Episode 145 | Steven Malcolm

On today's Friday edition, of the Christian Music Guys, we chat with Steven Malcolm! Steven Malcolm makes faith-driven hip-hop that's as unique as his multi-cultural background. It's a sound rooted in rap's rhythmic delivery, pop's modern melodies, and God's word, glued together by an artist whose music has earned five Dove Award nominations and more than 70 million streams. Malcolm is a dynamic storyteller that incorporates a broad range of creative influences into his music. He doubles down on his talents with his most reflective album to date, Tree. All 16-tracks explore Malcolm’s spiritual depth and versatility as a hip-hop artist. Each song reverberates like Sunday-morning spirituals filled with Saturday-evening energy. His powerful messages are reinforced with potent production by Grammy-winning heavyweights BoogzDaBeast (Kanye West), Social House (MGK), and FNZ (A$AP Rocky).  Malcolm's messages of hope and redemption come from his own experience. Raised in western Michigan and coastal Florida, he grew up in search of stability. His father, a native Jamaican who had emigrated from Montego Bay, was deported back to the Caribbean when Steven was just 9 years old, and later passed away before the two could reunite. Steven's mother struggled as a single parent and eventually left town, leaving her son to fend for himself as a young college student. His life lacked a clear direction until he accepted a friend's invitation to attend a local church service that incorporated hip-hop, dance, and worship. An acronym for “Based On A True Story,” BOATS is poised to transport listeners to a utopia of Malcolm’s own creation. “BOATS will take listeners on a journey to Away — an oasis built for the chosen and run by the redeemed,” he shares of the concept behind the record. “Imagine a place where you become what it is you long to become. Imagine a place where your gift makes a way. Imagine a place where its beauty reflects the ones who protect it and its foundation is held together by the stories of the broken. Welcome to Away.” B.O.A.T.S. is out today! @stevenmalcolmmusic @christianmusicguys --- Send in a voice message:

Episode 142 | Ernie Haase

On today's episode, we chat with Ernie Haase! Ernie and Lisa make their home in Stow, Ohio, the foundation for StowTown Records. Ernie started his legendary quartet (EHSS) in 2003. Then, in 2011, he helped begin this specialty Southern Gospel record label along with good friend and fellow co-founder Wayne Haun. The Newburgh, IN, native grew up enjoying the sounds of Gospel music and, more specifically, quartet music. His favorite quartet was the legendary Cathedrals. "I remember going to hear them sing anytime they were near my hometown. When I was a teenager, I would always show up early, sometimes even before they did, and help them unload their bus. It was my dream to sing with them one day." That dream became a reality in 1990, when Ernie received the call to join his favorite quartet. At the time Ernie, who had previously sung with renown songwriter Squire Parsons in his quartet, Redeemed, was doing solo concerts and traveling in his car wherever he was invited to sing. On one particular night in the spring of 1990, Ernie was invited to sing at his alma mater, Oakland City University. Also scheduled at the concert was the Cathedrals. Little did Ernie know that his performance that evening would serve as his unofficial audition for the legendary quartet. The Cathedrals' bass singer, George Younce, was waiting in the wings, backstage, watching and listening to Haase's performance. Obviously, George liked what he heard and saw because, within a week, Ernie was making his way to meet the group for his first performance as the Cathedrals' tenor. Shortly thereafter, Ernie had the opportunity to meet the entire Younce family. Ernie's attention was quickly captured by George's daughter, Lisa, and following a whirlwind courtship, the two married in December of 1990. Lisa helps Ernie in the Signature Sound office, handling the business affairs of the quartet, and when the two aren't busy working, they enjoy reading, biking and simply spending time together. In his spare time, Ernie enjoys playing basketball, collecting vintage albums of some of the great Gospel quartets and other Southern Gospel artists, and he has a huge collection of many classic recordings along with a wide variety of Elvis Presley memorabilia. Signature Sound's latest single, 'We are the Church', is out now! Each Friday Ernie and the guys offer new music, on their Youtube channel, and conversion and information about all the good things they have planned for you the listener. After a decade with Elevation Worship, Brock released his debut, Greater Things, which garnered him a radio hit with the title-cut. The five-track Covered EP followed the next year, and 2020’s SPACE cemented Brock as a bonafide solo artist. His newest single, the anthemic “Just Like You’ve Always Done,” which is his first for Centricity Music, was co-written with Hank Bentley and Jessie Early. The song boasts of the consistency of God yesterday, today and forever. “It’s the launching pad of what we believe,” Brock says of the fresh track. “He is the same as He’s always been. He’s the same God that’s the lead character in all the stories we’ve read in Scripture. He’s still working miracles.” The strength of Brock’s new music rides on the hope he finds in the unfolding story his family is living. The South Carolina native and his wife, Meredith, who currently serves as the CEO of Proverbs 31 Ministries, have three children. From the unexpected joy discovered in foster parenting to leaving the known to pursue the unknown, Brock writes songs to remind his own heart and encourage others that there’s an all-knowing God who is sovereign over it all and is worthy of all our praise. “With my music, I’m just trying to relive all the times God has shown up,” he says. “I want to use that as a catalyst to build my faith and, hopefully, encourage others in their faith for the future as well.” @mackbrock @christianmusicguys --- Send in a voice message:

