Sid Pattison - Enjoying Life For What It Is

Sid is a high-altitude mountain guide, a heli-ski guide and more recently a self-taught builder! Sid lives in The Cascades in Washington State and he is currently building a house in the middle of nowhere and thoroughly enjoying the process. Sid and Kenton met at Everest Basecamp in 2018 when they were both guiding there. Sid has summited Everest three times, from both the South Side and the North Side, and they share stories about their experiences in this week’s episode of Cool Conversations. Sid spends a lot of his time heli-ski guiding and has built up a base of loyal clients who return to ski with him year after year. He talks about the importance of building their trust and also understanding skill levels of the group to keep everyone safe on the mountain. Kenton describes him as a renegade or a non-conformist, which he agrees with, but not at the expense of safety. This is a Cool Conversation between two friends that touches on many different subjects, so be prepared for the conversation to go anywhere!

Dr Sarah Ruggins: Embracing Resilience

This week, Kenton speaks to Dr Sarah Ruggins who, it is fair to say, leaves him lost for words a few times! Sarah embraced academia when she was younger and she holds four degrees in four different subjects. Her interest in philosophy and economics led her to a career in finance where she now holds a senior position in one of the biggest wealth management companies in the UK. Sarah is also a phenomenal athlete. As a junior, she ran Junior Olympic qualifying times in the 10,000m and had a promising future until a horrific illness left her bedridden for a very long time. Since recovering, she has learnt to ride a bike and has recently completed the epic Transcontinental Race (TCR) from Roubaix in Paris to Istanbul in Turkey. She covered 4,400km in 13 days over multiple mountain ranges, and with very little sleep. Her determination, passion and resilience shine through very strongly in this conversation – enjoy!

Benny Lieber: Bringing the Energy

Benny Lieber is an accomplished climber and is also described by Kenton as 'the next generation of high-altitude mountain guides'. Benny and Kenton met at Everest Base Camp earlier this year and hit it off immediately with Kenton feeding off Benny's unquenchable energy. Benny is a product developer by trade, but gave it up for a life in the mountains back in 2016. He moved to Alaska and lived for several years in his car before being able to afford an apartment, but he has now found his niche and is a full-time mountain guide. He has many summits to his name including Everest, Lhotse, K2, Manaslu and Vinson and we are certain there are more to come. Kenton and Benny discuss the changing world of mountain guiding, they compare stories of different mountains, and Benny describes the luxury of absolute wilderness in Alaska. Listen now to this high-energy episode!

Brent Bishop - Framed by Family

A fellow mountain guide and mountaineer, Brent Bishop first summited Everest in 1994 and now describes himself as an 'aging climber'. He talks with Kenton about many of his mountain expeditions and how his family history helped to frame his experiences. Brent is a successful businessman and has juggled life in the mountains with his businesses. Last year he suffered a huge heart attack at his local climbing centre, despite being fit and healthy, but that hasn't stopped him! This episode is a classic Cool Conversations - lots of interesting topics covered and a few previously unknown facts uncovered!

Ed Jackson: The Mountain Within Me

This week, Kenton talks to Ed Jackson, a former professional rugby player who sustained a spinal cord injury in 2017 and is now living a very active and adventurous life as an incomplete quadriplegic.  Ed's remarkable story is documented in his new film, The Mountain Within Me, which is released in cinemas later this week. Ed tells Kenton how the mountains have supported both his physical and emotional recovery, and how his experiences have inspired him to set up a charity for young adults who have experienced physical and/or mental trauma. Ed's positivity in the face of the daily challenges that he still faces is extraordinary. His acceptance of his injuries, his willingness to push his limits and his determination to find the good in his injuries is a story of its own. Buckle up and prepare to be moved! THE MOUNTAIN WITHIN ME, directed by Polly Steele, is in UK cinemas from 23rd August, with Preview Q&A screenings from 19th August. For more information head to: mountain-within-me.film

Ben Fogle: Wilderness and Whales

In this week's episode of Cool Conversations, Kenton speaks to broadcaster and adventurer Ben Fogle whilst they are both sailing through Alaska. Ben has lived an extraordinary life, completing ambitious challenges and travelling extensively - he has visited over 160 countries around the world. He regularly finds himself visiting people who live off the beaten track and his passion for learning more about their lives and the wilderness around them is abundantly clear during this conversation. Kenton and Ben are on the lookout for whales whilst talking, and you will be treated to colourful descriptions of the landscape around them. Apologies for the sound quality from Alaska!

