I'm not smart enough to be a nurse . . . yet
Ever notice why some students embrace challenges, while others shy away? Mindsets. Your mindset might just change how you approach your goals in nursing school… A fixed mindset: abilities are set. A growth mindset: abilities develop. When challenges appear, your mindsets matter. In nursing school, challenges are constant. A student with a fixed mindset avoids challenges. One with a growth mindset thrives when challenges arise. Having a growth mindset is the secret sauce for success. Putting effort into a fixed mindset is useless. It's time to shift your thinking. When considering success and failure, success in a fixed mindset is about validation, but in a growth mindset, it's about learning. Failure isn't a setback; it's an opportunity for growth. As a nursing student, adopt a growth mindset: see challenges as learning opportunities, embrace mistakes, and persist. Grow your knowledge and expand your growth mindset with NURSING.com.

INSULIN . . . Life Saver or Life Taker | Understanding How Insulin Works
Does insulin save lives, or does it take lives? Bodies that don’t produce enough insulin shut down, but if too much insulin is in the system it can be just as disastrous. As nurses, we are often tasked with administering insulin to our patients. When done incorrectly it can be life-threatening. For years I was a member of the code team, and count WHEN I was a new nurse I remember trying to keep track of the patients and insulin action times and the dosage times and everything else . . . I felt like I was drowning trying to keep it all straight in my head - I was both stressed and scared at the same time THAT’S WHEN I copied all the insulin peak and onset times down in my notebook. THIS HELPED me feel more relaxed and avoid my patient coding! If you want to see my notes they are at NURSING.com/cheatsheets. Honestly, I still use the cheatsheet today! What we cover in this episode: what is insulin understanding how insulin works what does insulin do types of insulin onset, peak, duration of insulin

Nursing Prioritization and ABCs | How I Almost Killed My Patient
I almost killed my patient. In the days after my scary event I spent hours and hours thinking through what I had done. I knew my ABCs, I had prioritized everything I was supposed to, how could things have gone so horribly wrong… See our full lesson on Prioritization at NURSING.com. And I realized that I had overlooked a very important part of my ABCs. It wasn’t the A - airway, the B - breathing, or the C - circulation What was left, what did I miss? What I violated was Safety. That small little “s” at the end of my ABCs - Safety And I learned 3 Crucial Take-Aways ABCs are Priorities not Checklists! Don't be complacent about the s for Safety Ask for help as soon as possible See our full lesson on Prioritization at NURSING.com.

"i don't know . . ."
Them: "How can we help?" Me: "I don't know . . ." This is a conversation I've had countless times over the last year. If only I had some sort of ailment that could be SEEN and FIXED . . . why can't it be a broken arm? A simple cast would "fix" the problem in just a matter of weeks. With mental health, you read the books, you do the checklists, you take the meds, you attend counseling . . . but at any moment . . . around any corner . . . there it is - ready to crush your hope and happiness. Each time you start a new medication you feel hopeful . . . "this time it will work" And each time a new medication doesn't help, you feel a bit more hopeless . . . "maybe I am beyond repair" They say mental health is a battle. It is. And for many of us it is a lifelong battle. And worse still, it is a silent battle - no one can SEE what you are going through. And the worst part is that you begin to convince yourself that it has to be silent - that you shouldn't share your struggle - that perhaps you are "beyond repair" - that others will judge.

My first day as a "REAL" nurse
My first job out of nursing school was in the Neuro ICU at a very large hospital in downtown Dallas. In this particular hospital, new ICU nurses complete a 13 week internship partnered with an experienced nurse (called a preceptor). My preceptors name was Vanessa, she was the typical ICU nurse type - a hardcore, type A nurse. She trained me well . . . but . . . those 13 weeks came to an end and it was time for me to be all on my own - no safety net to fall back on, no babysitter to make sure I did everything by the book - it was just ME. To be honest . . . I was terrified. I wish I'd had a tool like NURSING.com You CAN do this Happy Nursing! -Jon

