(ALMOST) Every week (or maybe months at this point), the team here will be examining an installment in the franchise with special musician guests. This week Ross, (Ur)Ian, and Nat are joined by Chris Slorach of METZ and more to discuss one of the most quoatable and fun installments yet: "Army of Darkness" Alright you primitive screwheads, listen up! In this episode, we stay on topic the whole time... We don't talk about Puppet Master films, Robocop's affair with Oreo cookies, Seinfeld, or anything else... this is dead serious, and there are ZERO laughs during this chat. You got that??!! Head over to the Rigs of Dad Patreon Page If you wanna get a little more gossip on this epsiode, plus sooooo much more on other episodes! AND billing is paused for the month of December!!!! In 2001 VH1 debuted the show Bands on the Run. It was a massive hit, yet it only lasted one season... We felt like it needed much more attention. Bands on the Ruin - Nashville
In 2001 VH1 debuted the show Bands on the Run. It was a massive hit, yet it only lasted one season... We felt like it needed much more attention. In the wake of Flickerstick's reunion (long after Soulcracker, Harlow, and Josh Dodes threw in their towels), we have decided to break down this insanely dated time-capsule of what-the-f*ckedness and talk with other touring musicians, friends, and music journalists about what they got wrong and what they got right. We head to Nashville to take a closer look at Episodes 8 through a ton of laughs, cringe moments, and more. You can watch every episode of the show for free on youtube HERE. Catch up and catch the magic. If you want early access to these episodes and the extended version of thess episode, head over to the Rigs of Dad Patreon Page where you can also hear more unedited, ad-free interviews with previous guests, patreon exclusives, and beyond! Jeff Everett - Rockets Are Red
No project is complete without a visual component. Album covers, show posters, marketing materials... All of that is a crucial element to every release and campaign. Jeff Everett (Rockets Are Red, El Jefe Design) is a dude that has been intimately involved in the visual side of music for decades and somehow ONLY gets better with time as he branches out into film and wrestling as well. Jeff came by to talk about the business side of the music business, the visual side of the art form, the existential crisis moments every artist goes through, pulling your head out of tough spots and so much more. His ability to eloquently describe these things and beautifully illustrate these things is the reason he is always working with bands like The Foo Fighters, Gaslight Anthem, Against Me!, The Bouncing Souls, Jawbreaker, Clutch; wrestlers like Dalton Castle, Danhausen, Luchabros, Jericho, and more; celebrating films like Point Break, Stephen King's IT, Before Sunrise, and more... The dude just does it all and is finally letting us all celebrate the journey in book form. You can pre-oreder and support the book at let-it-bleed.com Buy prints, shirts, posters and more at rockets-are-red.com Keep up with his online content and more at is instagram: @rocketsarered Book Kickstarter kicks off Valentines Day March 4th - Jeff will be at a Pop Up Gallery Show and Book Discussion at Lost Origins Gallery in Mt Pleasant in DC. If you want to hear the full version of this episode where Jeff and Ross go way too deep and personal, talk about recent films, and all the hyper nerdy stuff, you can get access to that and so many more bonus episodes and extended interviews at the Rigs of Dad Patreon Page where you can also hear more unedited, ad-free interviews with previous guests, patreon exclusives, and beyond! PLUS early access to EVERY episode. Ross's band Burial Waves is heading into the studio next month, but that shouldn't stop you from scoping their debut ep! Chris Slorach (Metz) and The Horror Film Oscars
Episode 50(!!!!) of "Film Basics with Bassists that Love Film" is a milestone worth celebrating with one of the baddest names in the biz. We are of course referring to THE Chris Slorach of THE band METZ. Not only does this dude have an insanely insightful approach to his bass tone and gear, but he also has an encyclopedic knowledge of horror films, so we are thrilled to draft some of our faves with him. The Shining, The Thing, and all the obvious ones make an appearance, but there are some surprises that pop up like a committed Paul Rudd. Strap in and enjoy this massive celebration of Hiwatt, horror, a couple generations of Cronenberg, and beyond. If you want to hear the full version of this episode where Chris takes on the Lightning Crashes Lightning Round and so much more, you can get access to that and so many more bonus episodes and extended interviews at the Rigs of Dad Patreon Page where you can also hear more unedited, ad-free interviews with previous guests, patreon exclusives, and beyond! The 2022 Oscars Draft w/ Mitch Wells of THOU
As we find ourselves knee deep in oscar bait and award-season fodder, we asked returning guest, film champion, fellow Dunable-slinging bassist, and low end legend of the band Thou (Mitch Wells) to come talk gear, tour, movies, and the Oscars if we got to pick em. From the funny, to the sad, to the horror, to the blockbuster bangers, we cover it all in what is surely the most difficult draft we have done so far. Rayshele Teige of Harlow and Bands on the Run
