CCU 89 – S3 E21 – Cause And Effect

The Flash, Season 3, Episode 21: Cause and Effect Barry-Go-Round Much like Iris and Joe, holy jeez did I love the return of happy-go-lucky, plucky Barry Allen. Perhaps I hadn’t noticed it consciously, but I’ve certainly been aware of a dark cloud hovering over this show. If I wanted non-stop gloom, I’d watch Arrow. Read more... Sure, many of us called this unmasking, but it's still damn satisfying to see it actually happen. Turns out there was no comma in "I am the future Flash." The Flash, Season 3, Episode 19: The Once and Future Flash Some thoughts from Joe: HR Gives Us the Jitters Welcome back, all! After a long, long month, the Flash is back with a bang! Villainous pals, surprise revelations, and...oh look!...time travel! Man, if they keep this up, I'll actually forget what year the show is supposed to take place in! CCU 85 – S3 E17 – Duet

Some thoughts from Joe on The Flash, Season 3, Episode 17: Duet A Song in Your Heart And so, I make a confession. One I rarely admit to, but is true all the same. My first two years in college, I was in the...musical theatre department. It's true. There's a reason I keep bursting into songs in these podcasts. I'm an old song-n-dance man. Sometimes you go to Planet of the Apes. Sometimes Planet of the Apes comes to you. I imagine it'll come as no surprise when I say how much I dug this episode. Of Grodd, Barry said "He's evolving." Dang right he is. More than any episode to date, we're finally seeing Grodd go from being a sympathetic, tortured beast to a ruthless conqueror. Conqueror Grodd is my favorite Grodd, the Grodd of the comics, who looks down on humans as moronic neanderthals in no way equal to his mighty Apeness. Read more... We look up to our Superheroes. We expect them to always be there. We expect them to always make the right decision. Check out what co-host Joe had to say about Fast Lane: The Wild West One of the things I really give this show a lot of credit for is the writer's abilities to take what we know of the comics and turn it on its head. Zolomania! This was the episode I'd been waiting all season for, on a lot of levels. I admit that while I do (and likely always will) love this show from the bottom of my nerdy heart, I've had several moments of "hrm?" this season. Those who listen regularly know of my issues w/ this incarnation of Jay Garrick. Some of Barry's behavior has felt very out-of-character to me too. And I remain unsold on the Jay-Caitlin romance (which I'm calling Jaytlin.) Why do I criticize? Lots of reasons, but mostly 'cause I love. The writing on this show is so regularly solid that I'm afraid it makes the less-solid moments stand out all the more. Then, Tuesday 1/26 happened. Read more... Join us as we talk through the high points and the low points of this episode, and check out the great listener theories and feedback! From Joe: 'Tis the Mid-Season I grew up in the 80s. Don't let my boyish good looks fool you. Christmas was perhaps an extra fun thing in the 80s, because it was the era of toys. TOYS TOYS TOYS. Movies were geared towards selling them. Hell, even some TV shows were! Those who own the old Buck Rogers or Battlestar Galactica toys know of what I speak. Transformers, He-Man, GI Joe, Star Wars, and yes, our beloved super-heroes all had their likeness formed in molded plastic. Read more... CCU 52 – S2 E8 – Legends of Today

What a great crossover event between Flash and Arrow! To celebrate, we did a crossover PODCAST event! This week, it's CCU and Arrow Squad, Together Again For The First Time Since The Last Time! Join us for the LONGEST podcast in CCU History, as two teams of hosts dissect two hours worth of two teams of superheroes! Not only did Legends of Today and Legends of Yesterday set up Legends of Tomorrow for the January premiere, but it moved Flash and Arrow toward their mid-season finales, and it set up a nice bit of mystery surrounding a certain Speed Enhancing Drug that you just KNOW is going to come into play soon! Plus, this week, we got the introduction to one of DC's biggest villains, Vandal Savage! And now, here to tell you more about that, is Joe "Joey Shakespeare" Zettelmaier: Vandalous And so the two-parter has happened! Unlike our last few, this was less of two semi-connected tales and a true long story broken up over two days. We've seen more heroes onscreen than in anything short of animation. But what are heroes without a great villain, and man, did we get a great one. Read more... CCU 51 – S2 E7 – GORILLA WARFARE

Putting the "Great" in "Great Ape" I sometimes think back to 15, 10, heck, even 5 years ago. When I thought about that on Wednesday, what I thought was "no way could they have made Grodd work back then." Sure, they could've tried in the old 1990 version of the show. They could've begged Stan Winston, and he'd have made one heck of an animatronic mask on top of some huge dude in an ape costume. But it wouldn't be what we saw this week in Gorilla Warfare. CCU 50 – S2 E6 – ENTER ZOOM

