This series is designed to discuss the importance of learning how to disagree. Christians tend to have one answer for everything (right or wrong, saved or lost, in some cases Republican or Democrat). Jesus and the Apostles modeled the ability to reach beyond their opinions to win people to their Christ. We have often migrated to a new Great Commission that makes our opinion, political view, favorite candidate, or cultural perspective the gospel. Jesus never approached reaching people this way. Though few may have seen the connection between the parable of the mustard seed and the plan of God, as He sent Jesus to the womb of Mary, there is indeed a powerful one. In this parable, Jesus wanted it to be known that though the kingdom of God’s beginnings on earth was so small as to be barely noticed and nearly insignificant, it grows over time and will eventually cover the whole world. This is the story of Jesus, the son of God from His conception in the womb of a young virgin from the humble village of Nazareth. The people of His day did not really grasp what God was up to in the world, but it is quite certain that He was up to something really big. The quickest way to destroy a kingdom is to divide people. Division in the end ruin everything in the kingdom. It is never in a nations, households, or communities’ best interest to be divided. We should focus on winning, fighting, and working together for our common interest.

How long did it take for Israel to become ungrateful? (15 days into the second month after they came out of Egypt)

When the government divides, we all lose. We become a house divided that Jesus said, “will not stand.” It is in our best interests to find ways to get along. This will require compromise and sacrifice on all sides.

When you travel a lot you develop travel habits. In my life, I have travel bags that always stay packed. I have learned that if I do not have the basic necessities (toothbrush, deodorant, soap, flashlights, emergency medicines, backup phones, and batteries, etc.) I could be in trouble. Hopelessness overtime can produce a toxic, sick-like, feeling that can shift our view of the world (Proverbs 13:12…Hope deferred make the heart sick). Balanced confidence that is rooted in truth and maturity can protect us from falling victim to naïve optimism.

Once upon a time, in my life, I struggled with prosperity. I named these feelings “prosperity guilt.” Preaching and prospering seemed to be in many people’s mind a contradiction. In response to this I found ways to give away my advantage. It took me years to settle in and embrace my own success differently. The Bible is right, there should be no condemnation to those who are in Christ. The Bible promises in Proverbs that diligence would lead to blessings. The soul of a lazy man desires, and has nothing; But the soul of the diligent shall be made rich. (The New King James) I was diligent but emotionally unprepared for the advantages and opportunities prosperity would bring into my life. This sermon is about the importance of becoming comfortable with the decision to be diligent and prosperous. In order to excel in life we must be intentional. Four Questions to Think About 1. We should have more than one “don’t fornicate or commit adultery message.” Most young people have never heard their pastor say anything positive about sexual intimacy. Important Warning: Physical intimacy is a powerful tool God has given us that reaches into our future, finances and foundation of our lives. It can single handily change all of your options, but if used properly, can bring great joy to your life.

If I keep up the same habits and lifestyle choices, these are the roads I will create and ride on for the rest of my life. The only way to change this is to change my habits, while I still have time.

At the beginning of this year, we were encouraged to begin our journey with courageous conversations. Through the text, the Lord allows us to learn two shocking lessons in the lives of the disciples that drive home our profound obligation to respond. One is a lesson in forgiveness, as Jesus set a high bar for them to jump over. The other is a healing encounter the Lord used as a master class on how to follow a command simply because He gave it.

Moses’ pride and mainly his temper were blind spots he could not manage well. This was the piece that kept showing up in the wrong place in his life. He changed enough to get almost to the promise land but not enough to finish well.