4 words saved her life . . .
Just 4 words saved her life . . . “You CAN do this” In 2018 as a nursing student, Heather found herself in a very dark and lonely place. But those 4 words brought her out of that darkness and gave her hope. I was there with Heather when a nursing student asked her, “Will I make it through this?” ======== Here is her response: “You WILL make it through. When I got back from Iraq in 2008, I suffered from PTSD. And when I first found NURSING.com, I didn't think I was going to make it through. I felt like a failure, not only in nursing school, but in my life. My marriage was trash. I felt like a failure as a parent because I felt like I wasn't present. I had just failed med surg by 0.2%. I was ready to kill myself. I was done. But hearing Jon and everybody else say that you can do it, it is going to be okay, and you will make it through, saved my life. NURSING.com saved my life in more ways than one. And I'm here and I graduated, you CAN do this.” #NursingSchoolMotivation #MotivationForNursingStudents #NursingSchoolJourney #InspiringNursingStudents #NursingSchoolLife #StayMotivatedNurse #NursingSchoolInspiration

I failed the NCLEX 3 times, but then . . .
[After graduating from nursing school with a 3.8 GPA, Ashley failed the NCLEX 3 times. This is her story.] Learn more about NURSING.com: https://nursing.com First one was a knife to my chest. I was miserable. I really honestly thought this was my calling for so long. Nursing is what I wanted to do. For four years, I had worked so hard and I was unsure, should I change my career? Should I do something else? The first time I failed, I decided I would run 10 miles, and I cried the whole time. I remember, thinking, I want to die. I just don't understand. I thought I knew so much, and for some reason I failed and the rest of my class was successful. Why am I going through this? Taking the NCLEX was so stressful and all that pressure with people around you constantly leaving, and I am a very slow test taker. I had to really take a week and really ask myself, is this worth it? I did all this work, what went wrong? Is something wrong with me? Am I not smart? What am I going to do? You feel that your classmates will make fun of you or that they question if you're going to be a good nurse and you start to create all these webs and negativity and it just storms. Patience, positivity, prayer, and perseverance. As a nursing student, you are your hardest critic. Sometimes we're perfectionists and we put a lot of pressure on ourselves. So I would say strive for progress, but not perfection. I think of my experience as being in a boat in a really rough storm. To be a skilled sailor you can’t have calm waters. You need the storm. And so whatever purpose it was for me to fail the NCLEX three times, it really has blessed me and I feel like a better woman. I can't believe I'm saying that, but really I do. I feel like it strengthened me.

We Need More Nurses Who Care . . .
Working as a nurse in the ICU, I cared for many patients who are burned into my mind and heart forever. The rest of their hospital stay will be a blur, but their NURSES will be in their minds forever. It's okay to CARE as a nurse. We went into this profession because we want to ease human suffering. We need more nurses who CARE. Thank you for choosing this profession. I started NURSING.com to reduce your stress in nursing school, so you can focus on the patients. Happy Nursing! -Jon

What is your "WHY"? (and my personal stories)
During my first semester of nursing school my son was born and he had a couple issues that required him to stay in the hospital during his first couple weeks of life. My wife and I were sleeping at the hospital. I would go to nursing school and then come back and be with him. But there was one night where we were extremely tired, and so we went down to the hospital cafeteria to get some food. And when we came back a few minutes later after eating his nurse, her name was Tracy (I still remember her name 12 years later) was sitting there giving him a bath and cuddling him and keeping him warm. And it was very clear with the way that she was taking care of him and working with him, that she cared very deeply about him, about his exact needs in that moment. And it was in that moment that I truly realized that everyone is going to have that one nurse that they remember forever. Here I am 12 years later, and I still remember her. I remember that moment. I remember the sense of walking in there and that comfort that I had, knowing that she was there with my son taking care of him. You guys, this journey is not easy. And I know that maybe you haven't yet, but there's going to be a time in your career, whether that's in nursing school or whether it's as a nurse, that you're going to hit some kind of proverbial wall. You're going to feel like you can't keep going forward. But I want you guys to think about that. Why? Think about those moments that you've had that have helped you see why you're doing this. And if you need to write that down, put it as a screensaver on your phone. Send yourself an email every now and then with your why. We need you. We need nurses who care. We need you to stay in the career field. We need you to work in the career field. You guys can do this. I know that there's moments when it all seems impossible, but you can do this and I know that you can do this, so stick with it. Remember your why. Go out and be your best self today. 💙 Happy Nursing! -Jon

