570 WSYR "YOUR HEALTH MATTERS" - Ep #26: Trump Shooting | BE KIND | The Great Divide | Gym Etiquette

This episode aired July 14, 2024, on the YOUR HEALTH MATTERS radio show with Karl Sterling and Elizabeth Brusa on News Radio 570 WSYR AM, also available on 106.9 FM. This show was a unique experience, delving into important health-related topics. It wasn't just about physical health but also about fostering a respectful and enriching environment. ### Key Topics We Explored We started by addressing the great divide within our society, focusing on the recent Trump shooting. There is no room for such violence. The idea that Biden prompted this is absurd unless future evidence proves otherwise. Both Trump and Biden have their haters, but regardless of political differences, we discussed using this event to unite us rather than divide us. We then explored politics and hatred, societal behaviors such as lack of responsibility, respect, and action. We examined weaknesses in society and individuals, lack of leadership, and prevalence of ignorance and entitlement. Our segment on "Being Respectful to Others" highlighted respect's power in building stronger communities. "Not Being an Ass" addressed our behavior's impact and practicing empathy and kindness consistently. We discussed altruism and community service in "Serving Others," sharing stories of people making a difference. In "Eliminating Greed and Control Issues," we explored the toxic effects of greed on mental health and strategies to cultivate generosity. "Not Judging People" emphasized the importance of an open mind and acceptance, providing tips on overcoming biases. "Thinking More Like God Rather Than Like a Human" delved into spiritual perspectives on life and relationships. We also covered practical advice in "Not Being a Burden to Others," focusing on maintaining independence while balancing the need for help. "Not Being an Energy Sucker or an Emotional Suction Cup" taught how to avoid draining behaviors and boost energy and resilience. In "Not Being Rude and Imposing Yourself in the Space of Others," we discussed respecting personal boundaries and the etiquette of thoughtful communication. Our segment on "Gym Etiquette" outlined rules for a respectful gym environment. "Just Being NICE and Showing Love and Respect to Others" explored the ripple effect of kindness, highlighting simple acts that make a big difference. "Exercising the Power of Your Brain and Your Free Will" focused on leveraging mental strength and free will to make healthier choices. As we navigated these discussions, we reflected on the impact of simple acts of kindness, respect, and thoughtful behavior. Each positive change starts with a single step. Let's use our free will and mental strength to create a better world, one respectful interaction at a time. ### Our Sponsor for This Show Motion Guidance TM is a Physical Therapist Owned and Operated Company dedicated to introducing novel therapy products to improve rehabilitative methods. 570 WSYR "YOUR HEALTH MATTERS" Ep #16: Motivation, Persistence, & Consistency w/ Karl Sterling

This episode aired 5/5/24 on YOUR HEALTH MATTERS on News Radio 570 WSYR, Syracuse. In this episode, I delve into the critical elements that underpin a successful health and fitness journey: motivation, persistence, and consistency. Today, I want to share with you the insights and personal experiences that have shaped my understanding of what it truly takes to maintain a healthy lifestyle over the long haul. Setting Realistic Goals and Anticipating Setbacks The path to wellness is rarely a straight line. It's filled with ups and downs, and that's why setting realistic goals is paramount. I've learned that when we set achievable targets, we're more likely to stay motivated and less likely to get discouraged by the inevitable setbacks. It's not just about the end result; it's about celebrating the small victories along the way. Building a Support System for Success No one achieves greatness alone. In my fitness journey, I've found that having a support system is invaluable. Whether it's a workout buddy, a personal trainer, or a community of like-minded individuals, surrounding yourself with people who encourage and challenge you can make all the difference. My Personal Experience with Exercise and Weightlifting I've always been passionate about exercise, particularly weightlifting. It's not just about looking good; it's about the profound benefits it brings to your health. Building muscle mass isn't just for athletes; it's a crucial aspect of aging well and maintaining functional strength throughout your life. The Surprising Benefits of Bio Density In the episode, I introduced listeners to the concept of bio density and its potential to revolutionize how we approach conditions like osteoporosis. This innovative approach to building bone density can also significantly improve muscle health, offering a beacon of hope for those looking to enhance their quality of life. Rethinking Weight Loss: The Muscle Mass Factor One common misconception I often encounter is the overemphasis on weight loss. While shedding excess pounds is important, it's equally crucial to focus on building and maintaining muscle mass. Muscle is not only metabolically active but also plays a key role in our overall health and longevity. Muscle Mass and Survivability: The Cancer Connection Perhaps one of the most profound discussions in the episode was the correlation between muscle mass and survivability in cancer patients. The impact of exercise on circulating tumor cells offers a new perspective on the role of physical activity in cancer care. Conclusion: Embracing the Three Pillars of Lifelong Health As we wrapped up the episode, I left listeners with a call to action: harness the power of motivation, persistence, and consistency. Whether it's through your exercise programming, dietary habits, or mindset, these three pillars are the foundation of lifelong health and fitness. Remember, it's not about being perfect; it's about making progress. Track your journey, adjust as needed, and most importantly, never give up on yourself. Your future self will thank you for the investment you make today. Until next time, stay strong, stay healthy, and keep pushing forward. I hope this blog post captures the essence of the podcast episode and inspires readers to take action towards their health and fitness goals. Vibration Therapy, Obesity, & Longevity: Your Health Matters With Karl Sterling 3 31 24

