Kan has led the company through numerous changes in technology and processes, including the introduction of new materials, advanced machinery and digital solutions. She has also focused on developing a workforce that is highly skilled in their respective fields. There are a number of challenges that come with running a family business, according to Pamela Kan. One of the biggest challenges is transitioning the company from a family-owned operation to a professionalized organization. This involves making changes in how the company is run and how it is perceived by both clients and employees. Another challenge is maintaining harmony within the family while also running the business. This can be difficult when there are disagreements over business decisions. Predictions On The Future Of Our Economy | Brian Smedley

Droves of anxious people take to the arid streets of Tatooine. The desert planet recently experienced a decline in GDP and now with inflation on the rise, rash financial decisions made by the population were a real danger. As the crowd continues onward, it is confronted by a stranger. Brown robes shielding him from blistering heat, his head remained hooded and face cloaked. With the wave of his hand, those within range of his voice were pacified, “This isn’t the recession you’re looking for.” While the Start Wars inspired scene seems a bit cheeky, forecasting the economy is what Brian Smedley does. Brian joined Guggenheim Investments seven year ago to lead a macro economic and investment research team. Basically he helps allocate the company’s investment positions and is pretty good at it too. During our interview I enjoyed learning more about Brian, his take on the economy and most importantly, the opportunity we had to become friends.

Over his career he has managed billions in private equity capital in companies that have created over tens of thousands of jobs. About the Guest Dickson Buxton is Senior Managing Director of Private Capital Corporation. In 1976, Dickson Buxton co-founded Private Capital Corporation, and shortly thereafter, made a decision that would broaden his horizons. As the traditional markets continue to leave investors with an unsettling feeling of uncertainty, secondary markets seem to be the big buzz in Silicon Valley. Secondary Markets are looking more attractive because they are a more limited market, fewer shares have been issued vs. after a company's IPO. And generally speaking buyers feel that the prices will dramatically appreciate after the company IPO. With all this activity on this new market front, you may think that the SEC would become concerned and enact regulatory laws. Private company transactions and private company securities actually have the same laws as public companies as far as insider trading goes- the however the SEC currently isn't regulating private companies do to a lack of infrastructure. As private company trading increases most likely we'll begin to see an increase in regulation from the SEC due to the fact that the return on investment for the secondary markets are looking promising. American Dreams- Scott Joyner

December 3, 2011 - Alan Olsen and Nadine Camara discuss new technologies in Healthcare as well as the effects of the new Healthcare law with D.O. of Heartland Women's Healthcare, Scott Joyner. Summary: Today's technological revolution is revolutionizing many industries. What was thought impossible five years ago is now a reality. Yet with all the advances that we have been experiencing, are the costs reasonable? Where is the balance between state of the art and what wallets can really afford? Each year procedures take less time to complete and the recovery times decrease while billing exponentially increases. As a resort to this health care cost delivery crisis the federal government has adopted a universal health care system. Does this really solve the problem though? What doctor in their right mind in the past would deny a patient treatment in a critical situation just because they won't pay? The new system of health care provides everyone with health care- but is it the treatment and coverage what we think it will be? We don't understand the mess that we've gotten ourselves into. About the Guest: Dr. Scott Joyner, D.O. received his medical degree from the University of Osteopathic Medicine & Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, and is a Diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Joyner has served as Instructor for Physician Assistant Candidates in The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Irwin Army Community Hospital, and as Assistant Chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Bassett Army Community Hospital.

Ray Rothrock- Digital Resilience

No one is immune to hacking- including systems not connected to the internet. No matter how much budget to pour into cyber security, its only a matter of time until your company is hacked. This is a principle that we've seen emerging in recent years. How should companies respond when they are under attack? How can they mitigate the damage and protect their most sensitive information? Ray Rothrock is a veteran in the cyber industry and emphasizes in his new book, Digital Resilience, that it's not enough for a company to have heavy barriers of defense- the hackers will still get inside, what companies need to focus on today is resilience.

