106. Over-functioning Parents
Being a parent is one of the many things in life that doesnโt come with an instruction manual. So naturally anyone who decides to become a parent is bound to make mistakes with the kids at some point. I don't have kids, but I have to imagine that as a parent, you're making mistakes all the time. โ I mean, as a human, we're making mistakes all the time so I'm sure there's no difference. One of the most detrimental mistakes that I've seen countless times and also experienced myself is what some people might call over-functioning for oneโs children.Over-functioning is basically doing things for your children that they can do for themselves. Some people say they do it out of love, others do it out of fear, but at the end of the day, constantly doing things for people that they can do for themselves isn't always a simple act of kindness. Sometimes you can train those people to be so dependent on you that they can't do anything for themselves. And that's not good for anyone. So in today's episode, we're going to listen to a short clip from a conversation about this topic and I'll be here to explain all the nouns, verbs, and adjectives and then Iโll leave you with something to think about.-If you love this podcast and want to show some support, subscribe on Patreon! ๐ https://patreon.com/realenglishradioJoin my Discord ๐ https://discord.gg/H53r7JKeqtDownload my e-book Mastering English with Podcasts ๐ https://rb.gy/kgh1oContact me any time ๐ https://www.tonykaizen.com/ Hosted on Acast. 97. Your Teacher Is Lying to You
There are many great English teachers out there, but the sad truth is that some are just looking to profit off your ignorance and insecurity. Instead of providing the tools you need to reach your goal, they sell you the dream of English fluency without effort. All you have to do is keep watching their videos and buy their overpriced courses.Itโs troubling that many language teachers spend little to no time talking about what languages are actually used for: communication. As a result, many English learners obsess over grammar, accents, and unnatural vocabulary, believing these are the keys to becoming great communicators. They've been misled into thinking that staying in their comfort zones and avoiding the truth is the most effective path to fluency. This couldn't be further from the truth. In this episode, I want to simplify things for all English learners seeking practical solutions that won't waste their time or break the bank. If you know me, then you know that I have an extremely dark sense of humor and I love stand up comedy. As a language learner, being able to understand jokes and cultural humor is a sign that youโve reached a relatively advanced level because stand up comedy is heavily influenced by culture. The world we live in is very different from the world that Gen X-ers and Baby Boomers grew up in, and thus, the things we value and work for have changed substantially. In the past, people worked hard in the pursuit of owning their own homes, raising families, and retiring with enough money to enjoy their old age. But these days, the desire to own a home and raise children is lower than ever before. #61 - The Internet Sucks Now... Here's Why
Have you ever wondered why so many people stopped using Facebook?Have you ever wondered how exactly Amazon became the first website you think of when you want to buy something online?Have you ever wondered why so many content creators who had built massive followings on YouTube and Instagram suddenly rushed to TikTok back in 2020?Have you ever wondered why your experience on all of these platforms somehow gets worse and worse overtime? You might say that too many old people started using Facebook so all of the young people left. You might say that Amazon is just more convenient than any other online retailer. You might say that TikTokโs algorithms are simply better and more effective than the ones on YouTube and Instagram. And you might say that your online experience gets worse because there are too many ads and too many creators making the same trash content. But is it really that simple? What if there was a predictable pattern that almost every online platform followed in the search for higher profits market control? What if you could take a look behind the curtain and see how these online platforms systematically kill competition and creativityโฆ while forcing buyers and sellers, creators and consumers to participate in their little game of monopoly?Well, in this episode, Iโm going to read a brilliant article written by the author and journalist Cory Doctorow about the predictable ways that every online platform we know of eventually turns to shit.Discover more of Coryโs work:https://twitter.com/doctorowhttps://pluralistic.net/For access to PDF vocabulary guides, bonus podcast episodes and our private conversation group on Discord, join our community!๐ https://www.realenglishradio.com/membershipDownload my e-book Mastering English with Podcasts ๐ https://rb.gy/kgh1oFind me on social media!https://bio.link/tonykaizen Subscribe on Patreon to get bonus podcast episodes! #59 - The Looking Glass Self
The concept of the "looking glass self" is central to the field of sociology, particularly symbolic interactionism. Coined by Charles Horton Cooley in his work "Human Nature and the Social Order" (1902), the term captures the idea that our self-concept and self-worth are heavily influenced by how we perceive others to perceive us. #50 - The Harsh Reality of Making Life Decisions
