The season has had its ups and downs, but Mostafa Asal always finds a way to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. He did that once again by finishing the year with a huge win at the tradition laden Hong Kong Open. Episode 235 Gina Kennedy
2022 Commonwealth Games gold medalist Gina Kennedy couldn't have written a better script for the 2021/22 squash season. She reached #8 in the world after starting the season miles below that, she reached the season finale pro tour finals in her first full season as a pro, and to cap it off Gina brought home Commonwealth gold in the ladies squash singles. Qamar Zaman is one of the all time greats; that's a given. Winner of the 1975 British Open and reaching world #1 in that same year, Zaman was truly the pioneer of shot making squash. Not only that, Zaman combined this pioneering shot making with a sense of humor which made him the box office player of his day. Winner of the 2021 PSA Tour Final last month and most definitely in the ascendancy in the world's top 10, Mostafa Asal has shown that he's primed for a run at the world number 1 spot. Unfortunately, travel visa issues led to his withdraw from the World Championships in Chicago. Yet, Mostafa sees this as an opportunity to prepare going forward and isn't going to dwell on it. Mostafa and I battled through a few minor wifi issues, but in the end this was a tremendous conversation. PSA CEO Alex Gough and his team have had their hands full trying to piece together everything that Covid-19 has thrown their way. Well, there may be light at the end of the tunnel, but that doesn't mean things will be back to normal anytime soon. In a very informative and candid conversation, Alex lays out all of the key variables required to get pro squash back up and running, including a potential date and location for long-awaited return. Although nothing is etched in stone, this is good news. Reigning World Open Champion Tarek Momen wasn't going to let anything stop him from hoisting the 2019 World Open Championship; not poor form, plantar fasciitis, or a 1-2 2-6 in the fourth deficit in the third round. Chris has carved out a very well-rounded coaching resume to date, and last week after being name Head Squash Coach for the University of Western Ontario Mustangs, he may have landed the coaching position he's always wanted. Former member of the Mustangs several years back, Chris has since developed into one of the game's most innovative and exciting young squash instructors. In February, 1998 Peter Nicol reached world #1 supplanting legend Jansher Khan, and thereafter along with Jonathan Power, gave us one of the most memorable eras in the game's history. He went on to hold the number 1 ranking several times throughout his illustrious career,at one point for 24 successive months b/t January 2002 and December 2003, placing him firmly among the greatest to ever play the game. Academic research on the performance of squash's elite players is about as common as finding squash reporting in the mainstream media; limited at best. Neil Gibson's research entitled "Physical Preparation for Elite Level Squash Players", is a sight for sore eyes and breathes new life into how we go about our training, particularly with respect to the high intensity, 80-90% of max heart rate that comes with playing squash at an elite level. Chairman of the PSA since 2008, President of the Saudi Arabia Squash Federation and sponsor to many top pros over the years dating back to Michelle Martin, Ziad Al Turki has dedicated his life to the game of squash. From growing the game in the Middle East to growing the professional game globally, the Sultan of Squash has spearheaded many of the great initiatives globally and nationally. Globally, he's been instrumental in paving the way for PSA Squash TV, gender pay equity on the PSA tour and prize money at its highest level. In Saudi Arabia, he was the man behind the first ever women's professional sports event (A PSA tour event), and he's laying the groundwork a grassroots squash movement in the country which is bearing fruit already.

Episode 094 Christopher Binnie
Don't look past Jamaica at the 2019 Pan Am Games; Christopher Binnie leads the Jamaican squad which also includes PSA tour vet Lewis Walters and Bruce Burrowes. They're certainly one of the dark horses to hit the podium at the end of the day. Chris has had an impressive squash career to date, including 4 stand out years at Trinity College and 4 PSA titles along with a career high 65 world ranking. Things were progressing very nicely until a serious health scare derailed things a bit near the end of 2018; a mini-stroke which undoubtedly impeded a run a great squash. He's back on track again though, and ready to represent Jamaica at the Pan Am Games in a few weeks time. Sadly, I didn't get around to asking him about doppelganger Rory McIlroy :)

Steve Lawton is a living legend of Canadian squash. Former #2 in Canada and top 10 in the Canadian rankings for many years, Steve played the game like no other. He showed up in a big way for the podcast, and I'd like to make this a tribute episode for Steve as he plans to retire after over 20 years as the Head Squash Pro at the Vancouver Racquet Club (VRC).

The 2018 Linear Logistics Bankers Hall Pro-Am PSA squash tournament kicks off today in Calgary, Alberta, and today I had a great chat with an old friend, Bob Ballinger, head squash pro at the Bankers Hall Club. The event is in its 17th year, hometown boy Andrew Schnell is defending the title, and there's the possibility of an all-Canadian final. I've picked a dark horse to win it all though. Ron Beck, a former member of Princeton's varsity squash team, WPSA tour player, executive director of the College Squash Association, is famously prolific for giving us the Squashtalk website.
