World-renowned psychologist and best selling author Elissa Epel on embracing stress and transforming it. Stress is a part of life. It’s ubiquitous. It is the ocean we swim in. We can’t avoid it. But we can learn to live well with it. Humans have a stress response for a reason. It prepares our mind and body for what we need to do in the moment and in the moments ahead. Even our negative thoughts can trigger our bodies stress response, so we rarely experience periods of ease and deep restoration. Humans are exquisitely built to handle stress. In fact we need it. And in the right dosage and frequency, it helps keep our cells young and vital. SUPPORT THE SHOW, SHOW YOUR LOVE Become a patron on

Why Your Happiness Matters with Ericka Souter
Parenting is hard. But being a parent doesn’t mean you have to stifle your most basic wants and needs. It doesn’t mean it has to consume you to the degree of self-sacrifice and martyrdom and you definitely don’t need to lose yourself to be a good parent. Ericka Souter, author of How to Have a Baby and a Life on why being good for our kids has to become synonymous with being good to ourselves. If you are not happy, your children know it, moreover children suffer if the people taking care of them are not taking care of themselves. Mothers who feel depressed are more likely to have children who act out or have other behavioral problems. Researchers say that a mom’s satisfaction with her life is more important to a child’s social and emotional skills than how much money she has, the amount of time she spends with them, or whether she

Ask yourself, what am I feeling right now that I don’t want to feel? And is that a problem? Often we look outside ourselves either for problems or solutions. Couples blame one another-you should change so that I won’t feel disturbed. By placing the cause of our disturbance outside of ourselves they miss the opportunity to develop a capacity to deal with our own disturbance. What is our tendency? We avoid feeling discomfort. We get wrapped up in stories and interpretations. Our normal way of operating is to relate to our embodied sensation from the perspective of our interpretations. According to my guest-<a href=

Hard Truth About Parenting the Conscious Way
In our performance, achievement, good grades and behavior oriented culture, we get stuck in unhelpful, old and deeply entrenched patterns. We repeat what we don’t heal. It takes courage, willingness, commitment and hard work (and a whole lot of self-compassion) to parent differently than our parents. It’s all about deepening our awareness on a daily basis, learning new skills and adapting a process oriented mindset as opposed to result oriented. That's the path to growth and positive change. And change doesn't happen overnight. If you are like most of us then probably you sometimes question whether or not you're doing a good job as a parent. What we share might surprise you. "How to respond to my 6 yr old's frequent, explosive (& sometimes violent) tantrums - he has several a day over minor frustrations and not getting his way (even in response to long-established rules like no snacks in the hour before dinner)." I pulled common threads: kids not listening = not cooperating kids having tantrums

3 Steps to Effective Limit Setting
In today's episode I'm helping Adriana, a mom of 2 kids, ages 2 and 4 years old with limit setting. I demystify the limit setting process and ask Adriana to get clear on her why behind saying "no". Setting limits doesn’t have to be unpleasant. You don’t have to be harsh or angry. It’s all about knowing your why, staying calm and present, communicating the limit with compassion and holding that limit knowing that kids will have emotional reactions. You don’t have to feel guilty or even give in. In fact I suggest using playfulness and humor as strategy. I've created a special playlist on Spotify with all the On-Air-Coaching Episodes of 2019 for easy consumption. <a href= "https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5Z2KbaIGKNW4HTWPmNps4M?si=1knem-D6SQWOgMKDhxUE8g&fbclid=IwAR2dEXkxKzka9Y1LSiBWJL0S0dZNTDomqS7Ook8c

How To Break Free of the Drama Triangle and Victim Consciousness
Barry Weinhold, Ph.D talks about the Drama Triangle. The drama triangle is a dynamic model of social interaction. It was developed by Dr. Karpman when he was a student of Eric Berne, M.D. father of transactional analysis. Karpman and other clinicians point out that “victim, rescuer, and persecutor” refer to roles people unconsciously play, or try to manipulate other people to play, The triangle maps a type of destructive interaction that can occur between people in conflict. The Unspoken Truth About The Plight of Modern Motherhood
What you are about to hear is an unexpected conversation that started out as an on air coaching call. Katie, the mother of 4 children from Australia had signed up to be coached on air a while ago. She has been one of my faithful listeners. I reached out and as she began speaking I soon realized that this not a coaching episode, that I need to hold space for her to share her story. Because it reminded me of the other stories I hear. Women are struggling. They feel overwhelmed, alone, isolated, drained, needing of emotional support, even those in “happy” marriages. The emotional load of motherhood is taking a toll on their mental health, well-being, relationships and parenting. The invisible workload of being a mother is killing women. Domestic Violence and Abuse with Mickie Zada
Mickie Zada chose to stay in a damaging relationship for 34 years because she thought it was her Calling. She believed it was her responsibility to keep her husband between the lines. While living in abuse, for decades she didn’t recognize herself as an abused spouse. She was not threatened with weapons, was not hospitalized, never called law enforcement and did not file a restraining order against her husband. She was the strong one, the grounded one, the dedicated wife. She was in love. When she left, she wondered (like nearly every abuse survivor) whether she was really abused. So many years were invested in protecting her abuser that she felt guilty defending herself by leaving. Are We Over-Parenting in America?
I recently visited Armenia with my family for the first after 12 years. Even though I was born there and know pretty much what the culture is but to my surprise things had changed. This visit was special because I was visiting as a parent and parent educator and I was very intentional to observe how the Armenian people do the parenting business. Also, I met my friends there for the first time as parents with families. For this episode I invited my dear friend Lusine to join me via Skype to discuss parenting differences and similarities between the Armenia and America. Lusine is a mother of an almost 10 years old boy. Lusine has noted that the issues are the same regardless of the geographical location. What surprised me about Lusine and most parents I talked to there, is that they have never even read a single parenting book. And this is why I pose a question: are we over-parenting here in America?