I donโt know about you, but Iโve never taken a class on decision-making. My parents never sat me down and taught me how to think deeply about the consequences of my actions. When it comes to making life choices, the only teacher Iโve ever had was life itself. Iโve made decisions, those decisions have had consequences, and then Iโve analyzed those consequences with the hopes that Iโll be able to make even better decisions in the future. But Iโm a human beingโฆ and naturally, I want to feel a sense of certainty that the decisions I make will lead to the outcomes I desire. โ And Iโm sure youโre no different. How do I know if Iโm making the right decision? How do I know if I should be persistent and keep moving toward my goal, or just quit and find something else to do?How do I know if Iโm using my time in the best way possible? These are questions that all of us have asked or will ask ourselves at some point in life. And the harsh reality is that in most cases, the only person who can answer these question for us is the person we see in the mirror every morning. But still, we continue to look to others for guidance, advice, and answers. โ And in todayโs episode, Iโm gonna play a clip of a young lady looking for advice on how to know if sheโs on the right path in life. โ And the entrepreneur and content creator, Gary Vaynerchuk is going to share a perspective that I believe could help you to find some direction in your life as well. For access to bonus podcast episodes and our private conversation group on Discord, subscribe on Patreon!๐ https://patreon.com/realenglishradioFind me on social media!TikTok: @tonykaizenInstagram: @tonykaizenTwitter: @tonykaizenYouTube: @tonykaizen Subscribe on Patreon to get bonus podcast episodes! #43 - The Biggest Lie about Relationships
From a very young age we are told countless lies about the purpose of committed relationships, how those relationships are developed, and what it takes to maintain them overtime. It's only as we get older and start trying to develop our own relationships that we actually realize relationships are not what we read about in fairytales, or see in movies or on social media.Unfortunately, many of us never had anyone to teach us about how committed relationships work and so we were forced to learn through sheer observation. However, many of us we never taught to observe properly so we end up misinterpreting many other things that we see and hear. What's the biggest misconception about committed relationships today? What is it that so many of us get wrong when it comes to choosing a partner, developing a relationship, and setting expectations of that relationship? In today's episode of real English radio, weโre gonna listen to a clip from a conversation between Brenรฉ Brown and Tim Ferris about what Brenรฉ believes to be the biggest lie weโre told about relationships and the change in thinking we all need to make if we want to sustain a healthy partnership with someone.Support this podcast with a monthly subscription and get access to bonus podcast episodes, advanced PDF vocabulary guides, and our private conversation group on Discord! ๐ https://patreon.com/realenglishradioFind me on social media!TikTok: @tonykaizenInstagram: @tonykaizenTwitter: @tonykaizen Subscribe on Patreon to get bonus podcast episodes! #18 - The Stupid Things You're Doing to Ruin Conversations
Being a great English speaker involves a lot more than memorizing nouns, verbs, and adjectives. You must learn to communicate. In my opinion, communication skills are one of the least discussed topics when it comes to learning a foreign language when they're actually the most important piece of the puzzle. In this episode, I'll tell you about 5 simple things you should stop doing if you want to see an immediate improvement in the way you communicate with others.Support this podcast with a monthly subscription and receive bonus podcast episodes, advanced vocabulary guides, and early access to all new episodes! ๐ https://tonykaizen.com/rerPrivate English Lessons ๐ https://tonykaizen.com/classFind me on social media!TikTok: @englishwithkaizenInstagram: @englishwithkaizenTwitter: @tonykaizen Subscribe on Patreon to get bonus podcast episodes! #17 - The US Government Wants to Ban TikTok (Part 1)
On March 23, 2023, the CEO of TikTok, Shou Zi Chew was asked to appear before the US congress and answer questions regarding TikTokโs invasive features, possible ties to the Chinese government, and extremely negative effects the app is having on peopleโs mental health.According to the members of congress, this meeting would have been Mr. Chewโs opportunity to prove that TikTok can be trusted by the American people and that it shouldnโt be banned in the US. However, the congressional hearing ended up being a brutal 5 hours of what some people would call foolish questioning that left many of us thinking that TikTok will in fact be banned in the United States simply because the people who would enact this ban are afraid of something they clearly donโt understand. So in this episode and the next one, weโre gonna be diving deeper into this situation and helping you learn much more about:The English languageAmerican culture & politicsHow to listen attentively and understand the difference between what someone says and what they meanWhat the banning of TikTok in The States could mean for people like you and meSupport this podcast with a monthly subscription and receive bonus podcast episodes, advanced vocabulary guides, and early access to all new episodes! ๐ https://tonykaizen.com/rerPrivate English Lessons ๐ https://tonykaizen.com/classFind me on social media!TikTok: @englishwithkaizenInstagram: @englishwithkaizenTwitter: @tonykaizen Subscribe on Patreon to get bonus podcast episodes! #16 - Stoicism: How to Liberate Yourself from Fear
Many of us (especially in the West) have been conditioned to believe that the most important thing in life is happiness, but I completely disagree with this idea. Happiness is simply a by-product of living properly and spending time doing things that are truly meaningful.Pursuing whatโs truly meaningful often requires us to step out of our comfort zones and overcome our fear of the unknown. And with the help of Dr. Jordan B. Peterson and Dr. Michael Sugrue, Iโll explain how a stoic mindset enables you to stand strong in the face of uncertainty and grow into a fully-realized (and happy) individual.Support this podcast with a monthly subscription and receive bonus podcast episodes, advanced vocabulary guides, and early access to all new episodes! ๐ https://tonykaizen.com/rerPrivate English Lessons ๐ https://tonykaizen.com/classFind me on social media!TikTok: @englishwithkaizenInstagram: @englishwithkaizenTwitter: @tonykaizen Subscribe on Patreon to get bonus podcast episodes!
