Quick to Listen: Rooted in the Church

In this first Quick to Listen episode, we discuss how biblical counseling can take place in a variety of contexts but still remain rooted in the church. We are joined by Rebekah Hannah, President and CEO of Anchored Hope, Paul Tautges, Pastor of Cornerstone Church in Cleveland, OH, and Alasdair Groves, Executive Director of the Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation.   Quick to Listen episodes draw inspiration from James 1:19, in which we are encouraged to be quick to listen and slow to speak. Our hope is to demonstrate Christlike love and communication that honors God and blesses His people, even when we don’t see all things identically.  FROM OUR SPONSORS: Learn more about the new Southern Seminary MDiv at sbts.edu/newmdiv. Stand for Biblical Counseling

This episode of 15:14 is unique. Our guest, Steve Viars, joins us to inform you and ask for your help regarding a direct attack against biblical counseling in West Lafayette, Indiana. Faith Church in Lafayette is an historic church in the modern biblical counseling movement. One of their campuses is in West Lafayette and would come under the jurisdiction of Ordinance 31-21. This ordinance claims to ban “Conversion Therapy” but expands the definition of this therapy beyond its original meaning and includes any attempt at altering a person’s sexual expression/identity/preference/desires/practice in any way, even if the person is seeking help to change. In addition, this ordinance targets non-licenced counselors with fines of $1,000/day for violating this ordinance.  LGBTQ advocates have been working to ban all attempts to help anyone turn away from the lifestyle they wish to promote and live in accordance with God’s design for human sexuality. This map shows the advancement of the LGBTQ movement to accomplish its goal on this particular issue.  Individuals and churches in the area started a non-profit organization called Lafayette Citizens for Freedom. You can find out more about the organization and how you can support their efforts at the website freedomlafayette.org.  In this episode, Dr. Viars shares how this legislation came to be, how Faith, and others have responded, and how you can learn from their example to address similar legislation in your community.  Previous episodes with Steve Viars: Loving Your Community Steve Viars Support 15:14 – A Podcast of the Biblical Counseling Coalition today at biblicalcounselingcoalition.org/donate.

Soul Care for Missionaries

In this episode of 15:14 we are joined by BCC Council Member Dr. Andrew Rogers who serves as the Executive Director for Overseas Instruction in Counseling (OIC) and Sara Shannon the OIC Missionary Soul Care Coordinator. They discuss the need missionaries have for soul care in their own lives. This aspect of support to missionaries is often overlooked and we want that to change. There are many ways this care can be provided: through sending churches, through agency member care, or through individual biblical counselors connecting with missionaries. OIC is helping to coordinate a network of biblical counselors who donate time to provide soul care to missionaries overseas. We encourage you to prayerfully consider joining this network.
