Audio Archive - URGH! - A Live Selection
Hosted by Eddie. I recently acquired an album I had wanted for a long time. Urgh! A music War is a double album based on a 1982 film of the same name. (one of the best live albums ever!) and John Cale's Sabotage/Live. Other bands featured include: The Cramps, The Go-Gos, Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark, Steel Pulse, Gary Numan, John Otway, Joan Jett and Athletico Spizz '80.

Audio Archive - It Came From The Coop
Hosted by Eddie and Glen. A few months ago I was gifted a couple of boxes of records rescued from a pigeon coop in the Waikato. Among them was a pile of 7" singles, most of which were in pretty rough shape so I set them aside. When I came to clean them up I found that I had a nice selection of songs, enough for a show in fact. So in the first half of the show we have an eclectic selection including Crystal Gayle, Queen and the mighty Prince Tui Teka, while the second half showcases Herbs and no less than four Bob Marley and the Wailers discs! We conclude the show with some Thunderbirds. Cheers Arthur and thanks!

After becoming paralysed as the result of a fall he was forced to reinvent himself as one of the more original musical artists that the UK produced in the 1980's. He retired from music in 2014, but his work remains some of the more poignant to come out of that era (see Shipbuilding). We feature tracks from his prog career as well as a selection of songs that we think demonstrates both his incredible emotional resonance and his deeply held left-wing political beliefs.

It Came From The Bin!
Hosted by Eddie.
Sometimes I acquire so many records that a few of them end up relegated to the 'To Be Played' Bin. This is the story of several such albums. They all emerged during the same listening session, so I've made a show about them. It is truly an eclectic selection and includes some genres I don't often play. Country is represented by Patsy Cline (classic) and Garner Wayne (fair dinkum kiwi), Classical by Wagner (not Ride of the Valkyries) and Sousa (go on guess!). The truly strange is a selection from Electronic Music III (a James Joyce remix!). All this and more!
Hosted by Matt, Glen and Eddie. We have done very well with obtaining vinyls of late, Matt enters the lists with selection of deliberate contrasts. From the hyper-modern rock of Baroness and Beastwars to the mellow 1970's beats of Osibisa and the Brazilian jazz-fusion of Daniel Salinas. Also featured is the classic metal of Deaf Dealer (not a typo!), the spiky and acerbic indy rock of the Bush Tetras and the wild jazz of Alphonse Mouzon. Something for everyone here and you are guaranteed to hear stuff you haven't heard before!

This is the jazz my father loved, intellectual but not pretentious, and played with skill and passion.

The show is roughly divided into two halves; Sober (prog and blues) and Unsober (rock). I rate Family as one of the best bands of their era, listen and find out why.

In this episode of the Audio Archive we bring you an hour of the pure, uncut funk as the Mothership descends and your host, Dr Funkenstein, emerges in a cloud of fragrant smoke...

Audio Archive 07-09-2023 - Indy Throwdown: Moodists vs. Clock DVA
Hosted by Eddie and Glen. In this episode we compare and contrast two rather obscure 1980's indy bands. In the black corner we have the Moodists, an Australian indy-rock band which formed in Melbourne in 1980. And in the other black corner we have Clock DVA, an English industrial band formed in 1978. Have you heard of either band? Which one is the better band? Tune into the Audio Archive and find out!

Audio Archive 31-08-2023 - Ben Webster - Cottontail
Hosted by Glen and Eddie. Ben Webster was an American tenor saxophonist best known for his work with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. He used the same saxophone (Ol' Betsy) from 1938 until his death in 1973. His delicate phrasing has to be heard to be believed, but he also earned the nickname "The Brute" for his abrasive personality after a few drinks. We play a selection of standards and Ellingtonia, featuring his signature tune Cotton Tail.

Audio Archive 17-08-2023 - 23 Skidoo - The Culling Is Coming.
Hosted by Eddie. 23 Skidoo were a British band that formed in 1979 as a confluence of the industrial, independent and dance music genres. Bringing a sound heavily influenced by Middle Eastern and Asian music (especially percussion) their sound was like no other band of it's era. In this show we feature The Culling Is Coming a drum ritual that was performed at the first WOMAD Festival in 1982 (in Britain). Wild, unusual and deeply rhythmical this is truly music from the fringes.