Some thoughts from CCU Co-Host Joe: Heroes Die What really struck me regarding this week's episode of The Flash, Enter Zoom, was not just the final ten minutes, but the largely similar reaction the fanbase seems to have with it. "EPIC" "I almost cried" "I'm still too out of breath from the final 10 minutes of this week's episode" "Those last ten minutes scared the BLEEP out of me." And these are just reactions from within our beloved CCU community! I've watched Enter Zoom twice now, and I cannot stop thinking of that final fight. Read more... CCU 49 – S2 E5 – The Darkness And The Light

THE DARKNESS AND THE LIGHT CCU 49 - Season 2 Episode 5 Some thoughts from CCU Co-Host Joe: All's Wells That Ends Wells Oh, Harrison. Harrison, Harrison, Harrison. You have been missed. For me, while I've very much enjoyed Season 2 of the Flash, something has felt...well, a tiny bit off. Just a little something missing. By episode 3, I realized what it was. Good ol' Harry. Sure, we'd seen a brief video clip of Eobard/Wells, and the quick flash of ParaWells, but that wasn't enough. What we were missing were the character interactions. Wells cannot exist in a vacuum. As great as Tom Cavanagh is, and holy cow is he great, he truly shines when interacting with this exceptional cast. Read more... THE FURY OF FIRESTORM CCU 48 - Season 2 Episode 4 Karen and Tony discuss the good, the bad, the ugly, and THE FURY OF FIRESTORM! Joe sends in feedback from another part of the planet, and plenty of listeners share their thoughts too! And a giant walking shark grabs us by the throat. The theme this week of Being Open To New Things was pretty great, and some of our Scooby Gang were open to new things... and some were not! Firestorm certainly went through some changes and, yes, even a little bit of fury! We also got some wonderful stuff with the West family, and some terrific set-up for Legends of Tomorrow AND for the rest of this season of The Flash. And... we got a GIANT WALKING SHARK!!! FAMILY OF ROGUES CCU 47 - Season 2 Episode 3 Your co-host, Joe, discusses Family of Rogues, and shares some history of the Flash family from the comics. (Beware, possible comic-book spoilers below!) All In The Family That gushing sound you heard? That was me gushing about this week's episode of The Flash. "Family of Rogues" dealt with things I love: intense relationship dynamics, in-depth character studies, and of course...The Rogues! Sure, we only saw Capt. Cold and Golden Glider (tho' Heat Wave got a wee mention), but that's ok, because the real focus was on the poor, damaged, tragic Snart Family. Again, The Flash tv show does a wonderful job of honoring a Flash comic story, but still making it its own. (COMIC SPOILERS BELOW) Read more... CCU 46 – S2 E2 – Flash of Two Worlds

Some thoughts on FLASH OF TWO WORLDS, and our CCU Community, from one of your co-hosts, Joe! The Future Is Now! So today, while recording our beloved CCU podcast,Tony and I did something altogether new for us. We live-streamed our session on Blab. I admit to being a bit camera-shy. Despite making a living in theatre, I prefer to lurk in the back of the audience rather than onstage. I often say "I'm like Bigfoot: rarely captured on film." So it was with some trepidation that I agreed to be part of this live event. So we sat down, chatted for a bit, and turned on the camera. Guess what? It was fantastic fun! Tony and I have known each other for many years, so it's easy to be comfortable around him. But what I hadn't really thought about was the running messages from the CCU fans. That's what made it for me. I deeply love being part of this community, and today, it felt like you were there with us. You were insightful, excited, and often hilarious. Read more... CCU 45 – S2 E1 – The Man Who Saved Central City

THE MAN WHO SAVED CENTRAL CITY CCU 45 - S2 E1 Joe Zettelmaier shares some thoughts about the start of Season 2! Back like a (Capt.) Boomerang We're back, baby! I honestly can't recall the last time I was this excited for a show to return. Last week, I got The Flash, Season 1 DVDs (No Blu-Rays in this house!) Over the course of a week, I watched every episode I could whenever I could. As I hoped, when one knows how the season ends, one can catch all the little clues that were leading us there. I admit, I was watching Harrison Wells with a close eye, and suddenly his every line had another layer. And once again, I watched the near-perfectly-assembled story wrap itself up in a way that felt completely organic and emotionally satisfying. And then, I started to guess what was coming next.Read more... CCU 44 – Season 2 Preview

