How To Sleep: The Ultimate Guide To Getting The Sleep You Need: 1700s vs. 2022
The instruction manual for how to sleep in the 1700s vs. 2022 (partial satire). If you wanted to go to sleep in the 1700s, this is what you do: Lie down in bed Close your eyes. In 2022, this is what you’re told to do, and there are 24 steps: Avoid snacks or food 3-4 hours before bedtime No screens 3-4 hours before bedtime Cover all windows and lights in the bedroom Make the room slightly cooler Use the bed for sleep and sex only. Go to bed and wake up at same time every night Sleep for 7-8 hours No alcohol before bed 9. No coffee 6 hours before bedtime If you can’t fall asleep within 30 minutes, get out of bed and read in dim (incandescent) light until drowsy Take hot bath 20 minutes before bedtime Address any nasal congestion (air purifier for allergies, breathe right strips, nasal saline irrigation) Allergy-proof your bedroom (no rugs/carpeting, allergy sheets, and bedding, HEPA filter) Brush your teeth and wash your face Eat a high-fat meal 3-4 hours before bedtime. Consider the Keto or Carnivore diet with lots more saturated fat and proteins Exercise outdoors in the sunlight Get lots of sun exposure for vitamin D and near-infrared light for mitochondrial melatonin and its anti-oxidant properties Check to make sure your vitamin D level is above 60, and supplement as needed, along with K2-MK7 Do meditation/relaxation/stretching/deep breathing exercises to lower your stress levels Make sure you checked off all 20 items on this list so far Lie down in bed Don’t stress about not doing everything on this list, or not being able to fall asleep. 7 Good Reasons to Consider Surgery for Your Sleep Apnea
There comes a time when you have to say, "enough is enough." You've gone through 3 different masks, CPAP, APAP and 2 dental appliances. You also tried chin straps to keep your mouth closed along with your oral appliance and CPAP, all together. Some of you can't even keep CPAP on for more than one hour. And there are some of you that are able to use CPAP for 8 hours straight for 3 months and your machine is telling you that your AHI level is 0.1, but you still feel terrible. You've also tried every trouble shooting step mentioned on every sleep apnea support site. At a certain point, you have to consider the possibility of undergoing surgery.
Granted not everyone who struggles with CPAP has tried all this, but many of you have already gone through many, if not most of the above steps. Some people will be better candidates for surgery than others.
In this podcast, Kathy and I will go over 7 good reasons why you may want to consider surgery for your obstructive sleep apnea. Here's a quick summary along with the resources and links mentioned in the podcast:

The 7 Reasons Why I Like Oral Appliances for Sleep Apnea
Many people hate the idea of using a CPAP mask attached to a hose every night. Fortunately, a good alternative to this is a mandibular advancement devices (also called oral appliances) come in various models, but they all have one thing in common: The lower jaw is pushed forward against the upper jaw, moving your tongue forward, opening up your airway.
In this podcast episode, I will go over the 7 reasons why I like using mandibular advancement devices to treat obstructive sleep apnea.
1. No headgear or straps around your face.
2. It’s silent. CPAP 26 dB. 30 is a quiet whisper
3. It’s small and convenient
4. More dentists are available to make these devices, and are usually covered through most major insurances.

ADHD and other behavioral problems are rampant today with millions of children on prescription medications with or without psychotherapy. As I've stated in the past, a significant number of these children have a treatable sleep-breathing problem, which goes undiagnosed. I was alerted to watch this video about a mother’s excruciatingly painful journey to help her son, Connor, who was labeled with a condition called oppositional defiant disorder.
In this episode I'm honored to have as our guest Ms. Valerie Deegan, Connor’s mother. We’re going to talk about what she had to go through to get her son treated appropriately without medications.
