TABLE

Who sits on your table of life? And who are you when you take the seat of a guest in the life of your friends? These are the question we ask on this episode of Fags in Fendi, as we expound on the metaphor of the table we explored in earlier episodes.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

COMMUNITY

What does community mean to you? And how can we stand in for each other as a community? While we continue to seek allies to support our cause as queer people and queer BIPOC, we must also acknowledge that we have to be allies for each other. In this episode we discuss what it means to find comfort with each other, and how we can support each other through the things of life.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

BUSINESS

Choosing to be a person in business is a challenge at the best of times. Add to that the element of queerness, and of being BIPOC, and there you have an extra layer of hustle in the game.In this episode we discuss, honestly and frankly, the challenges of choosing to be a queer BIPOC entrepreneur, and the elation that comes with tackling the obstacles to come out the other side, winning!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

LOVE

We live in a world that tells us that we should seek love and reject love all at the same time. The duality of the message around relationships has created an interesting generation of people, seeking companionship and independence at the same time. Notions of relationships within queerness are fiercely debated - on one hand some people believe we should rebut perceived heteronormative relationships, rooted in ideals like monogamy and marriage, while others believe that the right to be married and have monogamous queer relationships accepted is the standard we should aspire too. There are also those who seek open relationships, even within marriage, and some who are committed to the idea of polyamory. By no means are these the only discussions, but one thing is for sure - we are in a world in need of love, and we are finding our own ways to it. In this episode, we talk about love, finding love, being open to love, and what it means to be a single queer man in Sydney. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

ENERGY

We often hear discussions through various forums about “protecting your energy”. But what does that practically look like? Some say it means curating your friend circle to the absolute detail, and associating only with those “like” you. Others say it’s about having an open personal energy, to attract what would be yours anyway. In this episode we dive deep into the nuances of relationships, and how protecting your energy means being open, but also being aware. Pull up a seat at our table, and join the conversation. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

BEAUTY

Let’s get down and talk about what beauty looks like in the queer world. How do we define beauty? And how much of our understanding of what is beautiful finds itself in eurocentricity?  Queer BIPOC find ourselves confronted by exclusionary ideas of beauty, and often struggle to find community within broader LGBTIQ+ spaces. This episode is a discussion on beauty, on loving yourself, and on decolonising ideas that keep us bound in unhealthy patterns. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

REPRESENTATION

To see ourselves reflected in popular culture, is to see ourselves centred in the world. Very often queer people of colour are “othered” from childhood - first as being a person of colour or migrant in white majority spaces, then as being at odds with the world because of our queer experience with gender and/or sexual orientation.  Our presence in the psyche of the majority is bookmarked by moments, not many as significant as the release of Vogue by Madonna on the 27th of March 1990, which brought the, until then, underground world of queer people of colour, the Ballroom, into the lexicon of popular culture. On the 29th of July 2022, we had another moment, the realise of Beyoncé’s Renaissance Act I - a complete celebration of who we are as a people.  In this episode we talk about the importance of representation, and what it means to be seen, and heard in a world that often feels like it would rather forget us. All discussed with humour, and a call to action! Be loud darlings!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

MANLY

We interrupt our regular programming to discuss in detail (from our lens) the Manly Sea Eagles drama that has been in the media recently. For those of you not familiar with the incident, in short - the Manly Sea Eagles management decided to include a rainbow stripe on their jerseys for a pride game. 7 players decided they would not wear the jersey for cultural and religious reasons. The incident raises a lot of questions related to queerness in sport, and the influence and impact of colonial ideas of queerness and the long term impact on indigenous people and people of colour. We also discuss what it means to be children of migrant parents, and the impact of living between two worlds, and sometimes, the present and the past. In this episode we discuss the incident, and our various reflections around it. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

CULTURE

Culture is the collective expression of a community. But what happens at the intersectionality of queer culture and your culture of birth? What happens when, as migrants, your culture becomes an immovable, stagnant identity, that clings to its point of origin?Queer people have often felt a sense of rejection from their culture of birth, and in doing so have created and become a part of a vibrant, supportive culture, birthed from and through the community. In this episode we discuss this complex relationship we have to the two cultures of our lives as queer people of colour, and migrants to Australia, and how we navigate the space between them.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

GAY

It is an undeniable reality that to be queer in the face of heteronormativity is to be brave. Being a person of colour adds a layer of difficulty to expressing queerness, not just in our own communities, but to society at large.  After watching the hit Netflix show Heartstopper (based on the YA webtoon and graphic novels of the same name by Alice Oseman), we were both overtaken by a sense of nostalgia for something we never had, and in doing so came to explore our journeys towards living as open and proud queer men.  This episode explores the intersectional identities of being BIPOC, queer, a migrant, and Australian, in a way designed to educate rather than agitate.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