Ever pondered how our ancestors remained fit without gyms? They had "incidental exercise" built into their daily lives, something we've sadly lost in our sedentary modern world. Let's take inspiration from the pre-1940s and integrate more natural movement into our days for better health. #HistoryOfFitness #MoveMore Reflecting on Easter, a time of renewal, I'm reminded of the profound impact health has on our ability to serve others. Personal well-being extends beyond self; it's about being there for those we love. Let's all renew our commitment to health this season. #WellnessRenewal Staggering to learn that the obesity trend could reduce life expectancy in the U.S. It's not just about numbers on a scale; it's about the quality and length of life. Approaching this with compassion rather than judgment is vital. #ObesityAwareness #HealthStats Did you know that maintaining muscle mass is crucial for longevity? Our medical approach is evolving, from "medicine 10, 20, 30" to more holistic, preventative care. It's time we all focus on building strength to support our overall health. #MuscleMatters #PreventativeHealth Today, I want to share something close to my heart: the interplay of faith and health. My journey has taught me that caring for our health is one of the many ways we can serve and show love to others. It's a mission that goes beyond mere personal gains. #HealthAndFaith http://www.karlsterling.com

Show aired on NEWS RADIO 570 WSYR / 106.9 FM on February 4, 2024 Dr. Dale Bredesen's latest work continues to focus on groundbreaking approaches to Alzheimer's disease, emphasizing the reversibility and treatability of cognitive decline through a precision medicine approach. His work, particularly through the Bredesen Protocol®, has been showcased in various platforms and resources. Dr. Bredesen's approach is holistic, focusing on seven distinct strategies that include nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress reduction, brain stimulation, detoxification, and supplements. These strategies aim to create neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to form new neural connections, thereby promoting healing and cognitive improvement. This multifaceted approach is designed to optimize conditions for brain health, potentially reversing the symptoms of Alzheimer's and other forms of cognitive decline. His research and methodology challenge the traditional view of Alzheimer's as an unpreventable and irreversible disease. Karl Sterling talks bioDensity on Dr. Joe Barry's Radio show: Osteoperosis and Osteopenia

bioDensity is a safe and controlled approach offering the benefits of high impact activity without the risk of heavy lifting or jumping. Regular use of the bioDensity improves the structures of the body, the building blocks of movement and function for increased quality of life. Studies have shown that once-weekly, bioDensity sessions can improve bone density to combat osteoporosis and osteopenia, as well as improving lipids and blood sugar (A1C) measurements in type 2 diabetics. Your initial bioDensity session will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. The session can be completed in street clothes (flat soled shoes are recommended). Subsequent sessions are typically shorter in duration. There are four main movements in using this machine. When completing the four movements in bioDensity you will be required to produce maximal force for 5 seconds. The force would be similar in nature to pushing or lifting an object of significant weight and size in four different directions: (1) forward using your hands; (2) forward using your feet; (3) upward using your knees and (4) upward using your arms and legs together. After completing a bioDensity session you may feel like you've completed physical work. You will feel warm from increased blood circulation and from work completed by the muscles. Within 24 hours you may feel muscular fatigue, but you are not likely to feel soreness. Since the movements only require five (5) seconds of maximal work, your body will not produce the by-products which cause muscle soreness. Users often comment on their improved mood and confidence as a result of their documented success. Book your session by contacting Karl Sterling at 315-935-7488 (text or call)

Dale Bredesen, MD: The First Survivors of Alzheimer's: How Patients Recovered Life and Hope