In 2001 VH1 debuted the show Bands on the Run. It was a massive hit, yet it only lasted one season... We felt like it needed much more attention. Rayshele Teige of Harlow joins Ross and Nat to talk about her experiences on the show, reality television in general, her music career on and off the stage, her work with Prophecy Productions, and so much more. Rayshele is an insane storyteller that shines a light on all the shadowy areas we have yet to see in our exploration of all things Band's on the Run, the infamous run-in with David Cross, the Fickerstick conspiracy, and so much more. Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Something in the Dirt, Moon Knight, Loki, The Endless, and more)
Filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are the co-directing team behind so many films we discuss regularly on this show.... They are the team behind "The Endless", the horror-romance "Spring", "Synchronic", and their incredible feature debut: "Resolution". With a do-it-yourself approach to filmmaking, they often wear as many hats as possible on their films. The independent spirit they put in their films parallels the spirit of almost every musical adventure Ian and Ross find themselves chasing, so we are thrilled to have had the opportunity to discuss their work with them on many levels and even more thrilled to have the opportunity to talk in detail about their newest film "Something in the Dirt" which is available VOD wherever you stream movies. Justin Pearson (Dead Cross, The Locust, Retox, and more)
Justin Pearson is a boundary pusher if there ever was one. Musically, his output is simply jawdropping. A genre-defying player that continues to put out some of the most unique and deliberate music I have ever heard. His band Dead Cross (feat members of Faith No More and Slayer) released their second LP today, and it absolutely rips. We discuss the development of this, his approach to writing with some of music's most talented folks, and we are even joined by mutual friend/regular guest here Brent Eyestone (Bleach Everything, Dark Operative, and more) to hear some of the craziest stories about being in a band. If you like gear, crazy tour stories, deep insight into the creative process, and much more, then you will love this conversation. Keep up with all things Dead Cross wherever you listen to music, and be sure to check out their new album via their Bandcamp Page You can follow Justin on instagram at @justinpearson31g Dead Cross at @dead_Cross_official The Locust at @the_locust_official Deaf Club at @deafclubband Brent's project "Harmonic Cross" is also celebrating a sophomoric album release this week with "The Grand Paradise" Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Bands on the Ruin - "This Is Cleveland's Fault"
Joining us this episode is returning guest Adam Gold (Rollingstone Magazine, The People vs John Rich, and more) for a double shift! We talk about how Soulcracker might be the biggest MLM Scam of all time and then break down epsiode 4 "Cleveland" with Ian as well. You can watch every episode of the show for free on youtube HERE. Evan Phelps (Holy Fawn)
Holy Fawn expands on their brooding yet lush soundscapes with their new album "Dimensional Bleed". They have been a constant listen for me for quite some time. "Death Spells" delivered earth shaking tones with a blend of post-rock, shoegaze, and black metal sounds. They have only expanded that unique sound with this epic new album available everywhere on Friday. Evan (guitar) swung through Pudgemont on his way to band practice to talk about the evolution of their sound, the electronic elements and orchestration, why every monitor engineer loves working with them, and so much more. Keep up with all things Holy Fawn, and be sure to scope their tour dates at their website. Jordan Buckley (Every Time I Die)
Jordan Buckley has made me laugh more than most anyone I know... I rarely get to hang with the dude these days, but I can still put on ANY Every Time I Die record and just laugh at how hilariously heavy and unrelenting that band was. I was always envious of his playing, his energy, and his artistic talents aside from guitar. This is a truly great conversation with Jordan about all things ETID, all this post ETID, all things that pushed and inspired ETID, working with Kurt Ballou, his work with John Taffer, his love of Buthole Surfers, Slayer, and Converge... But, most importantly how the impact of that band's legacy has impacted his life since its demise, how he processed the very public dissolve and what he's done to pick himself back up. In addition to new music in the works with 3 former ETID dudes, Jordan has launched an insane cameo page that you should check out, and a hub for all of his projects from art to airbnb! Head over to https://jordanbuckley.xyz/ for all things Jordan. From Shirts, to original art prints, to Every Time I Die tour posters, and more. Not a bit of shinfo to be found on that page. Filmmaker Riley Stearns (Dual, The Art of Self Defense, Faults)
Riley Stearns is a writer, director, jiu jitsu brown belt, metal-head, gear dork, cold brew addict, and so much more. His feature debut "Faults" was a nice introduction to what would become one of the most unique voices in film today. His follow-up, "The Art of Self Defense" is a movie that Ross regularly credits as the film that made him laugh the hardest he has ever laughed in a theater. Riley has now arrived at his third feature "DUAL", which might be his most signature film to date. It debuted at Sundance, and will be available in theaters April 15th. It's the existential black comedy we all need. Riley joins Ross and Ian to talk about the creative process behind "Dual", honing his unique dialogue, working with folks like Aaron Paul and Karen Gillan, working with Emma Ruth Rundle, building the Full of Hell cinematic universe, and so much more. If you are a film dork, a music dork, a gear dork, a jiu jitsu dork, or anything of the sorts, there is something in here for you. Scott Crawford (Salad Days, Creem: America's Only Rock and Roll Magazine)
