhappy.

Class conflict between the rich and poor is seemingly constant, and only increased during an election season. It is common for each side to villainize the other...This conflict is so deep in the roots of western cultures that even Christians get into the mudslinging and name calling. The truth is, you can cherry pick Bible verses to support both sides quite easily, which is what left leaning poverty theology and right leaning prosperity theology tend to do.

Satan and demons are at war against God, angels, and Christians. Satan is the accuser, adversary, destroyer, deceiver, father of lies, tempter, murderer, evil one, and a real enemy. Jesus comes to liberate those who are taken captive in this cosmic battle. When he meets a man possessed by a multitude of demons, he exercises his authority over them. He casts them out of the man and into a large herd of pigs (unclean animals in the Old Covenant), condemning that region’s pagan way of life. The people are scared of Jesus, but the saved man obeys Jesus and stays behind to boldly preach his story about what Jesus did for him—converting many others after him.

Pastor Mark preaches on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus—fully man and fully God—ministered to crowds of thousands. As a man, he was truly exhausted when he and his disciples set out in a boat to cross the sea. He was so tired that he slept through a dangerous storm that made his disciples—experienced fishermen—desperate for help. As God, he commanded the wind and waves to be still; they obeyed Jesus’ voice, the voice of the Creator. The disciples were amazed because only God has such authority. Jesus is the Creator who made the world and the Savior who came into the world to rescue sinners.

When was the last time you met with God? When is the last time you gathered with God’s people for corporate worship? What was the attitude in your heart and mind? Did you come prepared to meet with God, or just roll in and roll out to be entertained as if the point of a worship service was the same as a concert or movie – to put on a good performance for you?

The world is filled with people, and it is tough to figure out which ones you should befriend, allow access to, take advice from, and do life with.

Self esteem. Self improvement. Self help. Self love. Self actualization. Self pride. It’s all self delusion. Preaching from Philippians 2:1-11 Pastor Mark Driscoll teaches how Jesus is for us the most happy person who has ever lived because, in part, He was the most humble.

Paul wrote to the Philippians, alone in a prison, broke, hungry, tired, and was awaiting the possibility of having his head chopped off when he wrote to the church to challenge them to do all things without grumbling or questioning so they could be blameless and innocent in the midst of such a thoroughly jacked up world. Loneliness. We all experience it, sometimes even a crowded room where we are reminded that we are not known, pursued, or loved. To not think about our loneliness we gravitate toward endless hours of mind numbing entertainment such as reality television shows featuring people hanging out with their friends while we sit on our couch alone listening to old Cure songs in the dark. Sound familiar? Do you think you’ve ever worked a day in vain? Do you think you’ve ever shed a tear in vain? Do you think you’ve ever read a Bible verse in vain? Do you think you’ve ever confessed a sin in vain? Do you think a bullet has ever been fired in vain? Do you think a meal has ever been eaten in vain? No. God makes everything beautiful in its time. When? In its time! In HIS time!

If you stop to think about your work, what it’s accomplishing, and why you should keep working, you will likely end up very discouraged, start wearing black, and listening to bands fronted by people whose dad did not hug them enough. But, this kind of reflection on "why we do what we do" is rare because we are so stressed out by our work that we lay awake at night, so overwhelmed by what we have to do that we don’t even have the time or energy to ask if we should be doing it.

Solomon tried to find meaning by enjoying anything and everything apart from God but found it to be a meaningless waste of time. This just goes to prove that you can have a full fridge, full house, full closet, full bank account, full social life, full mind, full stomach, full liquor cabinet, full résumé, full bedroom, yet an empty soul. Everything minus God is nothing. Nothing plus God is everything.

Something has gone terribly wrong and no matter how many organizations we start, elections we hold, wars we fight, dollars we spend, attempts we make, protests we hold, medications we prescribe, bad guys we lock up, or tears we shed, the world is hopelessly crooked and cursed. This bothers us, so we want to straighten it out. The problem is that not only is everything on the earth crooked, so is everyone on the earth. We are all crooked. Every one of us.