Episode 134 | Justin Gambino | Friday Edition

On today's episode, we chat with Justin Gambino! Since 2015, acclaimed Texas-based singer/songwriter Justin Gambino has been developing an enthusiastic following across the United States and around the world with his charismatic live performances and hope-filled anthems. With an EP, a full-length recording, and numerous cinematic music videos to his credit, Gambino’s signature songs include “Your Hands & Feet,” “Anchored” and “Going Under.” He’s performed at festivals, churches, camps and other venues, opening for such genre leaders as TobyMac, for KING + COUNTRY, Crowder, Casting Crowns, Skillet and Switchfoot. Gambino’s testimony is a consistent theme in his music and ministry. A rebellious teen, he was arrested for theft at the age of 18. Opting for military enlistment and community service in lieu of incarceration, he spent eight years in the US Navy. While serving in Iraq, Gambino was asked to lead worship on base, rekindling a love for music he first embraced as a child. Battling PTSD and anger issues following his military service, Gambino turned to alcohol and spiraled into depression and despair. One night, on the floor of his apartment, he cried out to God for help and a new journey of redemption, hope and purpose began. Coming full circle, Gambino now holds the Brazoria County Revival each year on the steps of the Texas courthouse where he was sentenced as a teen. Made New, the second full-length studio recording from acclaimed singer/songwriter Justin Gambino, is now available everywhere. Tracing his prodigal years and the abounding grace and mercy Gambino embraced when he finally returned to the Father, Made New was produced by Nashville-based session player and producer Walter Halliwell.  --- Send in a voice message:

Episode 132 | Grace Graber | Friday Edition

On today's Friday edition, we chat with Grace Graber! In many ways, Grace Graber is the voice of a rising movement full of people who believe that maybe both faith and mental health matter — in fact, maybe they’re inextricably intertwined.   With a pop-punk sound in the playful yet heartfelt tradition of Avril Lavigne, Grace’s musical message runs in tandem with her viral social media presence. Her candid conversations about mental health, music, and her faith resonate with followers who immediately feel a kinship with her genuine heart. Part of that authenticity stems from the fact that Grace Graber has lived a journey very similar to her listeners.   “This ministry, the rest of my music, none of this is about me,” Grace is quick to say. “It’s about what God wants to do in His people, specifically through mental health. That’s an epidemic right now. We need to be talking about it more. I’m not doing music for me, to get on radio, to get signed. I’m doing music to save lives.”   Not too long ago, Grace Graber was a suicidal teenager struggling with PTSD from severe bullying. Music gave her the ability to survive— specifically, a Hawk Nelson song that met her where she was. In a glorious full-circle moment, Hawk Nelson’s founding vocalist Jason Dunn would later feature on Grace’s song “This One’s For You,” a track from the Conversations EP that was written for anyone in a place like the one she walked through.   “I feel like God opened more doors to healing,” Grace reflects. “It was like opening up a wound and forcing myself to feel some trauma that I didn't realize I could still feel. Now that I have a therapist and a team, now that I’ve done this collaboration and I'm in a healthy place, I'm able to find resolution to it all for my teenage self, who is content and happy and feels valued.”   Songs like “The Light” and “Do It For Me” speak to some of that possibility of healing, with Grace being fixed on the core message: “if God can do it for me, He can do it for anybody.”   Her latest single, 'Superficiality' is out now! @gracegrabermusic @christianmusicguys --- Send in a voice message:

Episode 131 | Fellowship Creative

On today's episode, we chat with Derric from Fellowship Creative! Fellowship Creative is a band who wants to help you know Jesus. While most Christian artists begin at their church and then move on, Fellowship Creative is still serving every Sunday at their home church, Fellowship Church. It is there that they reflect the heart of their Pastor, Ed Young, to creatively and passionately introduce people to Jesus. These stories of life change continue to inspire the music of Fellowship Creative. Their most recent project, “Til The Day I Die,” comes from a chapter of grief and loss over the tragic death of friend, family, and team member, LeeBeth Young, the oldest daughter of Ed & Lisa Young. Her death opened up a chapter of asking God tough questions and really working out what it means to trust Jesus. The church was where they processed their pain, and this experience inspired these songs of honest vulnerability, deep introspection, and a renewed level of faith.  Every song and artist has a message they want to share. For Fellowship Creative, its simple - Jesus is the hope of the world. And they’ll be writing songs, serving in their church, and spreading that message ‘til the day they die. Their latest album, 'The Help Project", is out now! @fellowshipcreative @christianmusicguys --- Send in a voice message:

Episode 109 | Big Announcement Episode!!

On today's edition of the Christian Music Guys, we talk about our big announcement! We will be at Ichthus Festival 2023! Beginning in 1970, following the historic Asbury Revivals, Ichthus became known as one of the nation’s longest-running Christian music events. Taking its name from ichthys, the fish symbol used by early Christians, Ichthus carried out a mission to be an alternative to secular events like Woodstock and was designed to reach high school and college students.    In 2013 the Ichthus grounds in Wilmore Ky. were purchased by Joe and Cheryl Lycan, who renamed the property “Servant Heart Farm”. The couple is dedicated to bringing the Ichthus experience back home to the farm.    With new ownership and a new vision for ministry, through a partnership with a small group of volunteers and local contributors, Ichthus was relaunched in 2021. We can’t wait for you to join us in 2023 at Servant Heart Farm (the “Ichthus Farm”) as we Take it Back to the Cross. @ichthusmusicfest @christianmusicguys --- Support this podcast:

Episode 108 | Blessing Offor

On today's episode, we chat with Blessing Offor! Blessing Offor speaks to relatable experiences of struggle, triumph, life, and love from a distinctive perspective as a Nigerian-born, Connecticut-raised, and Nashville-based singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. Exhibiting virtuosic piano ability, honest songwriting, and a showstopping voice, his musical fluency and creative foresight are unmatched only made more inspiring by his journey. With five older siblings, Blessing left Nigeria at just six years old to live with his uncle in Connecticut. Glaucoma left him blind in one eye, and Mom and Dad felt he might find better medical care in the United States. He lost sight in the other eye at ten years old due to a water gun accident. Nevertheless, Blessing dove into music. He devoured classics by Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Commodores, and Barry White. He was even allowed to listen to Eminem under one condition – “If I said any of the words, my uncle would take it away,” he laughs. From a young age, Blessing had the natural ability to learn music by ear, developing incredible skill while quickly building his musical index. “Seeing things differently—no pun intended—helps me elucidate concepts in ways people aren’t used to,” he notes. “Everybody has a different filter and a place they come from. My place was, ‘Oh man, my vision is terrible.’ It was frustrating early on, but it trained my ear.” Now, this international upbringing, unbelievable journey, quiet grind, and confluence of styles define his 2023 debut full-length album, My Tribe, that brings together soul, pop, R&B, and African styles in service of a universal sound—which he fittingly dubs “the genre of humanity.” “All of the elements on this record come together to make one whole human,” he observes. “We all have a little bit of spirituality, a little bit of pain, and a little bit of joy. These lyrics are my words from my life. Musically, there’s a lot of who I am! Last but not least, I wasn’t afraid to be honest. There are some heartbreak songs, and there are some more ambiguous songs. This is music for the world. This is music for every universal feeling we have regardless of who we are. Ultimately, I tried to make a life record.” --- Support this podcast:

