Overcoming Trauma Reactions in Relationships

In this Language of Love Session, we continue our conversation with Ken and Marla, a couple who has been going through some sexual struggles, and we really got into the nitty-gritty of how stress and trauma can mess with your love life. Ken's been feeling super stressed and it's been hitting their intimacy hard. He's distracted, tired, and just not in the mood, which has been causing some tension between them. Marla, on her end, is experiencing PTSD symptoms in response to Ken’s anger, even though it’s not directed at her. This is not at all uncommon for those with a trauma background. But the dynamic is making her pull away and shut down emotionally. It's like they're stuck in this loop where they just keep triggering each other. So, I suggest they try somatic experiencing therapy. It's a game-changer for understanding and dealing with trauma responses. And one big thing I emphasized was the need to separate their actions from their reactions. It's not easy, but it's so important for healing and moving forward together. I'm confident that this session will not only provide you with a deeper understanding of the complexities of trauma in intimate relationships but also arm you with practical guidance to face similar challenges head-on. Remember to check out my recommended books The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma and Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma and let's keep growing together. Keep pushing forward, and don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Here's to healing and growing stronger together! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Help, I’m Catching Feels…

Friends with benefits…it’s common in our dating vernacular now. A friendship where sex happens and no commitment beyond friendship. It can seem modern and cool and a great idea.  But I find in most cases, one person is benefiting while the other person is (probably secretly) hoping it’ll turn into more.   On this Language of Love Bite I discuss the hidden costs of being a friend with benefits and why it may not be as beneficial as it appears to be on the surface. Intimacy is one of life’s most pleasurable experiences and one we all deserve. But when the clothes come off, the lines can often become blurred. There are so many things to consider before embarking on this kind of relationship journey … So let's talk about it! How to Heal the Father Wound

Fathers play such an important role in the life of all children, but especially their daughters. Whether he knows it or not, how a father treats his daughter determines if she’s fortified and ready to take on the world, or carrying unhealed wounds affecting all areas of her life as an adult. A fathers’ neglect, criticism, indifference or abandonment can also create trauma that all too often goes unaddressed. I’ll also cover the signs of a father wound, and how you can recognize them. Lastly, I’ll help you begin walking down the path toward healing, leading to you becoming the best version of yourself! Ready, Willing, but Unable

Sex … it gets easy with marriage, right? In a perfect world, this is how things work, but our world is far from perfect, and those imperfections often follow us into the bedroom. As much as we’d like to think otherwise, when you “put a ring on it” you won’t necessarily spontaneously release any predisposed inhibitions you have around sex. This week, our Language of Love Session dives into this topic with a listener who is ready, willing, but unable to enjoy sex with her husband due to core inhibitions she didn’t realize she was still carrying. I help her get to the root of her aversion to being sexual and share insights and tools that will get her and her sex life back on track.  In today’s episode you will learn: How to find the missing piece of your sex life.  How to come back to your body and stay there for true intimacy and pleasure. When and how outside help can make all the difference Ways to make intimacy feel safe. How to build a better sex life without making sex feel like work.  Sex is one of the most pleasurable experiences life has to offer. If you find yourself stranded at a bedroom impasse, the good news is that help is available.  PUT IN THE TAIL THAT IS ALWAYS HERE ABOUT “if you have questions, listen to the show, website etc” that is usually here?  Learn more about your ad choices. Coming Back to Life with Stephanie Arnold

On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” I sit down with Stephanie Arnold. Stephanie has an incredibly powerful story which she shared in her international bestseller, “37 Seconds: Dying Revealed Heaven’s Help—A Mother’s Journey.” The title of the book comes from Stephanie’s real-life experience in which she died for 37 seconds. That’s right: She died and came back to life, and what she learned in those 37 seconds is so unforgettably powerful. I am so honored to speak with her today and learn what dying taught her, and I think you will find it to be so uplifting and informative. You will learn about: • The truth about your ‘sixth sense’ and how it can save your life • What scientists, medical experts, and philosophers have learned from studying clinical death (a.k.a. ‘near-death experiences’) • Stephanie’s premonition that she was going to die, and how she learned to advocate for herself after her fears were not taken seriously by her medical team • What Stephanie saw and heard when she died • How you can key into your sixth sense and tap into your divine intuition Stephanie’s story is so important for all of us to hear, especially those of us who have trusting our own truths and advocating for own safety. Learning how to apply this wisdom may end up literally saving your own life, but also help you learn how to deeply connect with the powerful source within you and make your days more meaningful and magical. Cheryl Strayed Talks about Her "Inner Terrible Someone" And Learning to Love Fear

I am so excited about today’s episode! I finally got to sit down and interview Cheryl Strayed, one of my favorite authors and a true inspiration for so many. Cheryl, of course, is the NYT best-selling author of “Wild,” which was later made into a beautiful Oscar-nominated movie. Cheryl and I have known each other for years, and I have always been a massive fan of her work. Cheryl has a hilarious anecdote about the first time we met, which you will have to listen to the episode to hear, but let me just say, it ends with Cheryl asking me: “Laura, do I make you sick?” HA! Not at all, girl. This led us to talking about your “ITS”! This is Cheryl’s name for your “inner terrible someone,” that voice in your head that always offers up the cruelest self-criticism and narrates the worst possible version of scenarios. Sadly, we all have that “inner terrible someone” who is quick to heap on the shame, doubt, fear and self-loathing that keeps us from accessing our true worthiness and our true mission here. On this episode you will learn: • How Cheryl silences her inner critic when she’s writing and creating, and how other creative folks can use her wisdom to welcome their inner critics without fear • How to access the wise, true, loving voice inside of yourself (yes, I promise, it is there! And it is longing to be heard and listened to by you) • How we can heal from our negative thoughts while realizing that our “inner terrible someone” can also be a catalyst for growth and curiosity about ourselves • How you can learn to love fear instead of repelling it, and how our “ITS” are a valuable way to connect with other people Take a listen to this very special episode and let me know what you think! Solano is also the author of “Man Enough: Undefining My Masculinity,” an engaging and daring exploration into what it means to be a ‘man’ in today’s society, and how we are failing boys and men in many ways. On this episode, you will learn: • Why the term ‘toxic masculinity’ can be harmful • How the definition of manhood has shifted in the last few decades, leaving many men struggling to find role models or clear examples of the kind of man they want to be • How dangerous gender roles can be when it comes to young boys who are encouraged to never cry or ask for help • How we can create gender equality without demonizing men or masculinity • How you can find your own definition for masculinity • Why women seem to be attracted to a certain type of masculinity, and how we can reconfigure our desires so that we don’t always go for the ‘bad boys’ Check out Justin Baldoni’s Man Enough book here, and keep an eye out for his new guide for middle-schoolers which will be published soon!