According to Ecclesiastes, the evolutionary chart in school fooled us into believing that history is a straight line going up and we are more advanced than those primitive people who came before us. The truth is that history is really a circle, a cul-de-sac to be more exact. One generation after another drives around that cul-de-sac worshiping their idol and trying to outdo their neighbor with more sex, more stuff, more power, more information, and more fame. As fools often do, we mistake movement for progress. With brutal honesty about this fact, Ecclesiastes feels more like a punch in the gut than a kiss on the lips.

Jesus teaches that identity results in activity: who we are in Christ determines what we do. If you are a light, shine in the darkness of the world. Your light also should continue to grow brighter. Maturing as a Christian requires listening carefully to God’s Word and God’s preachers. The powerful preacher George Whitefield (1714–1770) offers six exhortations for how to listen to a sermon. Finally, in the church, serve like family; true family members hear what they are supposed to hear, and then do what they’re supposed to do.

A notoriously sinful woman does the unthinkable: she goes, uninvited, to Simon the Pharisee’s home, where Jesus is eating with “holy” religious men. There, broken and sobbing, she lavishly worships Jesus: falling at his feet, cleaning them, anointing them with her best perfume, and kissing them. Her actions are passionate, but not erotic. She publicly and humbly acknowledges her sin before the most judgmental, condemning, and self-righteous men. Religious people see others’ sins, not their own. Yet “holy” Simon did none of what this woman did (worship, serve, repent of sin, or give generously). She responds so passionately and generously because Jesus loved her much, and she loved Jesus much. When you know how much Jesus loves you, and you love him back, it’s the beginning of your passionate, worshipful, generous relationship, and everything changes. Jesus also deals with her sin. He doesn’t excuse her many sins; he forgives her. What Jesus did for that woman he did for other women who followed him, and he continues to do for even more women today.

John was great because he called people to true repentance (not its counterfeits, such as religious repentance, pagan repentance, worldly sorrow, mere confession, blame shifting, minimizing, and excuse making), because he endured impossible people, and because he suffered critics. Above all, though, John was great because he was filled with the Holy Spirit; like a kite filled with the power of the wind, he flew high and strong. That’s such a better life than a kite that never gets out of the box.

Jesus says that “among those born of women none is greater than John.” John was great because he sought answers for his questions about Jesus, because he trusted in Jesus, and because he was fearless in his service to Jesus. John lived a great, big, bold, humble life by the power of the Holy Spirit, and only by that power can we do the same.

Jesus finds wrecked people. He pursues people who don’t ask for him and comforts people who don’t seek him. Jesus literally reaches into death and brings life, both for the dead son of the widow and for all Jesus’ people. Dead people do nothing to participate in their healing; it is solely a gift of grace. Jesus is an even greater risen son who conquered death for all the children of God.

Pastor Mark continues preaching on the Beatitudes, examining principles from Jesus’ teaching: 1) Forgiven people should forgive; 2) Getters should be givers; 3) Leaders should lead themselves; 4) Good trees should produce good fruit; and 5) Truth plus obedience equals a rock-solid foundation. We are all hypocrites who are blind to our own blindness. We need to be uprooted and replanted for new lives and legacies built on the firm foundation of Jesus Christ.

Jesus heals a centurion’s servant, a man who is near death. The religious people still do not understand that it is all about grace, not works or merit. Being a moral, upstanding citizen—like the centurion—will not earn you forgiveness or salvation. Even though the centurion was an honorable man, he still needed to place his faith in Jesus; he did just that and Jesus was amazed at his faith. Jesus is a greater warrior worthy of the worship of all soldiers; we want them to know, love, and serve Jesus, which is why we have a Military Ministry at Mars Hill.

Pastor Mark preaches on the Beatitudes at the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus spent much of his ministry. Jesus taught that he is the King of kings who is bringing a countercultural kingdom. The kingdom of God is not about getting wealth, power, comfort, or fame. It’s about being in relationship with God—loving God and loving others, especially your enemies.

Jesus calls the twelve disciples—and all of his people today—to transition from a come-and-see experience to a go-and-die life. We can learn eleven leadership lessons from Jesus’ selection of the twelve disciples, so that, by the Holy Spirit’s power, we will follow Jesus’ leadership example and have a church that is patterned after Jesus’ ministry.

