United Through Time: James W. Gibson
Hi everyone, Harry Robinson here. If you're interested in Manchester United history, I have another podcast you might like, and after a two-and-a-half-year hiatus, there's a new episode of United Through Time out now! It's about James W. Gibson, club president from 1932 until his 1951 death. He's an inspiring visionary of a man. Here's a five-minute teaser to see if you like it.
If you so, here's a link to listen in full on podfollow: https://pod.fo/e/22434c
After the main episode, there'll also be a reaction show with Wayne Barton - author of 22 United books - and I in which we discuss the similarities between Gibson and Ratcliffe and why that era is so important to study.

Bonus: Where does Mount fit in, do Ten Hag's plans reduce this team's strengths?
Answering these questions from one of our Patrons, hosts Harry Robinson and Jack Tait essentially ponder over whether Erik ten Hag's ideal plans for this Manchester United team make it greater than the sum of its parts or reduce its strengths:
Where does Mount fit in once he’s fit?
Can a Bruno, Mount and Mainoo midfielder work?
What do we do with Casemiro?

S8 E46: International break
63 days of the English football season remain. 15 fixtures, minimum. There could be up to 19. You know what time it is... It’s the "business end" of the season. The "back end" of the season. The "home straight". Let’s have it.
On the Manchester United Weekly Podcast this week, hosts Harry Robinson and Jack Tait get happily waylaid discussing contrasting fan cultures in the women's game, at United, Borrusia Dortmund, FC Koln and in the USA. They then consider the next couple of months, previewing our next game, against Newcastle, and answering questions from our Patreons. There are predictions for the rest of the season and plenty more to dive into. Enjoy!

An explanation for our absence
You might have noticed we've not been releasing much over the last couple of weeks. Or you might not have noticed, it has been Christmas after all! Anyway, here's a very brief message from Harry Robinson to explain why we've been unable to record and when we're back. This isn't the Manchester Evening News, so no clickbait here... we'll be back on Wednesday 11 January after the League Cup quarter-final against Charlton Athletic. We can't wait!

S6 E41: Season Review
Harry Robinson and Jack Tait review the 2020/21 season for Manchester United.
-----
A season which began and ended with disappointment, but in between came the chaos, of a football season like no other in which at times Manchester United thrived, and at other times they drooped. Chaos of a 6-1 defeat and a 9-0 victory, victory in Paris and defeat in Istanbul, a thumping of Leeds, wins at City, last-minute blocks, 40-yard lobs, Cup disappointment, penalty shoot-out despondency. And in the end, when it finally came to its conclusion after 61 games, fans had finally returned. It's been some season, a long old slog at times, welcome to our season review on the Manchester United Weekly Podcast. Thanks for joining us.
We'll be discussing the season in general, how we could rate it out of 10, what we understand Manchester United to be after another trophyless season but a second consecutive top four finish, we'll be handing out awards of best player, goals, worst moment etc. We'll remember things that happened this season that we'd forgotten, I'll give you a round-up of the seasons for the U23s and the U18s as well as the loan players in the middle of the show before we talk about next season. What do we expect from our PL rivals, what do we expect from Utd, what does Solskjaer need to do in the transfer market and what would be a good season. There's plenty to dive into.

S6 E40: Europa League Final (review)
One single kick of a ball, the power to change the world. Not quite so dramatic in Gdansk, but still one single kick of the ball, by a goalkeeper of all people, had the power to change things at United. The power to make this week a special one, full of celebration for United and us as fans. It wasn't to be. The reality was win for United in a 22-penalty shoot-out and a poor performance would have been papered over. Lose and a poor performance would draw instant over-reactions from all corners. We try to steer clear of that.
We'll be reviewing the season as a whole in some detail in the next week or so, looking at the big picture, what this season really deserves in our memories, what it tells us about the future under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and we'll preview the summer, outline our thoughts on the transfer window, the young players breaking through and what the team needs. But that'll all come in a week or so, for now we just focus on the game and rather than getting caught in a roundabout of disappointment and regret, let's go through it a bit systematically, beginning with the team selection...

