Back to the Basics

Our Hopes and Concerns for Psychotherapy

The sacraments provide structure and guidance in relationships and can contribute to healing and growth.  Therapy should be situated within the context of faith and community, and not isolated from them. Discernment is crucial when considering a career in therapy, and motivations should be rooted in a genuine call rather than popularity or personal dysfunction. Healthy Christian communities have the potential to provide healing and support, and may reduce the need for therapy. Jake, Bob, and Joey discuss the wounds that come from divorce, their personal experiences, and practical advice on how to respond to this woundedness.  Key Points If there isn’t any transformation in the wounds, then the sins we fall into, as a remedy, make sense. They don’t work, but they make sense.  We often don’t want to face these wounds, so we try to outrun them. But we can’t outrun our wounds. We’re made for more than that. The Lord understands why you struggle with each particular sin. It doesn’t surprise or scandalize Him. And He loves you where you are.  Divorce is a wound of broken love. So the medicine can only work when you reach the wound. Love is what heals.  Relationship with God is the primary healing element and agent. Give God your attention, quality time, and trust Him.  Consume great content that involves trauma and healing. Seek out coaching - a therapist, spiritual director, or mentor. Have a good community and deep relationships. For a healthy marriage - spend time with a couple who has a healthy marriage.  The temptation in marriage is to harden your heart and to close yourself off. But instead, we are called to tenderness and vulnerability. Tim is the author of the incredible book “The Discernment of Spirits” that teaches us how to utilize St. Ignatius’ rules of discernment. He shares the process of discernment while Jake & Bob combine his knowledge with their expertise on healing. The process of healing and discerning God’s will for us work beautifully together. Key Points Discerning what is from the voice of the Holy Spirit and what is from the voice of the evil one. The rules of St. Ignatius are an invitation to hope. “The more healing that can happen on both the physical and psychological levels, the harder the enemy’s task becomes.” -Fr. Tim  The first step in discernment is to notice any movements, thoughts or stirrings of the heart. Identify whether it is from the good spirit or the bad spirit and then take the appropriate action. If it is from the good spirit, take it in and be guided by it. If it is from the enemy, reject it. The discernment process happens repeatedly throughout the healing process. It is continual and helps you know how to move forward. Our parents/guardians are the first representatives of God to us. We may often hear God’s voice as our parent’s voices which can either be positive or negative. If we believe lies about ourselves from our parents, we need to work through those so that we don’t hear those lies coming from God’s voice in our hearts. We need to invite Jesus’ to speak His truth in our hearts. In times of desolation, never make a change. Renouncement prayer is a way to practically renounce lies and accept the opposing truths. Hope and Hopelessness (Part 2)

