Yet in all those places, there is suffering and persecution on an alarming scale. At our seminar we call for prayer for those who perpetrate cruelty and violence against Christian brothers and sisters. Together we petition the Lord to bless our persecuted brothers and sisters and unite the global church, east and west, in the one body of Christ Jesus, to the glory of God. Our special guest speakers are Bob Fu, President of China Aid and Eric Foley, CEO of Voice of the Martyrs Korea. Release International’s Persecution Trends 2022 report highlights West Africa as a hotspot for Christian persecution over the coming year. Extremists are gaining ground in the Sahel region of sub-Saharan Africa. Christians are being targeted in bombings, killings, kidnappings and school attacks. Thousands have been killed or displaced. Release International, voice of persecuted Christians, will be examining the situation for our brothers and sisters in Christ in Burkina Faso, Eritrea, Nigeria and Sudan, with guest speakers from the church on the ground. Speakers include: Petr Jasek, ICA Global Ambassador, former prisoner of faith (Sudan); Dr Berhane Asmelash (Release Eritrea) and Dr Susanna (Burkina Faso).

In parts of northern Nigeria, religious sectarianism has divided society, giving rise to deep distrust and occasional violence. Reconciliation involves formulating a way to co-exist and to share their society. Reconciliation is not easy; but is the ministry that Christ has entrusted to his followers. Using scripture and a concrete case study from northern Nigeria, the seminar will illustrate how reconciliation can bring about conflict transformation, even in a seemingly intractable situation. Led by Revd Yunusa Sabo Nmadu, General Secretary of The Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) and CEO of CSW Nigeria.

Dr Amy Orr-Ewing and Dr Kosta Milkov consider reconciliation, what it should truly look like and what apologetic we can helpfully use with those in our sphere of influence. Kosta Milkov reflects both on early Christian and contemporary thinkers to cause us to consider our response to the struggles we all face in times of conflict. The talk is corroborated by examples from Kosta’s engagement in reconciliation work during the wars in former Yugoslavia and various refugee crises and conflicts in the Balkans. Dr Amy Orr-Ewing is Co-Director of the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics and Dr Kosta Milkov is Director of the Balkan Institute for Faith and Culture.

The Trauma Healing programme offers a Bible-based approach for churches, faith groups, community organisations, and prison chaplains to begin addressing the trauma experienced by individuals, communities and churches. As the wounds are healed inside, the world changes outside. Listen to how Bible-based trauma healing is bringing hope and reconciliation to individuals, families and communities. Chaired by Elizabeth Oldfield, Director of Theos, this panel discussion includes Pastor Nims Obunge, Pastor of Freedoms Ark and CEO of the Peace Alliance, Revd Dr Helen Paynter, Director of the Centre for the Study of Bible and Violence at Bristol Baptist College, and Chris Auckland, Bible Society’s lead on Trauma Healing.