A Whole New World(s) Less than a month. We're less than one month away from the return of the scarlet speedster and his wacky gang of cops and scientists. What does Season 2 hold for us? The sky's the limit, especially because said sky holds a giant inter-dimensional portal. I think it's a safe bet that Earth 2 is going to be a major factor in this next season, as well as the folks from said Earth. We already know that Jay Garrick will be racing over from the other side, and there are some indications that big bad Zoom will be crossing over from there as well. Read more... Until we Flash again... I'm not going to go into depths on the season finale. Chances are, if you're reading this blog, you've seen the episode. And if you haven't, why spoil anything? I think most if not all of us are in agreement that the finale absolutely delivered. Since this will be my last blog til season two, I decided to look back at some favorite moments. Tony and I were asked to take over Central City Underground in the middle of the season. We were thrilled and honored to do so, and fortunately we were both already big fans of the show and hadn't missed an ep. CCU 40 – S1E22 – Rogue Air

The Good,The Bad, And Somebody Lock The Door I admit that while I enjoyed this week's episode (Rouge Air), it didn't wow me the way I wanted it to. To me, it felt like two incomplete episodes jammed into one. But upon second viewing, I began to pick up a thread, a theme, someting. Flash teams up w/ Capt. Cold. Across the nation, you could hear fans all over rolling their eyes. When his inevitable betrayal reared its head, exactly no one was surprised. The Flash did what the Flash does...he trusted, he wanted to see the best, to hope. But he's still very early in his heroic career, and his trust proves ill-placed. Cold exhibits a classic trait of villains; he's in it only for himself, and couldn't care less if his actions hurt others. And hurt others, they do. Out of this, Barry learns a lesson. Read more... CCU 39 – S1E21 – Grodd Lives

All Grodd Things Grodd Lives! Grodd. Grodd. GroddGroddGroddGroddGroddGrodd. This was my thought process while watching Ep. 21 today. I've made no effort to hide the fact that Gorilla Grodd, or just Grodd to his pals, is my favorite Flash villain. Let's explore why, shall we? I'm inclined to say that, with the possible exception of Batman, no one has a better rogues gallery than The Flash. Tech-magicians from the future, a team of villains w/ powers and names so silly they should be laughingstocks (but aren't), even an extra-dimensional despot w/ delusions of Fairy Tale-dom. But then there's Grodd. His origins in the comics (a member of a race of super-apes hidden by their advanced technology deep in Africa) is clearly different then what we've seen on the show, but that's OK. They're making it their own, and keeping true to the universe they've created. Read more... CCU 38 – S1E20 – The Trap

Episode 20 of THE FLASH, The Trap, brought together a whole bunch of the threads the writers have been weaving all season into one amazing tapestry of revelations, questions and jaw-dropping moments. (And a couple of moments that left people scratching their heads! One of your hosts liked the Barry/Iris "spark moment", one didn't - what did YOU think?) Here are some thoughts from Joe about The Flash so far this season: I grew up a child of Marvel Comics. X-Men, Spider-Man, Ghost Rider...these were the comics of my youth. I didn't even start to actively read DC until my early 20s, with Starman (an INCREDIBLE book), which led me to JSA. JSA was eventually taken over by a fellow named Geoff Johns, and that's what led me to the Flash. But my experience with DC comics is dwarfed by Tony's. Read more... In Praise of the Lesser Known Villains So this week, in "All Star Team Up", we got our first, brief, and hopefully not last look at a massively-revamped Bug-Eyed Bandit. Compared to Bertram Larvan (shown below), Emily Kinney was a welcome sight, even if she was only there for a few minutes. CCU 31 – S1E13 – The Nuclear Man

A SOURCE IS A SOURCE One of the things Tony and I discuss in this week's CCU podcast is The Flash's willingness to adhere to the source material...so long as it suits them. It's a tricky road to walk (run?), but the writing team has learned to navigate it masterfully. For several years in the early 2000s, I dove into the Flash comics like they were a refreshing pool and I was on fire. Geoff Johns focused on the men behind the masks. The Flash was ancillary to Wally West, a mechanic w/ Keystone City's police force. He loved hockey, his wife, and his city. Captain Cold would set down his cold gun, remove his parka, and become Leonard Snart...a coffee-drinking weisenheimer with a fierce, if unique, moral code and equally fierce loyalty to his friends. He also loved hockey. Read more... The post CCU 31 – S1E13 – The Nuclear Man appeared first on Golden Spiral Media- Entertainment Podcasts, Technology Podcasts & More.