Jake and Bob continue their series on working through hopelessness to find hope. When we feel hopeless, we often avoid God because we feel ashamed, guilty or unloved. In these times we only see God as a judge, pointing out our failings. But God is also our Savior who loves us even in the places we feel unloveable. We can try to find hope through things or people but this will let us down. God is the only one who can provide us with the hope we desire. Our hosts walk us through how to find hope again through an Encounter with the God who loves us. Key Points Hopelessness closes our hearts to the Encounter with God. When the sickness of our lives becomes evident to us, we often only see God as Judge and not as Savior. Jesus loves us in the places we feel unloveable.  Healing is a real encounter that brings us into wholeness, truth and communion. If you lose sight of the Savior, Christianity is meaningless. Step 2: Picture the person in front of you and pay attention to how you feel. Step 3: Make an account of the debt they owe you. Step 4: Imagine yourself telling them what they did to hurt you and how it has affected you. If you can, notice that this is not the person they were designed to be. Separate their dignity from the evil they have done.   Step 5: Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you what you believe about yourself based on that incident. Step 6: Renounce the identity lies. Step 7: Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the judgements towards the person who hurt you. Step 8: Renounce those judgements. Step 9: Ask Jesus to forgive the person. Invite the person to stand at the cross with you. Step 10: Forgive the person. Step 11: Pray a prayer of blessing over that person, ask God to bless them in the opposite way they hurt you. Thanks for your patience.   Key Quote: [In the Immanuel process], the goal of healing is connection with God - Jake   Key Points: The disposition of our hearts and receptivity to grace How self awareness helps us respect the process Our interpretation of events matter - do we fear our triggers or see them as God wanting to heal us? A complete walk-through of the steps in the healing process, based on the Immanuel Approach (see the practical application) We can have pre-verbal memories that are attached to wounds Types of barriers: vows, judgements, lack of forgiveness, unconfessed sin Renunciation of vows and the announcing of God’s truth/ blessing   Practical Application: Draw your attention to God. Recall a positive memory of connection with God or others and allow it to overflow in an expression of gratitude to Him. This is called the ‘Immanuel Moment.’ Now, bring to mind a moment of recent distress or disconnection. What is it that you’re feeling in that moment? What are you ‘believing in the feelings’?   Ask Jesus to show you the root of the distress; don’t try to figure it out yourself. Identify the painful experience and corresponding belief. Ask the Lord to reveal what He desires for you to know.  If you begin to feel ‘stuck’ in the process, there is likely a barrier present. Address the barrier using a corresponding technique such as renunciation. Test the fruit: go back to the original memory and original distress and sense if there is peace. Seeing like God means not just seeing someone’s brokenness but seeing them in their wholeness… this includes ourselves When we talk about purity, we need to look at the heart not just actions We must encounter God in his fullness through security and maturity before we can truly embrace the wholeness of God’s love for us At the root of an addiction or impurity is an absence of love. When we invite God (love) into our impurity there can be healing. Do we trust him enough for this? It’s inadequate to simply talk about ‘right or wrong’ in the Church An indicator of purity is the quality of relationship we offer to others: being able to admonish another and at the same time love them through a problem they have Impurity is any deviation from love The power of the healing gaze of Jesus Practical Application: Where is there addiction or impurity in my life? Healing and Leadership (Part 6) w/ the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart

It is an honor to welcome two incredible leaders onto the podcast today, Mother Superior Gloria Therese and Sr. Regina Marie of the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles. Several years ago, their community of Carmelite Sisters reached a crisis point. The Order had been founded during a period of religious persecution in Mexico and compounded by individual trauma they were collectively in need of deep healing. Mother Superior and Sr. Regina Marie discovered Dr. Bob’s ‘Healing the Whole Person’ and soon the entire Community had taken the program. Together, the Sisters recount this profound experience of rediscovering their stories and learning to trust that God can use our brokenness to minister to the world. Today, we welcome Peter Herbeck from Renewal Ministries onto the show. Peter would describe his younger self as a troublemaker and rule breaker, acting out because of an alcoholic father. But, when his father miraculously and voluntarily turned himself in for treatment after his sister called on the family to pray, Peter was introduced to healing: clinically and through Christ. It was a step in the right direction, but his healing journey was far from over. Join our conversation as Peter shares how his understanding of ‘healing the whole person’ shifted in his fifties and how this has impacted his leadership forever.    Key points: Peter’s early life was heavily influenced by his father, a war vet who was successful but an alcoholic Healing began in Peter’s father’s life with Jesus and then led to healing in the family Peter was introduced to counseling during treatment for his father Well into his fifties, Peter didn’t address his healing head on, but simply tried to ‘trust God’ more Dr. Bob’s book, “Healing the Whole Person” was transformational for Peter and catalyzed his adult journey of healing Wounds from Peter’s early life around public failure led to beliefs and vows Even though there was grace and no deep sin in Peter’s life, he was experiencing brokenness as an adult because of unresolved trauma Healing allows you to walk in the joy of the Lord  Acknowledging our brokenness and leaning into Jesus is necessary for leaders   Practical Application: If you are in ministry, ask yourself if you feel pressure to be ‘perfect’ all the time. Find a trusted friend or ministry colleague who you can share honestly with about your shortcomings.  Take the time to ask yourself, “What do I really want or desire?” What is in your heart once you cut past any sin or fear of failure? What in my life have I turned into an idol, and how might that get in the way of loving my spouse well? How would my perspective shift if I saw the idols in my life as icons providing a window to God? Where have I made agreements with the opinions of others that has led to self-condemnation?