Ben and Georgie Ainslie: Making it Happen

Sir Ben Ainslie is a name many people will recognise. As Britain's most successful sailor, Ben won medals in five consecutive Olympic games from 1996, including Gold at the four games held between 2000 and 2012. Ben and his wife, Georgie, join Kenton today to talk about life after the Olympics. Ben and Georgie make a formidable partnership. Whilst Ben is Team Principal and CEO of Ineos Britannia - the team attempting to win the Americas Cup for Britain for the first time - Georgie has founded a start-up called Ainslie + Ainslie. Kenton discusses with them the importance of communication, the intensity of competition, the constant balance between work and family, leadership under pressure and, of course, their new night powder which is working wonders for Kenton's sleep... This episode is one not to be missed even if, like Kenton, you're more comfortable on dry land than on a boat. https://benainslie.com/

The Turner Twins: Willing to Experiment

This week, Kenton sits down with Ross and Hugo Turner, also known as The Turner Twins. The identical twins are adventurers who embark on a variety of different challenges, often linked to scientific studies due to sharing the same DNA. Kenton talks to them about their recent project driving the first fully electric 2-seater convertible MG from London to Shanghai, visiting 27 countries along the way. They also discuss the results of embarking on omnivore vs vegan diets, when they compared weighted exercises with bodyweight exercises, and when they compared 20 minutes of exercise to 40 minutes of exercise. Did they experience double the benefit from double the exercise? Hugo and Ross encourage everyone to be curious and willing to experiment. Their studies have sometimes led to unexpected results and this is a really interesting conversation.

Lukas Furtenbach: Recapping the Everest 2024 Season

Lukas is a mountaineer, geographer, adventurer, leader of countless expeditions and founder of Furtenbach Adventures. He has established Furtenbach Adventures as one of the premier operators on Everest, and he and Kenton reflect on the 2024 season together. Lukas was one of only three foreign operators granted permits to climb Everest from the North Side this year and he tells Kenton about the challenges he faced. Kenton and Lukas discuss the commercialism of mountaineering versus 'real' alpinism and they consider what the future of Everest might look like. This is a captivating conversation between two guides who both know Everest extremely well.

Tim Howell - Jumping from Great Heights

Tim Howell is an alpinist, a mountaineer, a climber and one of the world's leading wingsuit base-jumpers. Kenton sat down to talk to Tim at Everest Basecamp where he is based in pursuit of his next goal: claiming a record high-altitude wingsuit flight. Tim and Kenton talk about risk-taking: the importance of balancing risk and understanding the conditions in pursuit of goals. It is not unusual for Tim to say 'no' and climb back down mountains when the risk is simply too high. They discuss the value of community and how the support of others helps Tim to explore new jumps and push his own boundaries. We will let you know how he gets on with his record attempt!

Anna Hemmings: Striving for Excellence

Anna Hemmings is a phenomenal athlete who has been crowned World Champion six-times and competed at two Olympic games. Her chosen sport is marathon kayaking which requires high levels of strength, endurance, and skill (you will learn how difficult Kenton finds it to sit in a kayak, let alone race in one!). Anna's story is a remarkable one: she tells Kenton how she was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome at the peak of her career and had to overcome huge challenges to get back to the top of her sport. Since retiring from racing in 2008, Anna has built a successful career as a keynote speaker, leadership coach and training consultant supporting organisations to develop high-performing teams and achieve their goals.

James Peach: The Value of Time

This week, Kenton sits down with James Peach - a brand strategist by trade, who likes to add side-helpings of adventure to keep things interesting! James has worked for brands such as Innocent, Uber and Vinted and he shares some fascinating insights into their cultures and his experiences with these organisations. He talks about 'hustle', 'toe-stepping' and 'teetering on the edge of the red' amongst other things. Interestingly, James has a self-declared obsession with time, wanting to squeeze value out of every minute of every day. This has led to some great adventures including walking across Argentina, cycling around the world, and completing a tandom triathlon challenge. This episode is slightly longer than normal, but we hope you enjoy the rich discussion between Kenton and James.

This week, Kenton talks to Justin Wateridge who is MD of boutique travel agency, Steppes Travel, and extremely passionate about travel. He is also a heartfelt conservationist and he has run the London Marathon twice in a rhino suit, raising money for Save the Rhinos. Justin often combines his love of travel with adventure, and in July this year he and a friend are participating in the Yukon 1000, a tough multi-day canoe race down the Yukon river through wilderness, rapids and bear country. Kenton and Justin exchange travel stories and experiences throughout this conversation - enjoy!

