As the deputies proceed with the King's trial, a radical proposal upends the proceedings. Leading Girondins suggest "the appeal to the people", a national referendum to determine the King's fate. Rejected by the Mountain, both factions denounce the other as they seek to win the support of the Plain. The Paris Parlement was ridiculed by the public for attempting to ensure the nobility dominated the body, while Necker struggled to grapple with the violent situation he faced as he determined how the Estates-General should be constituted.