Hosted by Glen and Eddie. Johnny Hodges was an American alto saxophonist of rare talent. He spent many years as part of Duke Ellington's Jazz Orchestra. In this show we bring the man known as 'Rabbit' out of the shadows and let his saxophone speak for itself. With a selection of great tracks by a great artist, listen to an hour of the man that John Coltrane (!) described as "the world's greatest saxophone player."

Audio Archive 03-08-2023 - Roxy Music - Vaguely Chronological
Hosted by Matt, Glen and Eddie. We welcome Matt back into the studio after a hiatus of several months with this show featuring the mighty Roxy Music. A band that straddled both the popular and esoteric, featuring the talents of Bryan Ferry, Brian Eno, Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay (among others), Roxy Music laid the groundwork for many of the New Romantic bands that followed them. We feature both classic tracks as well as some that you wont have heard on commercial radio. Also, welcome back Matt!

Hosted by Matt and Eddie. We welcome Matt back after too long a break. He has bought a selection of albums by those bands formed by groups of 'name' musicians. Often the group's name is simply the surnames of the stars involved. As ever we have an eclectic selection, but this week with extra talent!

Audio Archive 20-07-2023 - Buddy Rich - Big Swing Face
Hosted by Eddie and Glen. Buddy Rich wasn't two when his parents incorporated into their vaudeville act. No surprise that he went on to become a bandleader and one of the most influential drummers of all time in any genre. Listen to an hour of big-band music at its most entertaining, with special guest Mel Torme.
Hosted by Glen and Eddie. In 1977 Howard Devoto left the Buzzcocks and founded his own band, Magazine. He wanted to explore new musical directions and recruited a very strong lineup to do this with. I have all four albums from their classic period (1977 - 1982) as well as the live album Play. Magazine did not last long but they left a great legacy that still stands up 40-odd years later.

Audio Archive 06-07-2023 - Nick Cave - The Early Years (R-Rated)
Hosted by Eddie. In this show I'm featuring the powerful and confronting music of Nick Cave, an Australian singer, author, poet, screenwriter, composer and actor. In the early 1980's he was very much the wild man of off-centre music, with wild performances and provocative material. I feature selections from records with names like Drunk On The Pope's Blood and Mutiny in Heaven so be warned, this show goes hard - just like it's source.

Audio Archive 29-06-2023 - Don Byas - Moderately Obscure
An eclectic music (and sometimes comedy) show from Eddie, Matt, and Glen and their extensive vinyl collections, produced by Manawatū People's Radio with support from New Zealand On Air. Hosted by Glen and Eddie. In this episode of the Audio Archive we showcase an artist who, through no fault of their own, did not get the recognition they deserved. Don Byas was an American saxophonist who spent the majority of his career playing in Europe and never got the attention his great talent deserved. After all this is the man that Count Basie shoulder-tapped when he needed a replacement for Lester Young. Listen to an hour of cool jazz and rich tones played by a master of his instrument.

Audio Archive 22-06-2023 - Silverfish and Guests (R18)
Hosted by Eddie. In this show I'm playing late-1980's punk rock, so be warned! The band I'm showcasing is The Silverfish, a British band that didn't make many records but boy-o-boy they made an unholy racket. Get ready to have the wax knocked out of your ears with an hour of unrestrained mayhem! With guests Arsenal, Tar and the mighty Butthole Surfers as guests.

Audio Archive 15-06-2023 - Charlie Christian: The Man With The Electrified Guitar
Hosted by Glen and Eddie. As if being a truly great jazz guitarist wasn't enough. Charlie Christian might not have been the first person to put an electric pickup on his guitar but his name goes down in history as the first lead guitarist. Starting with Benny Goodman's band he moved the guitar out of the rhythm section and made it a instrument for jazz solos in its own right. He never got to see the full effects of what he started but few people have influenced modern music to such a degree, a true innovator.

Audio Archive 01-06-2023 - Phil Manzanera - 801
Hosted by Glen and Eddie. When your career begins as the lead guitarist for Roxy Music there isn't really anywhere up you can go. But Phil Manzanera certainly didn't go downhill after his stint with that band. This show covers his post-Roxy work, both solo albums and as part of the mega-supergroup 801. Listen to some of the best Prog-Rock played by the best musicians, the list of stellar contributors is far to long to list here, just awesome.