STOP SCAMMING NURSING STUDENTS! (and why I dropped out of nursing school with 10 weeks left…)
Get NCLEX Flash Notes here: https://nclexbook.com I know just as well as any other nursing student - nursing school is freaking EXPENSIVE! I attended an Accelerated BSN program or ABSN designed for working professionals interested in a career change. That means that it was about 4 years of nursing school compressed into 18 months of grueling torture - about at the cost of all 4 years combined! My wife and I were pregnant with our son Taz at the time, and… … We were buried in student debt… …We were living on food stamps and WIC… .. We were sleeping on a mattress I pulled from the dumpster… …I was giving my all (what was left) to becoming a nurse… Once Taz was born, we found out that he had a fairly rare congenital birth defect that required multiple surgeries and weeks of hospital stays, just in his first year of life. I will never forget staying up late into the night studying for exams in his hospital room by the light of the Emergency Room signage below then waking up in the early hours with him or going across the street to school and rushing back to baby Taz. There were times I would bring him up to the school library during his nap time so I could attend a study group while he slept in his stroller. I was completely dedicated to being an amazing nurse. 1st Semester GPA - 4.0. 2nd Semester GPA - 4.0 I was rocking it, but Taz’s surgeries were really starting to weigh on my wife and I. That’s when the 3rd semester started, and I got the nursing professor from hell… She had an utter lack of understanding of education, clinical nursing, and general people skills. Over the course of the semester she only became more and more obtuse with her thinking and was clearly not in the game of educating nursing students but reaping vengeance on some past experience. Not quite who I was paying tens of thousands of dollars to study under... I wanted nothing to do with this woman, and therefore this class, and even nursing school in general! I had lost all motivation to keep going in becoming a nurse. With only 10 weeks to go until graduation, I dropped out of nursing school…

Nursing Education Has To Change (stop getting your feelings hurt)
Get the free NCLEX Flash Notes ebook at: https://nclexbook.com When we become a part of a group, especially a group that is so underfunded and understaffed (like Nurse Educators) it becomes very easy to defend every action and every individual. (In the past, I have mentioned several things that I feel need to change in nursing education. You can read about that here and here.) This is flawed however, because doing so denies the issues and neglects the need for change. Rather than keeping an open mind about how to improve, the moment we try to protect or defend an entire industry, we enter into confirmation bias and inhibit our ability to objectively see the need for change. I know, without a doubt, that whenever I mention the need for change in nursing education we will get an email or two from a professor or administrator ranting up and down saying . . . (my answers below each one). “How dare you say there are flaws in nursing education!” It is completely asinine to assume that there are NO flaws in ANY industry, company, or individual. Hell yes there are flaws in nursing education . . . you know what? There are flaws with NRSNG and with Jon Haws too. None of us are perfect. It’s time to be a bit more humble about what needs to change. “You are everything that is wrong with nursing!” Ummm . . . if pointing out areas of improvement and then creating those lifelines for nursing students after the educators they have relied on have failed them is “what’s wrong” with nursing . . .then we have much bigger problems. “If students weren’t so lazy.” No doubt, there are some lazy students out there. However, all 300,000+ nursing students are not lazy just like all nursing educators are not “bad”. Lazy students do not preclude the educator from educating. Just as poor educators do not preclude the student from graduating. “We don’t know the professors side of your story. I’m sure you were in the wrong.” I state exactly what I did wrong on this post. Being will to openly share my failure shouldn’t grant you the right to attack my vulnerability and excuse poor education. “Nursing school was hard for me, so it needs to be hard for other students . . . it’s the school of hard knocks.” (p.s. this one pisses me off more than any other) Is this a joke? Like seriously, is this a joke? It’s your freaking job to educate. I would NEVER wish on anyone to work on a floor where this mentality was adopted. Imagine working with nurses who think it’s okay for other nurses to struggle just because they’ve had some hard shifts. Like . . . is this a joke. If you see a co-worker struggling you just turn your head and let them sink rather than throw them a lifeline. Get over yourself. “We will NEVER share your material with our students.” Thanks. You just proved my point that nursing education needs to change! How juvenile it is to deny your students of helpful materials just because your feelings got hurt. The funniest thing about this email is that they are emailing us AFTER finding AND using our materials. Then, they get their feelings hurt and refuse to distribute anything NRSNG to their students. Dude! You just proved the point. Some administrators have gone as far as to BAN myself (Jon) from physically coming on their campus. Come on! It’s time to grow up, recognize the flaws, and provide your students with anything that will help them. “You are a bad example of negativity in nursing.” I take offense to this. Our podcast has 800+ episodes covering an enormous amount of material on positivity. Our blog has 800+ posts, our YouTube channel has 400+ videos, our Instagram account has 700+ posts . . . 99% of this material is positive to nursing and nursing education. If I point out one flaw or state that “nursing education needs to change” and you see that a “negativity in nursing”, I fear we are so deep into confirmation bias . . .