S6 E39: Europa League Final (preview)
Manchester United travel to Gdansk, Poland to take on La Liga side Villarreal in the UEFA Europa League Final. It'll be a chance for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to win his first trophy as manager of the club and an opportunity for the Reds to lift major European silverware for the sixth time in the club's history. There is much to discuss.
Hosts Harry Robinson and Jack Tait first talk about the significance of the before they're joined by Jamie Kemble, a British Villarreal fan who offers insight into what is a small-town club with a real family feel to it. Jamie provides some insight into Unai Emery's tactics, the Yellow Submarine's stand-out players, including Pau Torres and Gerard Moreno.
After chatting to Jamie, the boys talk about the absence of Harry Maguire, a possible 3-4-3 formation that Ole could deploy and then talk about where they'll be watching the game with tales of airport football. Enjoy the show!

S6 E29: An a-shaw-ed derby victory
Manchester United followed up a dreary Wednesday night in South London with a firey start away to rivals Manchester City. Bruno Fernandes put United in front after 2 minutes and the Reds followed it up in the second half with a wonderful goal from Luke Shaw, the club's best player of 2021 and perhaps one of the league's best too. As the sun set on Manchester on Sunday night, the city was red, for a time at least. City are still top of the league, and by some distance, but derby victory provides a boost for confidence, for momentum and for morale going into a tough run of fixtures for a United side who had struggled to create before this 2-0 win at the Etihad.
This week on the Manchester United Weekly Podcas with Harry Robinson and Jack Tait, we're reviewing games against City and Palace, discussing the wider context of the recent happenings at United and providing you with an extensive youth, loan and women's round-up. Casey Stoney's side won 3-0 and James Garner received high praise from Chris Hughton. At the end of the show, we looked ahead to games against AC Milan and West Ham before Patrons get a bonus Q&A after we wrap things up in which we'll talk Ole's tactics, Varane and more. S6 E28: A week of 0-0s
Manchester United are held by Real Sociedad but progress in the Europa League with a tasty tie against AC Milan to follow and then fail to score against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. That result leaves United second in the Premier League and looking down rather than up, one point ahead of Leicester, four ahead of West Ham and six ahead of Chelsea. It's a decent position but it feels like yet another missed opportunity and yet another underwhelming game from a United who have rarely impressed since the turn of the year.
In this episode of the Manchester United Weekly Podcast, Harry Robinson and Jack Tait review the Chelsea game, provide you with your regular youth, loan and women's round-up and look ahead to games against Crystal Palace and Manchester City.

S6 E27: A good week
As we're teased with the end of lockdown 3 in Britain, Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continue to provide wins to help with the mood. One of those wins was an excellent dispatching of good Spanish side Real Sociedad, played in Turin in the UEFA Europa League. The second was less convincing but no less important, a 3-1 victory against Newcastle which puts United in a great position in the Premier League.
Hosts Harry Robinson and Jack Tait are talking both of those games and previewing the second leg against Real Sociedad. As always, there's you extensive youth loan and women's round-up in the middle of the show where Harry talks Isak Hansen-Aaroen, loan moves aplenty and more.

S6 E26: The Midlands Inquisition
It's a slog of a season. Game after game. After the woeful start in September and October, Manchester United grew to be excellent at winning against the 'bottom 14'. Not anymore. A 1-1 draw to West Brom follows shock defeat to Sheffield United and a draw to Everton and now Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side will have to do something they've been unable to do in the league this season, beat fellow members of the top six to make up for dropped points. With upcoming games against Chelsea and Manchester City, the opportunity will be there to do so. It's a set-back for United and for Solskjaer, not one that requires an inquisition into the whole team, club and coaching staff, but one which disappoints and frustrates. United were passive at the Hawthorns, in defence and attack, and they left with a point when they deserved little more.
Welcome back to the Manchester United Weekly Podcast where the mood can be summed up by a comment sent in by one of our Patrons, Michael Byerts, who said, "is there anything more to be said after that than uggghhhh?"
But, there is. A little. We're talking West Brom, West Ham, the FA Cup and in the middle of the show, before a preview of Thursday's Europa League game against Real Sociedad, you'll get your extensive youth, loan and women's round-up. Shola Shoretire and Joe Hugill are amongst the goals again while badge-kissing Charlie McNeill scores four in the Manchester derby.

S6 E25: Goal-happy (at both ends)
Hosts Harry Robinson and Jack Tait consider a week of mixed emotions for Manchester United. It was a week of football which, had it ended only 20 seconds earlier, would have been quite brilliant - a 9-0 win against Southampton followed by victory against Everton. But Dominic Calvert-Lewin's late equaliser condemned United to a late sour taste and made it a good and memorable week but not a brilliant one, particularly in the light of victories for Manchester City.
Harry and Jack talk about the two games, De Gea and plenty more.

