Tuesday, July 23, 2024 Part 2

Part #2: Host Neville James is joined by Louis "Lolo" Willis to reminisce on the loss of Ronald Alexander "Ronche" Charles, the brilliant basketball player who helped Magic Johnson win the NCAA college basketball national championship with Michigan State University in 1979. Charles died on Monday at the age of 65. At the Government House weekly press conference, Governor Albert Bryan, Jr., announced the death of Ron Charles, a St. Croix native. The gymnasium of Central High School in St. Croix is named after Ron Charles. Charles was born in St. Croix and has played professionally for several clubs, including the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association. Charles, a 6'7" forward/center, played collegiate basketball for MSU from 1976 to 1980. Throughout his sophomore and junior years, Charles helped the Spartans win back-to-back Big Ten championships, led by future Hall of Famer Magic Johnson. He spent several years playing professionally with the Chicago Bulls, with stops in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), Spain, Portugal, Italy, and France. He returned to the United States in 1989, settling in Atlanta.

For a location that has helped pave the way for the Caribbean's recovery from the pandemic, it's no surprise that the US Virgin Islands is at the vanguard of another innovation: a new Caribbean tourism conference. The inaugural US Virgin Islands Tourism Summit will take place next week in St. Thomas, with several panels and speeches discussing the current situation of tourism in the territory. The event, which will be held on July 25, seeks to "serve as an annual forum to spotlight the tourism industry in the US Virgin Islands and throughout the Caribbean," The United States Virgin Islands Department of Tourism is hosting the event. Speakers will include US Virgin Islands Governor Albert Bryan Jr., USVI Tourism Commissioner Joseph Boschulte, Black Travel Alliance President Martinique Lewis, and Brittany McCallum, VP of Basketball Marketing at KLUTCH Sports Group, among others.

Small-town contributors are rallying around Kamala Harris. Act Blue, the major Democratic fundraising platform, has announced that Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential campaign has officially begun, following President Biden's announcement on Sunday that he was pulling out of the race and endorsing her as his successor. According to a campaign official, Harris raised $49.6 million in grassroots donations within hours of Biden's endorsement.

Mike Canton is the long-time host and producer of The Soul Show. The African American Public Radio Consortium distributes this show nationally and abroad. The show is a musical voyage through history and diverse styles of soul music. In 1995, Stephen Chatman and Don Patterson launched The Soul Show on WYEP-FM, Pittsburgh's longest-running adult alternative station. Canton co-hosted alongside Chatman in 2006 before becoming the solo host in 2009 and continues to do so now.

Part #1: Greg Guanell, Director of the Green Caribbean Technology Center at UVI, joins host Neville James. The United States Virgin Islands has seen extraordinary growth in its alternative energy sector. As a result, the Caribbean Green Technology Center and the University of the Virgin Islands Albert A. Sheen campus recognized the importance of meeting these needs by developing a two-year Associates program that teaches students the theory, application, and fundamentals of renewable technology to prepare them for employment. UVI will begin offering the Associates program in the Fall. Neville James speaks with Zak Zouk, the founder of 81C, and Curator Joseph Hewes to present a new solo fine art exhibition that opens Saturday in ancient Charlotte Amalie. Flexingx - La Puerta Borrosa by Nel Figueroa, a Ponce-based painter. Nel Figueroa houses a notable full-scale painting exhibition, curated and organized for 81C's summer season of art and festivities. Figueroa presents a disruptive and amusing show of works influenced by graffiti, urban street art, and colonial reflections, concluding in a psychedelic homage to Caribbean culture, identity, and inventiveness. The art opening celebration will be held on Saturday July 20th from 5 to 10 p.m. in 81C's main gallery, with artist Nel Figueroa on-site.

The first, addressing managing local projects, problems, and timeframes, featured Education Commissioner Dionne Wells-Hedrington and Public Works Commissioner Derek Gabriel and Schneider Hospital CEO Tina Comissiong. Ronald Picard checks in with Neville from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as a delegate to the Republican National Convention, where Senator J.D. Vance formally accepted the Republican Vice-presidential nomination.

Part 1: Neville James celebrates Rashawn Ross, a trumpeter from St. Thomas whose great musical career began at Ulla Muller Elementary School, is excited to share the moment with his mother at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's annual induction ceremony as a member of the Dave Matthews Band. Ross and his Grammy Award-winning bandmates will join other rock 'n' roll luminaries as honorees for music's greatest accolade during this year's ceremony on October 19 at Cleveland's Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. Ross stated that his mother, Beverly Monsanto, has been there for him every step of the way throughout his musical adventure, beginning when she helped raise funds at band booster gatherings as a child. He mentioned it would be good to have her at his induction ceremony. This year's inductees include Dave Matthews Band and Kool & The Gang.

It began with history-making phenom rookie Paul Skenes pitching a scoreless first inning. Skenes vs. stars like Aaron Judge is the best matchup in any All-Star event, and it's a dream for MLB. Shohei Ohtani broke the scoreless tie in the third inning with a 400-foot three-run bomb, becoming the Dodgers' first All-Star since Mike Piazza in 1996. The AL responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, paced by Juan Soto's two-run double. Jarren Duran hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning, The AL held on for a 5-3 victory. Duran won MVP honors. James chats with Supervisor of Elections Caroline Fawkes, who has released the Early Voting schedule for the 2024 Primary Election. Early voting on St. Thomas and St. Croix will be held from Tuesday, July 16, 2024, to Tuesday, July 23, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. Early voting hours on St. John will be 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., from July 20 to July 23, 2024.

The LIFT program, part of the Summer Youth Work Experience Program (SYWEP), provides eight (8) weeks of work experience to college juniors and seniors. LIFT interns will gain real-world experience while also taking part in special projects, mentorship initiatives, and community service activities. Participants will also be given Life Skills Management and Career Orientation Workshops, Workplace Preparation Skills, and OSHA regulation training. Part 1 - Host Neville James invites Dr. David Hall to Analyze This. Dr. David Hall became the fifth president of UVI on August 1, 2009. Dr. Hall has a renowned career as an educational administrator and preeminent legal scholar, having taught law for over 25 years at the University of Mississippi, the University of Oklahoma, and Northeastern University. In May 2010, Dr. Hall received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the New England School of Law in Boston, Massachusetts, in appreciation of his outstanding contributions to the legal sector. The Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association recognized him as a Trailblazer. Dr. Hall was named by President George W. Bush to the Legal Services Corporation Board of Directors. His articles cover civil rights, the U.S. Constitution, racism, legal education, and social justice. He is the author of "The Spiritual Revitalization of the Legal Profession: A Search for Sacred Rivers," a book about the intersection of law and spirituality, and he talks nationally on social justice, leadership, diversity, and spiritual principles in professional life. UVI President David Hall's term concluded on July 31, 2024.

Former President Donald Trump says a gunshot penetrated his ear during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday. According to the Secret Service, one rally participant has died, and two others are in severe condition. A spokeswoman confirmed that the suspected shooter had died. Trump was rushed from the stage, and the rally ended shortly after.

Part 1 - Neville James talks with meteorologist with Manuel Ramos of the National Weather Service in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Hurricane Beryl became the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record in the Atlantic Ocean. Its winds reached 160 mph as it barreled through the southeastern Caribbean. This strength shattered the previous record by more than 2 weeks. Hurricane Emily achieved Category 5 status on July 17, 2005. Beryl made landfall on Grenada's Carriacau Island as a Category 4 storm, causing widespread damage with 150 mph winds.