Long before Scott's instagram handle had me laughing my ass off every day, he put out a documentary called "Salad Days" which took an in-depth look at one of (if not THE) most important music scene's in US history. We talk in depth about his process and approach to this film, his evolution as a teenage fan to collaborator with heroes like Ian MacKaye, Wayne Kramer, Brian Baker, Henry Rollins, Dave Grohl, and beyond. How his love of music journalism helped him capture the magic of Creem magazine in his follow-up documentary: "Creem: America's Only Rock 'n' Roll Magazine", all the way through his new project that sounds simply incredible. Philip Jamieson (Caspian, Dreamtigers, and The Movie Loft podcast) Returns
Philip Jamieson of Caspian and Dreamtigers RETURNS for one of the nerdiest episodes to date. We talk about all the nerdy gear that goes into some Caspian riffs, their upcoming vengeance tour, and most fascinatingly: how Caspian goes about sequencing their albums. Why is that last one so crucial? Because we are talking in depth about some nerdy comic book characters in film. Not necessarily the best comic book films, but the best representation of comic book characters in film. As a bassist, Phil has proven himself to be VERY qualified to talk about film. But as part of an instrumental band, he doesn't have too much to say about comics... This means that he is giving Ian and Ross the task of fitting their choices into HIS sequencing demands. Nerdy enough for you? All of this makes Phil an incredibly welcome addition to the cast on this episode! We talk X-men, Batman, Superman, Scott Pilgrim, and so much more. If you are a casual fan or a film obsessive, you will love to hear these dudes (whose only qualifications are playing bass) chat about all things film in this very special episode of Film Basics with Bassists That Love Film AFTER a good old fashioned interview. Be sure to keep up with all things Philip via @caspianofficial @dreamtigersmusic and his own film podcast @themovieloftpodcast on instagram and be sure to check out Caspian as they embark on some long-overdue tour dates. "Don't Cut Out the Editor" - A Celebration of Film Editing
The Academy has sadly decided to several categories from the Oscar Broadcast, and it's just a bummer. We've covered the magic of film scores in depth with J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines, etc) in a previous episode, and no we are celebrating the art of editing with a selection of films that we find to be great examples of art in editing. All of your favorite films, songs, shows, and stories are the result of sold editing. Sometimes the editing of a film is just as important as the script and the direction. We talk about how it's used to enhance scope in storytelling, how it's used to amplify the scares in horror, and how it is one of the best comedic devices in comedy. We discuss the works of Kubrick, Fincher, Nolan, Adam McKay, and more. If you want to hear the UNEDITED version of this chat, you can hear that and so much more over at the Rigs of Dad Patreon. This also includes extended interviews with my guests like Kurt Ballou (Converge), Greg Edwards (Failure, Autolux), and much more. Celebrated label head, skateboarder, movie buff, AND BASSIST Brent Eyestone (Dark Operative Records) returns for Round 4 of the Director's Draft! Brent Eyestone owns and operates Dark Operative, a music company established in 2018 to assist established artists in an evolved capacity. The company invests heavily in the upkeep of artists’ mental and physical health, places music in motion picture and television projects, and provides other vital services intended to sustain the longevity and wellbeing of careers in creativity. In 1997, Brent started Magic Bullet Records in his college apartment, he has toured and performed around the world with various bands, and currently sings in the hardcore punk band Bleach Everything. More often than not, you can catch him at Del Mar dog beach. When he is not putting out music from bands like Caspian, Power Trip, This Will Destroy You, and all of the above, Brent is usually at the movies, packing himself to the gills with plenty of hot takes on all things movies, or talking films with Alex Essoe (Midnight Mass, Haunting of Hill House, Starry Eyes, etc) for their Movie Night show. Brian Cook (Russian Circles, Sumac, These Arms Are Snakes, Botch, Torment & Glory, and more)
Brian Cook was the first ever guest on this podcast, and he is back with a vengeance... Some of that is true. But regardless of his thirst for revenge, Brian has had an insane two years since we last spoke. Since then he has released a solo album which you should listen to here, These Arms Are Snakes had a reunion, Russian Circles recorded a new album, they toured with Korn and System of a Down, they had all their gear stolen, and so much more... This is not the traditional Rigs of Dad long-form interview either... This is a glimpse into all the tangents and derailed conversations that always happen with every guest during the Lightning Crashes Lightning Round. There was simply too much stuff to cut out, so I let a lot of that role for the release. If you want to hear the whole thing, head over to the Rigs of Dad Patreon Page where you can hear that and all other extended interviews and beyond. Be sure to listen to listen to any and all of Brian's music wherever you get your tunes. Russian Circles can be heard here. Sumac can be heard here. And you'll just have to listen to the episode to find out where you can hear These Arms and Botch next!! Head over to Age of Ruin's Instagram and dive into some of the best thrash I have ever heard.