S6 E24: Reality check
The reality check we expected hit home hard in a week where Manchester United took one point away from games against bottom-placed Sheffield United and Arsenal. It leaves United trailing City at the top of the table by three points with Pep Guardiola's team still holding a game-in-hand.
Hosts Harry Robinson and Jack Tait look back at two very disappointing results.
We'll also give you your regular youth, loan and women's round-up. There's loads to talk about. Teden Mengi is heading out on loan, Garner and Chong have switched clubs and a 17-year-old scored four goals in the under-23s. Oh, and Amad Diallo made his first appearance for United.

S6 E23: This Means More
Some days in football give you everything you crave. Others don't. At Anfield a week ago, a 0-0 draw left you craving more, craving that release of energy and tension that a goal brings. At Old Trafford in the FA Cup, one of the country's most historic fixtures delivered in buckets. It excited and entertained and most importantly, Manchester United won. 22 years on from the day that an Ole Gunnar Solskjaer late winner against Liverpool had continued United's treble dreams, this time it was Bruno Fernandes to arrive off the bench and provide that moment we craved.

S6 E15: Outcoached, outthought. Out.
Review of a 3-2 defeat to RB Leipzig and previewing Saturday's game vs City.
"In the two days since we last spoke to you, things have changed. A cautiously positive narrative has very quickly been replaced by despair. Paul Pogba's agent, Mino Raiola, or, to put it in Ferguson's words, the 'shitbag', jumped at the chance to remind everyone that Pogba doesn't want to be at United after his client put in one slightly better than average display against West Ham. And then a rampant opening quarter of an hour from Julien Nagalsmann's RB Leipzig exposed every single one of Manchester United's weaknesses. The previously in-form Harry Maguire was guilty of gifting goals away again through his positioning. Luke Shaw returned from injury to do the same. United's midfield without Pogba, who was on the bench, and Fred, who was suspended, could not cope. United's defence looked short of confidence and quality in the fact of a well-drilled attack with a very specific knowledge of how they wanted to score goals. At the other end, United broke into space through the Leipzig back line and either missed the chance or misplayed the final ball. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was so emphatically out-thought by a much younger manager in Nagelsmann that even after 12 minutes, the conversation about his future had been restarted.
And the shame is that still, in the face of all this, United almost came from behind. Only a third goal from Leipzig, also terribly defended, left that task too great and now Manchester United are out of the Champions League.
The truth is that United didn't go out because of defeat in Leipzig. It was because of the away loss to Basaksehir, an inexplicable defeat. But after winning away in Paris and thrashing Leipzig 5-0, United have gone out. That should be inexplicable but it isn't. It's through bad performances and bad maangement."

Death, taxes, putting on a mask, washing your hands and Manchester United coming from behind to win away from home. That's life in autumn 2020. Welcome to the Manchester United Weekly Podcast where, yes, we are yet again talking about the world's most confusing football team. Shambolic in the first half, intense and stylish in the second. 3-1 winners against West Ham. The scoreline was the other way round when United hosted PSG in midweek.
We're dissecting both games, their wider implications and what they mean going forward for United.
As always, I'll bring you your regular youth, loan and women's round-up in a spectacularly good weekend for United. Wins all round, near or top of the league for all. Here that at about 25 minutes or so.
We'll then look ahead to games against RB Leipzig, a crucial Champions League group stage game, the last one.

Harry also chats to Simon Edwards, a South American football journalist, about an Instagram story from Edinson Cavani which read "gracias negrita". Simon explains the context behind the use of the word "negrita" and why it was done with no harm intended.

S6 E11: Analysing Ferguson's defeats, with author John Silk
"Sometimes in football you have to hold your hand up and say, yeah, they're better than us." Those are the old words of Sir Alex Ferguson. But this is also a man who openly admitted, time after time, "I don't like losing" and said "I tell the players that the bus is moving. This club has to progress. And the bus wouldn't wait for them. I tell them to get on board."
The greatest football manager of his era, Fergie is remembered for the victories, an insatiable desire to win, a commitment to glory so thorough and disciplined that he saw off rivals in all shapes, sizes and forms.
But what about the defeats? Because there were many. 271 to be precise. Well, Ferguson himself has said the following.
"Losing is a powerful management tool so long as it does not become a habit."
"You learn more from defeats than you do from victories"
In a new book titled Even the Defeats, journalist John Silk tells the story of how the painful moments of Sir Alex Ferguson's reign at Man Utd inspired him to lead the club to its greatest successes.
Beginning with a 5-1 loss at Manchester City and ending with the final Premier League title, the book looks at what was perhaps Ferguson's greatest strength: dealing and overcoming adversity. With views from players, coaches and other members of the staff, Even the Defeats comes out in the next few weeks and I'm pleased to be joined by the author, John Silk, to talk about Ferguson, those defeats and the book.
John is a journalist working for Deutsche Welle. He's covered sports and international affairs for more than a decade and has followed United for 40 years.