CCU 22 – S1E7 – Kickin It Up A Notch

What's better than an episode of The Flash with one villain? Try TWO villains! Two very distinct stories are going on in the seventh episode of The Flash entitled "Power Outage" and as Barry and Wells try to juggle the attack from without by Blackout, Iris, Joe and Eddie must handle the attack from within by The Clock King. The Shadow was pretty disappointed by the use of this villain in the context of this episode, based on the brilliant storyline we got from Arrow's season 2 episode "Time of Death", but there was more to make this story enjoyable. There were a lot of Harrison Wells reveals in this episode and fans (and hosts) are pretty evenly divided over who Wells is in the broader Flash universe. Is he from the future, or can he only see into the future? Did he create The Flash, or is he just eager to take credit? And what theory of time-travel is the show conforming to? We address all of these questions, but probably don't provide concrete answers because every time we think we know more, the showrunners throw something else at us! Keeps us coming back, right? CCU 20 – S1E6 – Hurt Your Hand?

Have you ever punched someone and have them respond by saying: "Hurt your hand?" Yeah, that's definitely where my mind went this week! Barry Allen got his butt handed to him a couple times by his childhood nemesis Tony "Girder" Woodward in The Flash's 7th episode of season 1 entitled "The Flash Is Born". Both The Shadow and I found this episode to be a huge improvement over last week's installment and much more in line with what we're already starting to expect from the show runners at The Flash. We cover a lot in this episode... We talk about Harrison Wells and who he might actually be in comic book lore, or who he might not be. Martin aka The Flash called in with a theory about Eddie Thawne and is sticking to his guns about the man actually being Reverse Flash (which I, Miss Ice, happen to agree with). CCU16 – S1E4 – Absolute Zero

Brr! It's cold in here! I was hoping it wasn't just me feeling the chill this week. I can take a bit more of the icy weather than most, but this week it was downright chilling! How fantastic was it to have Wentworth Miller as Captain Cold on season 1 episode 4 of The Flash? The puns were in rapid-fire mode as not only the episode title is indicative of the band of super villains yet to come, but also the allusions to "heat" and "cold" welcome Miller and former co-star of Prison Break Dominic Purcell into the fold. The Shadow and I, Miss Ice, try to break down this phenomenal episode as best we can! There's a lot to cover, from Cisco creating the cold gun that brings about the events of the episode to the repercussions of that creation as it pertains to Barry, to Felicity's (breathtaking) presence in Central City. Opposites attract, kind of like heat and cold, hmm? But unfortunately, Felicity and Barry are both smoakin' and a relationship between them just seems pointless. Read more... CCU 14 – S1E3 – Fire and Ice

Thank you for catching this transmission of Central City Underground! We apologize to The Rising Tide for hijacking over their hijack, but some things just can't be helped. We had a really good purpose for doing so, though! There was a new episode of The Flash on The CW this Tuesday, and Mr. The Shadow and Miss Ice (that's me) really needed to talk about it. From flashbacks to the night of the particle accelerator explosion to more subtle hints about Harrison Wells' origin, this episode was packed with superhero-origin goodness. (Raise your hand if you were thinking Smoke Monster when The Mist transformed. Eh?) Kyle Nimbus, a.k.a. The Mist, becomes the first of potentially MANY villains to be locked away in the particle accelerator at S.T.A.R. Labs. Hmm. How do we feel about this? Read more... CCU 12 – S1E2 – Multiplexity

In episode 12 of Central City Underground, we dive into discussions about the second episode of season 1 entitled "Fastest Man Alive." The Red Streak has been lighting up Central City and there are a couple people who aren't quite on board with this plan yet, Dr. Snow and Detective West. As much as this episode is a story of Barry Allen adjusting to and learning about his new powers, it is also an exploration into how those around him process it as well. Read more... CCU 10 – S1E1 – Zero to Hero

In this first transmission of season 1 of The Flash, Miss Ice and The Shadow waste no time in getting down to business. Almost immediately, several questions and Easter eggs are laid down for the future of this show. Barry's mother was murdered when he was 11 and his father was arrested immediately and convicted for her murder. Now in Iron Heights for 14 years, Barry is still determined to uncover the truth, being the only one who believes in his father's innocence. He is adamant that there was someone else in the living room with him and his father that fateful morning, a ball of light. Or...were there two balls of light? The Shadow and Miss Ice are pretty certain they see two distinct blurs, one yellow and one red, very reminiscent of Flashpoint Paradox. And yet, Barry tells the gang at S.T.A.R. Labs that he saw a man inside the light (singular man). The Shadow lays down a great theory that we might wait the whole season, if not multiple seasons, to uncover in its entirety. What is your theory? Who are the two balls of light and why did their presence end with the death of Nora Allen? Read more... CCU 08 – Chatting with Chad Rook