In this interview, I talk with Dr. Dale Bredesen about his latest research on Alzheimer's and about his latest book entitled, The First Survivors of Alzheimer's: How Patients Recovered Life and Hope in Their Own Words It has been said that everyone knows a cancer survivor, but no one has met an Alzheimer's survivor – until now. In his first two books, Dr. Dale Bredesen outlined the revolutionary treatments that are changing what had previously seemed like the inevitable outcome of cognitive decline and dementia. And in these moving narratives, you can hear directly from the first survivors of Alzheimer’s themselves--their own amazing stories of hope told in their own words. These first person accounts honestly detail the fear, struggle, and ultimate victory of each patient's journey. They vividly describe what it is like to have Alzheimer's. They also drill down on how each of these patients made the program work for them--the challenges, the workarounds, the encouraging results that are so motivating. Dr. Bredesen includes commentary following each story to help point readers to the tips and tricks that might help them as well. Dr. Bredesen's patients have not just survived; they have thrived to rediscover fulfilling lives, rewarding relationships, and meaningful work. This book will give unprecedented hope to patients and their families.

Dr. Wendy Suzuki: GOOD ANXIETY: Harnessing the Power of the Most Misunderstood Emotion

From a global pandemic, to political divisions and climate change, the past year and a half has been stressful. It’s no wonder so many of us are dealing with feelings of unease and even panic. — In fact, even prior to the pandemic, an estimated 90 percent of the population is affected by some degree of anxiety. For most of us, it would be difficult to describe anxiety as a good feeling. But what if it could be? What if we could work with our anxiety rather than against it and use it to be more productive, more optimistic, more creative, and ultimately more resilient? World - renowned neuroscientist Dr. Wendy Suzuki has found a way to unlock the potential of anxiety to be a benefit instead of a drawback and reveals that anxiety is not only essential for our survival but also a key component of our ability to live optimally. Drawing from Suzuki’s personal experience with anxiety and cutting-edge neuroscience research, her new book "GOOD ANXIETY: Harnessing the Power of the Most Misunderstood Emotion" helps us understand how simple but powerful shifts in mindset and tangible, practical strategies can help us transform our social anxiety, fear of performance, or fear of public speaking into positive and empowering assets.

Interview with Steve Hunt: Connections!

In this interview, keyboardist and composer, Steve Hunt talks about his upcoming release entitled CONNECTIONS. This new album features an allstar lineup of musicians, including Jimmy Haslip, Chad Wackerman, Gary Husband, Vinnie Colauita, Virgil Donati, Nate Wood, Evan Marien, Jimmy Johnson, Eric Marienthal, Billy Cobham, and many others. We also talked about his work with Allan Holdsworth, Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, and others. Pianist Steve Hunt, throughout his career, has stayed true to an uncompromising vision of composing and performing jazz music from his heart. Steve has continued to push himself technically, focusing on a musical style which is both challenging and meaningful... Steve credits jazz greats Keith Jarrett, Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and Thelonius Monk as strong influences to his jazz style. During his formative years he studied with concert pianist Albert Hirsh, and jazz pianists Sid Davis and Lyle Mays who all helped form his lighting fast technique and unique style. Steve later attended Berklee College of Music in Boston where he continued his study of jazz. After recording and performing with top Boston jazz musicians such as Randy Roos and Tiger Okoshi, and leading his own jazz fusion band, Steve spent the next ten years on the road with several renowned jazz artists such as Billy Cobham, Stanley Clarke, Angela Bofill, Tom Brown, and Allan Holdsworth. Steve's international touring took him to countries such as Japan, Israel, Austria, France, England, Italy, Sweden, Argentina, and Australia, as well as major cities in the US and Canada. During this time, Steve also served as musical director for the famous touring Jazz Explosion where he led the trio which headlined artists Freddy Hubbard, Gato Barbaira, Stanley Turentine, Ramsey Lewis, violinist Noel Pointer, Kenny G, and the late Phillis Hyman. The Jazz Explosion performed in major concert venues including the Circle Star in San Francisco, Beacon Theater in New York, Universal Theater in Los Angeles, and Hammersmith Odium in London. Steve's desire towards challenging himself is no where more evident than with his long time association with Allan Holdsworth, whose progressive and innovative style has helped Steve to further his own musical development. Holdsworths more recent CD releases including Secrets, Wardencliff Tower, and Hard Hat Area, as well as featuring Steve on keyboards, also include Steves original tunes "Maid Marion," "Joshua," and "Dodgy Boat." While touring with Holdsworth, Steve was featured in the Japanese edition of Keyboard Magazine (July 1991 and March 1993). Other noteworthy recording contributions by Steve include two of Stanley Clarkes CD releases If This Bass Could Only Talk and East River Drive. Steve reached a major milestone, producing his solo jazz CD From Your Heart and Your Soul (BMI). For the promotional release tour of his new CD, Steve organized a quintet including Gregg Bendian, John Lockwood, Ole Mathisen, and Bruce Bartlett.