The Most Boring Podcast You Will Ever Listen To
Download the app here: https://nursing.com/app/ Time management is perhaps the one element of nursing that all nurses, from novice to expert, struggle with more than anything else. From the moment you enter nursing school you are given an unmanageable amount of tasks to complete. This does not change as you leave school and enter the workforce. Part of succeeding in nursing school and scoring well on exams comes done to learning how to manage your time. Hence, we begin our “Test Taking” course with a module in Time Management. I believe this is the foundation to success in school and throughout your career as a nurse. Mastering this one skill will make all the difference in your career. Here I will present a few key strategies the nurse and nursing student can implement to improve their command on their time.

10 Step Note Taking Method For Nursing School
Download the new app here: https://nursing.com/app/ You will have few opportunities in life to feel as inundated as you will during nursing school. Sometimes it feels like the entire object of nursing school is to see how many students they can stress out of the program. There is no situation where the old adage applies more realistically; “drinking from a firehose” In all seriousness, nursing school is intense. You are learning how to care for a human being in the most complex of situations both physically and emotionally and there is so much to be learned. On top of this you are only given a few months to cover the 1,875 pages of a MedSurg textbook before switching to an entirely new topic. We all understand the problem . . . I’ll move on.

Study Tips for Nursing School Success
To watch the lesson and access all the links, visit: https://nursing.com/lesson/01-05-study-tips-for-success/ To download the new app, visit: https://nursing.com/app/ Hey guys! I’m excited today to talk to you about a study tips that are for sure going to make you a successful nursing student and nurse! So in this lesson I want to talk to you about where to start in regards to studying, a few of the do’s and don’ts of studying and different types of techniques or aids that may help you! Ok guys so I just wanted to start off by saying our founder Jon Haws has an awesome blog entry called “How to slay nursing school: Forget study tips go for strategy” if you haven’t already read you definitely need to! He gives fantastic tips for any nursing student when it comes to studying and that link has actually been attached to this lesson so check it out! So actually here in this slide I have added a few of Jons tips to start us out! Jon says and it makes perfect sense….have a battle plan meaning nursing school is very much like a battle and it’s not meant to be easy….if it was everyone would do it! So right off the bat figure out how you are going to attack it by adopting study habits and a routine that will make you successful which we are going to talk about. Another thing Jon says is “cut the clutter” meaning not every single thing you learn in nursing school is extremely important or it doesn’t really apply to real life nursing. Jon suggests using the SSIP mnemonic for this – “Scan and sift” meaning find the most important new information and throw out the redudant material. “Import in intervals” meaning take your studying in small portions rather than huge chunks at a time which will help with retaining and comprehending. After you continue to scan, sift, and import in intervals you will “pin it” or retain it and it will stay with you. And remember whatever you are learning or studying we want to apply it to nursing because that in fact is your end goal. Not only will it help you during your studies but also will help you pass your boards and most importantly to be a great nurse!