In this very special edition of Central City Underground, we had the pleasure of chatting with Chad Rook who is set to guest star in the pilot episode of The Flash (airing October 8, by the way). Chad will be portraying Clyde Mardon, aka Weather Wizard, and he has a lot of fantastic things to say not only about the show itself and the creative team involved in making it happen, but also about the comic universe and how he came to undertake the role of Barry Allen's first villainy foe. Chad has a number of projects going on right now, and a lot more in the pipeline. When his acting career didn't take off at the velocity he would have preferred, he began creating his own characters and directing his own projects. To learn more about these projects, we encourage you to visit his website and follow him on Twitter. Chad loves keeping up with fans and is as excited for the show to begin as we are! Read more... CCU 07 – Flash: Season Zero

Freshly back from the island, Miss Ice rejoins The Shadow in their underground lair with a new transmission! In this episode of Central City Underground, Miss Ice tells us about her adventures on Oahu and the 2014 fan-organized Lost event, then we jump into some DC Comic universe news (Gotham), but the main purpose of this transmission is to discuss the first two issues of [[[Flash: Season Zero]]]. This comic series is written by Andrew Kreisberg, who has had his hands on every single episode of Arrow and is heavily involved in The Flash, and now with this comic we look at what possible relationship it has to the upcoming TV series, if any at all. CCU 06 – Flashpoint Paradox

In this transmission of Underground Radio, Miss Ice and The Shadow watched the DC Comics animated film entitled [[[Flashpoint Paradox]]], the film that kicked off the New 52 comic series. We start with our initial reactions to the movie, but very quickly dive into discussing the logistics of time travel and the relevant paradoxes that are at play. Our discussion starts off a little timey whimey, but there is an interesting discrepancy that holds our attention for a great deal of the conversation. The movie, at large, was entertaining, but we struggled with seeing how the events actually came about to provoke the events that occur when Barry wakes up at his keyboard in the alternate timeline. Both Barry and Zoom are aware of the previous timeline, while Barry must adjust to the new timeline, it seems as though Zoom is well-immersed. Read more... CCU 05 – FANversations!

Since Miss Ice was released from jail, she's been a bit skittish. She mistook our guest host this week for a lurking villain when all he was trying to do was navigate the complex underground infrastructure of Central City! The Flash joins The Shadow and Miss Ice in the latest transmission of Central City Underground and they have a rockin' good time! As a long time listener of Arrow Squad and a very active member of the Arrow community, it was our pleasure to talk with The Flash about where his interest in the comic book character began, how it evolved, and what draws him in most about the guy. He shares some of the highlights for him about The Flash universe, as well as some things he's hesitant about in the CW's upcoming television show. Read more... This wasn't supposed to happen... I didn't realize I was transmitting. I'm not even sure HOW I transmitted. I never hacked any frequency. I'm not sure who will hear this... if anyone... CCU 03 – Ear to the Ground

Who needs an hour long of commercial free jazz when Central City Underground needs to transmit? We're back with another transmission! In this special edition of Central City Underground we spend a lot of time talking about how a lot of casting news is revealing a broader arc of DC characters and what that possibly means for the show itself. There are six weeks left before the premiere and we already know a good chunk of the heroes and villains set to be introduced! We also hear from two other Underground agents lying low in the area. XForce11 and False Tympanic send in their own transmissions and it is awesome to hear that they each are staying strong in the midst of so much uncertainty. If you've seen or heard about anything unusual happening in your area, please let us know. We want to get the truth out on the airwaves and we can only do that through your help! Read more... CCU 02 – Greg Weisman Interview

In this transmission from Central City Underground, we save you from the dulcet tones of WCCU Radio once again and interject with a fun and enlightening conversation with Greg Weisman of Young Justice. Weisman's credits are deep and wide and we discuss old and current projects alike, including a relatively new medium for him: novels. Read more... CCU 01 – Flash Forward

The rogue agents of truth are back! We, Shadow and Miss Ice, were able to successfully complete a second transmission and have it here, recorded for you, in case you weren't able to tap into the right frequency when we hijacked the Central City Police Department's dispatch radio. In case it was unclear from their first transmission, this is a podcast dedicated to the upcoming television show The Flash on The CW, kicking off Tuesday October 7, 2014 at 8/7C. In this episode of Central City Underground, we talk explain what exactly it is we are trying to do with the underground theme, in case it needs explanation, AND get the first encoded message from the first (of hopefully many!) freaked out citizens wondering who in the world they can trust. Are you like False Tympanic, wondering who to trust? We have a couple suggestions. Read more...