A Conversation with Dr. John Ratey: Optimizing Brain Health with Exercise

It was a blast talking with Dr. John Ratey. In this conversation, we learn from Dr. Ratey about optimizing brain health with exercise! Did you know that once you start moving, your brain lights up? Walking, running, swimming, bicycling, and movement, in general fires up the brain and helps to improve overall brain health. Exercise causes the brain to create a number of hormones and chemicals including BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor) which promotes brain health and helps to slow the progression of dying brain cells. Neuroplasticity allows the brain to learn new skills and movements via the creation of new neural firing pathways. The more active we are, the healthier our brain will be. Best selling author, John J. Ratey, MD, is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and an internationally recognized expert in Neuropsychiatry. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles, and 11 books published in 17 languages, including the groundbreaking ADD-ADHD “Driven to Distraction” series with Ned Hallowell, MD. With the publication of "Spark-The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain," Dr. Ratey has established himself as one of the world's foremost authorities on the brain-fitness connection. His most recent book, “Go Wild” explores how we can achieve optimal physical and mental health by getting in touch with our caveman roots, and how we can “re-wild” our lives. Recognized by his peers as one of the Best Doctors in America since 1997, Dr. Ratey was recently honored by the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society as "Outstanding Psychiatrist of the Year" for advancing the field. Dr. Ratey and his work are frequently profiled in the media, where he’s been featured on ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS and NPR, as well as in The New York Times, Newsweek, The Washington Post, US News and World Report, Men’s Health, and other national publications.

A Conversation with Micah Fialka-Feldman: Through the Same Door / Intelligent Lives

I've known Micah Fialka-Feldman for many years and we have become very good friends. I am excited and honored to bring you this conversation with Micah as he shares profound and important views on inclusion for people who live with disabilities. Micah is a self-advocate, teaching assistant, outreach coordinator, national speaker, and pioneer who fights for disability-pride, justice, and inclusion. He is part of the first wave of adults with intellectual disabilities who have attended college and has been fully included in school and community. Micah’s disability advocacy has a foundation in the creation of the “Beloved Community” and the notion that “A community that excludes even one of its members is not a community at all.” Micah earned a certificate in Disability Studies from the Syracuse University School of Education in 2015. Micah currently lives in Syracuse N.Y. where he co-teaches classes in inclusive education and disability studies. He is an outreach coordinator at the Lawrence B. Taishoff Center for Inclusive Higher Education. In May of 2014, Micah was appointed by President Obama to President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities. He is featured in the upcoming documentary by Dan Habib, Intelligent Lives. In 2009, Micah won a landmark federal lawsuit, Fialka-Feldman v. Oakland University Board of Trustees, to live in the dorms at Oakland University. After Micah had been accepted to live in the dorms in 2007, he received notification from the university that he could not live in the dorm because of “university policy.” The administration argued that he was not considered a “degree-seeking” student. Micah sued Oakland University for violating his rights. After over two years of advocacy court proceedings, the Honorable Judge Duggan of the U.S. 6th District Court ruled that Oakland University had denied Micah housing based on “prejudice, stereotypes and/or unfounded fear of persons with disabilities.” Micah moved into the dorms in January of 2010. Dr. Evan Scott Gross: Oral Health & the Athlete

In this video, I'm honored to have as a guest, my good friend (and my own personal dentist), Dr. Evan Scott Gross Watch and learn as he shares very compelling information regarding the importance of good oral health as it pertains to the athlete & active person. Of course, much of this great info applies to ALL of us! In addition, he addresses a multitude of health issues/concerns we should be mindful of, including: * grinding of teeth and how it can lead to TMJ, stress fractures on teeth, broken teeth, and possible flattening edges of the teeth, affecting the ability to chew food . * the importance of wearing a custom made athletic mouth guard (not a stock mouth guard) * the effect of sugary drinks & foods on the teeth (it's WORSE than I ever realized) * every time you sip a sugary drink (or eat a sugary food), there are 20 minutes that the acid level in the mouth goes below 5.5 causing demineralization and tooth decay. * the correlation of poor oral health/hygiene and heart disease! THANK YOU, SCOTT! http://www.sterlinghealthandfitness.com http://www.shf-syr.com
