Fertility Journeys

English, Health / Medicine, 1 season, 31 episodes, 1 day, 4 hours, 18 minutes
About
Infertility is a disease that impacts 1 in 8 couples. 1 in 4 women have experienced a miscarriage. Over 8 million babies have been born worldwide via In vitro fertilization. When these statistics are the most common ones shared in relation to the disease, it is understandable why fertility issues are often only associated only with the ability to carry a child, as opposed to the mental and physical well-being of the woman that can carry beyond the realm of pregnancy. Infertility can impact every aspect of a person’s life, so it is easy to feel overwhelmed, lost or alone. While research has shown that women with infertility have similar levels of stress, anxiety and depression as women with cancer and heart disease, as a medical provider and women’s health expert, I would like to help forge connections and share stories that help demystify diagnosis and support those who often feel unseen. Our mission is to support you on your fertility journey, while optimizing wellness and health using integrative techniques. Integrative medicine takes into consideration all factors that influence health and wellness: the mind, body, spirit and community. It combines alternative and conventional methods to facilitate the body‘s own healing response. You will hear from experts who specialize in mental health, mind-body, nutrition, acupuncture, environmental toxins and more to help educate you on the things that not only will support optimal fertility but achieve optimal wellness for you. While infertility is not uncommon, it can be terribly isolating and lonely because many stories are not told. The podcast also features diverse stories of women who have navigated infertility helping to break the silence and stigma that surrounds infertility.

Dr. Vivian Chen- Optimizing Your Microbiome for Fertility

In this episode of Fertility Journeys, Dr. Shala Salem’s guest is Dr. Vivian Chen, a UK Physician with 15 years of clinical experience. She is board certified in the UK in both internal medicine and family practice.  They explore the importance of supporting your gut microbiome, the health of which is key to promoting optimal overall health, and the evidence emerging that it plays a large role in fertility.  Dr. Chen reveals how your diet, stress, and exposure to toxins can negatively impact your gut health.   Dr. Chen's world turned upside down when her daughter was hospitalized soon after being born with symptoms no doctor could figure out. Through doing her own research, she was able to help her daughter recover. She also realized that the many years of chronic fatigue, acne and brain fog she had was due to environmental toxicity. This opened the world of root causes she had never considered before as a conventional medical doctor.  She now coaches clients back to health virtually by identifying root causes and implementing lifestyle solutions. She is also on a mission to help people reduce their toxin load, one important root cause of many chronic health conditions. On the Truth About Toxins segment, Dr. Shala Salem explains why the health of the microbiome is important for optimal fertility.  She also discusses some of the research of the role of microbiome health in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis.