Audio Archive 25-05-2023 - Art Pepper - The Jazzman's Jazzman
Hosted by Glen and Eddie. Art Pepper is every bit the archetypal jazz musician, a huge talent but a personal life blighted by addiction. In this episode of the Audio Archive we play tracks dating from the late 1950's to shortly before his untimely death in 1982. Listen to a player who never allowed his personal circumstances to affect the clarity and delicate tone of his music. Truly a jazzman's jazzman.

Hosted by Eddie and Glen. Mark Stewart began his career as the lead vocalist for the jazz-punk band The Pop Group but he found his true calling in the genre of industrial hip-hop. In this episode we pay tribute to a man of rare passion and temper who never lost that edge. He opened many musical doors for me back in the day and never 'sold out'. Listen to an hour of passionate and angry music, made by a man who never gave up the struggle against injustice.

I was very happy with the 20 albums I scored and so here is a selection of them, including one record I have been hunting for 40 years or thereabouts! Featuring a mix of jazz (Freddie Hubbard), folk (Fairport Convention, rock (Ian Hunter) and indy (Sparks) there is something for everyone here.

He was noted for his use of the space between the notes as well as the varied qualities of the notes themselves. This put him at odds with the prevailing bebop style of jazz but he made a space for himself within the jazz firmament. Listen to an hour of jazz with his unique touch and remember, listen to the spaces.

Audio Archive 27-04-2023 - Rip, Rig And Panic!
Hosted by Eddie. This episode of the Audio Archive is a bit unusual in that I will be showcasing not only the band but also the constituent components of it. So you will get music by Rip Rig and Panic (a band named after a Rashaan Roland Kirk album), but also music by the Pop Group (a punk band), Neneh Cherry (the lead singer) and the avant-garde jazz trumpeter Don Cherry (Neneh's stepfather). A lot of territory covered here, even by the Archive's eclectic standards. Enjoy!

Audio Archive 20-04-2023 - Rashaan Roland Kirk - The Man With Three Saxes
Hosted by Glen and Eddie. The images of Rashaan Roland Kirk playing three saxophones at once are one of the most striking images of jazz players that I have ever seen. Beginning as a child he was a true multi-instrumentalist, continuing to play multiple instruments even after a stroke paralysed one side of his body. Listen to some great jazz as Mr. Kirk plays both standards and free jazz in his unique style.

His career lasted over five decades and he repeatedly proved himself capable of re-imagining his music for both new audiences and changing times. In this show we feature two classic sets from his 'modern' phase in which electronic instruments and music derived from sources outside of classical jazz feature heavily. Showcasing the records We Want Miles and Dark Magus.

Hosted by Eddie. Squeeze are something of a super-group and a one-hit wonder. Their most well-known song by far is 'Cool For Cats' but they have made many great songs over the years. Centered on the pairing of Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook the band have boasted a litany of great musicians: Jools Holland, Paul Carrack (Roxy Music) and Amiee Mann to name just three! Listen to an hour of superbly crafted bitter-sweet UK pop.

Audio Archive 23-02-2023 - Erroll Garner
Hosted by Glen and Eddie. Erroll garner is a jazz pianist who never really got the accolades his talent deserved. He began playing at 3 (!) and never learned to read music, playing by ear for his entire career. He came between the great players of the early jazz years (Fats Waller) and the virtuosos of the bebop era (Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson) and so fell into the shadow of both.

Two people from Britain; Adrian Sherwood (master mixologist) and Mark Stewart (founding member of the Pop Group) met and made music with the core of the house band at Sugarhill Records (Grandmaster Flash). Audio Archive 29-12-2022 - Japan
Hosted by Glen and Eddie. Japan were an English band that formed in Catford (South London) in 1974. The name was initially a placeholder until the band could think of something else, they never did. Associated with the New Wave movement more because of their clothes and manner rather than their music, which had more depth and nuance than many other bands of that genre.

Audio Archive 22-12-2022 - The Crusaders

They were able to play in many styles and reached their commercial apex with the 1979 release Street Life featuring Randy Crawford on vocals. This show features tracks from Soul Shadows (a Japanese compilation), Free As The Wind and Scratch (a live set). Scratch is notable as the cover is bright pink, a visual pun, as it is the colour of Pepto-Bismol an American brand of antacid.