S6 E7: Hero Rashford, Chelsea & PSG
Off the pitch, Marcus Rashford is still leading a campaign to end child hunger. Hundreds of cafes, restaurants and businesses across the country are taking on the challenge themselves to help feed children during the upcoming October half-term after the government voted against continuing free school meals into the holidays. He's a national hero. On the pitch, it was Rashford who came up with a powerful and accurate late strike to give Manchester United a sweet and brilliant victory at the Parc des Princes against Paris Saint-Germain. He almost followed it up with another match-winner, against Chelsea on Saturday evening. But the Londoners new goalkeeper Edouard Mendy came up big with two crucial saves and United were held to a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.
It's been a good week overall for United. A 4-1 win against Newcastle, a 2-1 win against PSG and a frustrating 0-0 draw against Chelsea. Perhaps the latter is a missed chance to carry on some very good momentum. But United's season has properly started now. Welcome to the Manchester United Weekly Podcast and S6 E7. We're talking PSG, Chelsea and looking ahead to RB Leipzig and Arsenal. In the middle of the show we'll have our youth, loan and women's round-up as the U23s are led once again by recently turned 17 Joe Hugill who has had a sensational start to his United career.

After 350 days of action, the most remarkable league campaign of our lifetimes comes to an end and Manchester United have finished third. S5 E39: Winning streak ends in a stomach-emptying manner
Hosts Harry Robinson and Jack Tait mourn the end of Manchester United's winning streak. The Reds drew 2-2 with Southampton on Monday night and threw away the opportunity to climb to third in the Premier League table. The question of a top four finish remains one which United can decide themselves. It's in their hands. Win all their games and United will finish fourth at the least.
But there's plenty to talk about in a packed episode where we dissect the draw with Southampton, answer a whole host of questions from listeners and preview another big week, a league game against Palace and then the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea.

So on the Manchester United Weekly Podcast this week we talk about Greenwood, his double for United in a 5-2 win against AFC Bournemouth. It's April 24th and on this day in 2007, Manchester United came from behind to overcome Kaka's AC Milan in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final.

S5 E32 - One year on from Ole's apology at Goodison
Exactly one year ago today, Manchester United were humiliated by Everton at Goodison Park. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer apologised to fans but it wasn't enough. This was one of the worst defeats for the club in Premier League history, at least.
With a year having passed and the pandemic-enforced break giving us a chance to reflect, Harry Robinson and Jack Tait discuss how Manchester United have progressed since that miserable day in Liverpool (more miserable than the others at least...)
We talk about the mentality of the squad, the transfers made and the players who have been sold.
We also choose one goal each to recommend you, the listener, to go and watch on YouTube to fill the time or distract yourself in these strange times. That's near the back end of the episode.

Much-Cited United: Busby Babes in Madrid
In the second episode of 'Much-Cited United', Harry Robinson looks at a European Cup semi-final between the 'worldly' Real Madrid of the 1950s and the Busby Babes.
It's April 11th and on this day in 1957, Sir Matt Busby took his young Manchester United side to play the European champions, Real Madrid. Los Blancos were too good for the Reds and won 3-1.
Through the lens of that game, Harry chats to the brilliant Roy Cavanagh MBE, an author of numerous football books, interviewer of United greats and United fan from birth. Roy remembers the 1956/57 season and takes us through United's first ever European campaign.
We talk Tommy Taylor, Duncan Edwards, Bobby Charlton, Billy Whelan and more.

S5 E30 - Goalkeeping conundrums & a big win
A 1-1 draw with Everton followed a 5-0 thrashing of Club Brugge and both results leave plenty of questions to be asked by hosts Harry Robinson and Jack Tait.
Should David de Gea leave to make way for young Dean Henderson, out on loan at Sheffield United? Or should United stay loyal to De Gea, the player with the 32nd most appearances in the club’s history?
Just how good has Bruno Fernandes been? Has any recent United signing come close to his instant impact?
Odion Ighalo’s first goal for United is revelled in and Scott McTominay’s return from injury is a boost.
As well as all of that, we preview upcoming matches in the FA Cup and Premier League, against Derby County (A) and Manchester City (H).
And in addition to ALL of that, we’ve got our regular and extensive youth and women’s round-up.