Ben grew up in Southern Vermont on his family dairy farm working alongside his father. He'd pass the time by singing to old classic country tunes as he witnessed first-hand the hard work and dedication it took to run a farm. The songs never stopped and somewhere between the farm and college, he picked up a guitar and never looked back. Due to generations of hurt in his family, Ben struggled with certain aspects of growing up and turned to cocaine and alcohol at a young age. In 2015, Ben got involved in a devastating drug-fueled relationship which led him to understand better, the other side of addiction. In addition, come 2017, he abruptly lost his best friend to a heroin overdose and his entire outlook on life shifted. Motivated to change, he moved to Nashville to pursue a career as a country singer in late 2018. A family Ben was close with invited him to church one Sunday and as he walked the halls into the auditorium filled with 3,000 people, he knew one day he would sing "that kind of music" for the rest of his life. Falling face first into his new-found relationship with Jesus, he began writing with a burning desire to share what God did to turn his life around. Today, Ben lives completely sober, while sharing his story filled with hope, mercy and grace. By turning his testimony into songs, he has been rejuvenated with a new passion and mission; to share his story with the world and all who are ready to listen. @bendfuller @christianmusicguys --- Support this podcast:

I believe He did this out of kindness and jealousy for my wholeness, to settle a lot of questions and doubts I've lived with for many years.”  “For the first time ever, I've become rooted and established in my beloved identity,” he adds. “The Holy Spirit has begun to peel off layers of insecurity and fear of rejection. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says we are ‘the righteousness of God,’ and Galatians 2:20 says we 'have been crucified with Christ’ and that everything connected with the old flesh has died. This revelation has pierced my heart and brought me tremendous freedom and a passion for helping others see Jesus through the same lens.” ABLE is also highlighted by the title-cut and debut single, a soul-stirring testimony of God’s faithfulness written by Stevenson, Blake NeeSmith and Jeff Pardo. Episode 73 | Jason Earls | Kids Beach Club

On today's episode, we chat with Jason Earls, who is a part of Kids Beach Club!  KBC Founder Jack Terrell had been in full-time Christian children’s ministry for over twenty years when he felt God tug his heart to launch something unique at his church. Jack created a groundbreaking ministry called Treasure Island using a fun “beach” theme packed with lively songs, adventure-themed messages, group teaching, and smaller one-on-one interactions between the children and volunteers. Jack dreamed of impacting even more children outside his church walls as the program thrived. Thanks to the Supreme Court ruling Good News Club v. Milford Middle School (2001), he knew schools could not exclude Bible clubs from meeting on school grounds. So, he set out to create a fun, after-school experience oriented around the Bible, partnering with volunteers from local churches to make Jesus cool in school. And thus KiDs Beach Club® was born. They've also expanded into KiDs Beach Club® TV, a television show that emphasizes character development for kids that is broadcasted and streamed around the globe. @kidsbeachclub @jasonearls @christianmusicguys --- Support this podcast:

I loved stewarding other’s songs, but I knew I was not honoring the full gift He put inside of me.” With the current release of “For All My Life,” the lead single from her long-awaited self-titled solo debut album, God is continuing to provide TAYA with opportunities to share her talent with a worldwide audience.  You can catch Taya on the Singalong tour, with Matt Maher, Leeland, and Phil Wickham!  You'll hear stories behind some of her songs from her album, and hear how she got her start and so much more! @TAYA @christianmusicguys --- Support this podcast:
