In 1983, two Japanese scientists, Masaki Morimoto and Hisashi Hirabayashi, pioneers in the field of radioastronomy and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), got inebriated as they celebrated the Tanabata star festival. They decided to use a radio telescope at Stanford to send a message to one of the brightest stars in the sky, Altair. In the message was information about our planet, our evolution, the human species, and even a high-spirited sign-off, sending both the English word "TOAST" and the Japanese equivalent, "KANPAI" (乾杯). And I love the playful sentiment. 40 years later, their scientific progeny are listening for a response. Spoiler alert. We haven't heard back... yet. But we also explore the nature of these and other messages to possible intelligent alien life out there listening like we are. We touch upon SETI, the Arecibo message, and a few other attempts at establishing a first contact with an extraterrestrial alien species. Tonight we explore the strange reality of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity and what it means for 3 dimensional beings born into a 4 dimensional Universe. It's main article is about the LEM (Lunar Module) which was the tiny spacecraft that detached from the Apollo Command Module in lunar orbit and sent Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descending onto the lunar surface to be the first ever humans to step foot on another world. We also browse the rest of the issue and look at some of the more interesting ads of the late 1960's. Lot's of unique and memorable marketing of clothing, appliances, insurance, and of course, booze and cigarettes. Additional context: This issue was from March 1969, and that Apollo 11 mission didn't happen until July of 1969, so it's fascinating to travel back in time and think about the anticipation of the event just 3 months later. This is an exploration of the greatest discoveries in cosmology, the great scientists and astronomers behind them, and the still unresolved mysteries of the Universe at the most extreme scales of time, gravity, and distance across the deepest space.  This is part of a larger script I wrote for the James Webb Space Telescope: The Big Bang, Dark Matter, the Cosmic Microwave Background, Cosmic Web Filaments, the End of Greatness, Inflation, Dark Energy, and there's still so many questions about the nature of our Universe. Tonight we learn what the current lambda cold dark matter big bang model of the universe says happened from the first few seconds to the first few million years after the universe was thought have come into existence. We learn what older cosmological theories evolved into and how our conception of light, matter and energy has changed over that last few centuries as our understanding of them has deepened. We learn what the biggest mysteries of physics and cosmology still are and about the huge gaps in our understanding of the cosmic dark ages, the dark matter halos around nearly all galaxies, and how the still-mysterious phenomena of the big bang, inflation, and dark energy is propelling galaxies apart. It was agreed among most of the "Framers" of the Constitution that a direct, popular vote for President meant that 51% of citizens could be cajoled into voting for a great showman but incompetent leader. In 1776, the States had essentially evolved into their own countries, but had to form a federation (now the oldest extant one in the world) or be conquered by the 18th century European superpowers (England, Spain, and France). Because of their colonial origins though, they demanded to retain their sovereign right to make laws that represented the will of their people. So, the electoral college was created and cemented into the U.S. Constitution as a way for each State's directly-elected officials (representing the voice of the people, and liable to be voted out of office if failing to do so) to personally vet and select "Electors" from their State whose sole task was to deliberate and vote for a President. Each State would receive a number of Electors equal to the number of representatives they have in the U.S. Congress. (This is 2 senators for every State, and a number of Representatives proportional to the State's population.) Which ever Presidential Candidate wins the majority (greater than 50%) of electoral votes wins. This is part 2 (out of who knows how many...) of our adventure through this nearly 200 year-old astronomy atlas, "Geography of the Heavens" by Elijah Burritt, an early 19th century black smith-turned-educator. *My even older copy of Burritt's book came in a couple days ago and I couldn't have been more pleased. It's binding almost fell apart, so I was extra careful with handling it. We look in detail at the preface and introductory essay titled "Advantages of the Study of Astronomy."

Santa Claus is one of the last living mythical figures. The image of the modern Santa is derived from a few 19th century children's stories, but the idea these were based on goes back hundreds, and very likely tens of thousands of years into the past of humanity. Also known as Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, or Kris Kringle, Santa is a legendary figure originating in Western Christian culture who is said to bring gifts to the homes of well-behaved children on the night of Christmas Eve (24 December) or during the early morning hours of Christmas Day (25 December).   The modern Santa Claus grew out of traditions surrounding the historical Saint Nicholas (a fourth-century Greek bishop and gift-giver of Myra), the British figure of Father Christmas, and the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas (himself also based on Saint Nicholas). Some maintain Santa Claus also absorbed elements of the Germanic god Wodan (AKA Odin, Wotan), who was associated with the pagan midwinter event of Yule and led the Wild Hunt, a ghostly procession through the sky.   Santa means "Saint" and Claus is short for "Nicholas." So it's easy to follow the evolution of the 4th Century, Turkish Bishop as his life became a story, and the myth became a symbol for good behavior, glad tidings, and warm gatherings. But, thanks to the author of Santa Sold Shrooms, Tero Isokauppila, the core ideas of Santa's character may have roots much deeper than even early Roman Christianity. The earliest credible evidence of coffee-drinking appears in Yemen in southern Arabia in the middle of the 15th century in Sufi shrines. It was here in Arabia that coffee seeds were first roasted and brewed in a similar way to how it is now prepared. Coffee seeds were first exported from East Africa to Yemen, as the Coffea arabica plant is thought to have been indigenous to the former. Yemeni traders took coffee back to their homeland and began to cultivate the seed. By the 16th century, it had reached Persia, Turkey, and North Africa. From there, it spread to Europe and the rest of the world.