The religious legalists swarm around Jesus to argue with him about the Sabbath. They come not to listen, but to criticize. Religious legalism is adding rules to the Bible, and it is the enemy of Jesus Christ. Legalism makes you bold, unbiblical, arrogant, unloving, and dangerous. The result of religion is a paint-by-numbers life. It’s artless and heartless. There are seven steps—to avoid—to become a legalist.

The people of Capernaum are amazed at Jesus’ authority in preaching, in healing, and in commanding unclean spirits, or demons. There are two erroneous reactions to the topic of demons: the first is to deny they exist, and the second is to obsess over them. Instead, if we know our enemy and understand his schemes, he cannot easily outwit us. Our life is like a house; for Christians, Satan never owns the house, Jesus does, but Satan can influence and oppress. We must recognize the ways in which we could leave doors and windows to our house open (such as through unrepentant, habitual sin). Through repentance and faith in Jesus because of his death, burial, and resurrection, our allegiance to Satan is canceled, and our freedom in Christ is granted. God’s enemy becomes our enemy and Jesus’ authority becomes our authority.

Jesus loves sinners and was a missionary who went into the culture among sinners. He publicly picked, pursued, and called Levi—a despised tax collector—to repent of his ways and follow him. A good missionary: 1) follows Jesus; 2) starts a community group (welcoming other people into your life and home, as Levi did); and 3) repents, repents, repents. At Mars Hill Church, we gather (come together as God’s people for preaching, teaching, and worship) and scatter (go out as God’s people for mission and community) because Jesus did both. The scribes and Pharisees complained when they saw Jesus as a missionary with sinners; they didn’t understand that everyone is a sick sinner who needs Jesus, the great physician, to heal them.

Jesus gave his life for the glory of God and the good of others, and we should too. 1) Pour yourself out in ministry. Do something, anything, for Jesus. 2) Rest and recover in solitude. 3) Pursue your calling, not your potential. Those who don’t have a sense of calling exchange busyness for fruitfulness. Live your life intentionally by pursuing the things that God has gifted and called you to. 4) Train other leaders. Here, Jesus calls his first disciples, Peter, James, and John, and they leave everything to follow him. For them (as it should be for all Christians and churches), it was all about evangelism—people meeting Jesus.

Jesus changes lives, and we see two examples in Luke 5:12–26. There, Jesus heals a man full of leprosy; not only that, but he reaches out and touches him, like he touches all who are unclean. Jesus also heals a paralytic and forgives him of his sin. The religious people question Jesus and accuse him of blasphemy. They just don’t get it: Jesus cleanses us from our filth, Jesus forgives our sin, and Jesus saves us from our religion.

The crowds that came to John the Baptizer wondered if he was the Christ, but John humbly pointed to Jesus. John wanted all to realize that Jesus was greater than him, Jesus’ baptism was greater than his, and Jesus’ judgment was greater than his. In the end, Jesus will judge everyone, separating the wheat (those who repent and abide in him) from the chaff (those who do not and are blown away). John called even Herod to repent, and was imprisoned and beheaded as a result. Even though Jesus was sinless, he came down to be baptized by John, and the entire Trinity was present. The Holy Spirit descended like a dove and rested on Jesus, and the Father spoke from heaven, to reveal that Jesus is God: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” All those in Christ are now God’s sons as well.

In the final installment of the Vintage Jesus series, Pastor Mark Driscoll gives a Christmas Eve service on the historical significance of the birth of Jesus Christ and what kind of lasting change his birth has left on earth.

Jesus preaches in his hometown of Nazareth, but the people reject him. They would rather kill Jesus than kill their religion. He teaches from 1 Kings 17 (Elijah and a pagan widow) and 2 Kings 5 (Elisha and Naaman the leper) to show that even religious people are as needy as the starving widow and that their sin is as horrific as leprosy. We see in this passage at least eight ways we could be compelled to reject Jesus: theology, control, greed, selfishness, familiarity, comfort, embarrassment, and religion.

Jesus was a world-class, Spirit-filled preacher of Scripture. At the beginning of his ministry, he traveled throughout the Galilean region, preaching in synagogues. When he preached in his hometown of Nazareth, he unrolled and read from the scroll of Isaiah; Jesus taught that he is the fulfillment of Scripture. He takes care of the poor, the captives, the blind, and the oppressed. Jesus is our riches, freedom, sight, and liberation.

