244. Rex Elliott — Committed to Impact: Transforming Adversities into Opportunities [Encore Edition]

When you encounter a lawyer committed to advocating for the underprivileged with unwavering determination, you know you've found someone truly exceptional. Rex Elliott embodies that dedication. His life's mission revolves around assisting those deprived of opportunities, relentlessly pursuing cases others shy away from — and that resolve has defined his remarkable success. In this episode of The Game Changing Attorney Podcast, Rex joins Michael to explore: Strategies for harnessing media attention in high-profile cases The profound lessons gleaned from setbacks rather than triumphs The transformative potential of attorneys to effect positive change in society ---- Show Notes: 07:20 – Take a new perspective: I’ve learned many lessons over the years thanks to the things that have happened to me, both good and bad. During the low moments, I've tried to see through that particular problem and figure out why it was that that was happening to me at the time. If you're not listening and observing those kinds of things, you'll miss them. 09:56 – A game changing case: Willie Gladdens was on death row for killing his white girlfriend’s former white ex-boyfriend out of self-defense. At the time, I was at a big firm, and our job was to get him off of death row — and we did that. He even managed to get out of prison and live a productive life later on. That’s when I felt for the first time that my license to practice law was being used in the way that God intended me to use it. I was helping another person who needed it the most. 14:44 – Leverage the media: The media can be a powerful partner with you in terms of getting your message out. I’ve always used the media as a member of our team, and if you’re good to them and never misstate things to them, they will be powerful partners for you.  19:02 – Putting an end to hazing: There are 18- to 22-year-old kids living within a system that was created for them by adults. We need to focus on the national organizations and the universities to put a stop to this. We have had a hazing death on a college campus in this country every single year since 1959, and it's become my mission to do everything I can to end hazing altogether. 23:25 – Canceling the Greek system’s pledge programs: They're antiquated, they're archaic, and there's absolutely no purpose for a pledge program anymore. That's where all these deaths and injuries are occurring because there's an imbalance of power. I think we need to eliminate pledge programs in general. One more death on a college campus in this country is too much. ---- Links & Resources Denison University Syracuse University Sullivan & Cromwell National Football League Willie Gladdens Donovan Lewis Ben Crump Stone Foltz Collin Wiant Bowling Green University Entrepreneurs’ Organization  ---- Listening to this episode but want to watch it? 243. AMMA — Success Without Safety Nets: The Entrepreneurial Journey

In a world where success is far from guaranteed, how do you navigate the path of uncertainty toward your goals? In this thought-provoking episode of The Game Changing Attorney Podcast, Michael and Jessica Mogill delve into the raw truths of business ownership and the mindset required to succeed. Join us as we explore: How to guarantee you’ll never achieve your goals Why the most valuable lessons are learned through experience and failure The key difference between ambition and commitment ---- Show Notes: 06:05 – The brutal truth: Business is the hardest thing you will ever do. I try to discourage people from entrepreneurship because they watch a lot of Shark Tank and they think that they're all going to make millions of dollars. The reality of it is that the majority of them will never do that 07:30 – Risk vs. reward: If you look at the statistics, there's a greater chance that you won't succeed than there's the chance that you will succeed — especially if you have aspirational goals.  11:00 – Everyone’s replaceable: There are 8 billion people on this planet. By the way, whoever you believe was a rock star, you may find another one who's even better — and you probably will, because your standards change and evolve. There are graveyards full of ‘irreplaceable’ people. 18:01 – Commitment’s silent sacrifices: The results that you see from the people you admire is work that's done in the shadows. That's work that you don't see on social media. 19:23 – B*tch or beast: The majority of businesses do not grow to seven figures or eight figures. You want to know why that is? Because the majority of people are not willing to do what it takes. You’ve got to decide which one you are: b*tch or beast? I don't know what else to tell you. Not everyone is built for this. ---- Links & Resources Joe Rogan Podcast Huberman Lab Podcast Shark Tank TikTok Fugazi Crisp Coach Netflix  ---- Listening to this episode but want to watch it? 181. Best of Season 4: Q2

Transformational insights. Groundbreaking ideas. Unforgettable conversations. This is just a small sampling of the impact you can expect when you tune into The Game Changing Attorney Podcast — and this show continues raising the bar every time. In this electrifying look back at our top moments from 2023’s second quarter, we’ll revisit powerful takeaways from: Alex Hormozi: Founder & Managing Partner of Acquisition.com Joe De Sena: Founder & CEO of Spartan Daryl Gray: Partner at Wright Gray Trial Lawyers Adam Alter: New York Times Best-Selling Author --- Show Notes: Alex Hormozi The one trait all great leaders have in common. “If you have humility, you can do a lot. If somebody's humbled and they can accept feedback, then they can change. It's very difficult to do, because if someone doesn't have humility, then it means that whoever they are on day one has to be the person that they need to be at day 1000. If they can't admit there’s a deficit that they can't improve, they’re already screwed. So humility is by far the biggest thing when it comes to being a successful founder. Beyond that, they have to have drive and determination — their fuel.” Joe De Sena An easier life is not a happier life. “We have more and more of these comforts that do make our lives easier. At the same time, one could also argue that as a society we've never been more unhappy. There have never been greater instances of anxiety and depression and all these things, and yet you have more comforts than ever. It almost seems like it's an innate part of the human condition to almost need a degree of like earned dopamine.” Daryl Gray Servant leadership is the key to success. “I'm always looking to be a champion and a servant to others. That's all I do. That's my whole business model. I think the money is a byproduct of doing that. You're going to make money. This is what, a $400 billion industry? A lot of people don't understand how much money floats around the legal industry. Legal services is a huge, huge industry compared to oil and gas and insurance and tech — all these industries that we know about. So the money is there. But the thing that sets you apart — and I think the thing that's going always survive, whether it be the rise of AI, whether it be other changes like hedge funds coming in and all of this stuff, which everybody's concerned about now — you have to keep your finger on the pulse of what a servant should be doing for the people that need your help the most and that's John every day. If you're not looking at it from that standpoint, then you're not going to create a long-lasting, survivable business model.” Adam Alter Embrace the challenge. “Broadly speaking, there are two ways to think of something that's hard. One way is to do what is, I think, human instinct and to see it as a threat. It's nice to do things that are easy. There's a reason we spend hours and hours watching Netflix and scrolling through social media platforms and eight hours a day on our phones and things like that. It's easy, and a lot of life feels hard and so we seek out the easy. And that makes total sense from a human energy apportionment perspective. I understand why people do that, and I do the same to an extent. But it's the things that are hard that are beneficial — not just now, but in the very long run. I think they make us stronger. We know that. We've talked about that. They make us more resilient in the face of challenges that might come up later on.” --- Links & Resources: Episode 158 — Alex Hormozi — The Power of Humility in Achieving Entrepreneurial Success Episode 161 — Joe De Sena — The Spartan Mindset: Embracing Discomfort and Unleashing Mental Toughness Episode 167 — Daryl Gray — The Power of Authentic Advocacy: Transforming Lives and Uniting Communities Episode 171 — Adam Alter — Anatomy of a Breakthrough: How to Get Unstuck When It Matters Most