Anna Wells: Find Your Passion

This week, Kenton chats to Anna Wells who, just two weeks ago, became the first female to ever complete a Winter Munro Round. Anna climbed all 282 Munros between 22nd December 2023 and 14th March 2024 - a feat only achieved by three others in history. Anna took three months leave from her day job and careered head first into this awe-inspiring challenge. She climbed mountains in all weathers, many of them on her own, and she clocked some very long days. At the end of the challenge she covered 155km and 11,000m of ascent in three days! Anna is super passionate about being in the mountains and she and Kenton really hit it off in this episode!

Allie Bailey: There is No Wall

This week, Kenton speaks to ultra-runner and endurance coach, Allie Bailey. Allie's story is not straight-forward. From the age of 14, she battled with addiction to alcohol, she was severely depressed, and she suffered numerous mental health crises. She started running in the midst of her addiction and completed many marathons and ultra-marathons whilst hungover or under the influence. This only served to strengthen her conviction that she didn't have a problem because she was a runner. Kenton and Allie discuss some of her memories from her darker days, her journey in running, and her fascination with how our brains work. Allie's honest, direct and straight-talking approach is refreshing and engaging. Her book, "There is No Wall" is out now.

Jono Sumner: Invest in Yourself

This week, Kenton chats to Jono Sumner who runs a very successful business with his brother and his best friend. The threesome co-founded LifeJacket Skin in 2020 after several of their friends, and Jono himself, were diagnosed with cancer. LifeJacket has a single vision: to halt the increase in skin cancer, which is the world's most common cancer even though it is 90% preventable. Their skin protection products range from sun cream and moisturiser to body wash and anti-chafe bars. Jono is super passionate about what he does and he gives a very compelling argument to 'invest in yourself', whether that be skin protection, nutrition, health or lifestyle. Kenton learnt a few things during this podcast recording, and we are sure that you will too!

Having led 38 expeditions to 8,000m peaks, Kari's focus has shifted from chasing high altitude summits to enjoying what he calls a 'rich life'. With his booming voice and infectious laugh, Kari really is one of the big characters of the Himalayan guiding world. Today Kari splits his time between Mendoza in Argentina, Nepal, and Switzerland where he seems to spend at least as much time rock climbing as he does guiding.

TALES FROM THE TRAILS: CLIMBING ACONCAGUA

A much overdue return to expedition live, this time on the slopes of the highest peak in the Americas. Standing at 6,961m, Aconcagua provides a fabulous introduction to high altitude climbing and is the focus of this weeks podcast. In this episode Kenton teams up with client and friend Richard Williams as they attempt this mountain of ancient volcanic origin. Follow their journey from the vibrant city of Mendoza, through the dusty plains to base camp and then higher towards the lofty summit. Their attempted ascent takes a bizarre twist as they try to navigate an ever-changing forecast that predicts wind speeds that would literally blow them off the mountain. This really is a must listen for anyone that has the ambition to dip their toe into the realm of expedition life.

Carla Molinaro: Finding Joy

This week, I speak to ultra-runner and current 50K World Champion, Carla Molinaro. Her energy, enthusiasm and joy for life come through in bucket loads during this episode and we defy any listener not to find it infectious! Carla grew up in the UK and now lives and trains in Cape Town. She holds the World Record for running from Lands End to John O’Groats (LEJOG) and became 50km road World Champion in November 2023. Talking to Carla was refreshing and uplifting – she has a joyful approach to training, she doesn’t use lots of gadgets or data, and she loves what she does. Carla set up her own business, SCY for Runners (Strength, Conditioning and Yoga for Runners), in 2020 and her online platform helps hundreds of runners to stay injury free, whilst building strength and flexibility. Dan James: No Plan Needed

This week we grab an opportunity. After climbing Pen-Y-Fan in Wales with photographer and community champion Dan James, we utilised the time on the drive home to interview this special individual. Today, Dan follows the path of ‘what feels best’ in the moment, pursuing what his heart tells him rather than what society deems best. What would appear to most as a carefree journey through life, actually means Dan is closer to those around him, generating bonds that have meaning and purpose. But it wasn’t always like this. Dan tells me about his time in the Royal Air Force working as a bomb disposal expert before a freak accident cut short his career and how this in turn helped him understand what’s important to him. Dan’s outlook and enthusiasm for life is infectious, I value his friendship and generosity with his time and feel privileged that we managed to record this episode together. The opportunistic nature of recording this episode does mean the sound quality isn’t as good as we would normally produce, but I hope you can forgive us.

Neil McNab: Life is for Living

Neil is one of the best all-round athletes I’ve ever met, innately talented across a spectrum of sports, although it was Snow Boarding where he made his name as the sport began to grow. In this episode we chart Neil’s career and what motivates him to constantly strive to be the very best version of himself. We also talk about longevity and the importance of putting the work in on yourself to maintain performance and health, and this links to one of Neil’s more recent passions, Yoga and the benefits he has found in this ancient practice. This is an episode that Kenton has wanted to record for a long time and we don’t think it disappoints!