Jesus’ genealogy shows us that God works faithfully from one generation to the next. God redeems messed up families and raises up new patriarchs and matriarchs to create new family lines because of his covenantal faithfulness to and love for ill-deserving people. Four covenant heads are mentioned in Jesus’ genealogy from Luke: David, Abraham, Noah, and Adam. Each points to and foreshadows Jesus, but Jesus is greater than all four. If we are born again in Jesus, we are added to his family line as well.

Temptation is like bait on a hook. Satan will bait the hook with anything enticing enough to get you to bite, then he will reel you in to death. Jesus was tempted in every way by Satan, but never sinned. Jesus responded by quoting Scripture, that is, the sword of the Spirit, even after Satan tried to turn the sword against him. In light of Luke 4, Pastor Mark shares ten temptation truths to help us resist the bait: # Satan is a real Enemy; # Satan will H.I.T. you; # Jesus is your victorious Warrior-King; # The Holy Spirit is your power; # Biblical truth is your counterpunch; # Christ is your identity; # Escape is always possible; # Satan eventually taps out; # Repent whenever you tap out and fight another round; and # Life is a battle with many rounds.

Pastor Mark defines what worship is, what worship isn’t, and points out some of the false gods our culture encourages us to worship. He then goes on to explain what it means to worship through Jesus, worship like Jesus, and to just plain worship Jesus as our most worthy Savior.

Pastor Mark Driscoll examines the birth of Jesus from Luke 2 in light of four categories: the historical (what God said and did), the theological (what that means), the biographical (how that changes us), and the doxological (how we worship). He answers seven common questions about the incarnation of Jesus Christ (that is, when God became flesh and entered into human history) and shares how we can have comfort and encouragement because Jesus is like us, Jesus is unlike us, and he came to make us like him.

In the sixth sermon in the Vintage Jesus series, Pastor Mark talks about what will happen to creation, Christians, and non-Christians upon Jesus’ return.

Pastor Mark Driscoll examines Luke 2, one of the most familiar passages of Scripture, where an angel announces the birth of Jesus, “Christ the Lord,” to shepherds in a field. The angel reveals how we are to see Jesus. We are not to insert him into a false ideology, such as atheism, deism, pantheism or panentheism, or theism; these offer no hope, no good news, and no savior. Rather, we are to praise Jesus as the Savior, Christ the Lord—good news for all the people—like the angels, Mary, and the shepherds did.

To begin the Advent season, Pastor Mark describes 25 of the more than 60 prophecies pointing to the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

Pastor Mark explains how Jesus came to earth to be our prophet, priest, and King.

In light of numerous idols in the world today that promise salvation, Pastor Mark explains that Jesus is the only true Savior who can save us from our plight. He then goes on to explain how Jesus saves and what he is able to save us from.

Pastor Mark preaches on the southern steps of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem—on the same steps that Jesus himself would have walked. Jesus was first brought up the steps by his parents to be dedicated in the temple; as a boy, Jesus debated with scholars at the temple, and as a man he taught day after day in the temple. Still, Jesus promised to destroy, and did destroy, the temple because it had become an idol. We do not need the temple today because Jesus has fulfilled all of its functions.

Pastor Mark preaches from the Jordan River, where John the Baptizer baptized many, including Jesus Christ. John preached a baptism of repentance to the religious people who came to hear him, whom he called a “brood of vipers.” John urged them to live a life of true repentance instead, which includes conviction, confession, repentance, and restitution. Baptism shows that repentance is made possible through Jesus—his life, death, burial, and resurrection.

Besides Jesus, John the Baptizer was the greatest man to ever live. We can learn from seven aspects of his greatness—including that he was a Spirit-filled evangelist who humbly prepared the way for Jesus. He avoided adolescence and thus is a great example of what it means to be a real man. Real men are creators and cultivators, not childish consumers, cowards, or complainers.

Jesus claimed to be God, but is his claim exclusive? Or, is Jesus one of many gods through him we find salvation?