Captain James Cook is known for his extensive voyages that took him throughout the Arctic and Pacific Oceans in the mid-1700's. Unbeknownst to his crew, he had simultaneously been sent on a clandestine voyage by the British government to discover the lost continent of Antarctica, at that time called "Terra Australis." During this journey, he mapped several island groups in the Pacific that had been previously discovered by other explorers. But he was the first European we know of to encounter the Hawaiian Islands. While on these voyages, Cook discovered that New Zealand was an island. He would go on to discover and chart coastlines from the Arctic to the Antarctic, east coast of Australia to the west coast of North America plus the hundreds of islands in between. Comet "C/2019 Q4 Borisov" was discovered on August 30th, 2019 by Ukrainian amateur astronomer Gennady Borisov. Science evolved, emerged and emancipated humans out of our long past. It's helped us more sharply define the world around us and use it's immutable forces for our own purposes. It's given us a standard of interpreting the world. It's shown us how insignificant Earth is in size, and how impossibly rare it is in complexity. The Ancient Greeks believed that in the beginning, the world was in a state of nothingness, which they called chaos. Suddenly, from light, came Gaia (mother earth) and Uranus (the sky) along with other old gods(called primordials) like Tatartus (the pit of eternal damnation) and Pontus (the primordial god of the oceans). Gaia and Uranus had 6 sets of twins. The most important of the 12 children were Kronos and Rhea. Gaia gave birth to some monsters called cyclops and the hundred handed ones. Uranus disliked the monsters, so he threw them in Tatartus. Gaia, angered by Uranus, sought revenge on Uranus. Gaia used her son Kronos, who chopped off Uranus' genitals. Kronos threw Uranus into the ocean. From the blood of his genitals, came the goddess of love and beauty—Aphrodite. Kronos married his sister Rhea and gave birth to 6 children, who were called the gods.Kronos, who was afraid of a prophecy delivered to him a while ago(which stated that one day his children will cut him up), swallowed each of his children each time they were born. Rhea did not like this, so she saved Zeus and gave Kronos a rock to eat instead. Zeus was raised by a centaur named Chiron, who is also the son of Kronos, in a mountain cave.When Zeus was old enough, he tricked Kronos into drinking a mixture of wine and mustard. Kronos vomited up the rest of the gods, who, being immortal, had been growing up completely undigested in Kronos' stomach.Zeus and other gods, then had a big war with the Titans.Zeus won and banished Kronos to Tartarus. We have a life, and we can chose to exercise it or let it atrophy. He encourages the former.

These books are some of the most widely known, read, and listened to by children since the 1960's. And it's no surprise. Their stories are powerful. The imagination is a powerful thing, and timeless children's books like these are a testament to brilliant capturing of it in word and art. Leonhard Euler was a Swiss mathematician, physicist, astronomer, logician and engineer, who made profound and influential discoveries in many branches of mathematics. The human brain is like nothing else. It's only 3 pounds and from the outside layer, it just sort of looks like a round, corrugated grey blob with the consistency of something between jelly and cold butter. It doens't expand or shrink like the lungs, pump like the heart, or secrete visible material like the bladder. But inside this unprepossesing structure that caps the body, lies the most complex structure we've yet encountered in all our probings of the universe. It's the seat of consciousness: able to think about itself, no to mention the environment it resides in. It autonomously keeps the rest of the body in motion, our emotions balanced, our chemicals at near ideal ratios. It even has a boggling adaptive nature that can compensate and maintain relatively normal functioning even if huge parts of it are destroyed. And although technology is allowing us more insight than ever, we still haven't the fainest clue what makes us awake and aware of the world around us. Our star, the Sun. As mysterious as it surely was to our ancient ancestors, it’s no mystery why they worshiped and feared it. It’s the source of all life on Earth. The sun warms our planet every day, provides the light by which we see and nourishes the plants that support the food chain we sit so precariously atop of. It can also cause cell death and make us blind. It could fit 1.3 million Earths inside its sphere. It produces poem-worthy sunsets and as much energy as 1 trillion megaton bombs every second. All of this, and our sun is just a plain old average star, by universal standards. It’s really just proximity that makes it so special to Earth. We wouldn’t be here if the sun weren’t so close. So, how close is the sun? And how much space does it take to hold 1.3 million Earths? A star is type of astronomical object consisting of a luminous spheroid of plasma held together by its own gravity. The nearest star to Earth is the Sun. Many other stars are visible to the naked eye from Earth during the night, appearing as a multitude of fixed luminous points in the sky due to their immense distance from Earth. Historically, the most prominent stars were grouped into constellations and asterisms, the brightest of which gained proper names. Astronomers have assembled star catalogues that identify the known stars and provide standardized stellar designations. However, most of the stars in the Universe, including all stars outside our galaxy, the Milky Way, are invisible to the naked eye from Earth.   Turtles play positive roles in the folklore of many Native American tribes. In the creation myths of some East Coast tribes (such as the Iroquois and Lenape), the Great Spirit created their homeland by placing earth on the back of a giant turtle. This is why some contemporary Native Americans refer to North America by the name "Turtle Island." Turtles are a symbol of the earth in many different Native cultures. To Plains Indians, turtles are associated with long life, protection, and fertility. In some Plains tribes, a newborn girl's umbilical cord was sewn into a figure in the shape of a turtle to ensure her health and safety.