Alastair Humphreys is an adventurer and author. In the past, he has embarked on huge adventures, such as cycling around the world and rowing the Atlantic, but he has found a new passion in micro-adventures and challenges closer to home. In this classic 'cool conversation', Al tells Kenton about walking across Spain and busking with a violin, sleeping on his local hill, and most recently exploring every inch of his local Ordnance Survey map over the course of a year. Al is an eccentric adventurer and this is a fascinating conversation.

Cool Conversations - Episode 100!

Steve McClure The mild-mannered janitor of British Climbing is really a full-blown Jedi. Steve has been at the very top of world climbing since his first ascent of 'Mutation' back in 1998, which may have been the hardest climb in the world at the time. Since then, this climbing CV is a catalogue of mind-boggling hard grades, both on sport and hard (dangerous) trad routes. In this episode, Steve explains how he uses his engineers brain to help squeeze the most from his own climbing as well as why climbing is possibly the most inclusive sport in the world. Alex Partridge: The Journey to Find Identity

Two world titles and Olympic medals don’t necessarily set you up for what comes next.  Following the London 2012 Olympics Alex stepped away from the sport that had defined him. He then spent time carving a ‘successful’ path in the city, only to find that his life lacked the purpose that he needed to live in a wholesome way. After years of trying to find a substitute for what elite sport gave, Alex found that even the sport he loved was masking a much more deeply rooted issue. In a brutally honest conversation of self-reflection and the search of one’s own identity, Alex gives an insight into how we can go some way to helping ourselves and those close to us.  Please note: there is some explicit language in this episode

How to climb the Matterhorn

There can be no doubt that the Matterhorn is the most iconic mountain in the world. It dominates the view from the Swiss village of Zermatt becoming a focus for Victorian era mountaineers vying for the first ascent.  Today over 150 years later it still represents a challenge for the ambitious Alpine climber. In this world of commercialism most people employ the help of a professional mountain guide but so did Edward Whymper on the first ascent back in 1865.  In this episode my friend and client Richard Williams and I talk about our own recent ascent of the mountain, how we approached it and what learnings do we take away for next time.  If you are interested in Alpine climbing, or even simply the outdoors this is compelling listening. Meet the brilliant Billi Bierling

Today, Billi Bierling is a renowned mountaineer. However, it wasn't always like that; in fact when she was growing up she almost felt slightly oppressed by the snowy peaks surrounding her hometown in Germany.   So what changed? Simple. A trip to Nepal in 1998, where she fell in love with the mountains and started high-altitude climbing. Since then, she has scaled six of the 14 8,000m-peaks, namely Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Manaslu (fore summit) and Broad Peak – the latter three she summited without the help of supplemental oxygen. In 2004, Billi started assisting the late Elizabeth Hawley with her work documenting expeditions to the Nepal Himalayas. Together with a team, Billi continues to interview expedition leaders for Liz Hawley's archive, which is now called 'The Himalayan Database'.   When she is not gallivanting around the high Himalayas or chasing expeditions in Kathmandu, Billi works for Swiss Humanitarian Aid as a communications expert, writes mountaineering articles for German and English-speaking magazines, translates or writes books and leads mountain treks and expeditions in Nepal and around the world. In short, she's a busy person, which makes the time she spent with Kenton recording this podcast all the more valuable.  - Sponsors - @lasportivauk @petzl_official @Arcteryxuk @landrover @lyonequipment @crudecoffeeroasters @evileye.eyewear @reality.maps @incoolcompany @bremontwatches @scallop.offical ... - Supporters - @panorama_lodge_namche @mission.uk @thecoolconversations @vidrate @Everesttoday #kentoncool #coolconversations #podcast #podcastersofinstagram #getitdone #wereinittogether #adventure #adventures #mountain #mountains #mountaineer #mountaineers #nepal #visitnepal

Hugo Mitchell-Heggs on HMS Oardacious

In January 2020, four Royal Navy Submariners became the first-ever Royal Navy team and the fastest military team in history to row any ocean. The team spent 37 days, 6 hours and 40 minutes battling across the North Atlantic to reach Nelsons Dockyard, Antigua. Their endeavours raised more than £100k for project HMS Oardacious which supports Mental Health and Wellbeing in the Submarine community. In this episode of Cool Conversations, Kenton talks to one of the 4 members of that Royal Navy crew, Hugo Mitchell-Heggs.  Hugo describes himself as "An enthusiastic individual constantly striving for excellence in all facets of both professional and personal life."