S4 E19 - Solskjaer's at the wheel, how good does it feel
Merry Christmas everyone. I hope your true love brings you 12 Cantonas.
A busy week for Manchester United in which things twisted and turned until we landed upon the man who put the ball in the German’s net. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - Manchester United manager. It sounds good. It looks good. And so does the football. A 5-1 victory against Cardiff City in the late kick-off on Saturday evening to start the festive period.
Mike Phelan is back at the club, too, and his United side have scored 5 goals in two consecutive games, 2043 days apart. The last game he was involved in was the 5-5 draw with West Brom.
It was our first time scoring five since that game and a day of happiness and relief. An exciting day. A day that doesn’t signal a huge turning point, it doesn’t mean everything will now be fine. We will lose games this season, and probably quite a few. We still probably won’t make top 4 or win a trophy, but the excitement is back, the mood has rocketed upwards and it’s Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s red army now, and that’s brilliant to say.

S4 E14 - The mediocrity project
Manchester United are 13 points off the relegation zone and 14 off the top of the table. And yet this is the team who came from behind in Turin against the Champions League favourites. These players and this team are clearly not spineless, they clearly can be great, they can do great things and can show how much they care. But a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace really was deja vu, a flashback to every game against opposition of this standard.
Hosts Harry Robinson and Jack Tait discuss the result and look ahead to games against Valencia and Southampton as well as providing you with our regular extensive youth update as the U18s Manchester derby takes place.

S4 E9 - Jose's Lifeline
Passion. Blood. Sweat. Tears. No, it’s not Andy Tate, but we saw some pride from the Manchester United players in a 3-2 comeback win against Newcastle on Saturday evening.
Friday evening saw reports come out that Jose Mourinho was set to be sacked regardless of the result against Newcastle. That hasn’t happened, obviously. But when United went two goals down within the opening 10 minutes, it looked quite possible. It was an abysmal start, but United scored three times in the last 25 minutes through Mata, Martial and Sanchez. If the conceding two goals within the space of three minutes was traditional of this season, the comeback was more traditional of one of Fergie’s United team.
We saw quality, determination, pride and effort. That we haven’t seen that all season is obviously a negative, but it’s a life line for Mourinho.
So we’re talking that, and as always we have our regular youth and loan round-up as we head into the international break.

S2 E22 - Rooney x250
Hosts Harry Robinson and Jack Tait talk and reminisce about Wayne Rooney as the Englishman surpasses Sir Bobby Charlton to become Manchester United’s all-time top goalscorer.Rooney got the big 250 on Saturday afternoon with a wonderful free-kick to snatch a point in the 93rd minute from Stoke City.Although there’s some nice talk about Rooney’s best strikes, both Reds are frustrated by United’s inability to finish chances as another chance to catch up on rivals is wasted with Liverpool losing and Manchester City and Spurs drawing. As always we have an extensive youth and loan round-up as the under-18s draw 1-1 at Everton and there’s more positivity for loanee goalkeepers Sam Johnstone and Dean Henderson as well as Andreas Pereira who scored a Ronaldinho-esque free-kick for Granada.Rooney talk 00:00Stoke game 22:40Youth/Loan 33:00Hull City 34:00Questions 36:00Find us on Twitter:Harry RobinsonJack TaitPodcastGUEST | Charlie MalamEnjoy the show! Interview: Oliver Kay on new book, Forever Young: Adrian Doherty
The Times' Chief Football Correspondent Oliver Kay joins Harry Robinson in a special edition of the Manchester United Weekly Podcast.Predominantly, they discuss Oli's new book, Forever Young. It is the story of Adrian Doherty, once regarded as "the new George Best" and "better than Ryan Giggs". In one of football's tragic stories, "the lost genius" was forced out of the game by a cruciate knee ligament injury. He left football entirely as his former friends, the Class of '92, were lifting Cup after Cup and League after League trophy. In June 2000, having moved to the Hague, Doherty slipped into a river and never woke again. His story is a sad one, but as Oliver Kay is keen to remind us, Doherty was a unique individual and while it is a sad story, it is fascinating. After discussing the book, they briefly discuss Manchester United and how the club also now fit "the lost genius" tag, although in a different way to Doherty.Forever Young, by Quercus Books, is released on May 19th.