John the Baptizer’s birth was prophesied in Malachi 3:1; 4:5–6. Then, after 400 years of silence, during the time of Herod “the great,” in the city of Jerusalem, at the Temple, we meet Zechariah, a priest, and his wife, Elizabeth. They were old, barren, poor, and righteous. Zechariah wasn’t a big deal; he was no one from nowhere doing, in the sight of the world, nothing. He was finally picked to go inside the Temple and burn incense, representing our prayers to God. While inside, the angel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah and told him that his prayer was answered and he would have a son who would be great. The baby, John (meaning “God is gracious”), is named by God and filled with the Spirit from his mother’s womb. But Zechariah did not believe the angel, so he was made mute. The couple returned home, Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she stayed home, praising God for taking away her reproach, or shame and disgrace, among the people.

This week we meet Mary, the mother of Jesus. Though many images of Mary throughout the centuries picture her as a thirty-year-old woman with perfect hair, no dirt under her nails, and a golden crown, the truth is that she was a teenager from an unremarkable town; a virgin, pledged to be married to a carpenter named Joseph. The angel Gabriel, who had announced John the Baptizer’s birth to Zechariah, showed up and told Mary that God was going to show her favor, or grace, and that she would conceive and give birth to a son, Jesus, the Son of God. In response, Mary asked a question, “How?” but she did not show unbelief like Zechariah had. Gabriel explained to her, “Nothing will be impossible with God.” Mary responded in faith by saying, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Thus, Mary is not the object of our faith but a great example of faith.

Pastor Mark Driscoll kicks off this three-year sermon series, introducing us to Luke the book (the longest in the New Testament and containing 41 unique passages found nowhere else in the Bible), Luke the author (well-educated Gentile who also wrote Acts), and Luke the man (medical doctor and humble, faithful friend to Paul). Luke’s Gospel is written to Theophilus (which means “lover of God”), and all of us who are or would be lovers of God are encouraged to follow along Luke’s meticulous investigation of the facts and eyewitness accounts concerning Jesus’ life, death, burial, and resurrection. Theophilus’ generosity to fund Luke’s expensive investigation means that today, two thousand years later, we get to read the books Luke wrote, Luke and Acts. Thus, we are encouraged to follow the sacrificial examples of humble Luke and generous Theophilus.

Mary is a chief example for us of faith and worship in response to God. She sings a song of praise to God, and in it lists at least 17 attributes of God and echoes a multitude of Old Testament Scriptures—even though she was likely illiterate. From her song, we are encouraged to replace worrying with worshiping, replace coveting with worshiping, and replace anxiety with history. Even though Mary has plenty to worry about, she worships God and is a happy worshiper. She knows that God has “done great things for [her],” and one practical way we can worship is by recording and remembering evidences of God’s grace—how he has done great things for us personally and for others we know.

Pregnant Mary walks many miles to visit pregnant Elizabeth so they can share in each other’s joy and be in community together. The baby in Elizabeth’s womb, John the Baptizer, leaps for joy when he hears Mary’s greeting, and Elizabeth prophesies that Mary is blessed. Thus, we see that a baby in the womb is indeed a baby, that children are a blessing from God, and that abortion is murder. We all, through sin, have bloody hands as murderers of Jesus, but he offers his nail-scarred hands—life for life—to save us. He died in our place for our sin, and the proper response is faith and worship, as exemplified by Mary, Elizabeth, and John.

When the Holy Spirit shows up, the church springs into being: people are born again and they become, together, the people of God. But what is church? And what do good churches look like? One of the most important decisions you’ll ever make is what church you’ll call home. And in order to find a good one, first you’ll need to know what a good church comprises.

Picking up where the Gospel of Luke left off, the book of Acts describes how Jesus, having finished his work on the Cross, begins to build his kingdom on earth through the power of the Holy Spirit. This power has been given to all Christians, to be used properly, following the example set by Jesus. How was Jesus empowered by the Spirit? How is he using this power to accomplish his mission?

How did the disciples begin executing the biggest mission in the history of the world? The Bible says that while waiting for the Holy Spirit, they devoted themselves to prayer—they talked to God. The apostles led by following Scripture—through it, God responded. Consequently, the early church experienced success—but not without undergoing failure first. What can we learn from what they did?