One Million By One Million-Sramana Mitra

Is Silicon Valley Failing Entrepreneurs? If you’re an entrepreneur or thinking about starting a company Silicon Valley seems to be the place to be. Not only is there a large talent pool in the area, the infrastructure to build and scales companies is perhaps the best in the world. Despite the perceived friendliness of the region towards startups, 99% of entrepreneurs are not able to get funding. While some may assume that investors are simply removing the ‘would be failure entrepreneurs’ out of the scene, this couldn’t be farther from the truth; in fact, many of these companies would likely be profitable. So the question is, why would so many potentially profitable companies be rejected? “They get rejected because they don't fit the requirement of the venture capital model,” says Sramana Mitra, founder of One Million by One Million. Sramana’s company is an accelerator helping entrepreneurs succeed without financing. She says what VCs look for is “hyper fast growth and hyper large market opportunity. Very few companies fit that model.” After interviewing dozens of entrepreneurs, over the years it’s become apparent to me that successful businesses are rarely started with the sole objective to make money. Entrepreneurs identify problems and bring solutions to the table- that is their mission. Many “would be” companies certainly aren’t modeled to grow to $50 million in revenue within the first several years of operation, but that’s ok. These founders are setting out to solve problems and accomplish their dreams, not build the next Wall Street juggernaut. The question I pose is, how does the current infrastructure in the valley meet their needs? While the valley has dozens of accelerators for entrepreneurs to choose from, they don’t always have the interests of founders in mind. Why? Accelerators admit entrepreneurs into their program in exchange for an equity stake in the company. With that said, of course, they are going to groom their “portfolio” and escort them to venture capitalists where there are vast amounts of financial and human capital available. If their companies are given the green light to receive VC funding, the accelerators would see their ROI would greatly improve. Each round of funding the founders accept, relinquishes their control of the company. It’s not uncommon for the founder to be out voted or even ousted from their own company after disagreements with their board. Steve Jobs was fired from Apple, Jerry Yang was forced to step down from Yahoo, and Martin Eberhard, co-founder and previous CEO of Tesla was asked to transition out. If these entrepreneurs had maintained ownership of their company, they wouldn’t have been kicked out by investors wanting to maximize company profits. The concept that entrepreneurs need to receive financing to be labeled successful is a huge misconception. I was thrilled when I met Sramana and that she was fighting against this notion. When I sat down with her for an interview, she explained that her company, One Million By One Million, is the “first and only global virtual business accelerator”. Her mission is to help one million entrepreneurs reach one million in revenue- not push external financing or take an equity stake. Her philosophy is that many companies can be successful by bootstrapping- yes, even unicorns. While her business model is not traditional of other accelerators, it allows entrepreneurs to maintain ownership of their companies. Boot strapping off a paycheck can allow a company to be profitable from day one. She says, “our definition of success in entrepreneurship is customers, revenues and profits. Financing is optional, exit is optional, that's the philosophy of the program”

Learning To Innovate

Despite popular belief, learning to innovate and ideation can be taught in a systematic way. Just as easily, business ideas can be vetted in a systematic way. Rob Ryan took his career into orbit when we discovered a business development model which he calls the sunflower model. He built his company- Ascend Communications- using the sunflower model and helped take it from the point of bankruptcy to selling for $24 billion. Today, Rob has his eyes fixed on the up and coming generation by teaching high school students skills in entrepreneurship. Rob helps people understand their core competency- or what they’re really good at. Once they see the strengths that they have, they can learn how to leverage them and vet out ideas that can turn into profitable businesses. The 5 main steps that teaches students are: How to identify your strengths. How to rank those strengths. How to ideate (create ideas) off of those strengths. How to systematically rank those ideas to see where your competencies will take you. How to go out to customers to validate this whole process (test your hypothesis). What is all comes down to is that Rob is trying to let everyone know that they can be successful by learning to be create. He says that these skills aren’t just limited to Steve Jobs and Elon Musk- they’re in each and everyone of us and just need to be developed and brought out.

The Biggest Challenge Entrepreneurs Face

One of the biggest challenges that entrepreneurs face is finding the path to success. Whether someone is successful or not in business is determined by the quality of people that you surround yourself with. You need to set milestone for your company to achieve, if you aren't meeting these goals you need to re-evaluate them and figure out what it's going to take to become profitable. What it all boils down to is that entrepreneurs are the sum of all their experiences (both good and bad). You need to draw on everything you know as an entrepreneur to motivate yourself because at the end of the day you need to make a decision and at the end of the day- it's that decision that will determine whether you will win or lose.

Epiode 8: Why Scientific Wellness Will Be More Important Than Healthcare

Currently our Healthcare system is designed to treat and cope with disease once we start seeing symptoms. How would you like to eliminate the problem before before you even get sick? The newly launched Scientific Wellness accomplishes just that and is set to disrupt healthcare’s priority in our lives. Covered in this interview are the answers to the following questions: How if our current healthcare industry is negatively impacting our society? Who is Clayton Lewis and why did he and Dr. Lee Hood start Arivale? How is Arivale different from our current healthcare system. What are the 4 quadrants of measurement that Arivale uses? How do you define health and well being? Rather than focusing on illness and symptoms like our current healthcare system does, what can we do differently if we focus on wellness? What are some of the current challenges in bringing implementing Scientific Wellness in society? How do you see a wellness industry changing our culture in the future? Will the wellness industry reduce the quantity of doctors and nurses that are needed? Let’s say I’m interested in signing up for Arivale, can you walk me through the process so I know what I’m going to experience as a patient? The wellness industry relies a lot on patient engagement? How do your coaches motivate your patients to stay engaged in moving towards their optimal level of wellness. How long do your coaches stay in contact with their patients?
